Ryan Seacrest Closes 45 Million Dollar Deal with 19

Ryan Seacrest just negotiated a sweet deal with CKX/19. I’m not surprised he got a huge pay raise. Paula Abdul and Kara DioGuardi are also negotiating new contracts.   I expect Paula to get a decent raise, but triple her salary? Hm. We’ll see…

Ryan Seacrest is Fox’s 45-Million-Dollar Man.

The ‘American Idol” host has closed a major new three-year deal with CKX, parent of ‘Idol’ producer 19 Entertainment, worth $15 million per year.

Under the pact, which is believed to be the richest ever for a reality host, Seacrest will be exclusive to CKX in broadcast TV primetime to host ‘Idol’ or any CKX-produced show that might succeed it.

The pact, which had been in the works for the past several weeks, gives Seacrest a gigantic pay raise, more than trippling his previous salary of slightly less than $5 million per season.

“Idol” producers 19, FremantleMedia North America and Fox all declined to comment on Seacrest’s new deal, as did his attorneys at Hansen Jacobson. The pact is expected to be announced Monday.

The three-year deal gives CKX exclusivity on Seacrest’s on-camera services for broadcast TV. Seacrest has a separate cable deal with Comcast and is E! Entertainment’s lead anchor. He also produces such shows as E!’s “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” and ABC’s upcoming Jamie Oliver reality series.

  1. That’s some nice change Ryan!!!

I personally am very happy that the original crew will be back for the 9th season (plus Kara of course)

I want my Simon/PAula/randy/Ryan mix..to me they are very much a part of the show……like them or not…..Bring it!!!!

  2. TV ratings are down. Advertisers are down. Recession continues. Idol is widely panned this year for judges and host grating on viewers’ last nerves. Glad to see that Ryan Seacrest, Simon Cowell, and Paula Abdul have earned huge raises.

  3. Glad to see that Ryan Seacrest, Simon Cowell, and Paula Abdul have earned huge raises.

Whilst I may agree about the others, Ryan deserves his raise for having to deal with Bruce all season. If Bruce is still employed next year, 19E is officially insane. If they give him a big raise, I’m going to start protesting. Dude was a disaster this year. I thought Ryan was going to grind his teeth to nubs having to deal with all the screw-ups.

  4. Kirsten, who is Bruce?

Never mind. Google is my friend. Bruce Gowers, producer.

  5. Look for Idol to divide the “singers” into teams and start having immunity challenges next year. Either that or they better pray that another glittery alien from the planet fierce shows up. Can you imagine the ratings if Matt, Donny, and the kid who won had been it this year?

“Mildred, hurry! Forget dinner. We’ll stick it in microwave later. Round up the kids. We’ve gotta see what Matt is singing this week!”

  6. I don’t think AI will be looking for another Adam. They usually like having one of everything, and don’t like what they call ‘overlap’.

They have a lot of the rock categories filled with:
Daughtry – harder, but still pop friendly rock
    D Cook – middlin’-alt rock
    Kris – soft-alt rock
Allison – the girl who will send Pink to retirement
    Adam – glam rock

I am hoping for a metal dude for next year.
    :-)

I really liked Kara in the beginning, because she said what she really thought. Midway through the season, she seemed to stick to the script. That coupled with the mess otherwise known as No Boundaries, mean that I wish her gone.

Even though Ryan can be annoying, I can’t imagine anyone else in his job.

  7. I’m thinking it is about time for Idol to find a pop / dance kinda person. Someone like Britney Spears, but without Britney’s Mini-Mouse voice.

  8. Gotta agree with hwc.

But I’m glad to see Ryan got a raise. Ok with Paula getting a raise, though triple her salary is excessive. Not sure why Kara should get a raise this year. I actually started to like Kara in the tail end of the show, but she’s only been there one year. Sign her to a year contract and after next year give her the big raise.

And I agree with Kirsten. Bruce should definitely not get a raise, and I would be ok if he didn’t even have the Idol job, after last year’s never ending time issues.

  9. They need a smokin’ hot chick. And, whichever producer loves full-sleeve tattoos on women should be permanently exiled to running the talent show at Sturgis. Enough already.

  10. Oh yeah, it’s time for cute, young female pop singer. I just don’t want another guy with a guitar to win again.

  11. More money for the executives / producers / judges / host probably means less money to clear different songs for the performance shows, less money for Rickey Minor and the band and next to nothing for the contestants (wardrobe, hair, makeup, star mentors) in Season 9. I don’t think next year will be any better than this year.

AI hasn’t found a hip-hop/urban or a Spanish music genre winner yet. Acrually, I’d be interested to see if any of the “Dream Ticket” winners from the Disney AI Experience can go far in the competition.

huckleberryfriend, I’d like to see Cat Deeley host AI too. Ryan’s good, but not worth $45 million.

  12. Interesting that this is a 3-year deal, but it’s already talking about “any CKX-produced show that might succeed” Idol. Hmmmm.

Brian Dunkelman has got to be kicking himself’ ¦

    :lol_tb:

  13. There are some VERY negative comments about Seacrest at HuffPo today
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/news/american-idol

I’ve always admired Seacrest and the way he presents the show – he makes it look easy, but I don’t think it’s an easy job. He’s a consummate professional and very astute businessman, not to mention a hard worker.
Even so, that kind of $$$$$$$ is obscene.

  14. Even so, that kind of $$$$$$$ is obscene.

I dunno TWI, if you think Ryan’s salary is obscene, what would you call Simon’s? Just sayin’.

  15. It’s going to be a chick this year, pop-ish sorta 16-19 year old, nice looking, decent enough voice(that’s easy enough, her predecessor wont leave big shoes to fill)

They’ll fill the top 12 with Shrek look alikes for the male slots to remove all doubt

  16. I think Ryan is one of the few of the series regulars who actually deserves his salary. AI makes money hand over fist; Ryan makes a difficult job appear easy. I also agree with Kirsten, Bruce needs to not only NOT get a raise but be replaced. He, and the judges egos, are the chinks in the AI armor.

  17. Idk about Ryan being a consummate professional on AI as he is an asshat on occasion during the show.

  18. Ryan is more professional than the judges, but I agree that he’s a jerk sometimes. I always think of him as the producers’ monkey when he’s toying with the contestants. The idols seem to love him, though.

  19. I have no problem with Simon, Ryan or any of the other judges receiving huge salaries. It just means less into the coffers of CKX.

  20. Ryan is more professional than the judges, but I agree that he’s a jerk sometimes. I always think of him as the producers’ monkey when he’s toying with the contestants.

Yep. THIS. I’m not so sure how much the Idols really like him though.

Can’t they spend some of this money on the show? Need better songs!

  21. American Idol makes almost a billion dollars a year….I have no problem with spreading the profits around to the on-air talent….

  22. AI hasn’t found a hip-hop/urban or a Spanish music genre winner yet.

Idol has all but stopped even putting an African American into the finals. They must have done their demographics and concluded that they don’t reach an African American audience anymore.

Iraheta is going to be their Latin-market idolette, even if she doesn’t know it yet. She’ll go back to doing both English and Spanish versions of songs.

Bwah hwc – or how about Big Brother like cameras in the Idol house?

If not Planet Fierce, Sasha Fierce.

It would be nice to see a really strong field of female contestants for a change.

  24. I can’t see how Ryan is worth $45 million, but good for him. By the time they’re done give out these “raises”, the show will be filled with so many product placements and sponsor showcases that there probably won’t be any singing left. I can hear it now — “Tonight’s theme – best songs from a commercial. Can’t wait to see what Mary Sue does with the Ford jingle.”

I hope they don’t forget the story of the “golden goose” and remember that most people watch the show to see the contestants.

Idol has all but stopped even putting an African American into the finals. They must have done their demographics and concluded that they don’t reach an African American audience anymore.

If you look at the rating AI % of African American views is roughly equal to the total US population and African American audience share is constant over the past 5 years. And two African Americans made the top 13 this year, including one of the judges’ favorite.

And I have no doubt a really great African American singer with stage presence can win Idol. There just hasn’t been one for a few years. (I love Melinda D. but she didn’t have much charisma or a good commercial fit IMO.)

Iraheta is going to be their Latin-market idolette, even if she doesn’t know it yet. She’ll go back to doing both English and Spanish versions of songs.

Strongly doube that Alison will make a big push into the Spanish market.

Matt Giraud is of 1/4 African heritage. I think that still qualifies him as African-American. He just has light skin.

I agree that Allison will be doing Spanish versions of her songs.

  26. Well Ryan will certainly be giving half of that to the IRS, well much less if he has good accountants. I like Ryan – he is part of what makes the show appealing – Brian Dunkelman is but a faded bitter memory. He can’t help it if he’s got the role of messenger of bad news.

  27. Wow. 45 Million to stand in front of a TV and crack “jokes”. I think I’m in the wrong profession. :confused_wp:

  28. Even so, that kind of $$$$$$$ is obscene.

I dunno TWI, if you think Ryan’s salary is obscene, what would you call Simon’s? Just sayin’.

    I would call it insane.

  29. Idol has all but stopped even putting an African American into the finals. They must have done their demographics and concluded that they don’t reach an African American audience anymore.

ummm, they pimped Lil pretty hard and as i recall, she is African American….but then again, maybe my eyes deceive me.

  30. Ryan is good at his job but does not deserve that large of a raise! Cat Deely is the BEST Reality Series Host on TV and she didn’t even receive an Emmy nomination. She got robbed.

    Ryan Seacrest = Dick Clark

Not one of the judges earned a raise this year! If Randy was replaced, we’d soon forget about him. IMO, he’s the useless judge. I think Kara will do better in the coming season.

  31. It disturbs me that Ryan is behind that trainwreck “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” but other than that, I like him. IMO, he more than deserves a raise – he keeps the juggernaut going and does a hell of a good job of it. There aren’t many people who can say that they host a LIVE tv show of the viewership/popularity of AI and do the kind of job he does. I can only think of two – Tom Bergeron and Cat Deeley (no, I don’t count Samantha Harris as a host.). And one of the so-called “live” SYTYCD shows is pretaped, plus it’s not quite the ratings puller that AI is. We’ll see in the fall once it’s actually competing against established network programming.

But, I think Ryan, Tom, and Cat are all excellent at what they do. So yeah, I think he’s worked for it and therefore deserves it.

  32. Good on Ryan. One more step towards Seacrest world media domination! And unlike the other four I don’t begrudge him his raise cause he actually seems to be doing work every episode.

  33. Being compared to Dick Clark is in fact a compliment in my books – only a stroke has slowed that man down after 50 years or more in the business.

I loved American Bandstand just as much for Dick Clark as the dancers and the music and the musical guests.

Given some of the trainwrecks called Reality Shows I actually find Keeping up with the Kardashians better than most. But maybe it is just because I like that family – poor Bruce Jenner.

Did anyone deserve raises? Compared to CEOs of failing automotive companies and other asundry corporations, who got far higher salaries and bonuses for losing money.

Ratings may be down, profits may be down but the 19 machine is still raking in profits, not losing money.

  34. ummm, they pimped Lil pretty hard and as i recall, she is African American’ ¦.but then again, maybe my eyes deceive me.

Compare to just a few years ago when there were multiple African American singers, both male and female — four in the top 12 in both Season 3 and Season 4.

They have been obviously trying to tap the Latino/a market for a while. That’s why I think 19R will do Spanish language teen-pop releases with Iraheta. I can’t imagine what other reason 19R would have for signing her.

  35. American Idol makes almost a billion dollars a year’ ¦.I have no problem with spreading the profits around to the on-air talent’ ¦.

Absolutely. You think they are going to mail the overage to the viewers? Why not pay the folk who represent your brand?

Wow. 45 Million to stand in front of a TV and crack ‘jokes’ . I think I’m in the wrong profession.

I think he does a little more than that. Ryan is terrific at what he does. He is unflappable, quick witted, professional, and makes that behemoth of a show move like it should. Even saddled with Bruce. He’s an asset for sure, and definitely deserves to share the wealth.

  36. Ryan deserves to be paid well. He’s an integral part of the show, and has done a great job for 8 years. He’s key to the show’s success.

to the list of rockers, I would add

    Kelly: pop rock
    Jason: folk rock
    Michael Johns: soul rock
    Carly: rock (pop/alt?)
    Bo: Southern rock
    Constantine: theatrical rock
    Brooke: soft rock
    Taylor: soul rock

  37. AI hasn’t found a hip-hop/urban or a Spanish music genre winner yet.

i would love a hip-hop/urban winner….maybe someone like Chris Brown (minus the antics)

as to Ryan, success of AI = Simon plus Ryan plus a handful of contestants who can sing the “phonebook”

  38. Compare to just a few years ago when there were multiple African American singers, both male and female ‘” four in the top 12 in both Season 3 and Season 4.

so now AI must always put in x amount of AA singers just to keep up w. the figures of seasons past? LOL what about the asians? they get no love.

  39. an RB/Hip Hop guy would be great for the show…………..oh sweet jesus, just realized what angle TPTB will try w. Jamaar next season.

also a country boy…..they’ve had major luck w. carrie and some w. pickler.

as far as girls, i good pop/r&b princess would be nice…..or even a Megan 2.0, w. a great voice.

  40. so now AI must always put in x amount of AA singers just to keep up w. the figures of seasons past?

I dont’ recall saying that. I recall saying that the number of African American finalists has dramatically declined in the most recent seasons and speculating that demographics may account for those changes.

LOL what about the asians? they get no love.

Actually, the show has been cast with a reasonable steady stream of contestants with south Asian and southeast asian heritage in recent years, Anoop Desai being the most recent example.

  41. Well I think one would have to know how many African American contestants show up and get initial auditions each year – for all we know, African American singers just aren’t even bothering to show up to the auditions or not in the same numbers as in previous years for whatever reason. And the other problem is discerning actual singers vs the no talent looking for their 15 minutes types.
