Speaking Lipsyncing….
MJ has kindly given me permission to recap the best show ever — RuPaul’s Drag Race. Over the next couple of months, I’ll be giving you the T on a show that combines the best of Project Runway, America’s Top Model, and The Real Housewives of the Dreamgirls Revue all rolled into one!
What is RuPaul’s Drag Race? No, it’s not a NASCAR event. (That would awesome though.)
It’s a competition to find America’s Next Drag Superstar, shown on Logo TV. It’s broadcast on TV Monday nights at 9pm (8pm CST). It also plays on their online website, beginning on Tuesday mornings.
The show is in it’s fifth regular season. This year, we’ll watch fourteen men compete to become the best female impersonator.
RuPaul, world famous drag performer, talk-show host, fashion icon, and movie star, assembles a group of drag performers who must run an obstacle course of challenges. These include doing fashion photo-shoots, conducting media interviews, creating short videos, performing for live audiences, and making their own outfits from unconventional materials. As with most reality competitions, the contestants are judged on their efforts by a panel of regular and celebrity judges.
The highlight of the show comes when the contestants are ranked by the judges. The two “girls” with the lowest scores are pitted against each other in a Lipsync for Your Life challenge. Side-by-side, they must interpret a pre-chosen song for RuPaul and the judges. The winner is allowed to stay in the competition, while the loser must “sashay away.”
In addition, Logo TV air a bonus half-hour side show called Untucked. This goes behind the scenes, showing the queens as they await their judges’ scores during the runway portion of the show. Since the competition is sponsored by Absolut Vodka, Untucked mainly consists of watching drunk men in female clothing bicker and fight. It’s even better than it sounds.
So join me Monday nights starting January 28 for the fun. In the meantime, if you’ve seen the show before, share your moments below in the comments!
Sashay away!
