Tonight…it’s the big Rocky Horror Glee special, directed by Adam Shankman. Chat in comments, and I’ll be back with videos in a bit.

Hooray for Barry Bostwick and Meatloaf!

It all came together tonight. The fretting that Rocky Horror would be Disneyfield by the Glee gang? Sort of true, but not really.  Think about it–would a high school actually mount a production of Rocky Horror, given the adult content? Of course not.

And that was how the story was presented tonight–how the Glee club struggled to perform Rocky Horror despite the subject matter being hardly suitable for kids.  Mr. Shue, driven by his desire to get closer to Emma by staging a performance of her favorite movie, doesn’t see his folly until the end.

Mike Chang volunteers to play Frank N Furter, but his parents read the script and pull him out of the production.  That’s how Mercedes ends up playing the role. What seemed like a bizarre cop-out out of context makes perfect sense in the story.

Sue Sylvester, up to her usual shenanigans, pretends to support the production, while she plots to air a “Sue Sees It” editorial on the local TV news on the night the show opens.  She plans to rile up the conservatives in town, so she can sit back and watch the mayhem.

Mr. Shue realizes that kind of bad publicity isn’t worth it, and cancels the production, but allows the kids to perform, just for themselves.  Although Rocky Horror’s adult themes aren’t for kids, the way the 1975 classic speaks to misfits makes it a perfect choice for the Glee club,   Mr. Schue decides.

There’s also an interesting subplot that explores how guys can be as body obsessed as their female counterparts.  Original Rocky Horror stars, Barry Bostwick and Meatloaf are hilarious as the TV station executives who enlist Sue to exploit the Glee club.

A huge kudos to director Adam Shankman and to the screenwriters for producing what I think is the best episode of the season.
