Written by Lee, Toby Gad, Lindy Robbins, and produced by Gad, the tune is laid back, very much in the Jack Johnson mold.   Having said that, I think the label made the right decision when they switched at the 11th hour to “Sweet Serendipity”.

“Live it Up” is a good tune, but I’m not hearing it on pop radio…

  1. Love it! It is pure authentic Lee… The vocal, the tone, the lyrics. This is what made me fall in love with this artist!

  2. I’m so jealous, i wanna hear it soooo bad but i don’t have the money right now to pre-order it :(

  3. Moving my original post from the Billboard thread…

It’s a nice little song. More low-key than SS with less backing instrumentation. Very much in the Jason Mraz/John Mayer vein with some O.A.R. thrown in. I really like what they’re doing to Lee’s vocals, production wise. If you ignore the processed vocals on the chorus of SS, most of SS and LIU feature pretty unvarnished vocals. SS is a much better choice for the lead single, IMO, though.

  4. Live It Up is a GREAT LEE song! His vocals are so good, so hot, and the lyrics tell a story and are so romantic! Just makes me want to hear the rest of the album now! I agree with MJ though it is not pop enough for pop radio,Sweet Serendipity was a good choice!

  5. Now this is a Lee song! I love it, but I completely agree they were right to change the single.

  6. “Live It Up” is pure Lee DeWyze. And like others have already said, it’s a good thing they changed the single at the last minute. This song is pure HAC not CHR.

That all being said, it’s still a very good song.

  7. No one has uploaded to you tube yet? They’ll yank it quickly, but it might last for a little bit.

  8. I can see why they changed the single because LIU was never going to get a lot of airplay — but it is a nice song. I like it much better than SS. Makes me more interested to hear the rest of Lee’s album — and I am not a Lee fan, just an Idol fan — so that is a good sign for Lee.

  9. “Live It Up” sounds much more like preidol Lee than “Sweet Serendipity.” I love both songs, but agree that SS is better for the radio. His voice really sounds fantastic.
Lee said his album would be fun, and from the two songs I’ve heard so far, he’s right.

  10. Actually just heard it. I think I could hear it on pop radio actually. It reminds me a bit of Train/Jack Johnson.

  11. Love Live It Up, but I agree that SS is a better single. Still, it’s a little like when we finally heard DC’s Declaration on SNL 2 years ago- you can hear the collective sigh of relief amongst the fandom, now that we’ve got a song that fits Lee’s preIdol sound!

  12. Please excuse me while I spasm because of the new Lee music :D

I love everything about this song. I wish I could say something more thought-provoking but I’m so much of a shameless fangirl that I’m incoherent right now :D

  13. Live It Up is so very Lee and I love that. Lee’s voice is radio friendly to me. I am glad SS was chosen as his first single but I could hear LIU on the radio too.

  14. Love it! The beginning sounds bluesy! His voice sounds amazing!
I would have been okay with this being the lead single. It is upbeat!

  15. ok idol fans, don’t you know it’s your duty to upload things for early listen? LOL

  16. idolsnow: RCA sent digital copies of LEE DeWYZE’s “Live It Up” CD to journalists nine minutes ago 2 minutes ago via TweetCaster

  17. I love it!! It’s very “Lee.” But I agree with others, SS is a better choice for radio. But “Live it Up” is awesome :)

  18. THAT’S the Lee I love! “My heart is starving”… He knows how to speak to his fans. :)

  19. Lee just had a twitter party and said his tour will start early next year.
Also, his favorite movie is still “THe Shawshank Redemption” and he still prefers dogs to cats. Please, people-ask some new questions! :)

I really think he had the TP today to hear what people think of “Live It Up”-he sure got a lot of positive responses.

  20. Ok from the snippets that I heard…it fells like I hearing the same song over and over. And what´s up with all the words? My international ears don´t like that!!!

  21. I will try to contain myself (so much excitement!!) but holy crap. I need this album. NOW :D So far the ones sticking out the most to me are Stay Here, Beautiful Like You and A Song About Love.

  22. I love Live It Up! It’s just so very Lee.
The melodies and lyrics are so him.
Also heard the snippet of all the songs in the album and Lee definitely delivered!
    Can’t wait the album drop.

  23. cristististi: So far the ones sticking out the most to me are Stay Here, Beautiful Like You and A Song About Love.

On the first listen, somehow STAY HERE stuck out to me the most too ( excluding LIU).
    Got to listen again.

MJ : Thanks so much for posting this thread and allowing us fans to hear snippets of the whole album.

  24. Each of the songs are growing on me (what a surprise… I know ;)) but Stay Here just hits me the most. Maybe it’s because I’m in such a good mood? :D

  25. Wow! I think I love every song the best! They all sound amazing. If I had to choose, maybe Brooklyn Bridge would be the stand-out for me.

  26. Based on those 15 seconds snipet, it’s pretty much what I expected but IA that a lot of songs sound similar. Me and My Jaleousy is the only one that I remember distinctly because it sounds like a Kings of Leon song.

  27. First off I’m glad Lee mostly stayed away from the post grunge rock stuff.

Live It Up (song) is OK. I think Lee sings it too heavy. SS is definitely the better single choice.

Dear Isabelle sounds too much like it’s trying to be Hey There Delilah. Especially the verse.

Stay Here and Brooklyn Bridge are the 2 clips that sound like songs I’d enjoy. Especially Brooklyn Bridge because the melody really seems like it brings out a soulfulness in Lee’s voice. Stay Here sounds cute. Weightless sounds cute too but it’s kind of similar.

The lyrics in the clips are a little obvious and eh but it’s hard to judge lyrics without whole songs. I agree sameyness could be an issue but maybe with whole songs it won’t be.

  28. My favs so far are: Dear Isabelle, Beautiful Like You, Me and My Jealousy, Brooklyn Bridge, Earth Stood Still, Live it Up. Wow, I guess they’re kind of all my favs!

  29. If I had to choose, maybe Brooklyn Bridge would be the stand-out for me.

Just from the clips, that was my favorite as well. To be totally shamelessly honest, I got a chill from the first phrase he sang on the clip which is something he hadn’t managed to get from me before. There’s a tiny part of me curious about the whole album after hearing the clips – as I’d thought, to me it seems that Sweet Serendipity was more of an exception than the rule.

All in all, the clips aren’t bad. He definitely records well, as he always has. I guess I’m in the minority that from the clip of Live it Up at least, I would have thought it would have made a better single than Sweet Serendipity – if neither is going to get played on pop radio, at least to me LIU seems more HAC friendly to me. Then again, I only rarely listen to a HAC station so I guess I’m out of touch with what sound would fit there.

  30. I have to say i love most of the songs. Sweet Serendipity sounds like the worst song on the album IMO. Me and My Jealousy reminds me of coldplay and left me wanting more. I think A Song About Love was also great because I love the stripped down acoustic Lee. I also loved Brooklyn Bridge, it reminds me of Gavin Degraw.

ETA: I also LOVE “Beautiful like you”. OK WTH was RCA thinking releasing SS. It’s definitely, at least to me, the worst song . It doesn’t represent the album really well. I also prefer LIU to SS.

  31. Took a 2nd listen to the clips. Brooklyn Bridge again gave me a chill – the bluesy/soulful sound of that first phrase really works for him. I also like the sound of his low range from the clip of A Song About Love. Truthfully I think the back half of the album is stronger IMO than the first half – I can’t quite explain it but it almost sounds like there’s more grit and soul in the 2nd half, whereas the first half is more pop-leaning.

  32. Im really loving all the snippets now just need to hear the whole song!!! Nov 16 here yet?!! :)

  33. Interesting clips, to say the least. from the previews,I think the next single(s) should be Beautiful Like You and Me and My Jealously.

  34. Well, now I get the Dave Matthews wannabe comment someone made the other day. I don’t mean that as a snark, just an observation, LIU definitely goes after that DMB groove, especially in the verses. Kind of a fine line there, being inspired by someone and sounding like a knock-off. I think it’s like a lot of debut albums, if you love his voice, the songs sound good, if you were indifferent, nothing sounds particularly exciting. I liked Lee well enough, but didn’t LOVE him, and none of these snippets are setting me on fire. I’ll be curious to hear the full versions, but so far SS and LIU don’t make me want to buy the album. Not trying to harsh any Lee fans glee, just trying to provide a perspective on the potential audience outside the bubble.

  35. so far SS and LIU don’t make me want to buy the album

As one who wasn’t a fan but does like some of his influences or similar artists, from what others have said, I figured I’d at least check his stuff out. I don’t think those two songs really represent him that well but some of the other tracks on the album, at least from clips, sound decent. Not the sort that I’d have on “heavy rotation” on my iPod, but they might be the sort that at least could end up on there and get listened to once in a while.

I haven’t watched it in a couple years, but several of the tracks sound like songs that could easily be on Nocturnal State on VH1…if it’s even still on. I do see a certain appeal.

  36. so far SS and LIU don’t make me want to buy the album

I wasn’t feeling SS either, but after hearing the snippets of ” Beautiful Like You, Me and My jealousy, and Brooklyn Bridge”, I think I will buy the album.

  37. Thanks for the song clips! :) Let’s see, my favorites so far are Beautiful like You, Me and my Jealousy, Brooklyn Bridge, Weightless and I love, love, love, A Song About Love. I don’t the that all the songs sound the same from the clips. I hear all the different layers of Lee’s voice coming thru in different songs. There’s angsty songs, up beat songs, soulful sounding songs too. Is it 11/16 yet? :)

  38. I’m finally home and have given everything a listen.

“Live It Up” is a perfect song for a Sunday morning. It’s got a cozy feel to it.

He’s packing a pretty serious 1-2-3 punch in the middle of the album, with “Beautiful Like You” “Stay Here” and “Me & My Jealousy” (which he is going to f#*$ing KILL when he does live). Gotta say, my favorite song after the snippets is SH. It’s his AWM, which was also my favorite.

“Weightless” would have fit right in on Slumberland, and “A Song About Love” also appears to have some power.

Sounds to me like this album has a lot of promise! I eagerly await the Soundcheck, the release and (already) the tour.

  39. I can honestly say that for the first time since I became an avid fan of Idol, the winner has finally recorded the album I expected. Lee’s voice sounds amazing…breezy, sexy, soulful and rough. It’s all I had hoped for. Also, for the first time, it’s not overproduced. And I fully understand that a lot of people think Sweet Serendipity is overproducted. I, on the other hand, think it’s just a current sound.

I do think Sweet Serendipity was the best choice for lead single, as opposed to Live It Up. It definitely has more crossover potential.

The next 11 days are going to be torture waiting for the album to drop.

  40. Well I think Lee fans will be happy with the album. So far nothing to convince me to buy it.

  41. Beautiful Like You… from the 30 second clips that’s my favorite. They are sound very interesting though… I’m looking forward to the album drop.
I think a lot depends on where they cut for the 30 second snippet

  42. This whole album sounds fantastic from the short clips that I’ve heard. And the songs don’t sound alike to me at all, not even sure how you can tell such a thing from only 30 second song snippets. The bottom line is that Lee has more than lived up to his promise of delivering a great American Idol winner’s album to his fans, and fans to be. :)

    Can’t wait for Nov 16th!

  43. Written by Lee, Toby Gad, Lindy Robbins, and produced by Gad, the tune is laid back, very much in the Jack Johnson mold. Having said that, I think the label made the right decision when they switched at the 11th hour to “Sweet Serendipity”.

I agree that Sweet Serendipity was the best choice. Based on the snippets, it’s the most pop friendly song on the album, but the rest of the snippets seem to fit Lee’s style very well. The songs seem to be in the style that people expected to hear from Lee.

  44. My favorites from the clips are definitely Beautiful Like You and Me and My Jealousy but I also like Live It Up, Brooklyn Bridge, Weightless, and A Song About Love. The rest of it…I really can’t stand to be honest.

  45. I like almost the same ones as you tammyinohio besides I don’t really care for Weightless from the 30 second snippet. And I really like SS alot. But as long as I like more then 3 am getting my money worth.I think I’ll like most of them. So that makes me happy. And am not really a big fan of anyone from Season 9. But I like to support the Idols if possible.

  46. Well, at least he’s in key when recorded! I definitely hear Hey There Delilah in Dear Isabelle. It’s what I expected from Lee, I think his fans will happy.

ETA: I totally agree with the single change. SS is much more suited for radio.

  47. I really like Beautiful like You and Me and My Jealously the best from the snippets. They reminded me a bit more of U2 or Coldplay. I think I might like A Song about Love too. Some songs I might like better when I hear the full album, but those are the ones that really stood out to me.

I kind of think that Earth Stood Still sounds like his Beautiful Day arrangement that he did during the AI tour.

  48. After a first listen, Brooklyn Bridge stood out for me and I think Live It Up would have been a better single.

  49. wow, wasn’t expecting a deluge of good news when i get back online, lol! thanks so much mj for posting all of these and the links! my heart can’t contain all this excitement. i love the funky, cool, chill vibe of LIU. like SS, it made me groove the minute it started playing but in a slower manner. i agree with most that SS was a better decision as first single, more upbeat, catchy, might be better in catching new listeners’ attention.

as for the snippets (finally!!), i am just so happy that it’s what lee has promised, something that is him and a reflection of his influences. i’m so proud of him and really can’t wait to hear the entire album already. like his previous 2 albums, i think this is an album that i can listen from start to finish but the songs that stood out on first listen (excluding LIU & SS) were: Beautiful like you, Stay here, Me & my jealousy, Brooklyn Bridge, A song about love. i think that’s almost half of it, lol! just so excited right now.. i’m a very happy lee fan today :)

  50. Played the clips again for my mom and she seemed to mostly like it as well (neither of us were Lee fans during the season although she had said that she kinda liked his voice itself). She kinda agrees with me – we really both feel that SS is the worst song on the album, lol. And hearing the clip of Brooklyn Bridge again makes it official – I am a fan of that song if nothing else. I could almost see a music video for that – IMO it would make a great single to release just before Valentine’s Day. Maybe snow falling, and the girl and the guy dancing out on the bridge. For some reason there’s something just from that clip that sounds kinda wintry-happy feeling. I do honestly like that song from what I hear a lot.

  51. Ok, I went back to listen to the clips again and I have to say that if Me and My Jealousy is not released as a single and does not become a massive hit, I will be extremely surprised. I was not a Lee fan during AI but I absolutely love this song based on this short clip alone.

  52. Mozart-I love your music video idea! That song sounds so romantic!

I also love Me and My Jealousy, Stay Here, The Earth Stood Still, and A Song about Love. And actually, all the rest of them. It’s really hard to pick a favorite without hearing the whole song.
Chris Wrate just had a twitter party and said his favorite of the songs the band is performing is Weightless.

  53. Mozart4898, yes, that could work! or maybe they could have it playing in some romantic movie, with your scenario. the song is just full of promise. from the snippets, it’s also one that i’m looking forward to hearing in full. i just can’t stop playing LIU, lol! just love its groovy beat.

Artemis, i saw that from Chris Wrate’s TP too. now i’m really curious to hear the entire song and to see their live performance. they sound like they are having fun playing music (lee’s music) :)

  54. I am also curious about Weightless too now that Chris said that!! Then again I cant wait to hear the whole CD, so many songs sound so good from the snippets!

  55. The snippets don’t always give you the best part of the song. The full version of Live it Up is amazing. The snippet doesn’t really give you a true picture of the song.

  56. Thanks mj. What a wonderful way to wake up in the morning. I love the snippets. Its Lee and his beautiful rasphy and soulful voice. Can’t wait to hear the whole thing. Nov 16 can’t come soon enough

  57. Gotta say, my favorite song after the snippets is SH. It’s his AWM, which was also my favorite.

Ha, AWM is also my favorite from Kris. But yeah Stay Here is the first one that really popped out to me. I liked the first 5 before it but that one is definitely a fave. I also loved Brooklyn Bridge and Weightless. I liked Me and My Jealousy too. I like the piano on that one and BB. I also liked Song About Love. So really I agree with Mozart in that the second half of the album is stronger than the first. I have to say I am a little disappointed in Dear Isabelle. I liked it but for some reason I was expecting a more angsty sound.

I can’t wait to hear the full songs to really judge but so far I’m liking what I’m hearing.

  58. I listened to the whole album and have a couple impressions.

I agree with some that all songs sound similar; probably due to his voice- its distinctive, but that does make it sound the same on many songs. I think you have to be a fan of his voice to really like the album.

Two songs stand out as different from the rest, SS (which I don’t like) and Brooklyn Bridge, agree with Mozart, it is the best song.

I’m not a fan of Lee’s voice, he slurs his words and gets “squeaky” at the end of phrases (don’t stone me! I know fans probably love that about him) but I’m glad his fans should be happy with the album- it sounds like it shows Lee as being true to himself.

  59. Throws stones at Indigobunting!! ;) I do agree that if you dont like a voice you might say that every song sounds the same. I also think even if you do like a voice all songs can also sound the same doesnt mean that you wont like the album. I dont hear any squeaky at all in Lee’s voice! I love what Ive heard so far and really cant wait to hear the rest of Live It Up!

How did you hear the album?

  61. How did you hear the album?

Sorry, didn’t mean to excite anyone; I meant the same snippets everyone else heard here.

Don’t have a bootleg copy, lol.

  62. The snippets I liked were Me And My Jealousy, Beautiful Like You (fav out of the bunch) and A Song About Love.

  63. I am so happy to be a Lee fan right now! I am really impressed with what I heard. I loved most of the songs but my two favourite are Me and My Jealousy and Brooklyn Bridge. I instantly fell in love with the clip of Me and My Jealousy and I love the passion and soulfulness of his voice in Brooklyn Bridge.
I’m not sure how well he’s going to sell but from what I heard the album sounds great and he seems to have stayed true to himself.

  64. I am so happy to be a Lee fan right now!

Yes, fan love doesn’t always have anything to do with how the general people out of the bubble will like it; but it is definitely nice when fans get an album that they were expecting and will like for all their support (vs. getting a whole “biced” album, lol).

  65. I love the snippets! Big sigh of relief that SS is the exception, not the rule.

Of course I would love it if Lee sold many albums and caught on really well with the general public, but that’s secondary to me. I mean, judging by the snippets, I’m most probably gonna love the album, I get the music, therefore I win :)

Glad that non Lee fans are interested in at least one or two tracks :) Nov 16!!!

  66. All the songs sounded completely the same, and had no discernible hook. I wasn’t impressed at all. Even Kris, whom I wasn’t intending to really buy the album of last year, had some interesting, catchy songs on his album, but this? Not so much. IDK.

Granted, I was never really gonna buy this, but when I listen to it with as objective an ear as I can, nothing stands out at all.

Plus, Lee’s voice (something else that never impressed me on idol), still sounded pretty bad on the slow songs.

  67. All the songs sounded completely the same, and had no discernible hook.

I don’t think we can decide that until we’ve heard the whole songs. It’s hard to determine a song’s entire structure based on 30 seconds. Personally, I heard several different tempos, and a variety of arrangement styles. The common thread was Lee’s voice, since we can’t hear the details of what the instruments are doing when all we have is a small fraction of the songs. If having the same lead singer on every song makes all of the songs sound the same, then most albums have songs that sound the same.

  68. I find it hard to decide how much I like an album from snippets only, or even before a substantial number of plays so I’ll refrain to give an opinion for now.

  69. It’s hard to judge anything just from snippets. But based just on these, I really like Me & My Jealousy. I definitely heard some Coldplay-like piano in that one.

  70. I hear at least four distinct types of songs here. The more “anthemic” Me & My Jealousy and Beautiful Like You are probably my favorites. I can’t wait to hear where the full songs take off from the snippets because I’m really digging the clips on these. Brooklyn Bridge shows off Lee’s more soulful and bluesy side. The stripped acoustic songs like Dear Isabelle and A Song About Love are so great to hear with Lee’s raw vocals. I’m looking forward to getting the full stories of those songs with the lyrics. And then an array of more pop/folk-rock songs ranging from the upbeat Sweet Serendipity and Stay Here to the more breezy songs like Weightless and Earth Stood Still. I’m happy with what the snippets show so far, this album represents Lee and his sound well and he’s written some beautiful songs.

  71. Well said, tigervixxen. I agree.

For me, the snippets did their job – they make me want to buy the album and hear the whole song on each and every one. I’m reserving judgement on my favorite until I hear them all. But very happy Lee’s sound seems to be represented well.

BTW, Daughtry’s songs all sound the same, and he’s pretty successful, so not necessarily a bad thing.

  72. I’m digging the comments about the songs sounded the same, because based on the earlier 4-song reviews, I was worried there was going to be too much genre hopping in the CD. Tigervixxxen, I thought you hit the nail on the head with the “four distinct types of songs” comment.

Judging from the song selection and overall mood of the CD, I think RCA (and Lee) deliberately put together a set of songs that could appeal to a younger demographic. I hope it works.

I pre-ordered the CD before I heard any of the songs, so the snippets didn’t cause me to order the CD, per se, but I think I’ll be more satisfied with this purchase than my previous AI purchases.

ETA: After giving LIU a few more spins, it really grew on me. I hope the radio loosens up a bit in the future. It’s a really solid song and could fill an “I’m Yours” spot on the radio, given the right timing and environment.

  73. I’ve been listening to the snippets off and on and many of my “also favorites” keep changing (which is a good thing – means I like everything!) but Brooklyn Bridge was my first absolute favorite and remains so. It’s the Annabelle-meets-VUnderground-Ain’t-No-Sunshine prime Lee that I love. I can envision that voice emanating from a smoky, dark, NYC dive bar, scotch in hand, “I just sing because I love to” bluesy Lee. And for me, that’s the best Lee. Someone on twitter said it was reminiscent of Billy Joel’s NY State of Mind. I had tagged the song Billy Joelish before I read that, but I think the NYSoM reference is on point.

At the moment, my also rans are (in no particular order): Dear Isabelle, Live it Up, and Beautiful Like You. Honorable mention goes to Me & My Jealousy. Love the piano on that song.

Sweet Serendipity is not the best song on the record, but I do think it was a good selection as first single. It demands attention. If SS can reel in new fans and PDs, then the rest of the record and subsequent singles will seal the deal for Live it Up, the record. Good job Lee and company!

  74. I like the clips I’ve heard so far. Lee’s voice sounds good and I’m happy that the songs don’t sound anything like Daughtry or Cook lite. I think I prefer them to Kris’ songs because they have more of a folkie/pop edge.

So the album looks to be respectable and possibly deserving of good reviews. That said, is this album going to break out with that extra
something that makes it compelling to listen to? I just don’t know about that.

Right now for me it’s music I’d like on the radio but I wouldn’t buy.

  75. So the album looks to be respectable and possibly deserving of good reviews. That said, is this album going to break out with that extra something that makes it compelling to listen to? I just don’t know about that.

I think the album is solid, and Lee did a good job. I’m also glad that Lee didn’t go for the Nickleback/post-grunge style because that’s what most people expected. I don’t know what RCA’s strategy will be though to get people to buy the album. I know there’s an audience for this type of music since Jason mraz and Jack Johnson sell millions. The question is how does Lee tap into that audience because his idol fan base won’t be enough to carry him through a successful career.

  76. The album is like many other twenty-something male vocalists trying to break big. Me and My Jealousy is the best track of the snippets, but would have made a terrible debut single. It could be a breakout single down the line, if RCA stays with him. With the current landscape of Top 40 taking over HAC radio and the glut of young male vocalists, I don’t see him making much of an impact. And with the stark departure from his pre-Idol musical direction, he is starting to look more like Bo Bice than David Cook or Kris Allen.

  77. And with the stark departure from his pre-Idol musical direction, he is starting to look more like Bo Bice than David Cook or Kris Allen.

I don’t think Lee’s style is anything like David or Kris, and from what I recall Bo Bice made a rock album. Lee’s album is pure pop with some folk and a little rock. I liked his pre-idol music, but even I can admit that his older sound is too indie and would not have been commercial at all. I still think that as a whole, this album represents Lee well. The folk elements are still there and he wrote almost all the songs, so there’s no ” bicing” going on here.

    I couldn’t agree more.

  79. I think some of these songs sound really good – above the usual Idol standard. Well done Lee!

But I disagree with the conventional wisdom about the single. I’d love to be wrong but I can’t hear SS on the radio much, simply because I think it’s a dull song. At first I was with the people who thought it was a good pop single, but no matter how many times I hear it, I can’t remember it the next day. That’s not good.

While I agree ‘Live it Up’ is also not pop radio material, at least it’s a good song and something that represents Lee. I’d have preferred that to be the single since I don’t think mass radio play is in his future anyway.

  80. The album is like many other twenty-something male vocalists trying to break big.

I guess whether Lee can break out depends on RCA, the radio, and luck. If RCA gets behind him, he has a better chance than anyone not on a major label or anyone not a priority for their major label. From what I can tell, Lee’s specific album sound doesn’t cross over with anyone else on the RCA label (deliberate choice by label? Probably…) I’m worried about the comments stating that SS is a mediocre choice, and that’s why it’s struggling on the radio. I like the song a lot, and I hope it’s slow climb has to do with $$ and buzz, rather than the PD’s not liking the song. I don’t know how much RCA will spend on him. Given the current state of the industry and his tiny fan base, he’s got an uphill climb. Hoping for the best though and expecting the worse.

  81. While SS likely won’t be my favorite song on the album I do have a fondness for it and I see that it was one of the better choices for a single at this time. I really don’t know how it has been established that SS is doing so poor on the radio. Yes it is growing slower on a slower format but 100+ spincreases and stations playing it have been noticeable over the last week or so. It is also tough to compare with other singles which were pushed to CHR as well. I can see that the development and strategy for Lee and this album will be a bit different for RCA but the material is there for him to have a shot at doing well.

  82. Based on the snippets, my favorites are Beautiful Like You, Me and My Jealousy, and Live it Up (which I heard the full version of).

  83. I could see myself really, really liking Me and my Jealousy. Live it up is alright, it is better then Sweet Serendipity. Some of the songs do sound very similar, perhaps part of the reason for that is because we can only hear the chorus.

  84. Hmm. Interesting. I find that Lee always sounds draggy to me. It could be his phrasing – when it comes right down to it, he’s been working on his music less than ten years, so I’m not sure he’s that experienced on getting different affects from a fairly limited range, if that makes sense. I also find there’s a vocal similarity that isn’t that interesting. But my main complaint is that he pushes too hard. It’s all heavy lifting. That could be a production thing.

That said, I thought Weightless was okay, and Brooklyn Bridge had some spark. I might go iTunes for those if they hold up. I still get a toothache from SS.

  85. I’ve been listening to the full version of Live it Up all day today. I really love the song. I’ve also been listening to the snippets. There are so many songs that I really love. It’s making me super excited to get the album. 10 more days to go!

  86. when it comes right down to it, he’s been working on his music less than ten years, so I’m not sure he’s that experienced on getting different affects from a fairly limited range, if that makes sense. I also find there’s a vocal similarity that isn’t that interesting.

I guess as a fan who has listened to just about everything Lee has sung, I’d have to say that what I love about him is that he DOES sing in so many different ways, even the same song like Use Somebody has been done by him at least 4 different versions. He is a self taught singer/musician/songwriter so it’s a continuous process, but the natural talent is there.

  87. SS gives my teeth a nice buzz LOL! The snippets served their purpose and just make it even more exciting to hear the full songs. I’m a proud Lee fan and I am so excited for everything that is coming up in the next two weeks and beyond :)

  88. I guess milage varies-what you call pushing sounds intense and passionate to me.But I’m glad you like a few of the songs.

The first time I heard Lee sing, he just grabbed my heart. I love the tone of his voice. There are other Idol singers with a lot of fans who just leave me cold, though I recognize that they are talented.

I”ve been playing the song snippets a lot and I keep changing my mind about my favorites. Right now, “A Song about Love” and “Me and My Jealousy” are the ones I’m most excited to hear.

  89. My biggest problem with Lee’s album will be to decide which one I love the most!! I’m excited about all the coming events and what it all means to us as fans and Lee as an artist. Another thing I love about Lee (oh geesh, don’t get me started!) is that he doesn’t see this as a test, he sees this as a gift, something he’s worked hard on, a dream he’s had for ages, and that he wants to share with people. If someone doesn’t like his music, it is not failure on Lee’s part, cause he put forth his best effort, and he stands behind what he did, no apologies. Music is what he does.

  90. The first time I heard Lee sing, he just grabbed my heart

Totally agree! Whether its the emotion or passion that he puts into it, something about his voice really pulls me in. You can tell when he sings its so intense for him and that he really feels it. Which is why I have been a fan of his since the first time I heard him sing on idol.

  91. Lee also has something else that is very important: Vocal recognition. When you hear Lee’s voice on a CD or on the radio you KNOW IT’S HIM. There are a lot of male singers out there, and frankly, to me, a lot of them sound too much alike, including some recent Idol winners and contestants. But I can always tell a song is sung by Lee as soon as I first hear it, because his voice is just that distinctive, and more than a little radio friendly.

That ability, to have listeners recognize your voice immediately as soon as they hear it, is something that should not be underestimated; especially in today’s music market, where far too many singers sound so much alike.

  92. I totally agree with all the voice comments, I cant get enough of Lee’s voice. There is a lot of depth to the tone and textures and he uses it well on different types of songs. I’ve always enjoyed the gravellier male vocals, it really elevates a song for me. That all said one of the things I’m looking forward to most in hearing the full album is getting the full story that Lee is telling with each of these songs and as a whole. I’m not a lyrics first person usually but with some of the lines some of the critics have revealed and in these snippets I’m very much excited to get the full picture. I love the story of Live It Up the song too.

  93. I like all I hear from the snippets. Can’t decide which one is my fav. They all are. Lee’s voice is just so exciting with different layers and textures that I just love hearing it. Plus with great songs its magic. This is one album which I’m going to treasure. :)

  94. i agree with artemis and kvwicks, the first time i heard lee sing (which was the fray song during hollywood week), he just grabbed my heart (and never let go, lol!). i can tell if a song touches me, my eyes just automatically close and i just want to feel the music. listening to lee’s voice, his tone, his music makes me feel this way. at the moment, i honestly can’t stop listening to LIU, such a chill, cool song. SS is a great song to wake up to in the morning, gets me moving and ready for the day. LIU, on the other hand, is a great song to listen to at the end of the day, relaxing, gets you ready for slumberland (heh!).

tigervixxxen, i’m also looking forward to the story that each of the songs will tell, as well as the overall story of the album. based on the snippets i already have my faves but they will surely change. glad to hear that the band has already practiced playing all the songs from the album (accdg. to lee’s TP), can’t wait to see them perform.

  95. After a few repeats, I can safely say that I love the snippets. :)

  96. Well, after listening to the snippets I can say that the sound of Lee’s music is quite pleasant. That said, I probably wouldn’t put any of the songs on repeat. But I think I will use this album when I need some background noise.

  97. I probably wouldn’t put any of the songs on repeat.

I have the exact opposite problem with Lee’s songs! I get stuck in these “loops” where I can’t move on from one song to the next! Even with the snippets, I’m finding I keep repeating Beautiful Like You over and over! I think it’s my new favorite. :)

  98. I’m seriously digging Live it Up. Snippet does not do it justice at all. Um, it’s, dare I say it, sexay. Very cool lyrics, and is there such a thing as bluesy rap? LOL! Anyway, it’s Pure Lee, and I’m enjoying the heck out of it. Can’t get it out of my head but then again I don’t want to!

  99. The other day I sent Sweet Serendipity to my daughter from the hotline connection to her cell and she liked it. Now she loves it, too. I’m really eager to hear the rest of the album and bonus tracks. The fave snippet for me is Me & My Jealousy followed by Brooklyn Bridge. Judging from his previous albums, I think we’ll get quite a variety of songs. Can’t really tell just from the snippets.

I have both SS & LIU on repeat…can’t get enough.

  100. I came across someone yesterday that said they had a really bad and stressful day. After listening to So I’m Told they said they felt a lot calmer. There you go….Lee’s music is therapy! Healthier than drugs and cheaper than a therapist :)

  101. I love Live It Up, been listening to the song the whole day, but I see why they switched to Sweet Serendipity as the first single. One thing though, some writers who reviewed LIU have said that this would have made a good coronation single for Lee, but I don’t get that coronation single vibe from the song at all. Maybe it’s because he’s talking about a girl?…I dunno. I do love the positive message of both Live It Up and Sweet Serendipity, they’re both feel good songs that’s why I keep listening to them.

The song snippets are awesome. My early favorites are Dear Isabelle, Beautiful Like You, Me and My Jealousy and Brooklyn Bridge. I’ve been repeating this part over and over, and because Stay Here is in the middle of these 4 songs, it’s has grown on me too. I hope they’ll have the album stream soon so we can hear the full songs before we get the CD.

  102. I went back and read the critics comments of the songs they had the opportunity to sample a few weeks ago and I also don’t really understand the coronation comments about LIU. Maybe because the song is upbeat but it is about meeting “that” girl! I also get a feeling that the snippets didn’t do justice to Dear Isabelle and felt even more so going back and reading the critics comments about the song. So I’m really looking forward to hearing that one fully, and well yeah, all of them too!

  103. I am expecting a lot more from Dear Isabelle, too. I can’t recall everything the early critics said, but I do remember that was the song I wanted to hear most from their comments. Didn’t someone call it ‘haunting’? I didn’t get that from the snippet at all.

  104. Coming late to this party – real life has taken me over for a few days!

I did manage to listen to the snippets, then this morning found a Youtube vid with all of them, plus they used those beautiful recent photos as well! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Yeq3WOdWIc&feature=player_embedded for those who like the combination of visual and aural.

Some snippets appealed at first listen – Brooklyn Bridge, Beautiful like You, Me and My Jealousy, A Song About Love, Dear Isabelle – all jumped out at me, I have an obvious preference for Lee’s angsty growl! I also appreciated the upbeat lightness and freshness of Live It Up, Sweet Serendipity and Stay Here, but they came a distant second.

Then between listens, as I went about, two snippets started to haunt me – A Song About Love – literally the shivers! – and Stay Here – bouncy, infectious and groovy! A Song About Love isn’t surprising considering my preference, but Stay Here wormed its way in! For now, they’re my favourites :)

And I’m emphasising “for now” and “snippets” rather than songs as I feel that full songs will give quite a different impression to the snippets in isolation! There’s so many points where earlier song reviewers have quite a different perspective than the snippets give, even allowing for differences in taste.

Now I’m really excited to listen to the album, both to hear the songs individually, and also to get a feel for the album as a whole! A feast to anticipate!

ETA: The link is now working!

  105. Here’s a link to Lindsey Parker’s (from Yahoo music) 4 song review http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/realityrocks/399571/lee-dewyze-album-preview-a-promising-start/ . She said Dear Isabelle was far and away her favorite of the 4. I like what she said about Me and My Jealousy (which is a great song title, btw) “A yearning breakup ballad that builds in momentum to a crashing, chiming chorus that puts Lee’s signature rasp front and center, this Lee co-write does sound like a single to me.”

  106. Imkhemari:That Youtube link is giving me a ‘not valid’ message. Maybe RCA pulled it already? My favorite is ‘A Song About Love’ too. It’s the only song that is reminiscent of Slumberland :(

  107. “A yearning breakup ballad that builds in momentum to a crashing, chiming chorus that puts Lee’s signature rasp front and center, this Lee co-write does sound like a single to me.”

I was missing that from the snippets!! Cant wait to to hear Me and My Jealousy! :)

  108. Can’t wait to hear what Lyndsey Parker says about the whole album – hopefully tomorrow after her interview with Lee on Friday? I gather last year Jim Cantinello did an in-depth interview with Kris going through the songs one by one, I’m hoping that’s what Lindsey was doing!

The other reviewers of those 4 songs were Hitfix http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/the-beat-goes-on/posts/get-a-sneak-peek-at-american-idol-champ-lee-dewyzes-new-album ,
    Billboard http://www.billboard.com/news/lee-dewyze-reveals-four-tracks-from-new-1004120125.story#/news/lee-dewyze-reveals-four-tracks-from-new-1004120125.story ,
    and Idol Chatter http://content.usatoday.com/communities/idolchatter/post/2010/10/lee-dewyze-gets-ready-to-live-it-up/1 .
And didn’t Shirley Halperin also get the early listen, but said her full review would be out in a couple of weeks? It must be due?

Not to mention that the full album was sent to journalists Friday (was that a tweet from RCApromo?)

LOTS of reviews coming! Hope we can hear the album before then, I’d feel frustrated if they made comments that couldn’t be checked out til later!

  109. Not to mention that the full album was sent to journalists Friday (was that a tweet from RCApromo?)

I havent seen it mention by RCA, but a few journalists tweeted yesterday that they had recieved their promo copy! Not sure why we havent seen a review from Shirley Halperin yet, its been a few weeks!

PS. Twitter is not working for me tonight at all, missing you guys!!

  110. Landmd: quite a few are having problems with twitter tonight it seems! Its working OK for me, but wanted to put a post in here while I had time.

I was interested in the song reviews, actually went through and collated all the reviews under the different song headings; it’s interesting the different takes on the same song!

  111. Wow… Thank you for that YouTube link! After listening to the snippets all together several times I’m even more excited to hear the full album. I love his voice so much…and those lyrics, what a romantic he is.

  112. I found that link earlier and wore it out!! I think I have 11 favorites!! Hard to say which one will be a frontrunner until album comes out but judging from snippets, they all appeal! I also just remembered I get the bonus song from iTunes and Only Dreaming. Also not totally sure til album comes out, but I think they flow, I mean, I think they all fit together, even SS. And I love his voice on all of them.

  113. Imkhemari: Thanks for the correct link. The video is an awesome way to listen to the snippets. I tweeted it so we can all enjoy it! And wow you are so good with the details – thanks for the links to all the album reviews!

  114. Imkhemari, thanks for the links. I’ve now got BLU, M&MJ and BB permanently stuck in my head now. Which is a good thing. It’s also interesting to reread the reviews with LIU and other song snippets in mind now. Agree the coronation bit doesn’t fit LIU. Can’t wait for the whole songs. All the snippets have left me yearning for more. :)

  115. ldjfan: I wanted to get all the info about each song in one place to compare reviews, so collected the song reviews in one doc and did some cut & paste – it helped me get my head around what was being said about each one. So it was very easy to produce the links :)

The vid is so much more friendly than the Amazon page – and the scenery much better-looking!

  116. Just thought of a fun question to get us going for the week…we know that Lee will be doing 5 songs for the Walmart soundcheck (Chris Wrate tweeted that), so which 5 do you predict or hope they will be? I’ll sleep on it and give my answer in the morning ;)

  117. OK..well this is super late but here goes! OMG, i LOVE Live It Up & the snippets sound brilliant..cant imagine how amazing the full songs are gonna be :) They all just sound so LEE and im so happy that it seems to have turned out exactly the way he wanted it! I could ramble on forever like a the total fan girl that i am but i’ll stop ;) Also appreciated all the comments..took a while to get through but really cool read!

Tigervixxxen, hmm super hard question but i reckon: Sweet Serendipity, Live It Up, Dear Isabelle, Beautiful Like You, & either Me And My Jealousy or Brooklyn Bridge.

  118. Tigervixxxen, nice question! :) My guess is the same as Nabs’. I think it’s because LIU, DI, BLY and M&MJ were the 4 songs that were sent for preview, then of course Sweet Serendipity is pretty much a given.

  119. Great question Tigervixxxen, I guess SS is a must since its the first single. I hope it’ll be either LIU or BLU, M&MJ, BB and DI. :)

  120. The vid is so much more friendly than the Amazon page – and the scenery much better-looking!

thanks, imkhemari! at least we won’t have to imagine lee while listening to the snippets, lol! ;)

tigervixxxen, ooh, this is fun.. my guess would be SS, LIU (man, after hearing the studio version nonstop for days now, i just wanna hear this live), BLY, DI, MAMJ ..i think it helps that there was good feedback of the latter 4 songs sampled for the critics :)

  121. We’ll definitely see LIU and SS. Then I’m going to guess Weightless (didn’t Chris say that was his favorite to perform?). And just because I love them, BLY and BB. :) Fun game, tigervixxxen!

  122. Thanks for the replies everyone! I’m also going to say SS and LIU are a given and also thought about Weightless. The other two I’ll say Dear Isabelle and just because I want to hear the live version so bad Me and My Jealousy.

  123. Oooh, I wanna play :) Better late than never (or never than late if you are optimistic to a fault. Oops, wrong idol, anyway…)

    I’m going with:
    1) Sweet Serendipity, a no-brainer because it’s the single
    2) Brooklyn Bridge because it’s my favorite and we all know it’s all about me ;)
    3) Only Dreaming because Lee said at AP that it was one of his favorite songs he’d ever written and because then people will D/L from his website
    4) Stay Here because Lee said he wants people to dance to his music
    5) Beautiful Like You because it’s going to be the next single (says who? says me!)
Me & and Jealousy (honorable mention in case Only Dreaming doesn’t count because it’s a bonus)

  124. And late because I forgot:

Sweet Serendipity – as ItsMyT1me says its the single!
Stay Here – better than LIU for me – from the snippet anyway
Dear Isabelle – for that acoustic Lee
Me & My Jealousy – chosen instead of BLY because Lee wrote on it
    Brooklyn Bridge – jazzy/ happy

I’d really also like to hear A Song About you, but have the feeling Lee may choose Dear Isabelle instead.

Can’t wait until we hear the songs in full!
