Orianthi and Ke$ha to Perform on Idol Top 12 Results Show (David Cook, Too)

2nd Update: AINow.org reports that David will be singing a Rolling Stones song on Wednesday

UPDATE: 19News assures us in a tweet, “@thedavidcook will also be performing on Wednesday night’s American Idol results show!!” (Next time, don’t leave important news out of the press release!) Plus, it’s confirmed by American Idol news.

I just received the official press release announcing that Orianthi and Ke$sha will be performing on Wednesday’s results show.

Oddly, David Cook’s appearance isn’t mentioned in the release, even though David tweeted that he would be performing, and his  appearance is now listed on his official website.

Maybe RCA will send out a separate press release.  Or, David’s appearance is meant to be a great big surprise…

Pop sensations Ke$ha and Orianthi will take the stage on this week’s live AMERICAN IDOL results show Wednesday, March 17 (9:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed) on FOX. Tune in to see Ke$ha sing her smash single “Blah Blah Blah, ” Orianthi perform her hit “According to You” and find out who receives enough votes to stay in the competition and who is sent home.

Also this week, on Tuesday, March 16 (8:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed), a new IDOL stage will be revealed and America’s Top 12 – Didi Benami, Crystal Bowersox, Lacey Brown, Lee Dewyze, Andrew Garcia, Casey James, Aaron Kelly, Michael Lynche, Siobhan Magnus, Paige Miles, Katie Stevens and Tim Urban – will perform songs by The Rolling Stones.

Global pop superstar/singer-songwriter Ke$ha’s debut album, “Animal, ” (RCA Records/ Kemosabe Entertainment) entered the Billboard Top 200 at No. 1 and hit No. 1 on the Digital Albums charts when it was released in January. Rolling Stone said “Animal” was “ridiculously catchy, ” and The New York Times called her a “double threat” and “a pioneer.” “Animal” holds the record for the best-ever digital-album sales for a new artist and is the third-biggest digital-album debut by a female, coming in right after Taylor Swift and Britney Spears. It also marked the biggest first week for an artist’s debut album released in January in SoundScan history. Her first single, “TiK ToK, ” spent a record-setting nine weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and has sold over 4 million copies in the U.S. and nearly 10 million units worldwide.

Orianthi is a 25-year-old Australian singer-songwriter and guitarist who was featured in Michael Jackson’s comeback concert film, “This Is It.” She has also opened for and recorded with Steve Vai, backed AMERICAN IDOL Carrie Underwood and traded solos with the legendary Carlos Santana. Her debut single, “According To You, ” reached No. 6 in Australia and is the No. 2 most-played song on pop radio in the U.S. Her debut album, “Believe, ” was released at the end of last year.

  1. How odd he’s not in the press release. Either way I’ll probably be watching anyway.

and ICK at tra$ha performing blah blah blah on idol. DNW

  2. She’s singing Blah Blah Blah?! Well, I guess there will be some creative word substitution going on there. 5 second delay is your friend! LOL

I wanna see Orianthi just for the guitar solo. I don’t like the song, but she can play.

  3. I like According To You, so I’m happy with that. And she’s rather pretty to look at as well. haha

But i wanna know whats up with Cook’s appearance…

  4. Three performances on the result show! Istsn’t it unsuasual to have so many?

David Cook turning up is such a treat!

  5. David, please sing the new Idol boot song. Lie perhaps?

Surely TPTB have realized that “Leave Right Now” is not getting much love, catching on, or most importantly, selling units.

  6. But i wanna know whats up with Cook’s appearance…

You and me both. But oh well, we’ll find out when we find out. I guess. Boo.

  7. That’s really strange that Dave is mentioned nowhere in that press release.

  8. David better be one or it will give me one more reason to put a pin in my TPTB voodoo doll.

  9. You and me both. But oh well, we’ll find out when we find out. I guess. Boo.

Why do these things have to be so angst inducing? T__T

  10. By the time they finish cutting out the inappropriate parts of BBB to make it prime time friendly, there will be plenty of time for a surprise performance by Cookie – LOL!

I’m surprised Orianthi isn’t performing another single given how long ATY has been out, but I guess if the purpose is ratings for IDOL, they’d go with that song since it’s at the top of the charts now.

  11. I think it is a surprise and that he must be singing an exit song. So excited!

  12. maybe the boot song.

I’ll start the chant now: “Please let it be the boot song. Please let it be the boot song. Please let it be the boot song…”

  13. Thank God there´s Cookie! That sexy cute face of his combined with great singing because Ke$ha singing live it´s like those bad auditions. Never heard Orianthi though!

  14. It’ll be interesting to see what Kesha performs. If she does Blah Blah Blah then I guess RCA is sticking with that as a single for now. There has been speculation that she is performing another song (your love is my drug) which would signal a single change from RCA.

I guess Orianthi could also perform a new single since ATY just started dropping on the charts. But on the other side she needs to push more people to buy ATY.

And what will Coook do…? Maybe he is pretaped for next time?

  15. The whole thing is really odd. They had enough time to revise press release even if it was written up and ready to go seeing as he tweeted few days ago, yet if there were any changes I think he would have said something and Sony’s Twitter and DCO/his official Facebook would have never posted the news this morning.

    eta:
I dont think his official site or Sony would say to watch Wednesday if it was just a pretape.

  16. David better be one or it will give me one more reason to put a pin in my TPTB voodoo doll.

Word. I canceled dinner plans because I’m am THAT desperate to watch this live. If he doesn’t show up I will hurt someone.

Soooo weird DC’s not on the PR. Do they KNOW how much DC fans angst, and how to add to it? Ugh!

I don’t like According To You, but Orianthi’s guitar solo will be fun to watch. I kinda like Blah Blah Blah as a catchy/fun radio song, but I’ve seen clips of Kesha “performing” Blah Blah Blah… and it’s not good =P.

  17. Orianthi is not that great a singer, and Kesha is awful live. David will sound extra good next to these two. Finally a reason to watch a results show.

  18. Given that Orianthi and Kesha aren’t much of a real vocalists – singing linear notes – displaying more show than go, David Cook needs to be there so these kids can see how holding a note in key up and down the staff is all about. Unless their guitar technique surpasses anything Rickey has available, they aren’t going to learn much from Orianthi, or the “wasted” look from Kesha.

Orianthi and Kesha need Idol with its more than 20Mil viewers than Idol needs them.
I guess I’ll see them for the first time live this Wednesday.

  19. I don’t know if I want to live in a world where something called “Blah Blah Blah” is a “smash single.”

Help us, Cookie-wan-kenobi. You’re our only hope.

  20. For what its worth David’s bass player Monty tweeted a few hours ago that he was heading to the airport to go to LA soo..

  21. “Please let it be the boot song. Please let it be the boot song. Please let it be the boot song…”

k4dc, i’m chanting along right behind you. Carrying my cookie torch high and proud. Can’t we just make believe? just lie to me. i promise i’ll sing along at the top of my lungs…

  22. montyanderson: Like The Beatles say…woke up, got out of bed…and not necessarily the next line. Headed to that place we all love..the airport; LA today.
about 7 hours ago via web

    Thanks Trina.

  23. He has nothing to promote at present. Oh well. Maybe he’ll sing something from Phantom.

  24. Is there any chance that Orianthi or David are going to play guitar for the contestants since this is Stones week? (I’d rather hear David sing a song of his own — just speculating.)

Edit: Just saw that Orianthi has a song listed. So maybe not.

  25. I actually quite like Tik Tok and Blah Blah Blah. At first I thought Tik Tok was nothing new, but it grew on me, and now I think Kesha’s stuff is pretty fun for going out, etc., and her lyrics and her whole look/persona are humorous/amusing. I kind of slot her in with Britney (though she’s obviously not as big as Britney yet)– guilty pleasures, aka fun girl pop that don’t rely on good live vocals. But that said, I have no desire to watch her live. And Orianthi bores me. She only seems to stand out when she’s shredding in the background. But we’ll see. Maybe these girls will surprise me.

But who am I kidding, I care so little about how they do compared to DC. I wanna say DC is awesome all the time and will kill it, but I will angst a little because Come Back To Me last year was really underwhelming. I’m reassured because DC is definitely not doing CBTM again, but I’m still worried, cuz that’s what I do =P.

  26. The only thing that makes me think it’s NOT the boot song is that don’t they usually have the artist perform it the last night of competition? You know, since the next night, instead of “you’re going home” it’s all about the winnah? Because that’s how they’ve done it the last three or four seasons I recall:

Season 5: Daniel Powter, “Bad Day” – live the last night
Season 6: Daughtry, “Home” – don’t know, didn’t watch that year
Season 7: Ruben Studdard, “Celebrate Me Home” – live the last night
Season 8: Carrie Underwood, “Home Sweet Home” – live the last night

So if David DID get the boot song he wouldn’t perform it until May, right?

  27. It’s already been announced that the boot song is going to be the same for the entire season so I doubt his appearance has anything to do with that.

I was hoping for Kris to get the song, but at this point i’d take anything over the sucky song they’ve chosen.

  28. It seems like Cook was just a last minute addition. Maybe they had an opening and just asked him if he wanted to sing. Honestly, and I say this as a David Cook fan, I didn’t expect him to be on the show at all this year. Idols don’t necessarily come back EVERY year do they? He has nothing to promote, and wouldn’t even May be WAY too early to debut a new single? There is no way the album will be out before Fall. (Admittedly, I’m not following real closely so maybe I am off on the time-line). Anyway, it will be great to see him, whatever he sings.

Kesha is a good songwriter though (as opposed to Britney). The songs on her album are pure pop gold and she writes for others as well.

  30. I figured if we saw him at ALL it would either be tied into IGB, or towards the end (since wasn’t there a thought that he might have a single in May with a late summer album release?). nvm, saw the above post. Let me amend…if we saw him at all it would be for IGB, PERIOD.

  31. Well I expected him to make an appearance in some capacity on IGB since you dont need something to promote to be on there and he’s mentioned IGB not long ago. But hey if he has nothing to promote and they just called him for the hell of it to sing? Thank you god for letting him still be managed by Simon Fuller then because its a rare thing. So many people would kill for a performance slot on Idol.

cookbunny yes ITA. The biggest speculation I’m seeing everywhere is a new boot song will launch and it makes absolutely zero sense.

  32. He has nothing to promote, and wouldn’t even May be WAY too early to debut a new single? There is no way the album will be out before Fall.

Like cookbunny said, it’s certainly possible that they could put out a single in late May for a late summer release (technically, anything before 9/22 is still the summer). Cook’s singles have tended to grow slowly, so a two-to-three month lead time wouldn’t be a problem for an August release.

And I don’t think there’s “no way” it could arrive before then. They’ve demoed out all the songs in the writing sessions, and it sounds like that RCA A&R assistant guy likes the material (which presumably means that his boss does, too). The band is largely composed of members who turned around indie albums on a dime (sometimes almost literally); I expect that they won’t waste time in the studio.

I admit that I still don’t know what’s happening this week, but even if the message is “hey, new album coming later,” it might be in Cook’s best interest to get that out now before the viewership slides (as it seems to be doing).

  33. He has nothing to promote, and wouldn’t even May be WAY too early to debut a new single? There is no way the album will be out before Fall. (Admittedly, I’m not following real closely so maybe I am off on the time-line). Anyway, it will be great to see him, whatever he sings

    .

From the bits and pieces Dave has mentioned in interviews, it appears the schedule is to shoot for a single in the spring and the album rollout in the summer, which would be how Daughtry’s record was rolled out last year. That said, it does seem awfully early to be singing something off the new record. Dave likes to do the unexpected though, so never say never.

  34. Wow, I had no idea there was talk of a possible summer release for Cook’s album, that seems really quick. But, I have been a bit out of the loop. :) If that is true, he could definitely benefit from another appearence sometime in May.

Maybe they figured out they would need Cook to keep the AI audience from totally freaking out and tuning out after Blah, Blah, Blah (sorry, I know Kesha is the “IT” girl right now, and I even think Tik Tok is catchy, but BBB is horrible)

  35. This Will Be AWESOME!!!!

It’d be nice to see dc again,
    and I F*%KING ADORE KE$HA AND ORIANTHI!!!!!! :)

Btw,mj,not a big deal, but you misspelled ke$ha in your write-up

  36. Is there any word on any performances being taped in advance on Tuesday? I’m going to that taping!

  37. I’m only watching for Cook and Orianthi. I could care less about Tra$ha. I can’t watch women sing who don’t behave like women. (/rant)

This whole Cook situation is intriguing. I don’t know what to make of it.

  38. Oh so fun, TNP! But don’t they typically put that in your tickets, if there’s an extra performance taping? I think I heard through the grapevine that folks attending Wednesday’s show had Kesha and Orianthi on their tickets, so if anything, maybe DC will be taped? Or who knows, a performer on a future week?

Kesha is a good songwriter though (as opposed to Britney). The songs on her album are pure pop gold and she writes for others as well.

I appreciate that about her, but honestly, for that genre, it doesn’t matter too much who wrote the songs because it’s mindless pop to me. As long as the songs jive with the image of the pop singer, I’m cool. The thing about Britney (I LOVED her back in the day) was that her songs weren’t written by her, but they always went with her image. So at least her people were good at picking the right songs. But I do find that pop singers these days with the better songs tend to have writing credits (Gaga, Katy Perry, Pink, etc). How old is Kesha anyway? I find her writing– not musical style, but lyrics a little reminiscent of the stuff that Avril wrote as a teen. Lots of young-girl text-speak (sk8ter boi, hey hey you you I don’t like your boyfriend, etc.). Full disclosure, also floved Avril stuff back in the day. If Kesha is in her mid-20s I may be a little disappointed/potentially embarrassed for her.

Oh, does anyone know if Orianthi writes her own songs? Cuz I find the couple I’ve heard a little bland.

  39. ^^ I’m here to answer your questions…

How old is Kesha?: Kesha is 23 (b. 1 Mar 1987).

    —–
Does Orianthi write her own stuff?: Orianthi wrote or co-wrote 8/11 songs on “Believe”, which was released 2009.

I couldn’t find the writing credits for her debut album “Violet Journey”, which was released 2007.

ETA: She didn’t write or co-write her single.
(Seems like a running theme with labels)

Video of Kesha singing BBB live. How do they make this song family friendly??

Well, so I finally see what Kesha’s schtick is – and that’s a very good question. Some unappetizing options here – A song about co-dependency that I’ll watch for the guitar work, and a chant that will likely break the Bleep Button, maybe with New, Improved choreography. I haven’t been missing anything there.

And WTF!Cook, performing who knows what? Which, whatever it is, is cool with me.

Nobody knows what to make of it still, Seriously, even after many pages of speculation, in many places….and that’s likely affording no little amusement in the Cook Camp – considering that David is such a Big Tease likes his surprises! ;)

  41. WTF now several people are asking DC on Twitter rumors about next Wednesday. Where is all this coming from?? Could Sony and his official site have gotten wrong info about this week?

  42. I think Keshas songs are better than Gagas (ha!). I really like her CD Animal, though BBB is probably my least favourite track (except Stephen, wtf was that Kesha???). I loooooove Kiss N’Tell, I play it really loud in the car!

  43. Could Sony and his official site have gotten wrong info about this week?

His official site gets news the same way we do. LOL It really sucks.

  44. Thanks seriously. Okay, she just turned 23… ver-ry borderline for me, for you =P. I thought maybe she was 20 or 21. Despite singing about bottles of Jack, I didn’t necessarily think she had to be legal– I mean it’s Top 40 stuff. What-evs. We have Timbaland writing songs like “The Way I Are”, and the BEP’s singing about “Imma be chillin’ with my mutha mutha crew”, so catchy beats and hooks, rather than lyrical poignancy, rule the day.

  45. WTF now several people are asking DC on Twitter rumors about next Wednesday. Where is all this coming from?? Could Sony and his official site have gotten wrong info about this week?

There are people in the fandom who insist that everyone who has ever had a business relationship with the man is secretly reading a copy of “Screwing Over David Cook for Fun and Profit.” So, any discrepancy in media messages, no matter how many potential explanations there are, and no matter how many times we’ve seen Cook manage expectations when things go awry, is proof that something is unsettled and needs more confirmation.

I do think the lack of attention to the press release is lame, tbh. Even if another release arrives under separate cover, some journalists might already have filed their stories. But I don’t feel the need to be reassured when Cook announced the appearance five whole days before the show. In that kind of timeframe, he’d know for sure.

  46. Video of Kesha singing BBB live. How do they make this song family friendly??

The bleep button will help a lot.

Wait ’til Lady Antebellum shows up. That’s a song about drunk dialing your ex for a late night booty call. LOL. No one will notice ’cause they’ll have cowboy hats on. Perhaps Ke$ha shoudl sing Blah Blah Blah with Leean Rhimes.

  47. yippe, another over-rated pop “singer” is peforming. soooooo excited (yawn). hmm, hopefully kesha will brush her hair…honey, if you want to replicate sexy/dirty bed hair, see kate moss or marissa miller for examples and not the local homeless lady on the corner. i am happy cook is returning, and hope they continue this trend of showcasing past idols on every and each results show.

  48. I think Keshas songs are better than Gagas (ha!).

I find Kesha’s stuff a lot more palatable and easily digestible pop than Gaga’s, whose voice and songs can be abrasive and at times even unpleasant. Gaga isn’t necessarily my thing, but objectively speaking, I applaud her for trying different sounds and breaking *some* new ground (as much as one can do that in this particular brand of pop). Kesha’s stuff is like candy. Really flighty stuff. I think Gaga has a better shot at makign a more lasting impact/ have a longer-lasting musical career at this point. But of course, time will tell.

Heh, I’m using this discussion on Kesha as a distraction from DC angst. I doubt we’ll get any more news/helpful info before Wednesday at this point. For the record, I quite enjoy Kesha’s stuff for what it is. She’s kinda like this year’s Katy Perry, except I may like her more (I only really liked Hot n Cold from KP).

  49. There are people in the fandom who insist that everyone who has ever had a business relationship with the man is secretly reading a copy of “Screwing Over David Cook for Fun and Profit.”

Yes, the Cook fandom has the most inexplicable global persecution complex that I’ve ever seen.

I have no clue what’s going on this week but I have absolutely no doubt Dave will be appearing on Idol one way or another at least once this season. He’s immensely popular with the Idol audience, he’s the best-selling Idol since Daughtry (and the most successful winner since Carrie), and he’s 19’s golden boy. Even if schedules get shuffled around this week I consider the mere possibility that he’d be on this early a gift. If he gets pushed back later in the season it’s just something fun to look forward to in this so-far disappointing season – not evidence of the anti-Cook conspiracy theories that haunt so many of his fans.

ETA: Well, as far as the boys in the band are concerned, they’re on for Wednesday night. From Cook’s bandmate Andy Skib:

    @andyskib
gettin ready for rehearsal today…see you all on the TV Wednesday. Tune in…

  50. Here’s a tweet from Andy. Looks definite to me.

  51. She’s kinda like this year’s Katy Perry, except I may like her more (I only really liked Hot n Cold from KP).

Oh, I could sort of live with WUIV, but Hot n Cold made me want to stab myself with an icepick rather than hear it again. (Still better than Ur So Gay, which made me want to immolate myself first and THEN stab, just to be sure. Cats. Wailing.) Tik Tok hasn’t sent me to either stage, yet. BBB might if I have to hear it enough, though.

And aww, Skibby. Thanks for doing what you do.

  52. Well that sure sounds pretty definite to me, unless 19E is so stupid they forgot to clue the band in there was a change? lol

Yes, the Cook fandom has the most inexplicable global persecution complex that I’ve ever seen.

Completely agree. I mostly read WNH but I made the mistake of skimming the DCO messsge board yesterday and I felt like I needed a strong dose of Valium afterwords.

  53. Oh, I could sort of live with WUIV, but Hot n Cold made me want to stab myself with an icepick rather than hear it again. LOL, mileage. I thought Hot n Cold was so catchy and cheeky. I Kissed a Girl was catchy but annoying. WUIV was just plain annoying, and she sounded like @ss on it. Tik Tok is way more fun than Blah Blah Blah, but BBB is a pretty funny song too. I have a feeling you may hate it =P.

  54. They always have past Idols on the results shows, at least in the beginning, but – when or are they ever going to have Jason Castro back? they had the dueling bobsy twins on their kareoke pianos last week, anyone else would have done better than them? I hope Jason will be back on soon, it would be so good for him

  55. Yes, the Cook fandom has the most inexplicable global persecution complex that I’ve ever seen.

LMAO! – Hey – it was much better yesterday – ;) I call it Murphy’s Law with a Twist – Whatever can go wrong already has, and will into perpetuity. It’s amusing for a while, but I can’t take much of it.

  56. I think maybe he is taping his performance. That is why there is no official release?

  57. I think Keshas songs are better than Gagas (ha!).

oh no you didn’t! saga I really thought we had a connection, lol

    I’m on #teamsurprisebootsong

  58. Is there ever any leaks from rehersal?

Oh, c’mon now, seriously! Are you new? ;) There’s never any leaks in the Cook Song Choice Cone of Silence — unless he wants there to be. I secretly think that Joey got kicked out of the band because he was the only one who ever leaked stuff that maybe they didn’t want anyone to know. Joey may have been the only crack in The Cone that I can recall.

saga, I would be more excited if there was a #teamsurprisebootiesong. Now that I’d pay a dollar and a half to see (or possibly much more).

  59. I’m on #teamsurpriseliveEP… even though it’s unlikely. But I really have no clue, haha. I’m also on #teamplatinumLOpresentation-as-long-as-he-doesn’t-sing-it, LOL.

  60. Here is the tweet from 19E:

19News: Taking the stage on this week’s American Idol results show on Wednesday will be pop sensations @Orianthi & @KESHASUXX http://bit.ly/bFSlbt

  61. I think maybe he is taping his performance. That is why there is no official release?

Not likely since Andy said see you on tv Wednesday.
Still hoping that they figured out how crapy the boot song really is and decided to change it with Cook’s song.

  62. Oh, c’mon now, seriously! Are you new? There’s never any leaks in the Cook Song Choice Cone of Silence — unless he wants there to be. I secretly think that Joey got kicked out of the band because he was the only one who ever leaked stuff that maybe they didn’t want anyone to know. ROFLMAO. The Cone of Silence! I like your Joey theory… he did spoil the MWK concert coming up. haha

  63. #teamsurpriseliveEP would be awesome! I’ve only been to one concert and he’s really much better live than the album.

    I really think it’s #teamsurprisebootsong though.

  64. Ughh…I was hoping he would stay far away from idol and make this season way more enjoyable. At least Orianthi and Ke$ha will be entertaining.

  65. ROFLMAO. The Cone of Silence! I like your Joey theory… he did spoil the MWK concert coming up. haha

Yes he did – and now he owes Andy tea and crumpets! Cracks me up. The word in the beginning of The Neverending DeTewer was always – “Ask Joey, Joey will Talk.”

ETA: See how tricksy Idol is, Gangreen? Something for everyone. *Chuckle*

  66. Yes, the Cook fandom has the most inexplicable global persecution complex that I’ve ever seen.

    :Lol

I do believe that the Cook fandom is uniquely angsty, even amongst the over invested groupies of AI (though i may well be wrong). I find it both strange and yet weirdly wonderful.

  67. @thedavidcook: I love writing with @hodgesmusic. mainly because I just beat him at ping-pong. but also because of the songs, i suppose…
    16 minutes ago via web

I think that’s a hint. *whistles Ewe and Eye*

  68. Ughh…I was hoping he would stay far away from idol and make this season way more enjoyable.

How does one person make a whole season less enjoyable? All TVs have an off button, and DVRs have a fastforward button. LOL

  69. How does one person make a whole season less enjoyable? All TVs have an off button, and DVRs have a fastforward button. LOL

Because David Cook ruined idol, and not in a good way like people like to pretend, so I hate having him back on the show as a reminder of the damage he has done.

  70. Ughh…I was hoping he would stay far away from idol and make this season way more enjoyable.

Wow! That’s some power! One 3 minute performance has the strength to ruin an entire season…:lol

  71. Yes, the Cook fandom has the most inexplicable global persecution complex that I’ve ever seen.

I think Cook’s general bussing on F2 night and Cowell’s “knockout” comment really did a number on his fans. It’s now in our DNA. Basically the MO is: If there is a way for David Cook to get screwed by TPTB (label, management, TV, press, anyone in the world that could possibly help his career), it will get done. There is an enemy around every corner all waiting to do him in. But on the flipside, the angst always comes with a side of the resurrection story of Cook coming in to save the day that has been almost lost just by being his awesome self (as he did when he won S7 when the headlines were all but printed about an Archuleta win a la Dewey Defeats Truman).

  72. Because David Cook ruined idol, and not in a good way like people like to pretend, so I hate having him back on the show as a reminder of the damage he has done.

Alrighty then…. whatever floats your boat. :)

  73. Monty RT’d Andy’s tweet with a little something extra. heh

montyanderson: # RT @andyskib gettin ready for rehearsal today…see you all on the TV Wednesday. Tune in…///All I need to add to that is Hey-oh!!

  74. Because David Cook ruined idol, and not in a good way like people like to pretend, so I hate having him back on the show as a reminder of the damage he has done.

If by that you mean “he helped raise expectations that a contestant, who is supposed to get a recording contract if they win, has to show some connection with/fresh approaches towards the songs each week, thereby suggesting what kind of album they are going to make afterward, and also has to show that they will be able to make decisions on the same tight timeframe that will be reflected in that post-win album,” then no, I don’t think myself or many of the media commentators out there are pretending it’s a good thing. Some people may genuinely think it’s an improvement.

You don’t have to agree, but my preferences are my preferences, not some trumped-up sentiment.

  75. Well, Cook certainly changed Idol for me, because I haven’t been able to watch it seriously or get that interested in anyone else since…:lol

But I think that’s true for a number of fans of different contestants every season.

And I guess for those who really loved Idol as it existed in the earliest seasons, seeing musician, singer/songwriter types, coming through may well have spoiled what they enjoyed.

But the flipside of that is that for some viewers like myself (and I’ve watched since season 3) it has changed it from mindless entertainment, easily forgotten once the season is over, into something which has the potential at least, to produce singers who make interesting music that I might want to buy.

For me, the problem with this season is that they are trying to replicate the success of season 7 – because yes, media bs apart, it was successful and it spawned a successful winner and runner up – but Idol never really appreciated either the talents or the personalities that made season 7 work so well. Crystal Bowersox apart, this year’s crew totally lack the charm or singing talent of the top 10 of that season (ignoring KLCook).

What I find strange is that they’ve just had a very media successful season in season 8 (not my favourite overall, but with a strong trio in Kradison)and they haven’t tried to build on that at all.

Anyhow – different strokes for different folks and all that. But whatever the pov, I’d be surprised to see AI last much longer – without Paula and Simon.

  76. 19E now confirms it MJ. Hee

19News: # @thedavidcook will also be performing on Wednesday night’s American Idol results show!!

  77. If by that you mean “he helped raise expectations that a contestant, who is supposed to get a recording contract if they win, has to show some connection with/fresh approaches towards the songs each week, thereby suggesting what kind of album they are going to make afterward, and also has to show that they will be able to make decisions on the same tight timeframe that will be reflected in that post-win album,”

No, what I meant was that he made idol about who can surf the net best and find another person’s cover and try and pass it off as your own artistic work, and also that idol became who can create the most controversy and attention for their preidol work to try and advance themselves farther on the show by having it “pulled” halfway through the competition and then mysteriously have it come back online shortly after. Sorry if I don’t want to see someone who was so blatantly manipulative back on the show.

  78. cookbunny: The only thing that makes me think it’s NOT the boot song is that don’t they usually have the artist perform it the last night of competition? You know, since the next night, instead of “you’re going home” it’s all about the winnah?
So if David DID get the boot song he wouldn’t perform it until May, right?

The show will generally operate in it’s own best interests. The Will Young song is bland and has received horrid reviews from Idol fans. Many also believe that the boot song should be sung by an actual *American* Idol, a succesful one, say…a winner.

It seems that David isn’t ready to put a single out just yet. Why not promote the change to an awesome new boot song NOW and come back to sing a single later in the season when an album release date may be in sight?

I’m imagining a black stage. A single spotlight in which the sad, sad outline of a mullet appears. Or a banana, and the silhouette of super curly hair, a pair of feather earrings. The David’s voice, acapella singing “Lie”…

  79. Wow! That’s some power! One 3 minute performance has the strength to ruin an entire season…:lol

That’s nothing! Adam’s got the moral degradation of an entire generation of children on his shoulders, lol.

    I’m on #teamcookmadeidolbetter too.

  80. Gangreen – other acts before Cook founds unusual covers of songs and performed them on the show.

And I can’t tell you how old that whole ‘he was a cover stealer’ thing is. In fact it’s so old that it’s actually making me laugh and stopping me in mid-indignation tracks.

I mean seriously – we’re rehashing a two year old ‘cover stealer controversy’ thing here…

But anyhow, for the record, Cook did 3 unusual covers: the two Beatles songs and BJ.

Hello, Little Sparrow, All I Really Need Is You and The World I Know, at the very least, were original rearrangements by him.

Maybe the Cook fans should just come up with a standard disclaimer that one of them could post every time this old chestnut reappears. :lol

  81. I think Cook’s general bussing on F2 night and Cowell’s “knockout” comment really did a number on his fans. It’s now in our DNA.

I don’t think you are far off there, Keel – The flip side of that is the story of 12 million votes, (not voters, TYVM Media types) and the power of “Hell to the no!” – but it does tend to create an atmosphere of eternal vigilance in some areas. It’s kind of sweet, IMO – as long as people realize they don’t always have to go to battle with anyone who pops up. They”re learning. Sure has made for a super informed fandom, when it comes to the facts of the matter…there’s that.

    And it’s almost WednesDave – ;)

  82. That’s nothing! Adam’s got the moral degradation of an entire generation of children on his shoulders, lol.

Yep – you’ve sure got to give it to these ex-idols: they have influence!

  83. Beyond what fadetowhite said, this “passing off as own work” thing has always struck me as BS no matter who was being accused of it. I don’t particularly care if Crystal Bowersox came up with her own arrangements in the past few weeks, either. I just care that she performed versions that suited her.

And I never got to purchase that “mysterious” version of AH before it got taken off of Amazon. I still can’t buy it now. I bet he lost out on at least 40,000 unit sales because of that. Yeah, that totally sounds like the kind of outcome he was planning on.

I don’t think the guy manipulated anyone. Sorry you don’t see it that way.

  84. Oh and – and I’m not even fully sure why I’m getting into this, but thankfully, after this post, I’m going to bed – other Idols in Season 7 had preidol albums available for sale. Cook’s was the only one that made a splash on itunes and it was the only one pulled.

It has never since been made available for legitimate sale, although it is possible to get hold of a download copy, not through official sources.

It’s a strange world in which putting out good albums, completely off your own bat and without any kind of contract, indie or otherwise, is seen as a bad thing for an aspiring artist.

Oh and BJ was clearly signalled as a Chris Cornell cover before Cook sang it. The other two Cook said he acknowledged them and it was cut.

And now I really do feel as though I’ve travelled through some peculiar time warp and am engaged in one of those awful and interminable Cook vs Archie debates that were so common towards the end of and especially after AI7.

If nothing else, I have to thank you for reminding me how fantastic it is that both groups of fans have moved way beyond that tit for tat stuff and how many of them embrace both of these artists now.

  85. It’s a strange world in which putting out good albums, completely off your own bat and without any kind of contract, indie or otherwise, is seen as a bad thing for an aspiring artist.

It is a bad thing when the prior work is influencing voting, and creating support for a contestant from something that has nothing to do with the show, you can directly make the connection between the hype around David Cook’s cd to Andrew Garcia surviving to today because of his youtube videos.

  86. Yep well – last comment. Cook’s album was the first AI album I have ever bought and I bought it on the strength of Analogue Heart and the Axium albums.

Frankly, I still would have thought he was by far and away the best performer on AI7 and would have been rooting for him to win: that happened after Billie Jean, though my interest had already been caught by Hello earlier on.

No other contestant even came close for me, nor I suspect for pretty much every other Cook voting fan.

The pre-idol work made me interested in Cook as a post idol artist.

He’d already long ago won the AI battle by the time I was invested enough to look for extra information (thus finding the preidol stuff) via the net…and many Cook fans never found it and still haven’t heard it!

  87. While I certainly am not a Cook fan (or Archie for that matter. Stopped watching the season after top 4), he didn’t start the trend. Daughtry got a lot of grief for doing a Live version of a cover; people claimed he was taking credit for it, although he didn’t. So I know the practice went pact to at least season 5 (though I’m sure others can note from even earlier seasons.

  88. Ke$ha is irritating. I had to goto iTunes to hear who Orianthi even was–a faux rocker chick? Yawn. I do hope Cook performs.

  89. you can directly make the connection between the hype around David Cook’s cd to Andrew Garcia surviving to today because of his youtube videos.

I think Garcia is surviving because of his “original” and “daring” take on a classic pop song. I think most people voting have no idea his youtubes exist. My friend who likes the show but never checks online had no idea and she still liked him because of Straight Up. (If it makes you hopeful, she is now bored by him and feels like he hasn’t been able to maintain the magic.)

Kristy Lee Cook and Carly Smithson both had preidol CDS – do you think that is why they placed where they did in the competition? I think if you are a fan, you will seek out more material, but that doesn’t mean you’ll vote any less. Jason Castro didn’t have a CD but he came in fourth.

However, this still supports your argument that – for you – those arrangements aren’t enjoyable.

  90. I don’t particularly care if Crystal Bowersox came up with her own arrangements in the past few weeks, either. I just care that she performed versions that suited her.

ITA. I don’t care whose version the contestants do. Unless they specifically state, “oh this was something I came up with” a thus make a false claim, why should it even be an issue? Especially when covering an older song and using a more contemporary take, I’d rather hear something different than the original. ex. gr. Mad World. I love the Gary Jules version, hate the original dancy pop version by TfF.

  91. Heh. Just read the twitter feed of some Cook fans and that whole global persecution complex re David Cook. Methinks some people just need to get back on their meds. Yeesh.

  92. Daughtry got a lot of grief for doing a Live version of a cover; people claimed he was taking credit for it, although he didn’t. So I know the practice went pact to at least season 5 (though I’m sure others can note from even earlier seasons.

Well yeah, I’m sure it happened before Cook. But since Cook, new arrangements with significant changes are kind of a must. And the show became arrangement and guitar playing competition. And I hate that. Before Cook, people appreciated good singing. Now they appreciate average singing and guitar strumming more. And the sad thing is, Cook is actually awesome compared to the wannabes that are competing on the show right now.

Don’t get me wrong, cool rearrangement of a well known song every once in a while is good. Problems start when all contestants try to do that every week.

I’m looking forward to Orianthi and Ke$ha this week.

  93. It is a bad thing when the prior work is influencing voting, and creating support for a contestant from something that has nothing to do with the show

Maybe it is or isn’t fair to form an opinion on a contestant’s prior work but the reality is that some people have been working musicians and have material out in the world. Lee and Crystal are considered front runners in their respective gender groups (we’ll see how that changes once the group mixes for the top 12) and I find it hard to believe their prior work had absolutely nothing to do with that. I’ve seen first hand the downloads and links to Lee and Crystal’s work circulate around the internet and people seem to really enjoy them. I don’t understand why Idol has to be viewed in a vacuum where the general public must only take into consideration the 90 seconds they perform each week. Because the reality of the situation is they are expected to sell millions of singles and albums about 9 months from now. Any material that can convince the voting public that these contestants are worthy of an investment to become the next commercial star seems fair to enter the equation. I personally prefer to elect someone as the next American Idol who can actually do something with the opportunity.

  94. Ok since were blaming him for ruining American Idol can I just start blaming him for the suckiness that is Tim Urban?? Tim sang a DC song in Hollywood and the judges liked it enough that they put him through, so basically its Davids fault Tim is still here right?!?!

  95. I wonder if TPTB intentionally left DC off of the press release because there is a surprise song being performed, or because he hasn’t yet decided what he will perform.

Obviously a majority of IDOL fans will be thrilled to see him back on stage (we won’t worry about the 1 or 2 people who won’t be thrilled), which will possibly bring back some “lost fans” (to Lost? LOL) due to the poor performing S9 contestants (overall, not all of them). Orianthi and Ke$ha may bring in new viewers who love their music, but may not have ever watched IDOL for one reason or another, which is a reason to announce their current “hot” songs being performed on the show.

All in all, it’s a great combination to maximize viewership of the Wednesday night performance show, no matter what DC performs.

  96. Ok since were blaming him for ruining American Idol can I just start blaming him for the suckiness that is Tim Urban?? Tim sang a DC song in Hollywood and the judges liked it enough that they put him through, so basically its Davids fault Tim is still here right?!?!

    LOL.

  97. It is a bad thing when the prior work is influencing voting, and creating support for a contestant from something that has nothing to do with the show, you can directly make the connection between the hype around David Cook’s cd to Andrew Garcia surviving to today because of his youtube videos.

Respectfully have to disagree here. Cook fans looked up his old music AFTER they became fans on the show. It may have made them more interested in what he might do as an artist after the show was over, but it wasn’t what initially made them fans. Andrew Garcia brought in a pre-existing fanbase of people who knew him from you-tube and, other than in Hollywood, has never lived up to the advance billing from his -pe-idol work. Completely the opposite situation, IMO

As far as rearrangements go, I would argue that Dave rearranged songs to deal with the theme weeks, so that they would suit his voice and the type of artist he is. Ditto with Kris. Rearranging just for the sake of rearranging is a gimmick that gets old fast, and I think that’s what we’re seeing with Garcia this year.

  98. Looking forward to the results show. When Ke$ha first came out, I wanted no part of her music, but now I find myself singing along without realizing it. The songs are very catchy. Orianthi plays a mean guitar. I love her guitar solo on Adam’s “Sleepwalker.” It will be good to hear David sing, he has a great voice. One thing I miss about Paula is when any of the idols come back to perform, she always stood up and danced and gave them recognition by enjoying their performance. I have not seen any of the judges do that for any of the returning contestants. It will also be interesting to see who gets cut. I was surprised by some of the cuts last week so let’s see who steps up to the plate to do a solid performance of a Stone’s classic.

  99. Tim sang a DC song in Hollywood and the judges liked it enough that they put him through, so basically its Davids fault Tim is still here right?!?!

Bwahahah! Also, “Hallelujah”! that one can be Jason Castro’s fault. See what they started? From a balanced season that had two people in the indie/folk genre – Jason and Brooke – it’s proliferated like Gremlins fed after midnight – TPTB stacked up so many they cannibalize each other’s votes. But hey, the producers picked them, and the judges sing their ‘make it your own’ mantra at them, so I guess that’s where the finger points. They get the show they designed, KWIM? (and so do we) I’m just surprised they didn’t stack it with alt/pop rockers – maybe next year, if that’s the way the charts go. ;)

The appearance on Wednesday is the only rocker that interests me. Nice to see Official Channels get their pipeline cleared, finally. They could use a plumber, instead of so many VP’s.

Nicer still, that David told us five days before, and didn’t make us wait. So everyone could angst, I mean plan ahead and anticipate, yeah, that’s it.

  100. I meant to add this, but didnt Blake Lewis do the whole re-arranging thing? Season 6 as a whole is a blur to me but I do remember his You Give Love a Bad Name and that was most definitely a major change-up to the original. Or is it David considered the one who changed everything because he actually went on to win?

eta: wut! AINow just posted hes doing a Stones song!

  101. AAAAH. The angsting is over…sorta. Now we have to figure out which Stones song. ;)

  102. According to AINow, David will be doing a Rolling Stones song..

Wow that is interesting. Now, if we could just figure out which one it is. heh

  103. Oh yay, he’s doing a cover! Now I can pull out Official Cook Fan reason #537 why performing that cover on AI would be a complete disaster for his career and how TPTB are forcing him to do it so they can drop him from the label as soon as he finishes performing. *looks at watch* Yup, it’s about that time. Celebrate for 1.5 seconds and then angst and cook up conspiracy theories for the next 72 hours.

ETA: Oh wait, what am I saying? AINow isn’t even an official source. This is Cook’s impenetrable Cone of Silence we’re talking about. There’s no way they would know what he’s singing unless Cook told them . . . or the band invited Joey Clement to watch rehearsals.

  104. AINow? Do they have any credibility as spoilers? What’s their track record? There were always places that purported to ‘know’ – and were wrong, every week- I’ll reserve judgement.

Now when they say Kesha is doing that BBB song – that’s already been announced, and I can picture the poor Bleep Button operator sending out for coffee. ;) Could be interesting to see how much of the song is left on the Family Show.

ETA: That whole post is funny – this – ” or the band invited Joey Clement to watch rehearsals.” is priceless.

  105. Ugh. I don’t really like the Stones. I was already dreading listening to 12 covers of them. Not really enthused about this. Sigh. I guess if anybody’s going to make me like an RS song it’ll be Dave and the Anthemic. Still seems weird to have him on just to perform a cover.

  106. BWHAHA Keel you must be psychic because its starting already. God help me. Its gonna be a looong couple of days. I’m fine with anything, especially if he rocks out, but considering how last minute this is really what is the point? Did they just decide since its a rocking theme this week it would be good to see him on there? Mindboggling.

  107. LOL! Keel, I am so not going anywhere near DCO. For at least a few minutes anyway. Heh.

Stones cover for a charity download maybe? I know, I started the speculation again. I am a bad, bad girl.

  108. But since Cook, new arrangements with significant changes are kind of a must.

Yes, others used different arrangements occasionally before Season 7, but after 7, it went from a theme-based necessity to a strategy for winning. Now, it seems like if you can’t put a different spin on a song, you aren’t a contender.

  109. AINow? Do they have any credibility as spoilers? What’s their track record? There were always places that purported to ‘know’ – and were wrong, every week- I’ll reserve judgement.

This. Team Cook never leaks. And if they were going to start, why would it be to AINow?

  110. I’m hoping David C. will do a Stones cover on the show. First, because if it’s a charity download, then it’s likely going for a good cause, and second, because I’ve never really liked any of his original music. But he’s usually pretty solid at performing covers – at least he was back during Season 7. Whether he stole arrangements or not, I don’t know or care, but it’s interesting that the issue doesn’t seem to have gone away.

I think they’re bring back the specialist to show these S9 contestants how it should be done, LOL! They apparently didn’t get it after they watched Kris do LIB for Haiti!

  112. According to AINow, David will be doing a Rolling Stones song..

I wonder if this will be another charity single for IGB. Personally, I’d love it if they did this each week instead of having the special telethon episode.

  113. As somebody who sought out and successfully purchased Analog Heart before it got pulled, let me just say that I only sought it out AFTER I was sold on Cook the artist. And I’m the only Cook fan I’ve ever met in the non-Internet world who even knows the album exists. I hardly think it led to his victory on the show. That seems like quite a stretch.

And as far as Cook “ruining” the show by successfully pulling off “Rearrangement Idol,” any contestant is free to change the game at any time by successfully pulling off something else that everybody else wants to emulate in future seasons. It seems silly to me to fault somebody for being successful.

  114. Its a cover-charity single-boot song like Carrie had last year!

    Okay, I’m just kidding. LOL.

but if it’s true, that seems like a waste of an AI appearance. Couldn’t they have waited for him to have something to promote/sell before having him on?

If he has a single ready in time they’ll probably have him back on. In the meantime it keeps his name and face out there during the period between albums. Everybody wins.

  115. If they make him lead this year’s top 12 in the Stones pointy pose song or something, I reserve my right to kill my television.

  116. How do we know he’s not doing a new single on Wednesday? Maybe they produced it in Sweden. (I’m an optimist.)

  117. Why would people believe without question a completely non official site that announces they deal in rumor, right in their Masthead?

AI Now | American Idol Now | “American Idol” News, Rumors & Interviews

And then go off and follow Keel’s scenario for a meltdown? .They didn’t want to believe David’s own announcement on Twitter, but ‘this’ is credible? Peoples is very strange.

  118. We’ll based on what both David and David Hodges tweeted today he’s STILL writing songs. I said yesterday I had a feeling everything was a little behind and the recording may not get started till after he originally aniticipated so if they realize he just may not have a single ready to get on AI this season maybe this was the next best solution to give him a slot on the show..?

Speaking just for myself I’m believing AINow because while they may post a lot of rumors they’ve also posted stuff that was correct. When they posted about the boot song they got confirmation from a 19E rep.

  119. Cook performing on AI season 9. I’ll take it! Woo…Hoo. Why the angst! He is on TV. Possibly performing a really bad ass cover from the RS…

  120. AINow interviews former stars from Idol and had a lengthy Q&A with Katy Allen last year; they do have an “in” on some level.

  121. while they may post a lot of rumors they’ve also posted stuff that was correct. When they posted about the boot song they got confirmation from a 19E rep.

OK, Trina, you have more experience of them than I do…would you say there’s a 50/50 chance of it being correct instead of a rumor? Because what I don’t see here is an attribution or a confirmation, from a 19E rep, or anybody…missing both of those doesn’t lend credibility. IMO, Of course.

  122. I know what I’m going to be doing tonight. Listening to a bunch of RS songs, and try to guess which one Cook (and all the contestants) will be singing.

  123. gee, listen to Ke$ha “sing” her blah blah blah? Can’t wait for that one.

    (I just don’t get it…ugh)

But David – yay. He’s a very rooted and talented singer/songwriter. Go David!

  124. Yes, others used different arrangements occasionally before Season 7, but after 7, it went from a theme-based necessity to a strategy for winning. Now, it seems like if you can’t put a different spin on a song, you aren’t a contender.

Isn’t that how all things evolve, though? New ideas, creative and ambitious minds experimenting and pushing the envelope(onward and upward).
I don’t think it’s a necessity, but it certainly has made it more interesting. Also, I think some of these contestants don’t really go on the show with the thought of winning; they just want a chance to get their name out there. The more versatile they are, the better their chances of some opportunity being presented to them.
I know David ‘s path to Idol was accidental, but I’m sure it crossed his mind that no matter where he placed, he had shown his talent to America and something could have come from that alone.
I have never been a fan of Rolling Stones, but if anyone can make me like one of their songs (I do like a few of them), you can bet it would be David!

  125. Hey, maybe DC’s doing a RS cover that is not amongst the 50 the contestants can choose from. Any ideas what that could be if so?

  126. Hmm, very late to the party but waiting impatiently to see what WTFCook will be singing Wednesday :)

As somebody who sought out and successfully purchased Analog Heart before it got pulled, let me just say that I only sought it out AFTER I was sold on Cook the artist.

Add me to that tally – I had never heard of it during the show and only heard the Analog Heart songs later. Love them – but they had absolutely nothing to do with me liking him on the show and I think that’s true for the vast majority of his fans.

And as far as Cook “ruining” the show by successfully pulling off “Rearrangement Idol,” any contestant is free to change the game at any time by successfully pulling off something else that everybody else wants to emulate in future seasons. It seems silly to me to fault somebody for being successful.

I guess it’s a compliment to him that he could make such a difference that he could change the whole show? Interesting that he could ruin the show for someone, though. And interesting that the notion is still out there that all he did was steal covers, considering that Billie Jean was clearly credited, and that several were his own arrangements. Oh well. Dead horse, I suppose.

I’m just excited to have him on my teevee, whatever he is singing. YAY!

  127. Cookcricket, I have no idea what’s really going on, I don’t think anyone else does either – except, David’s going to be singing ‘something’ on my TV again – and that’s a very good thing.

Now, if someone who does know would just tell Joey. ;)

  128. Orianthi is a really good guitar player for her age, her instrumental with Steve Vai on her album is amazing.

I don’t know what Cookie will do this week, but I’m 200% certain it will show up S9.

  129. Not a Stones fan so I can’t say that I am excited. I mean I get to see David and his band on TV again so that’s cool.

This just seems really random and last minute and sorry to say it. Half Assed.

According to Band member tweets this is the first day the guys will be rehearsing whatever song they chose. Monty was in Tulsa until today and Andy just mentions that they will be going into rehearsal for the show on Wens. So 2 days to get a Stones song together?

ETA: Not ready to announce DC as the savior of AI or Season 9. He’s just another performer, a good one, that can have a bad performance. See lackluster CBTM.

  130. According to Band member tweets this is the first day the guys will be rehearsing whatever song they chose. Monty was in Tulsa until today and Andy just mentions that they will be going into rehearsal for the show on Wens. So 2 days to get a Stones song together?

Maybe they had been working on a RS cover already or at some point to play on the road.
    How’s that for far-fetched possibilities?!

  131. I don’t know what Cookie will do this week, but I’m 200% certain it will show up S9.

Well, I can agree with this. BUT, if Crystal is up to par she’ll be pretty close in her showing, imo.

Andy just mentions that they will be going into rehearsal for the show on Wens. So 2 days to get a Stones song together?

They’ll be fine! If this is what they’re doing.

  132. They’re pro’s. They’ll be fine, as cookcricket said. For all we know, Dave and Neal have been itching to play some particular Stones’ song and they jumped at the chance to do it. Anyway, they all sound relaxed *and* excited, so if they are, I am. :) Hot dog! David Cook’s going to be on Idol!

  133. Ughh…I was hoping he would stay far away from idol and make this season way more enjoyable.

    Wait, Ke$ha’s a guy?

  134. cheese: If they make him lead this year’s top 12 in the Stones pointy pose song or something, I reserve my right to kill my television.

Oy, that’s an unwelcome thought. If David and the guys end up serving as the house band for the contestants’ group sing, I’ll… well, I like my television, so I’ll just shoot cheese’s.

I have to laugh at the idea that Cook ruined Idol. I mean, I get why that’s true for some, but for me, he made it watchable for the first time. Listening to the painful, pre-S7 warbling of a bunch of Maria/Whitney/Celine wannabees just to hear the occasional gem was NOT my idea of fun.

So 2 days to get a Stones song together?

Definitely doable. The songs are classics and these guys are pros. I just hope they get some time to work on whatever they pick so the performance is something other than a straight-up cover.

Or actually, I really hope the rumor’s wrong. The only reason I could see DC doing Stones on the same week the contestant are is to do it *with* them, because anything else would be showing them up (not because he’s intrinsically better, but because he’s more experienced, he has his own full band to work with and not just a single guitar + Bandzilla, etc.), and Idol needs to market the noobs.

So back to cheese’s hypothesis — ugh. DNW!

ETA: spritely, you’re right, they do sound relaxed and excited, and I can’t picture Andy or Cook being excited about a group performance, heh. So I will now chill. *chills*

ETA2: @nealfingtiemann I just missed the ice cream truck! This practice better be funfilled and action packed

*L* Yeah, they sound really stressed.

  135. Wait, Ke$ha’s a guy?

Oooh burn. I love you jammasta. Are you available? LOL

  136. I will be excited I am sure when the day comes. If this were any other artist who was asked to come on idol and do a Stones cover; I would have no problem with this. It’s just that Dave’s past is sooo tied to his performances on idol. If he kills it people will say he showed up Season 9 contestants. If he doesn’t than people will say even DC can’t have a DC moment. Maybe I’m thinking about it too hard. I wish he could just play Bar-ba-Sol. No ballads.

  137. Re: the lackluster CBTM performance (and it really was lackluster), IIRC that took place during a particularly bad time for David last year, so I cut him some slack on that one.

I do agree that one performance by him is hardly going to “save” the season. Just… no. Besides, I *like* this season, three billion guitar players and all. I like Crystal, Mike and Siobhan a lot and am really looking forward to what they’ll do on Tuesday.

  138. Season 7 was the first year they allowed contestants to play instruments. So of course a guitar-player era was sure to follow. Cook was the first so of course he gets the blame for “breaking” the show. When in reality it’s TPTB’s fault for letting instruments in the first place.

  139. I don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t have him on there – he’s a popular Idol. Saving the season? Well, I’m always happy to have him there but I don’t think the season needs to be saved, yet. There are a few of these kids that intrigue me so I’d watch it even if David wasn’t going to be on there. Just a big bonus for me that he is, I can’t get much deeper into it, heh.

  140. When in reality it’s TPTB’s fault for letting instruments in the first place.

Also, if they didn’t want the contestants with more performing experience on the show, all they had to do was say “no” to them at their auditon.

  141. I find it sooooo interesting that there is angst about Cook singing a cover, on a show that he won singing covers, as well as angst about him coming on the show that he won, and made him famous. I just don’t get it. As far as him changing up any of the RS songs, I seriously doubt it. Especially if any of the band members happen to be there? I dunno. I remember that the classis rock songs are the ones he messed with the least. He tweeked them only so slightly. I am thinking of HLTW, DWTMAT, among others. Pop, and country is where he changed it up.

Pop, and country is where he changed it up.

He did change up Baba O’Reilly, though. And didn’t he only use his guitar on something like 9 of 21 songs? In fact, I’m pretty sure both Brooke and Jason used their instruments way more than that.

  143. He changed Baba O’Reilly pretty drastically. But yeah, usually the straight rock ones he leaves alone, even on tour. I still hope they change up whatever RS song they’re performing though, because I find Stones songs to be meh. And after all, it’s all about me.

CBTM’s problem wasn’t so much a lackluster performance IMO (which I didn’t think it was. YMMV), but that the song itself isn’t that exciting. There’s only so much they could do with it, really.

Even live on tour I didn’t really think they did, or could do, much with CBTM. He just let the fans sing big chunks of it sometimes, lol. It’s just a boring song, honestly. One that I skipped over on the album from the start – figured it turned out to be a single, lol.

  145. Ok not feeling too great about this performance. Neal is tweeting that he hopes he doesn’t suck? Ok that is not like him. He usually talks about kickin ass and raging. Not sucking. Thanks Neal.

    I think he’s just joking. :)

nealfingtiemann For all those who don’t know, I’m playing on American idol on Wednesday. Watch it and I’ll try not to suck.

LOL, I don’t get it either. I’m not sure what the big deal is. I think it will be great for Cook and he will probably get a bounce for his album.

  149. I think Neal’s tweet is probably a sarcastic response to the usual fan meltdown and angst. These guys read the @replies to them way more than peeps think. Twitter is the devil ya know

  150. I actually took Neal’s tweet as positve lol. Usually he gets little to no camera time on these TV appearances(I think those camera dudes are all afraid of him) Sounds like he thinks he might be getting some on Wednesday, so….guitar solo? *adjusts pollyanna hat*

  151. I think that’s just Neal’s personality, and I don’t mean that I think he’s negative, he just strikes me as sarcastic and a bit cryptic(at least in his writing.)

  152. Yep Neal is a cryptic dude. I can’t figure out any of his lyrics.

    Like this

did you finally break into her?
and would you mind me if i were
as free as a bird now?
cause i will be with you tonight…

    cause i’m your passenger tonight
roll down your windows and come out despite
    well, i’m your passenger tonight
throw down the throttle and come out tonight

    Weird huh?

  153. Seems like Cook might be getting screwed this year. Are they putting him on this early in the season, when he has nothing to promote, because it’s the only time they could find to squeeze him in?

  154. Bon Jour, Cook angst! Comment allez-vous? Boy, the nostalgia is coming in huge waves now…I actually kind of love it. ((((hugs fandom))) Seriously, though, you guys, check this out. Ahem, and I quote…way back when the tweet first came down…

    OK, here are my guesses…

    1) New single! Unlikely, considering they *just* wrapped up the writing process, but I wouldn’t put it past him either. If not then I hope they’ll have him back later to premiere something new at the end of the season.

    2) Stones tribute…since I doubt the Stones themselves are performing, it might be nice to see a fully rocked out band cover of one of their tunes as a capper to Stones week. If that’s the case, I vote for It’s Only Rock and Roll…

    3) Charity single. Maybe something for ABC2, since the Race for Hope is coming up and he might want to plug that.

    4) New boot song, cuz the current one sucks and really hasn’t caught on..

    5) Just coming on to rock out cuz it’s, like rock week.

How about all of the above? Try this idea on for size…You Can’t Always Get What You Want cover with band, giving us new a Cook single to buy on iTunes (WITH THE ANTHEMIC, y’all). Not only that, but they make it a charity thing for ABC2 and plug Race for Hope, and allllso announce it’s the new boot song for top ten on because hello, how perfect a boot song would that be? And the cherry is that we FINALLY get to watch David rock out on the Idol stage with a real rock band in full effect. HIS rock band. Cuz I agree…the prob with CBTM is that it’s the single most boring song in their repertroire. Yeah, usually the boot song is performed top 2 results night, but David is doing it now because he’s coming back to preview his official single later on.

If you don’t dream big, what’s the use in dreamin….

Okay, seriously, though, SOMEBODY had to come and give the Stones a proper rock show tribute on Stones week. I mean, it’s the friggin Stones. If it’s not Mick and the boys, Cookie will do nicely. As long as they don’t f*ck it up. ;) And I refuse to believe he’ll be playing along with the pointy posers. La la la…I don’t hear you….

  155. I find the bridges in Neal’s songs intriguing. It could be this total bad-a** rock song, then all of a sudden there’s this beautiful bridge with layering music ( If I knew anything about music theory I probably would know a proper term for it )but it makes me want to rewind it a few times and listen to each part separately.

  156. Alright thanks for talking me off the ledge regarding Neal’s tweet. Geeze I am getting sucked into the angst undertow.

So I will go on record and hope that DC&TA do Gimmie Shelter. I saw someone on DCO suggest it. It’s moody and has a bit more range than most RS songs. It can build which is something DC&TA like to do. And the lyrics are very timely. And uhhh Anthemic. Durrrr. So if a contestant does it than forget I ever mentioned it.

ETA: Offside obsessed with Neal’s Vera; the live one with Cook’s harmony.

  157. Maybe MJ can set up a pool for us: Which Stones song will David Cook sing on Wed?

  158. I am looking forward to David Cook’s performance; however, Season 9 doesn’t really need saving at this point in time. I don’t need to hear any new artist’s music who’s appearance is to sell more albums. I have heard Orianthi perform, and she is good. I have no idea who the other person is. I’d rather see another Idol from any season who has an album out.

  159. it doesn’t look like David is sharing in the fan angst: thedavidcook CHATROULETTE REHEARSAL!!!!!!!

  161. Lollol yeah ‘very interesting’ is a good choice of words. Chatroulette is definitely, erm, an aquired taste?

  162. WTF is Chatroulette? Is it like Russian Roulette, but with twitter? *is clueless*

  163. Google says Chatroulette is a one-on-one web cam thing.

Jesus, you don’t think… with a hookup to England or the Bahamas or wherever Mick and Keith are right now… Naaaaaaah.

    Right?

@thedavidcook lesson learned. guys beating off don’t like our band.

  166. I’M SO CONFUSED! What happened?!

ETA: Okay, I checked on Twitter, and I figured out what Chatroulette is, and I’ve gathered what the guys beating off comment was referencing…

But I’m still confused. Was he kidding or did the guys actually go on chatroulette with their rehearsal? Did any brave fans find them on chatroulette?

  167. How about all of the above? Try this idea on for size…You Can’t Always Get What You Want cover with band, giving us new a Cook single to buy on iTunes (WITH THE ANTHEMIC, y’all). AI/19/RCA, hire this chick, RN!!!!! If DC sang this, I’d fall in love with him all over again! Hee!

If it’s not Mick and the boys, Cookie will do nicely. As long as they don’t f*ck it up. ;)

And that just cracked me up!!!

  168. Did he just twitter the words “beating off”? LMAO… You’re not a real rock star until guys beating off don’t dig your band. And thanks for the 411 on Chatroulette. I am not down with the webcam chat thingies. Too many weirdos (she says, as she angsts about Cook performing a cover on AI after. he’s. already. won. his. season. Like he could actually be voted off, um, what? THe planet now, maybe?)

ETA: Cookcricket, you know it’s my dream to be a 19 Evil minion. Inner circle, y’all, is all I’m saying. Course, if I ran 19, I’d also throw in a special guest musician playing with Cook’s band.

  169. Google says Chatroulette is a one on one web cam thing.

Jesus, you don’t think… with a hookup to England or the Bahamas or wherever Mick and Keith are right now… Naaaaaaah.

    Right?

Um, Chatroulette randomly connects you with other people on webcams who you talk to or disconnect with…

  170. I wasn’t familiar with chatroullette either. Thanks for the tutorial. Interesting. Heh

  171. Heh at least he got people laughing tonight and calmed some of the angst. He needs to do this every hour until Wednesday night lol

  172. It’s a random hookup? Then why rehearse using it? I mean, I’m all for unknowns getting a chance on AI, but that seems to be going a step too far.

Especially with what these unknowns seem to specialize in. LOL.

They are probably just bored. Chatroulette is a lot of penis, but it can be funny too with other people because some people go all out with costumes and stuff. There are websites out there with the best screen grabs from it.

  174. LMAO haha.

    Chatroulette from rehearsal. Check it.

Guess they’re having some fun at rehearsal!

  175. So is “AI Now” reliable and is the consensus out there that David’s doing a Rolling Stones cover? The other day, I was excited about David’s appearance but the fun of this whole thing has worn off for me. I don’t like American Idol games; never have, never will. :(

  176. I watched something on Nightline the other night about Chatroulette (may have been same night as Adam?) Anyway the Russian teen who invented it said you had a better success rate of actually making a connection if you have some gimmick to make folks pay attention to you. So if they were actually rehearsing while playing that might explain what they were up to.

  177. So if they were actually rehearsing while playing that might explain what they were up to.

Some horny dude out there knows what David is performing on Wednesday. We must find him! LOL.

  178. Chatroulette is a lot of penis, but it can be funny too with other people because some people go all out with costumes and stuff.

Chatroulette sounds like my typical Saturday night out.

    Bwaaahhhhh…..sorry.

ETA: MJ, LMAO. I’m guessing that would be one of your more, erm, memorable spoiler sources…

  179. Some horny dude out there knows what David is performing on Wednesday. We must find him! LOL.

LOL, I had the same thought – someone has the spoiler, now where is he?!

  180. Some horny dude out there knows what David is performing on Wednesday. We must find him! LOL.

    LMAO. Quote.of.the.year.

  181. So they set up their webcam and someone watched them, right? Their rehearsal was their gimmick? I’m glad they’re having fun, even if it’s stupid. lol!

ETA: okay, just read mj’s post, answered my question, thanks.

  182. How about all of the above? Try this idea on for size…You Can’t Always Get What You Want cover with band, giving us new a Cook single to buy on iTunes (WITH THE ANTHEMIC, y’all). In a just world this would so happen!

LMAO. How many minutes until Dave gets the phone call from Michelle: “um, Dave? Do I see “beating off” on your official twitter? I’m sure that’s a typo and you;ll be deleting that.”

  183. Pretty much cookcricket. Maybe the boys are hitting the bottle haha. Pfft I bet if they stayed on longer they would have found some other guy whacking off who was into them..

  184. @thedavidcook lesson learned. guys beating off don’t like our band.

This almost rivals “Hush cats” as the funniest Idol tweet ever.

  185. ^ Now if someone would only tweet about loud cats beating off on Chatroulette, now THAT would be something…

  186. Some horny dude out there knows what David is performing on Wednesday. We must find him! LOL.

OMG yes! I’m still laughing at all the tweet replies from the DC fans who followed him to chatroulette only to run back out screaming about washing their eyes, etc.

LMAO. How many minutes until Dave gets the phone call from Michelle: “um, Dave? Do I see “beating off” on your official twitter? I’m sure that’s a typo and you;ll be deleting that.”

Yeah… are they drunk-rehearsing or something? Will the phrase “guys beating off” stay on an American Idol’s twitter? DC does have some really young AI fans who may be confused. Hmmm. I understand if they take it off, but I kinda hope it stays. It’s some of the best tweeting he’s done, and that’s saying a lot cuz he’s tweeted some hilarities in the past…

Quick, someone retweet it to Jambajim before it goes poof so it makes it on the next tweet beat! (Is he still doing that?)

This almost rivals “Hush cats” as the funniest Idol tweet ever.

That reminds me, one of the funnier twitter responses I saw to DC was, “What if David Archuleta saw that?” Lol… I’m recalling memories of the pink panties from the Idol tour that DC lobbed at Archie, and poor Archie’s response…

  187. Some horny dude out there knows what David is performing on Wednesday. We must find him! LOL.

omg I am crying laughing. Okay, who’s going to take one (or, um, more) for the team?

Chatroulette is a lot of penis, but it can be funny too with other people because some people go all out with costumes and stuff.

Damn. I wish I had Adam’s number. I bet he’d do it. He’s a good sport and that sounds like just an ordinary Monday for him.

  188. @thedavidcook lesson learned. guys beating off don’t like our band.

Oh, so it’s Satisfaction then. Good to know.

  189. So funny, now GRO (one of Cook’s opening bands) tweeted that they’re going to go on Chatroulette and try to find him. LOL.

    GRO:

@thedavidcook OMG chatroulette.com just saw way too many weirdos. I’m going to try and find you -gi

  190. Oooh burn. I love you jammasta. Are you available? LOL

    Errr….. yeah? o_O

Anyway, I am strangely curious about this horny dude, and that is something I should probably never say again.

  191. Hahaha:

@jambajim hilarious misadventures of @thedavidcook exploring Chatroulette give new meaning to the term “Tweet Beat”

  192. Oh, so it’s Satisfaction then. Good to know.

Oh, now this would be an interesting way to drop a hint. LOL!

ETA: Oh jambajim!! hahahahaha. def. lol!

  193. LMAO that guy from RCA Dave Carlson tweeted this

@TheDaveCarlson: @thedavidcook If you go on ChatRoulette in the morning, you’re sure to get some breakfast sausage.

    I just snorted really loudly.

  194. @jambajim hilarious misadventures of @thedavidcook exploring Chatroulette give new meaning to the term “Tweet Beat”

Hee. I was sitting here trying to finish up some work and was dozing off until all the Chatroulette hilarity started. *Snort*

  195. I just snorted really loudly.

Apparently we had like synchronized snorting. Bwah.

  196. @jambajim hilarious misadventures of @thedavidcook exploring Chatroulette give new meaning to the term “Tweet Beat”

Btw, that was someone tweeting TO jambajim, not a tweet coming from Jim. Jim’s last tweet was an hour ago. He’s probably in bed, East coast ya know. And I should be too. Nite all. Twas funtimes in DC-land today.

  197. @TheDaveCarlson: @thedavidcook If you go on ChatRoulette in the morning, you’re sure to get some breakfast sausage.

Is that the RCA guy of the “head exploding, need a broom” quote? He’s a colorful guy.

And btw Keel you owe me a new keyboard. Mwahahah!

  198. GRO so i am dressed as a pokemon playing an accordion on chatroulette.com -gi

Lol – I wonder if he has any idea of what he’s started.

  199. Well if DC is doing a RS song, at least I know I will hear the Stones done well at least one time this week. I don’t like the Stones the same way I like The Beatles, so I won’t be quite as upset with what S9’s contestants do to them, but still, hearing a good version of a classic, will be nice. That is assuming that’s what they’re even doing.

Oh and I am firmly in the campt that there is a way to do CBTM and not make it suck. So that’s not his fault. I’m sure with better material, he’ll do better on the show.

And no matter what he does, see an increase in album sales, which is always nice.

Oh and I do think he’ll help the season, because I do think it needs all the help it can get.

  200. Holy crap. He really is playing the accordian. I’m laughing so hard I have a headache.

  201. GRO is love. <3 LMAO….

Dear random perv on Chatroulette who started it all,

Thanks ever so much for beating being a wanker.

    Love,

    The fandom :D

    P.S. How bout that spoiler?

  202. just checked my twitter and have no idea of what david is referring to. education via comments reading hence proceeds

  203. Couldn’t sleep. got up to find David Cook rehearsal hilarity & upcoming interview with Cookie! Insomnia has benefits.

  204. I can’t believe this thread balooned to 224 (well 225 now) comments. Most of them speculating on whether Cook will be appearing on Wednesday night, what he’ll be singing and finally what Twitterville (and Chatroulette) adventures he’ll be taking us on. Hilarious.

  205. How does a little “Jumpin Jack Flash” sound? Grain of salt and all that…

@idolsnow: BREAKING NEWS: IdolsNow reveals exclusively that DAVID COOK will perform “Jumpin' Jack Flash” on “American Idol” results show Wed night.
    15 minutes ago from web

  206. Looks like I missed all the fun last night with c/roullet and Idolsnow news! JJF? OK; I’m glad it’s an upbeat song rather than a ballad.
Question for twitter folks: What does the “&apos” signify? I see it all over people’s tweets and can’t figure it out.
    Is it Wed. yet?….

  207. Darn, I was hoping for a new single. I’m disappointed that he’s singing a cover, and that’s one of my least favorite Rolling Stones songs. OH well, it’s always good to see David Cook on tv. I’m sure he’ll be on Idol again when his single is ready. I wonder why this appearance even happened? I’ll just put aside my disappointment and enjoy it.

  208. I don’t understand something, though. Why are the other two guests
singing their own songs and David & band not? Is it because he has no new music out and they do?

  209. ^ Exactly. If you have new music, you perform it.

As weird as this sounds, it will probably be less confusing to the casual audience that he plays a cover instead of a song off DCTR. With an album song they might miss the messaging to look out for a new album and instead think he was releasing a new single off that album.

(A lot of people mistakenly thought Permanent and Declaration were singles when he played them once on TV.)

  210. I miss David Cook and am very happy he will be on Idol Wednesday.

  211. What does the “&apos” signify? I see it all over people’s tweets and can’t figure it out.

Offside, it’s apostrophe. Some browsers, Internet Explorer for instance, display an apostrophe as an entity reference instead of as a character….something to do with the type of HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) that it uses not being compatible. I don’t really know much more about it – but when your browser reads “&apos”, the poster typed an apostrophe. I think you can use &#39…although that may not display either. But if you know what it stands for, it may make it easier to just read past it. If it drives you crazy, try another browser?

Speaking of being driven crazy – one more day – I haven’t looked to see what the latest web rumor is for David’s performance tomorrow – I think I’m rumored out, and ready to just be happily surprised, whatever it is!
