Nigel Lythgoe tweets that the Top 13 are rehearsing a Michael Jackson group song choreographed by the SYTYCD husband/wife hip-hop team, Napoleon and Tabitha! Hip hip hooray!

I love the big cheesy group number. Looooove it. I just tweeted Nigel question, asking if the kids will be singing live tonight. THEY BETTER BE. I’ll update this post if he answers my question!

Paul McDonald tweets, “Just got doing some group rehearsal! Sweet dance moves are in the works haha.”

Another “sweet” photo, after the jump!

  1. I’ve always loved the cheesy group numbers too. It looks like they are incorporating more dance moves tonight. Should be fun! :)

  2. I would doubt that they are singing live. Trying to get 13 very different people to sing together an up-tempo number while dancing would most likely sound like crap. At least that’s why Crystal (I think) said that group numbers were pre-recorded.

  3. Casey has to be like a vampire ;) I mean, they aren’t suppose to show up in photographs are they? But then he couldn’t be filmed either so that blows that theory :(

    Okay…so where’s Casey?!

I don’t know, but he’s got to be there or somebody is standing in for him. I count at least parts of 13 heads in the 2nd pic.

  5. Casey never seems to be in these group shots. I wonder if he is still struggling with some illness and they are lightening the schedule for him to recover? Or maybe he just happens to be staying just out of camera range.

  6. OOOO Cheesy goodness.

It looks like Naima is wearing the flag of some country: Spain perhaps? I love Naima but the colors of her dress and its drape do like a flag.

  7. Call me a cheesehead cause I love the group numbers! I hope they aren’t like last year’s. I know they have taped the chorus in the past but the complete taped thing was just not quite as satifiying a cheese fest. Boo that.

  8. More cheese than an Extra Cheesy Pizza and Stefano in basketball shorts, Naima draped in an European flag, Ashton in print leggings, and Paul dressing simply in a long sleeve tee….wow..such cheese and fashion flare ups, gotta love it.

  9. Someone is standing in for him. Probably the person in the middle. None of those heads belonging to the hidden faces have hair curly enough to be Casey.

  10. Naima draped in an European flag

Since her mother, jazz singer Adekola Adedapo, was a Black Power activist in her youth, I strongly suspect that’s an African flag she’s wearing. Quite a few flags of African nations use that color scheme.

Yes, the person standing in the far right of the first picture is not a contestant, and I think they are standing next to Thia in the middle of the group in the second picture. He wasn’t on set for the ford music video either. Whatever put him in the hospital must still be effecting him.

  12. Jeebus. I’ve so missed the group sings and the very first one has to be Michael Jackson. Ugh.

I’ll be watching with the mute on.

  13. The colors red, green and yellow are associated with Rastafarians. You’ll see a lot of Bob Marley posters, reggae posters and such sporting those colors. Even though Jamaica’s colors are yellow, green and BLACK, the red/green/yellow combo is highly associated with the country.

  14. I love the group songs…one of the highlights of Idol for me. Don’t know why..they are cheesy, but good entertainment. Napoleon and Tabitha are top-notch choreographers. This could be interesting.

Now that makes sense. I did not know that so her choice would make a great deal of sense..cool.

  16. Nappy Tabs >>> Mandy Moore, who used to choreo the group sings as I recall. Fun times! Woo! o/ <<pointy pose

I kept looking at that last contestant in the first picture and couldn’t figure out who it was. I thought I was losing it(well, I probably still am, but at least not in the aspect of what contestant I was forgetting)because I couldn’t place the person.

Interesting nonetheless. Hope Casey is alright.

  18. Joe at Joes Place just tweeted that Casey will be M.I.A. for the results show tonight

  19. Poor Casey. :-( What time is the show on tonight?

I couldn’t stand it any longer and had to google to find out who coined the term “pointy pose.” Answer here.

Another reader asked about the meaning of my phrase “Pointy Pose”. Actually, that’s not my phrase. I began my online “Idol” life at the Televisionwithoutpity.com AI forums. Some clever person coined the phrase “Pointy Pose” to describe the pose struck at the end of group numbers. The contestant, with a big cheesy grin (or sometimes an eyeroll–those are the best) stop and raise one or both arms–fingers pointing heavenward. (right) thanks so much annie for the photo!. I snatched that phrase and use it as shorthand to refer to the group numbers–that have been sadly few and far between the last couple of seasons.

I think it would be awesome if a group showed up at a results show wearing those cheeseheads they sell at Packers games.

  20. Love, love, love the Group numbers! This seems like a good opportunity for Naima to meet Napoleon and Tabitha! YAY! I sincerely want to see that young lady appear on So You Think You Can Dance!

I hope Casey can overcome the reoccurence of his illness. Poor guy. Glad he did get to perform last night!
