Monday Morning Mediabase Update: Sep 26-Oct 2

Two milestones this week – both on Pop and both from former X-Factor Contestants.

Niall Horan splashed onto the scene on Thursday night when he released his solo debut single “This Town”. Niall auditioned as a solo artist for X-Factor back in 2010 (when he was just 16) and Katy Perry cast the deciding vote to let him get past the audition phase. While doing the “Hollywood” rounds of the show, he was first cut before being called on stage with four other guys and told to form a band. Simon himself mentored the group and they quickly gelled to become One Direction. And One Direction quickly became a hit releasing 4 number one albums (and one number 2), dropping several successful singles and being the number one touring group for 2 or 3 years. About a year ago, the group which was now down to four members, announced that they were taking a hiatus. Everyone thought Harry would be the loan success, but Zayn has already released a number one single. Now it’s Niall’s turn. Never the most featured singer, though the one who did regularly play instruments. “This Town” debuts at 35 – top 40 on Pop.

Fifth Harmony was another band that was formed on X-Factor, but the US version. They have developed a strong presence on social media and this album has seen their singles accepted by radio to become hits. The third track off of their second album debuts in the top 50 – “That’s My Girl”.

Shawn Mendes recently turned 18 and gets to celebrate his second number one album on the BB200 this week. Shawn is a Vine star who initially struggled for spins on radio, but he has gained acceptance there. This week is his best sales week ever. Only 5 other artists have achieved 2 number ones by 18: Justin Bieber (17), Miley Cyrus (14), Hilary Duff (17) and LeAnn Rimes (15). Luke Bryan achieves his 8th top 10 album in a row since 2011 (he certainly keeps busy in the studio) and his 9th overall.
