Monday Morning Mediabase Update: Nov 24-30

Five Golden Milestones! 4 on Mainstream Formats. 3 From the Winners. Two from the UK. And a Country Hit from a Female Star.

Country has been a chilly format for the Country artists, but Carrie is one of the few women who can still top charts in that format. Her “Something in the Water” is anchoring her soon to arrive greatest hits album (due December 9th and to stuff many a stocking) and it has achieved top 10. It’s not going to the top before Christmas, but has a fighting chance in the new year.

Pop has two milestones, both from the X-Factor UK franchise. One Direction featured “Night Changes” on the AMAs and it is their second single from their fourth album. “Steal My Girl” wasn’t really getting the job done, but “Night Changes” appears to be jogging easily up the chart. It skipped the top 40 heading straight to top 30. Ella Henderson finished 9th on the show, but is doing better in the US than many X-Factor winners. Her debut single “Ghosts” went top 30 in Pop this week.

Over on AC, we have the Christmas songs. This format goes to the Holiday songs earlier than anybody else (even CAC tends to wait a while). Studies have shown that the first AC channel to go Christmas tends to keep the Christmas song fans loyal for the season. Expect them to start before Halloween soon. As a Christmas song fan, I apologize to the rest of you. But, this is all good news to two of our acts. Kelly Clarkson’s titular single from her last year’s Christmas Album “Wrapped in Red” goes top 10 on AC. I thought they released this last year and we would soon see it go recurrent, but it was not released as the album’s second single until November of this year. Smart play, RCA. This song will battle with Idina’s for top Christam single on the radio. Pentatonix meanwhile is having the top Holiday album and their titular “That’s Christmas to Me” is charging up the charts. It has moved into the top 20 from top 40 last week.
