Monday Morning Mediabase Update: Nov-12-18

Christmas is coming, AC’s going flat. Please put a dollar in the iTunes hat. If you haven’t got a dollar, 69 cents will do. If you haven’t got 69 cents, neither do most reality show contes-es-tants. Wait! That doesn’t scan at all even if it is true.

As we edge into late November, that means one thing – the arrival of Idol Christmas songs on the radio. This year promises not to disappoint and even The Voice is chipping in (and this time, it isn’t a judge. Yes, Virgina, there really is a Santa Claus). We also have some impressive milestones on Pop, total domination of the Triple A chart, a racer on the CAC chart and two debuts on Country. And to top it all off, it’s Black Friday week, the third biggest sales week of the year and the biggest year for dropping albums. To quote one of my favourite Christmas movies, Yippee-ki-yay…

Okay, let’s start off with those Christmas songs draining the AC chart. Rod Stewart has the pole position for Christmas Songs (I just watched “Love Actually” where some washed up party-boy singer goes for the top of British Christmas Song Chart against a boy band named “Blue”. So, every time I think of Rod Stewart’s Christmas album, I think of Billy Mack. As he tells the UK X-Factor hosts Ant and Dec “Hiya kids. Here is an important message from your Uncle Bill. Don’t buy drugs. Become a pop star, and they give you them for free!”), but the reality show contestants are jockeying for position. Jordin Sparks “Do You Hear What I Hear?” (incidentally, Carrie Underwood had success with that song on the radio back in 2008) debuts on the AC chart at top 30. Chris Mann, 4th on the spring version of “The Voice” debuts at 41st with “O Come All You Faithful”.

Over on Pop, our latest Idol winner, Phil Phillips leads the charge. This week, the week his album debuts, his coronation song “Home” slips into the top 15 on Pop. It continues to top the AAA chart for the second week (and the AAA listeners tend to be buyers). Cher Lloyd moves into the top 30 on Pop with her latest single “Oath” and Carly Rae Jepsen, fresh of her Best New Artist award at the AMAs return to top 40 on Pop with “This Kiss”.

Country sees debuts from Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood (who won the AMA for best Country album last night). Kelly’s “Don’t Rush” featuring Vince Gill and Carrie’s third single from “Blown Away” (called “Two Black Cadillacs”) both appear in the top 50.

Finally, Colton Dixon has the biggest bullet on CAC as his “You Are” explodes into the top 30 on that chart.

“So if you really love Christmas, C’mon and let it snow”.
