Monday Morning Mediabase Update: Jul 16-22

This week, the Idol clones take center stage on the Mediabase report.

Let’s start with the Grand-daddy clone of them all, X-Factor UK. Simon Cowell is showing ninja like skills breaking his British acts in the US this year. Cher Lloyd, who came in 4th after several rule changes to get her there, has a solid hit on her hands. We can see why Simon was willing to turn the manipulation up to 11 for this girl because her new single is rocketing up the charts. “Want U Back” went top 15 on Pop (sitting just outside top 10) and top 50 on HAC. The song is set to go for adds on Rhythmic this week featuring a new rap break by Snoop Dogg (sorry, Astro, you just didn’t get the job done). Is this Snoop Dogg’s career now? He puts down his reefer for a few minutes to add some lyrics to the latest ingenue’s song? Well, it pays the bills.

One Direction, who finished one spot ahead of Cher in Season 7, are working their second single. “One Thing” has gone top 40 on HAC. They are currently charting two songs in the top 40 in that format.

Finally, Olly Murs, a second place finisher from the season before, has a top 40 Pop hit with “Heart Skips a Beat”

Over here with the US franchise of X-Factor, Simon isn’t having quite as much luck. No only has he had to replace Astro on Cher’s new song, but we are still waiting to hear debut singles from the winner and runner-up from the show’s first season. With the show starting up again in the near future, surely those lead-off singles must be ready soon. In any event, 3rd place finisher Chris Rene is holding down the fort with his second single. “Trouble” goes top 50 on Pop.

The other big Idol clone is The Voice. As Carson Daly told Michael Slezak last week, this show isn’t too concerned about the long term success of their contestants and it shows. After two seasons, the Voice contestants have made barely a ripple on the music scene. Still, I was remiss in not noting last week that Vicci Martinez achieved top 50 on HAC with “Come Along” featuring her mentor/judge/head-cat-in-charge, Cee Lo Green.

For the Idols, Kelly Clarkson continues to top the AC chart with her second single from her fifth album, “Stronger”. Her third single “Dark Side” went top 30 in that format this week. The song is now top 30 in 3 formats.

Carrie Underwood also has a top 30 song with the second single and title track from “Blown Away” (4th studio album) reaching that level on Country.

Mandisa, 9th place finisher from Season 5, goes top 20 on CAC with “Good Morning”.

Carly Rae Jepsen from the Canadian franchise of the song had her song with Owl City, “Good Time” reach top 30 on HAC. Her debut single “Call Me Maybe” continues to be in the top 10 of 3 formats (top 20 of 4 formats).
