Monday Morning Mediabase Update: Feb 2-8

Just one milestone this week on the Mediabase Monday Morning Report – lots of songs moving up.

Colton Dixon, Mr. 7-11 (7th on the 11th season of Idol) has carved out a successful career for himself in the Christian Music scene. His songs tend to do better on the HAC equivalent Christian charts, but Mediabase doesn’t report those. He still has success on the larger CAC chart and his latest single to debut on the chart is “Let Them See You”. Whats interesting is that “Let Them See You” does not appear to be a released single, but it is also from his debut album “The Messenger” (not his most recent album). Anybody know why this single is suddenly gaining some traction?

Yesterday was the Grammys and it is always interesting to see who the “winners of the Grammys”. It’s not always the winner of the awards that rises to the top or gets the most buzz. Looking at the top of iTunes this morning, Madonna holds the top 3 spots. Her performance certainly reminded people she has new music. Fourth is owned by a track from the upcoming “Shades of Grey” movie – I suspect this film might not flop as badly as many predict. It’s certainly moving some downloads. Fifth goes to Ed Sheeran’s already popular “Thinking Out Loud” that was performed with Herbie Hancock and John Mayer last night – the song actually held the number one song until after midnight when the four songs above it were released.

Billboard is also reporting that Ed had the most Shazammed moment of the entire telecast during his collaboration with ELO (his “Thinking Out Loud” was third). What is Shazam? Well, it’s not just the thing Captain Marvel shouts anymore – it is an app to figure out the name, title, etc of a song you heard, but didn’t recognize (it has been around for while). And, then it gives you the option to Buy the song. Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” was the song Grammy Viewer’s decided to buy the most followed by Hozier’s “Take Me to Church”. Ed and Hozier may have gotten hosed at the Grammy’s, but they can still call it a successful night.
