Monday Morning Mediabase Update: Aug 29-Sep 4

We bring you four milestones this Labour Day Weekend.

Starting us out is Idol Winner Fantasia on UAC. “Sleeping with the One I Love” is her second single (if you don’t count her attempt to go Country with one single) from her fifth studio album. The song hit top 15 on UAC this week. Her first single made it to top 10 in the format and it is a little worrying that this song has lost its bullet – but bullets can be recovered on UAC unlike some formats.

Next up is two milestones on UAC. Danny Gokey’s latest single (in anticipation of his new album) has risen to top 40 on CAC (it’s name is “Rise”). Meanwhile, Lauren Daigle, who blocked his last attempt at topping the chart, has a new single out with “Come Alive (Dry Bones)” which debuted in the top 50 of that chart. Danny came in 3rd on Season 8 of Idol while Lauren Daigle was an Idol auditioner.

Now, we switch gears to The Voice. RaeLynn was eliminated in the quarter finals of Season 2 of the show, but has been one of the shows more successful contestant. Her latest single has gone top 50 on Country. I’m sure the song, “love Triangle”, is a favourite of television show writers who can’t seem to get enough of the trope to trip up ships for another season.

Barbra Streisand is a living legend. She is largely reclusive and hasn’t had a hit song in dog years, but her devoted fans continue to flock to any concert she gives or album she drops. “Encore: Movie Partners Sing Broadway” is her latest album to hit the top of the BB200 chart (in an era where streaming has played havoc with that chart and more traditional album sellers). This becomes her 11th number one extending her record of having the most number of top albums for a female artist and tying Bruce Springsteen for third amongst all acts (The Beatles have 19 and Jay Z has 13). The album features duets with a number of people who probably can’t meet her vocal abilities (really – most of the world) including Melissa McCarthy and Daisy Ridley. Interestingly, the album has the highest sales week for physical albums in 2016 at 126K. That’s why you see fewer places selling CDs.

The top three albums account for 100K albums each. The first time new releases have pushed more than 100K (and that is SPS) since November of 2015.
