Monday Morning Mediabase Update – Aug 23-29

There is a plethora of new songs debuting on charts this week, so let’s start with a rundown of all this new music. We must first start with Carrie Underwood who has two songs debuting on charts. Her new single “Mama’s Song”, which goes for adds on Sept 13, had already gone top 50 on the Country chart. Meanwhile, her prior single (prior to her latest single “Undo It”), “Temporary Home” went top 50 on CAC. Also making an appearance on the Country chart is Josh Gracin from season 2. His “Cover Girl” is at 51 (for some reason, the chart went up to 51 this week).

Making waves over on UAC is Fantasia. Her second single (no add date, yet) from her third album (released this week) has already gone top 50. That gives her two songs in the top 50 in that format.

Also from his third album, David Archuleta’s debut single “Something ‘Bout Love” has gone top 50 on Pop. Hedley also achieved a top 50, this time on HAC, with their song “Perfect”. Will this song finally break them into the US market?

The only existing song to reach a milestone this week is Daughtry’s “September” on AC which reached top 30. That gives them two songs in the top 30 on AC.

Kellie Pickler went recurrent on Country and Kris Allen on CAC. Kelly Clarkson fell off the AC chart.

nice increase in AI in both formats!

  2. Thanks for the updates, CindyM! Great news from Australia :). As much as I’m enjoying following Adam’s tour here in the States, I have to admit that I’m really looking forward to sharing it with the rest of the world.

Re the numbers: I don’t know much about bullets, etc., but that AI number looks really impressive for pop and keeps on growing. I think it means “Audience Impression” – can someone give me a quick explanation? TIA!

  3. Nice move for Danny’s IWNSGB from #37 to #33 on the country chart. This song seems to be moving a little faster than his debut.

    Today’s mediabase update:

    33 38 33 DANNY GOKEY I Will Not Say Goodb… 19/RCA 735 668 67 2029

  4. Here’s the definition from wiki for AI:

    Audience Impression (AI)

An audience impression is a measure of how large an audience a song reaches, and is usually expressed in millions of people. For example, one play by a New York radio station might be rated as a certain number of million impressions, meaning that this is a reasonable if necessarily inexact estimate of the number of people who heard it.

So, it’s based on the estimated size of a stations listening audience at the time the song is played. If you have a lot of spins, but low AI, it’s likely that smaller stations are playing, or the times you are being played has a much smaller audience, for example overnight.

Bullet is easy, it’s just math. It’s the number of spins for this 7-day period versus the last 7 day period. The increase or decrease in bullet number is the amount of the change.

I agree Danny has gotten a nice move on the chart. This song is moving faster than MBD did.

Allaccess has the update now with the audience impression also included:

    38 33 DANNY GOKEY I Will Not Say Goodbye 735 668 67 3.727

  6. Danny just got an add (an auto add) from a radio station in Lancaster.

  7. Nice to see September at 45 even before the official adds date but it’s tough for this kind of song to do well in that format these days. Too bad because it’s really a terrific song.

It’ll be interesting see how Pop radio responds to it now that Bruno Mars and Taio Cruz are dominating Top 40. Bruno Mars is the type of artist that Idol should be finding but for some reason just doesn’t.

  8. CindyM – thanks for the explanation of AI. Wow – now I’m even more impressed! Still haven’t heard IIHY on any stations in the Dallas area, but every week I cross my fingers for an add. Really glad that he’s obviously getting airplay in other large markets.

  9. Danny’s IWNSGB also got an unmonitored add in Wheeling , WV – 2 adds so far.

  10. I think that Andrew Garcia could have been like Bruno Mars, had he not ended up doing poorly on the show. He had a nice amount of buzz going into the season, a big youtube following (one of the biggest reasons why he lasted as long as he did).

He gave a good audition, played guitar, it seemed like he was going to be able to put his own twist on different songs. But things went downhill for him. I think if Andrew had done better, he might could have seen some success like Bruno has had.

  11. Happy to see Danny’s song make nice movement up- closer to top 30.

I’m sure Luke Bryan and Carrie will pass him so it will be slow growing this next week. But in its 8th week, it is moving up faster than his first single.

I hope they will show a little clip of him on the ABC airing of the CMA FEST, shown on Sept. 1. My local TV guide has a picture of him singing there under highlights section, so I hope that is significant.

Boo on Kellie going recurrent. I wonder if so many heavy hitters wouldn’t have released songs this past month if she could have stayed in the top 30 and gained momentum? I’m sure Taylor Swift and Sugarland will also be coming up the next two months with another single.

  12. No Alison this week?

Allison is still in the 200 songs chart on Pop, but her song has fallen down the charts by a lot. Here’s the update for her for today:

    97 132 ALLISON IRAHETA Don’t Waste The Pretty 26 57 -31 0.048

I hope they will show a little clip of him on the ABC airing of the CMA FEST, shown on Sept. 1. My local TV guide has a picture of him singing there under highlights section, so I hope that is significant.

I hope Danny gets airtime on the CMA fest tv special as well, even if he’s just shown briefly.

Not Bruno Mars ( Mars has a MUCH better singing voice), but Mike Posner. I thought they sounded alike since day one- and actually Alex Lambert has that same cool vibe to his voice. Imagine Mike Posner on AI- he would have tanked too.

jpfan- they had a contestant that never made it to the final rounds that could have been their “Bruno Mars” . I was so excited when I caught theis video on youtube and someone said he tried out for AI last year, but then he never made it :(

  14. Allison is still in the 200 songs chart on Pop, but her song has fallen down the charts by a lot. Here’s the update for her for today:

    97 132 ALLISON IRAHETA Don’t Waste The Pretty 26 57 -31 0.048

:S thanks for the info… Allison is a big question mark for me… I certanly remember that Avril Lavigne, the artist that I think we should compere Allison right now, at my time was big with all the girls and boys…

  15. Not Bruno Mars ( Mars has a MUCH better singing voice), but Mike Posner. I thought they sounded alike since day one- and actually Alex Lambert has that same cool vibe to his voice. Imagine Mike Posner on AI- he would have tanked too.

I do see similarties between Andrew and Mike. And I think that Bruno does have a better singing voice than Andrew and Mike do.

The only performance I ended up liking of Andrew’s on AI was his audition of “Sunday Morning.” I didn’t even like “Straight Up” that much. I think that Andrew started out with the potential to do well on the show, but then ended up tanking. Not only did he end up with song choices that weren’t good for him, it got to the point to where he just didn’t sound good, IMO.

I liked Alex on the show and ended up liking him more than Andrew. And I thought that he could have went much further in the competition had his nerves hadn’t gotten in the way.

:S thanks for the info… Allison is a big question mark for me… I certanly remember that Avril Lavigne, the artist that I think we should compere Allison right now, at my time was big with all the girls and boys…

I thought that Allison did sound like Avril in her first single “Friday I”ll Be Over You.” That song also reminded me of a song from the 80’s, (maybe that was one of the reasons it didn’t do well.)

I didn’t like her other two singles, “Scars” and “Don’t Waste The Pretty”. I didn’t really care for either of tv performances of those songs on AI and SYTYCD.

I don’t think that any of the songs Jive has released to radio for her have been very good. (I thought that FIBOY was the best of the three).

I haven’t heard any of her other songs, so maybe she does have a song on her album that might could do at least okay on radio.

  19. Great that there are three idols still in the top 10 on AC, Chris, Adam & Kris… Kris at # 8 with LLWD even gained spins from last week. In September, LLWD will have been out for a year… not bad for the little song.

Wow – amazing when this was a song many thought of as dead on arrival.

  20. hope little David’s SBL keeps going in the right direction although it’s taking a looong time to catch on.
i’m like a worried mother when it comes to him.

  21. Congrats to all the Idols on the charts. I’m especially interested in seeing how SBL and September do now that they are in the Top 50 in Pop. Personally, I think that SBL is more suited to that format, but you can never count out Chris Daughtry when it comes to getting radio play (and in turn, big radio hits)

The AC chart is just full of people connected to Idol, isn’t it? Anyone know how many weeks Daughtry has been in the AC Top 40 with Life After You? I’ve been tracking the S8 people, and I have LLWD at 33 weeks and WWFM at 27 weeks, respectively, in the AC Top 40.

Excited to see that The Truth has seemingly regained some momentum, not only on the Hot AC chart, but on the Pop chart as well. (I still don’t expect it to even break the Top 50 on Pop, but it is interesting that it moved from 62 to 58 and is gaining in spins and AI again)

  22. Danny’s IWNSGB got another monitored add from Dial Global Hot Country.

  23. Also, as to Allison, I wonder what would have happened if Jive had released D for Dangerous as a single? Adam and Kris have both said that that is their favorite song on her album — and I think that both of those guys have very good instincts.

  24. indeed good numbers for Kris this week. LLWD going up? he he

it’s not big number but i’m very pleased to see an increase for Kris’s album on Itunes

  25. An addition to springboard’s AC list:

    Jim Brickman f/ Matt Giraud
    24 23 JIM BRICKMAN Thank You 106 88 18 23 4.2 3.5 +0.7

Also, I love Kris and don’t want this comment to sound negative, but I have been watching the AC chart daily the past 3 weeks. Songs #9 (Katy Perry) and #10 (John Mayer) are closing in on LLWD on the AC chart, and I expect John Mayer, who is moving up the fastest, to bump Kris out of his #8 slot in the next week, and Katy Perry to pass Kris too. In fact, Kris was #9 for a day this week. What is interesting is that I think Kris will stay in the Top 10 for at least another couple weeks, and either get removed for going recurrent or slowly get passed by Colbie Calliat.

  26. Still haven’t heard IIHY on any stations in the Dallas area, but every week I cross my fingers for an add.

Try KLIF, they added last week and have been spinning. I’m not holding my breath for the CC Dallas station, but it would be a nice add.

She’s giving us all a needed break until her new album comes out, with probably at least fourteen songs, so she can drop two new songs every month.

When her next album drops, it will be the second part of her plan for World Dominance on the Charts. She easily will sale at least a couple of million her first week in the States.

Frankly, I’m over GaGa and her never ending ego. Plus her, “How can I top myself now” with the crazy outfits is so last year with her. Of course, she will still sell alot.

I’m not ready for a new album from Adam. I’m still in love with FYE and I’m a little skeered the new one won’t live up to it.

Is he getting any radio adds this week? I really want a Sleepwalker single. If they are smart, they’ll release it and maybe keep Adam’s album in the BB200 for the holidays. He could see a nice bump that way.

  32. Good updates for IIHY, TT and September :D. I hope it will continue like this and that all the idols songs will have good updates.

IIHY got HAC adds in Detroit(market #11- great add) and Tyler, TX.

  33. IIHY only has 2 add’s so far both HAC one if Detroit though nice one

  35. Awesome! I didn’t know they added IIHY (didn’t listen to KLIF before, but NOW I do :) !)

  36. Nice numbers for Fantasia. She’s right on Katy Perry’s heels:

    NOW IN: 54.98%
lw tw artist: album – label power index
    — 1 KATY PERRY: TEENAGE DREAM – CAPITOL/EMI 106,903
    — 2 FANTASIA: BACK TO ME – J RECORDS/RMG 87,127
    1 3 EMINEM: RECOVERY – SHADY/AFTERMATH/INT 53,443
    47 42 CARRIE UNDERWOOD: PLAY ON – 19/ARISTA NASHVILLE 3,276

  37. That’s some great numbers for Fantasia, hopefully she will have at least 150,000 albums sales for the past week.

  38. HDD is hard to figure out. I think predictions were for 200K for Katy and 120K for Fantasia. It would be nice if Fantasia sold more than 133K this week because those were the opening week figures of her last ablum. The law of diminishing returns is brutal for Idols so it would be nice to see at least one Idol break the curse even if just for a week.

  39. Wow, incredible for Fantasia, she was really all over the place last weeks, kudos to her management.

And is Usher debut week too? doesn’t look good for Big Usher if this is his debut week.

  40. Congrats to Fantasia; nice to see an “older” Idol kick out some sales!

Probably old hat to Adam’s fans who know he has been marketed overseas but I got a kick out of this station playing Danny today:

Hot Country FM – 104.2 FM
Playing: Danny Gokey – I Will Not Say Goodbye
    Location: Dublin, Ireland
    Genres: Country Irish

Who knows where they play Country, lol :D

  41. IIHY Adds HAC – 5 (2 unmonitored)

KTYL-FM Pub 3 Hot AC Tyler, TX 19/RMG GAP Broadcasting LLC 145
WBWZ-FM Act 0 Hot AC Poughkeepsie 19/RMG Clear Channel Comm 165

WIKZ-FM Act 0 Hot AC Chambersburg, PA 19/RMG ML Broadcasting 166

  42. It would be nice if Fantasia ends up beating the first week sales from her last album.

I got a kick out of this station playing Danny today:

Playing: Danny Gokey – I Will Not Say Goodbye

This Adam fan takes nothing for grated and any showing of an overseas radio station playing Adam is great news…..Danny fans should be elated that other countries are playing him on their Radio stations. That is always good and I really don’t think gets ever old. I am happy for Danny-WooHoo

Oh and I would say Country has to be significant enough in Ireland for it to warrant its own genre category there so that make it even a bigger deal IMHO :-)

  44. This Adam fan takes nothing for grated and any showing of an overseas radio station playing Adam is great news…..Danny fans should be elated that other countries are playing him on their Radio stations. That is always good and I really don’t think gets ever old. I am happy for Danny-WooHoo

Being a “Gokebert” fan myself (I love Adam and Danny), it always warms my heart to see your posts that are always so supportive of Danny and his career.

That’s so cool that IWNSGB was playing in Ireland and Danny is being recognized by other countries. I’m also thrilled about it moving to #33. It’s moving up faster than MBD did. I think Danny’s name is beginning to catch on outside his Idol fanbase.

It’s cool to see Fantasia doing well on the charts too.

  45. It’s def not Usher’s debut week. His album has been out for awhile and seems to have done very well. Fantasia being an “older” idol is funny because I think she’s only 26 years old which makes her younger than Adam and Danny.

  46. According to Idolsnow on Twitter, Danny’s single climbed up the Billboard chart two spots and is now #33 on the Billboard Country songs chart. (In addition to being #33 on mediabase). I am glad to see Danny’s song moving up on both the Billboard and Mediabase charts.

  47. That’s so cool that IWNSGB was playing in Ireland and Danny is being recognized by other countries.

I had saw that Danny’s music is also getting played on a Country radio station from the Grand Cayman Islands.

  48. I absolutley love Hedley and the song Perfect. They have many good songs and deserve to break into the US market. I too hope this is the song!

It’s def not Usher’s debut week. His album has been out for awhile and seems to have done very well. Fantasia being an “older” idol is funny because I think she’s only 26 years old which makes her younger than Adam and Danny.

Sorry, but your wrong I believe. Usher released Versus last week, August 24th. It’s a Lady Gaga Fame/Fame Monster situation. Here’s the description from Amazon:

With the phenomenal success of the #1 album Raymond V. Raymond and #1 singles Hey Daddy (Daddy s Home) , OMG featuring WILL.I.AM . Lil Freak featuring Nicki Minaj and There Goes My Baby Usher keeps the hits coming with a 9 track release of new music title Versus. Leading with smash DJ Got Us Fallin In Love produced by Max Martin and Hot Tottie produced by Powlow the Don, the bonus release brings a fresh element to Raymond V. Raymond story highlighted by new hits!

In addition to the 9 song disc, a new configuration, Raymond V. Raymond (Deluxe Edition) features the original Raymond V. Raymond release bundle with Versus in a two brilliant jewelcase.

Here is a tweet from Usher regarding the release:

  50. I didn’t realize Usher was putting out Versus and a deluxe version of RvR. Here are his HDD numbers so far:

    — 4 USHER: VERSUS – LAFACE/JLG 29,317
    30 22 USHER: RAYMOND VS. RAYMOND – LAFACE/JLG 6,575

I heard Hot Tottie on the radio yesterday and it sounds like another big hit. Considering Usher is also making $ off Justin Bieber, he’s having a very good comeback.
