Monday Morning Mediabase Update – Dec 20-26

The Glee team has had some tremendous success with their Christmas CD. I will be stunned if there is not another released next year. There are a million Christmas songs for them to mine and nobody minds a cover of one of them. This week, their big song is Wham!’s “Last Christmas” (their song dudes are no doubt trying to find yet another 80s Christmas ditty for 2011). This song hit milestones on three different formats. Glee had their first number 1 radio hit on AC with this song while reaching top 50 on both HAC and Pop (it was the top current Christmas song on Pop). Their “We Need A Little Christmas” from the musical Mame hit top 30 on AC and their “Deck the Rooftops” made top 50.

Katharine also had her greatest success to date on radio with “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” which reached top 5 on AC. Carrie Underwood’s “Mama’s Song” looks stalled, but we can’t count this week since there isn’t a song in the Top 30 of country that didn’t lose its bullets. To make up for it though, her “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” went in to the top 50 on that format.

Over on CAC, the big Christmas numbers were racked up by Mandisa. Her “Little Drummer Boy” reached top 40 and her “Angels We Have Heard on High” reached top 50.

Next week, we’ll see a massive drop down of Christmas songs, but don’t expect the bullets for the regular songs to return just yet. The countdown shows will begin in earnest gobbling up those spins.
