Michael’s latest gig? He’s guest appearing on the new album from 80’s schmaltz-rockers, Air Supply. The new album, Mumbo Jumbo, set to be released May 4, features Michael on a cut called “Hold On”.

Update:  Listen to “Hold On” below (It’s a duet. OMG. The song is crap, and their voices sound horrible together. Blech)

Hold On

For those of you too young to remember (or have brain-bleached them out of your mind), Air Supply was the ultimate soft-rock band of the late 70’s and early 80’s. Treacly love ballads, such as “All Out Of Love”, Love or Nothing at All” and “Making Love Out of Nothing At All” were huge hits back in the day.

They were popular, but generally, I could not switch the dial fast enough when one of the band’s pasteurized processed cheese-fests came on my radio. Hello bland and banal…

I still dig you Michael, really I do. But Air Supply? Seriously? Argh!

If you aren’t familiar with the Air Supply oeuvre, check out the video after the jump. “Even the Nights Are Better” was a hit for the band back in 1982. Eep.

  1. Air Supply was one of my favorite bands back in the day. I got their e-mail the other day with a link to the new song and I gotta say…I HATE IT!! Michael’s voice just does not fit into Air Supply’s music at all.

  2. I got their e-mail the other day with a link to the new song and I gotta say…I HATE IT!! Michael’s voice just does not fit into Air Supply’s music at all.

Really? Could you email the link to me?

  3. Michael Johns is one of those unexplainable things about Idol. He’s good looking, nice voice, nice enough guy, and was entertaining on the tour. That elusive thing you need to connect just seemed to be missing.

  4. Oh, Michael. Is it an Australian thing? Do people still love Air Supply in Australia?

    Still hot, if somewhat dorkier.

  5. I admit to a fondness for Air Supply in maudlin moments in my youth but… man, that duet is awful. His voice and the Air Supply dude’s voice just don’t go. It sounds like they are doing karaoke, lol.

Aw, Michael. You can do better, man!

  6. His voice and the Air Supply dude’s voice just don’t go.

Yes. Plus, the song is crap.

  7. Gonna go back to my iPod and listen to “It’s Too Late” and cleanse that from my ears, lol.

  8. Air Supply? I know his album was throwbacky, but… Air Supply? I hope it pays well. Maybe he thinks their audience would buy his stuff?

Oh, Michael. I hope it works out for him.

ETA: Holy crap I just listened to it. Not good Michael. Just no. Ugh.

  9. I liked them back when I was 10. They actually still sound pretty much the same, but Michael doesn’t sound good at all. What’s up with that? I hope it was a good paycheck.

  10. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!

    Hilarious and Horrible… I guess that’s a duet too! ;-)

  11. Ugh, I love Michael, honestly I do, but this is just awful. I actually liked Air Supply when I was a kid, I have no shame, but this makes that stuff sound like Chopin (it’s his birthday by the way, lol). It’s really, really crappy. I almost expect it to be a parody, tell me it is MJ?

  12. I loved Air Supply, while I was in High School. I remember listening over and over with my equally unpopular outcast friends to Lost in Love and fantazing about the cute popular basketball player boy who would never date me. I saw them perform a concert at Taste of Chicago as a teen. Wow no surprise my favorite idol never wins.

  13. Wasn’t that Air Supply song in the youtube used as a movie soundtrack? Was it ‘Arthur’?

I wasn’t a fan and they were pretty sickening sweet. This one with Michael Johns sounds amazingly amateurish.

  14. I was actually excited for a moment until I realized that I was thinking of the Little River Band. I don’t think this song will help the careers of either.

  15. See, it’s one thing to hook up with a has-been band. It’s an iffy thing, but it could work. It’s another to hook up with Air Supply. Oh yeah, he’s a rawker. LOL.

  16. There is an Australian connection here which explains it. Air Supply is an Australian group that Michael probably loved as a kid as he is Australian as well.

  17. There is an Australian connection here which explains it. Air Supply is an Australian group that Michael probably loved as a kid as he is Australian as well.

Nationality shouldn’t usurp taste. Even Rick Springfield is better.

  18. I honestly thought the lead singer for Air Supply was dead.

    I’m sorry!

But eww, Air Supply? DNW. Not a good idea, Michael, even if they’re Australian like you…

  19. hahaha… I used to make soooo much fun of one of my best friends because she listened to Air Supply… Maybe I should gift this song to her!

Okay – no. I’m listening now. I need to be paid to gift it – not worth the .99.

  20. Isn’t the Little River Band still around? Now THERE was a good band. Mybe Michael should have hooked up with them

  21. I like Michael’s voice and think his own album is really, really good, but this? This song is craptacular. He sounds ridiculous trying to sing along to this bland has-been puff rawk. It’s embarrassing really. Hope he at least got some money out of this.

  22. Hope he got good money for this and will get new fans because oh man that’s a departure from the real Micheal *snif*

  23. For some reason I came across one of those late-night infomercials (insomnia? haha) and there was two of the guys from Air Supply hawking their for-lack-of-a-better-word “music” and I could not believe what they were charging for it! The entire set of CDs was something like $2-300. I wondered who would be making monthly payments for this? I guess they still have fans out there, lol.

Michael: Please don’t release this!!! You are so much better.

  24. Toooooo funny MJ. I bet I switched my radio faster!!! What miserable music to be running through my head – along with all the other voices!

  25. I loved Air Supply as a kid: don’t judge! BUT, what is this decision, Michael Johns? And to think I usually consider him the Idol who just needs that one hit song to break the barrier. I really liked a couple songs on his album. But this ain’t gonna help.

  26. This song is certainly not what I would hope for from Michael. I don’t know what happened, but he’s better than that.

  27. How about this new song Michael has written called “The Only One”- he has put a 30 second snippet on twitter. I think its quite catchy –

By the way there are quite a number of fans that really love this version of Hold On with MJ & Air Supply – so each to their own & being Aussie myself – I would think it would mean a lot to Michael to be asked to join them . He still values his Aussie heritage a lot!!

Oh Girlygirl- about Little River Band. Yes they were a great Band but one of the members in a time when they weren’t together, went & took the name & started his own band. He did not write any of the original songs & the group has nowhere near the same good sound they used to have . Glenn Shorrick, Beep Burtles & Graham Doble [ the original lead singer & co writers] do perform together on occasion though!!

  28. Bring back Brooke White! SOB.

I know, right? Maybe that will be my 2nd song in bleaching this one from my brain. I need something to get Air Supply out of my head because they are stuck in there now… “Making looooveeee… out of nothing at all….” Gack.

  29. Holy Shit. I thought Michael committed career suicide by hanging out so much with Mr. Easy Listening, David Foster. Clearly, I didn’t recognize just how ambitious Mr. Johns would be on his express ticket to obscurity.

Air Supply was lame in their heyday. Now, I don’t even have a word to describe how z list they are. And, this song is horrendous. No good can come from this. None at all. What a waste of talent.

    ETA:

“Making looooveeee… out of nothing at all….”

tierbee, if you do that again, you’ll be punished :).

  30. Nationality shouldn’t usurp taste. Even Rick Springfield is better.

Aww, don’t harsh Rick Springfield. I mean, all these years later, and he’s still pining after Jesse’s girl. Poor guy.

  31. Aww, don’t harsh Rick Springfield.

I still have a soft spot for Dr. Noah Drake :).

  32. “I’m all out of love, I’m so lost w/o you, I know you were right, believing for so long…”

Yep, used to be my fave all time song until I started dating the David Lee Roth wanna be, and Air Supply was oh so wrong. LOL. Awww memories.

Um, Michael Johns I’ll just wish you best on this.

ETA: I wonder if DC still “gets him”?

  33. When today doesn’t really know… doesn’t reaallllly know… I’m all out of love… I’m so lost without you…

Oh, boy. That came out in 1980? (thanks songfacts.org, lol). I was just a lil’ girl – but I remember sitting around listening to that red Air Supply cassette when my 6th grade boyfriend broke up with me. Damn you, Beau Fonda!

And I was *totally* listening to “Jessie’s Girl” today on my iPod (and since every old song is about a boy, that one reminds me of Jessie at soccer camp who I looooved). Michael Johns would be way cooler to do a duet with Rick Springfield than Air Supply in my book of cool rankings. Heh.

  34. OMG I saw “Air Supply” at Disney World when I was like 10. My parents made me sit through it. This is too funny. The song sucks horribly! What the heck is Michael thinking?
I bet Cookie laughed his ass off when he heard this. hahahhahha….I know I am.

  35. Aww, I love Air Supply, guilty pleasure! They were my favorite band when I was 3 (seriously). But this song? Just no.

  36. Awwww, MJ you have me laughing out loud! Besides the Temptations, there is only one other group I saw in concert FOUR times! Yep, it was Air Supply. They were my favorite group while falling in love for the second time.

Maybe the song will sound better on the album?

  37. THIS is a fun thread!!!!

I’m all out of love. I’m so lost withou hout you…

  38. I LOVED “Air Supply” back in my teenage years (I was young and in & out of love–I loved cheesy love songs).

However, this is horrible. Poor Michael. Hopefully he gets more opportunities. I have a friend that knew him before idol, she said he is an awesome guy. I have to remember to show this to her.

  39. Air Supply – yuch – but I really didn’t expect him to have any taste.

  40. Oh, dear. I’m sorry that the sort of cheesy-as-heck vibe I tend to get from Michael seems to be borne out here. On the other hand, cheesiness sometimes seems to pay the rent better than good taste does.

  41. Air supply is fantastic. Their song “Chances” is STILL one of my all time favorites. I would love to hear Adam sing that song-it is applicable to everyone one time or another or even again.

  42. “How about this new song Michael has written called “The Only One”- he has put a 30 second snippet on twitter. I think its quite catchy –

    http://twaud.io/2yb

I think its interesting that there has been no comment on Michael’s new song snippet that I posted earlier , so I thought I’d post again to see if anyone has an opinion on this. This has also been out there on Twitter – so it would be good to have a balance of what he is doing now!!

  43. Clearly, I didn’t recognize just how ambitious Mr. Johns would be on his express ticket to obscurity.

Snark just doesn’t get any better than that. You got the gold.

  44. Snark just doesn’t get any better than that. You got the gold.

I am humbled and grateful :).

  45. This was not nearly as bad as it was made out to be. Michael doesn’t sing until around 1:15… I heard three different voices on this and the second voice sounded like a singer from Styx! I don’t know who the first voice was. But MJ sounded good …. I’m a fan of MJ, what can I say. Yes, it’s 80’s schmaltzy…but I have some of those 80’s records in my collection. ;)

  46. Lakies- thank you I thought I was the only fan of Michael’s left around here!!
The first 2 singers were the Air Supply guys & Michael is only heard towards the end & in the harmonies. I happen to think the harmonies are great- we don’t hear enough of it these days. Its what I love when Kris sings with Cale – their harmonies are great.
Lakies- did you check out Michael’s new song snippet that I listed above?

“Clearly, I didn’t recognize just how ambitious Mr. Johns would be on his express ticket to obscurity.”

Actually – Michael has been busy ever since he left the idol stage & is doing very nicely for himself. I think that different people have a different perspective on success- & to me if Michael is able to get paid consistently doing something he loves – then that is what is important!!
He is a great live performer & he has been asked to come back & do live gigs all over the place – that is his real skill [ as against many more “famous ” performers who can’t sing live for anything *cough*Brittany*cough*!!!]!

Good points! David Foster wouldn’t keep including him if he weren’t capable. :)
