Christina knew it would be something special when she heard Malik’s “accurate amazing runs,” she says. When Pharrell asks for influences, Malik offers up Sam Smith, Bruno Mars, and Justin Timberlake. Pharrell casually mentions that he’s a producer, and would like to be part of the singer’s journey going forward, but it’s fine if he picks Christina. Playing a cool game there, Pharrell!
Christina grew up on stage, she says, and is all about nurturing an artist. Pharrell one-ups her–he has been making records since he was 18, just not in the public eye like Christina. He worked with Justin when he was Malik’s age. And Britney too. Uh oh. Christina’s in trouble. EXCEPT WAIT. She knew both artists FIRST when they all worked on the Mickey Mouse club together.
Pharrell rightly reminds Malik that Christina has been living out her life as an artist, while he’s been making records for artists. So who would be the better mentor? “You have the growing plant,” Pharrell refers to Christina and you have the greenhouse, he says, referring to himself.
“Then you have the tree that blossoms and breaks the greenhouse,” says Christina standing up to dramatize.
It’s quite the fight, but you’ll have to wait until Monday to find which coach Malik chooses.
