  1. Very cute and very sweet video, but I thought he didn’t have a car. LOL.

  2. Heh. Interesting that they ripped off – err, reused – the plot of Serendipity. Kind of cute, but very 90’s style really.

  3. I never noticed that he sings out of the side of his mouth kind of like Kris. Nice product placement by Ford and prolly Sony (cell phone)?. Song is catchy. :)

ETA: Also liked the band being in the video. Three of Adam’s videos had the band and I think it just makes them more fun. Bad TFM!

  4. I don’t think the video or song will gain Lee any new fans. The video looks pretty low budget (and cheesey), right down to the cut out letters on the bedspread. More so, Lee is photographed as this short, stubby guy (he seems to have packed on quite a few pounds since AI).

  5. Cute. Not sure why, but I was expecting something more original, based on the director’s reel. But the video fits the song, anyway, so that’s good.

I was a little distracted by the obvious product placement, though :)

  6. It’s perfect for the song! It’s adorable.

but I thought he didn’t have a car. LOL.

That is funny, isn’t it? You would think he’d be riding a bike or something.

  7. Shameless fangirl moment- I LOVELOVELOVE the video, Jonna and Lee couldn’t look any more adorable :D

I give them props for many things in this video. The editing and effects are really neat and fun. We got a shot of Lee in bed (yes, I find great pleasure in this. Sue me.) They got to ride around in mustangs, they showed the band, and there were plenty of gorgeous Lee shots. I plan on watching this video many times in the very near future :D

  8. Not a Lee fan, or a SS fan, but I thought the video was very cute. It’s not artsy or anything, but it’s fun and lighthearted and fits the song. I’d guess teenage girls would love it. Which makes me confused again about the song getting pushed to HAC and not to CHR, lol.

  9. Sidenote, but shouldn’t the album have been released to iTunes by now? Usually happens at midnight Eastern time…

  10. Not too bad, but looks like it was sorta done on the cheap. The song just doesn’t do much for me.

  11. Ok I’m not a Lee fan, season 9 was boring (IMHO) so I could care less about Lee’s video (or so I thought) but I still watched, not bad but not overly impressed, but that song is really starting to get in my head. I’m actually starting to think I will need to check out the CD, color me surprised!

  12. My first reaction – this is the best they can come up with for someone who won American Idol? Very average video, but then the song is very average. It’s not the kind of video that would make me interested in hearing more of Lee’s music. The look of the video reminds me of those from the early 1980’s, where they appeared very amateurishly produced.

  13. LIU isn’t available on itunes right now. It doesn’t even show up when you search for him. I don’t know if that’s typical, if itunes has to take it down before putting it back up for sale.

  14. I actually LIKE the song “Sweet Serendipity”. It’s lightweight fluff, but it’s catchy–a good radio song. The video fits the vibe of the song very well, I think.

  15. Cute! I’m not a Lee fan, but he really looked good in this video. I think if anything is going to sell him it’s the gravelly voice. So many go for that and it’s quite appealing.

The vid definitely fits the song. The song is still a little pressured for me. I like the slower part(s)? best. Cute!

  16. Sure hope the video shows up on youtube soon for us non americans who are waiting less patiently to see it!

  17. The video was cute – liked it better once it got past the whole Ford commercial vibe early on ;) But it definitely suits the song.

  18. Cute video! I love the lightheartedness of both the song and the video. It kind of reminds me of DA’s Crush.

I don’t know if that’s typical, if itunes has to take it down before putting it back up for sale.

Usually new albums are available at midnight ET, sometimes even by 11:30 PM or so. I don’t remember seeing any disappear completely the way LIU has.

Has anyone gotten Only Dreaming, the AI website’s bonus song, yet? I downloaded the album at midnight, but OD wasn’t with it, and there’s no indication that I’ll get a separate DL link later.

I think a lot of people will appreciate how light hearted the video is, and the song is just so catchy, that I can’t imagine it not crossing over to CHR after it charts higher on HAC. Just because it’s not being pushed to CHR now doesn’t mean that a push will never happen.

  20. Usually new albums are available at midnight ET, sometimes even by 11:30 PM or so. I don’t remeber seeing any disappear completely the way LIU has.

Kris’ fan pack disappeared, and then it took them forever to load the regular version that they were selling that included No Boundaries as the bonus song.

  21. Has anyone gotten Only Dreaming, the AI website’s bonus song, yet? I downloaded the album at midnight, but OD wasn’t with it, and there’s no indication that I’ll get a separate DL link later.

I’m downloading the album from there now, it doesn’t include OD. With the Live It Up single (to download early), they sent out an email with the download link pretty late in the day. I’m guessing that’s what will happen again tomorrow.

  22. has RCA or 19 screwed up this release somehow? I’m really surprised the CD isn’t up on itunes yet. I remember there were issues with Kris’ iPass last year, but I’m pretty sure the album was still up on itunes by midnight eastern.

    Can you buy the video?

Usually Itunes will have the video for sale a week or two after it premieres :)

  24. This video is adorable and Jonna and Lee look great together. The product placement is fine with me-I’m assuming it helps cover the cost of the video. Adam’s latest video began with a Sony product. These are thrifty times!
LiveItUp is still trending on twitter- probably people tweeting “Where is my album!”

  25. Girlygirl Live It Up has been available for pre-order on itunes for some weeks,as have most of the Nov 16 releases. Come about 20 to midnight ET ALL the Nov 16 releases went off the various charts. They all came back on within a half hour, EXCEPT for Live It Up, and since then the new Rascal Flatts release has also appeared. All trace of Live It Up has disappeared from iTunes, its as though it never existed.

There’s now a rather anxious and frustrated group of fans waiting for their download! Looks like a major snafu to me, but whether its by iTunes or RCA I don’t know!

As a side note fans tried to trend #liveitup on twitter in the hour before midnight, it was floating around #10 or so until it was fueled by the delay! Its currently at #4 for the US.

  26. There’s now a rather anxious group of fans waiting! Looks like a major snafu to me!

Something like this happens every year. Last year, they had Allison’s debut single on sale for a while then pulled it for quite a while. iTunes often has little glitches like this.

Just wait until a few stores don’t have the album in stock (because some stock person hasn’t gone through the inventory) or somebody’s receipt just says “CD” (and the angst about whether it will be credited as a sale to Lee or lost in the ether forever).

why do you keep saying its trending on twitter? where? I must be looking in the wrong place, because this is what my twitter says:

ETA: I see someone else picked up on that as well lol

  29. Girlygirl-I just now checked again-it’s #4 on twitter in the United States; maybe the one you are looking at is set for worldwide?

  31. iTunes does a rolling update on Tuesday night. Usually takes 4 hours to update everything.

MV is cute. And this is almost like a “real” recording artist’s schedule — with the lead album single’s video out before the album. What a novel concept! :)

  32. can’t wait to watch the video, still not available for people outside the US :(

i don’t know though what other people were expecting based on the behind the scenes footage.. i don’t think any futuristic, artsy fartsy, or complex concept would fit this kind of breezy, light-hearted ditty ;)

That’s what I remember also, with Kris’s. The Itunes pass never reappeared, but I finally got a link about a week or two later. The regular and deluxe version of the album were out at midnight, and the deluxe one had everything the itunes pass had on it. They were going to give me the deluxe album but I finally got the link for the pass.

The album didn’t totally disapear like this one has.

  34. ok, thanks — I have no idea what my twitter trend list is set for, TBH. I was just like huh??? since I didn’t see LiveItUp. So thanks!

  35. ok, thanks — I have no idea what my twitter trend list is set for, TBH. I was just like huh??? since I didn’t see LiveItUp. So thanks!

yep, got confused with twitter when i started too, didn’t understand stuff like trends & such ;)

  36. Song remains just OK for me (won’t change the radio station if it comes on but not buying it either). The video is cute in a school girl’s first crush kind of way, but WTF is up with the soul patch gone wild? That thing is just straight up fugly. Seriously looks like a small critter attached itself to his chin and is clinging on for dear life.

Sorry Lee fans, not trying to be mean, but it’s kind of disturbing, lol

  37. Love the video- makes me love the song even more-they look adorable together-Great Lee smiles!

  38. Aw, I’m hardly a big Lee fan but I love the video! Very cute and I think it will sell the single (which is starting to grow on me). Very adorable. :)

Happy album release day to Lee and his fans! I hope it’ll be a great week for him.

  39. Has anyone gotten Only Dreaming, the AI website’s bonus song, yet? I downloaded the album at midnight, but OD wasn’t with it, and there’s no indication that I’ll get a separate DL link later.

I ordered the album off of AI’s website and I haven’t gotten any notice that its available to download. I got the email to download the song Live It Up but I was expecting something to tell me the album was ready for download. I went to the site but when I go to my order status it just says this “Live It Up Digital Album Purchased (0/0 downloaded)” and doesn’t give me anywhere to download the album. Hopefully I’ll get it figured out so I can download it.

Anyway on to the video. I really liked it. I think its really adorable and fits the song perfectly. Its just fun and breezy.

  40. OK, I just got to see the video and I like it. I am not a Lee fan or have been following him at all so just imagine me being Joe Public just discovering him. I wasn’t crazy about the song but a good video can change my mind, it seems to always happen for me like that. So I think the song can really do well on radio and sales.

  41. I’ll be buying the video-Great storyline- entertaining, fun and just what I’d hoped for!

  42. I can’t watch the video either! Can’t wait for it to be available in my region!!! I wanna see it right now!

  43. The more I hear this song the more I like it. But I listened to Live It Up and I actually love that song much better. It is different and that is why. Don’t care for this video, like some have said it is “cheesy” but love the band action and Lee in it.

  44. Sweet video! I hope they play this song on the radio…a lot! It’s fun and makes you feel good. I think it’s great first single for Lee. I’d rather hear this than much of the trash out there.

  45. Cute video for a cute song. Lee isn’t a knockout, sure, but the band shots with the sun and blue eyes were nice. I’m really rooting for this song to do well, if only because he could follow it up with another strong single *coughbeautifullikeyoucough*.

  46. Awww—cute! Loved it-way to go Lee! I agree – suits the vibe of the song to a tee.

  47. My preorder listing is still there, only sign of the album I see….. So frustrating.

  48. I think the video is adorable and really fits Lee! It’s simple just like him a “Simple Man”!

Yeah, it is a bad idea. A stylist should tell him it makes his face even more square, not a good look. The video was fine, I found myself watching the girl more than Lee, she was spunky and cute. For as upbeat as the song is, he still looks droopy and bored singing it. It’s a disconnect for me. But for a first video, it’s fine.

  50. I learn something every day on MJs, lol!

Had no idea there was a separate trend list for US and worldwide; mine is worldwide. No wonder it has always been so difficult to trend, we’ve been looking at worldwide, lol.

The video was distracting for me to look at with the two sides going on at once, I didn’t really like that.
But I think it is a success because it made me like the song more, and that is what vids. are supposed to do.

Yeah, what with the “aint got no car” and they climb into one?! They should have had a motorcycle.

  51. It reminds me of the video for Daniel Powter’s Bad Day (that boot song from Season 5).

  52. We got a shot of Lee in bed (yes, I find great pleasure in this. Sue me.)

Amen. I’ll split the lawyer fee with you.

As I am late to the party, as usual, I don’t have anything new to add. I like the video. It’s light and a bit of fluff, but fits the song. This is unlike the video Cook did for Light On where, to me, it was difficult to decide if you were supposed to be happy or sad when it was finished. No doubt, I am in a good mood at the end of Lee’s song and the video – don’t have to make any difficult decisions.

RE the comments about Lee’s weight…there must be a number of ladies liking it, as a lot of them are making plans to travel some distance to see him at his upcoming venues. I’ll speak for women in general here; we don’t waste plane, train, and automobile fare on fat male singers.

  53. MJ :I think it’s light-hearted and adorable. A good match for the song. Me likes.

Me likes very much too :)

Loving the band with the natural sunshine backdrop . Great inclusion to the video.
Really good day to be a Lee fan.

  54. The video IS kinda cute, but the song still gives me a headache. My favorite part was the Ford product placement. I was expecting Kris to pop up from the backseat to inform the girl that Lee’s song is in her car, like, forever.

  55. It was a good fit for the song and made the song seem better to me, and I’m not even a fan.

  56. vascot: It reminds me of the video for Daniel Powter’s Bad Day (that boot song from Season 5).

    Exactly what I was thinking!

The video’s cute and honestly I’ve come around to thinking SS could be a solid HAC hit. It’s not the greatest song but it’s light hearted and cute.

  57. Fan girls will probably love this cutesy video, freshly cut from the MTV formula template. Personally, I was getting motion sick watching the dual screens with frenetic camera changes, but, then again, I’m not the target audience. Early teen girls are clearly the market that Lee and 19 are going for, so from that perspective I guess it could work.

  58. I think its adorable. And I have no issues with the product placement at all if it means less money for the cost coming out of Lee’s pocket.

Last I checked I’m 35 so at least its appealing to SOME non-teens.

  59. Last I checked I’m 35 so at least its appealing to SOME non-teens.

Look, of course there are exceptions to every rule. Hell, there are undoubtedly some middle aged straight men out there who love show tunes, Cher and figure skating. Similarly, I’m sure there are also some tweenage girls who can’t stand formula pop and love classic rock from the 70’s. I bet there are even some blacks in the inner city who love country music and Glee.

Nothing wrong with being unconventional, but the target audience for Lee is definitely teen girl.

  60. Well I think Lee appeals to women of all ages. And I would bet that many of us 30+ ladies are more devoted fans of Lee’s than the teens.

  61. Well I think Lee appeals to women of all ages. And I would bet that many of us 30+ ladies are more devoted fans of Lee’s than the teens.

Maybe you’re right…but typically it’s girls under 18 who drive Pop 40 sales.

  62. As a video, I think it’s a cute concept that’s actually more on target for fans of young-life-in-the-big-city rom-coms (who tend to be women in their 20s and early 30s). I can actually see it doing quite well on VH1 because of that.

But the whole thing just really drives home the point that DeWyze has no flippin’ clue what “serendipity” means. Nothing about that video is accidental. He orchestrates; she follows the clues. And then there’s coffee. Yay! But neither of them are searching for something else.

  63. DeWyze has no flippin’ clue what “serendipity” means. Nothing about that video is accidental. He orchestrates; she follows the clues. And then there’s coffee. Yay! But neither of them are searching for something else.

This thought kind of ran thru my mind too. We can’t really blame it on Lee though since he was given directions on what to do meaning the concept for the video was the producers, right? Anyway, it’s a cute video. Lee and the band looks great. Jonna is a pretty girl. I hope the video does help push the single.

  64. Cute video, even if it isn’t very “serendipitious”. I found myself watching the girl more than Lee. And I immediately thought of LLWD with the opening shot of the digital clock. Lee and the band look good and his “acting” is credible. I think it will do well on VH1 and help sell the song.

  65. I think it’s a cute concept that’s actually more on target for fans of young-life-in-the-big-city rom-coms (who tend to be women in their 20s and early 30s).

Yes, I know I’m not hip to new lingo, but WTF is a “rom-com”? My wild-ass-guess is it’s a digital age commuter who’s always on a lap top or smart phone? Am I close? Color me clueless.

  66. My favorite part was the Ford product placement. I was expecting Kris to pop up from the backseat to inform the girl that Lee’s song is in her car, like, forever.

    cheese—VERY funny! :-)

  67. Nothing wrong with being unconventional, but the target audience for Lee is definitely teen girl.

Then why is he being promoted on HAC and not CHR.. if it is so clear?

Personally, I’m just happy the vid didn’t take place at the desert, dinner or club. ;)

  68. But the whole thing just really drives home the point that DeWyze has no flippin’ clue what “serendipity” means. Nothing about that video is accidental.

But then you are sort of assuming that Lee had some sort of creative control. Heh. Unless a debut vid is distinct to an idol’s style, I’m guessing assuming that someone is just sticking a storyboard in front of them for sign off.

  69. DeWyze has no flippin’ clue what “serendipity” means. Nothing about that video is accidental. He orchestrates; she follows the clues. And then there’s coffee. Yay! But neither of them are searching for something else.

Alanis Morissette doesn’t know the definition of Ironic, but it didn’t stop that song from becoming a hit.

  70. Alanis Morissette doesn’t know the definition of Ironic, but it didn’t stop that song from becoming a hit.

LOL, so true! Well I like the video, i think it’s cute, and I am also happy it wasn’t shot in the desert.

  71. Alanis Morissette doesn’t know the definition of Ironic, but it didn’t stop that song from becoming a hit.

Heh. If LD gets thousands of people to roll their eyes and go, “I found a leaf! Isn’t that sweetly serendipitous!” the way they did with “Ironic,” more power to him.

And the reason I’m looking to him him instead of just the director and producer is because his own lyrics don’t properly define “serendipity” either. But I am glad that the video didn’t directly relate to said lyrics; DNW stretched-out jeans falling down and tripping him.

  72. Then why is he being promoted on HAC and not CHR.. if it is so clear?

Not that I’m an expert on chart differentiation, but isn’t CHR and HAC very similar? I mean, yes, one plays pop hits from the 90’s to today (HAC), while the other exclusively plays today’s Top 40, so I guess it’s a bit different, but is it really a different listener? Won’t the same person be likely to have both stations set on their dial? Won’t the two stations overlap on a decent amount of their music?

  73. so I guess it’s a bit different, but is it really a different listener?

Demographically, yes. Because HAC tends to play a lot less hip-hop, more rock, and more older songs, the target audience is 25-50, where the target audience for CHR is 12-30. There is a great deal of overlap in the songs, but plenty of songs do reasonably well on HAC and get no traction on CHR, and the reverse.

Now, there are several valid reasons for starting with HAC for someone like DeWyze, the chief one being that HAC is more open to pop-rock and former AI contestants. If he can turn SS into a decent hit there, it’s much better to try and launch it at CHR with that tailwind than have tried to do so directly with his minimal buzz. But it does mean that, by definition, “teen girls” are not the target audience for that strategy, at least not at the beginning.

    Great explanation…thanks (again)!

  75. Negativo – just to add. My HAC and CHR stations are very distinct in character. Lots and lots of older songs on our HAC with only pop that charts high on CHR. Relative to a teen (say age 12-19) most of the songs on the HAC would seem like oldies. To us, post-grunge (for example) was just a blink ago and to them, it was before their time.

  76. I wonder if Lee’s lack of crossover appeal to men will affect his sales at all. I honestly don’t know… male pop singers that appeal almost exclusively to women have been successful in the past, so it’s certainly possible he could do very well without the Y chromosome’s assistance.

In fact, the two artists I’d compare Lee to most in style and sound would be Brian Adams and Michael Bolton, and look what they accomplished with an all female clientele. If Lee can similarly tap into that audience he’ll definitely hit it big.

  77. The two artists I’d compare Lee to most in style and sound would be Brian Adams and Michael Bolton

Thank goodness I wasn’t eating or drinking something, I would have choked reading that! Thanks for the jokes Negativo ;)

I think it’s important, regardless of gender, for Lee to connect with an audience outside the AI bubble. It’s been said a million times here, but he really needs to sell himself and the album when he’s doing interviews or performances. I’m crossing my fingers for him to succeed at this.

  78. Hell, there are undoubtedly some middle aged straight men out there who love show tunes, Cher and figure skating

    This cracked me up! :)

Both the CD and Video have a very lighthearted, upbeat feel to them. I like!

  79. As I am late to the party, as usual, I don’t have anything new to add. I like the video. It’s light and a bit of fluff, but fits the song. This is unlike the video Cook did for Light On where, to me, it was difficult to decide if you were supposed to be happy or sad when it was finished

Yeah I thought about that video when I was watching this one. I love Cook but I always thought the plotline of the LO video had nothing to do with the song, not that Cook had any say in it either. But I did love the shots of Cook and the band on the football field.

But with this video I thought it fit the song perfectly.

  80. I can’t stop watching the SS video. I really feel like the simplicity of the video really fits the song. Can’t wait to see Lee’s VH1 acoustic performance, hope we see it soon!

  81. This is no great work of art, but is fun, catchy, and sometimes that’s all you need. I think the video and the little story it tells is adorable. Still not really feeling the song though.

  82. It looks cute and light. I agree with others, the video doesn’t match the song. I also agree the words to the song have little to do with serendipity either.

Also noticed the digital clock and thought of Kris and LLWD. Ditto the car and radio for the Ford commercials. The story looks like what Elliot Yamin did for his video. I forget the name of that song, but it worked well.

  83. Nice Video nice vibe and I think it will do very well. Is it ground breaking no Is it safe….Yes but still good. I think it will do very well. I hope they get it on VH1 right away. It will do very well there on the top 20 and I think it could take off from the exposure on VH1. Lee look great in the MV and very relaxed. A huge accomplishment since I never got that from him. I liked the video. Made me smile and that is always good. :-)

  84. MV is cute. And this is almost like a “real” recording artist’s schedule — with the lead album single’s video out before the album. What a novel concept! :)

ROTFLMAO….LOL yep what a concept….you think someone messed up at RCA and accidentally rolled Lee out the correct way instead of the usual Idol way. J/K But it almost seems like this is true but I know it isn’t. (well maybe. Ha ha ha)

  85. It looked like a very bad 80’s video. The only part I liked was the red umbrella, and that lasted one sec.The song I Actually like ,the vid.-NO.But Lee’s big problem is sales-I think there is ZERO chance of him beating even Gokey’s sales numbers.A legitimate album has to gain momentum, and this one will do well for about a week, mostly due to the traditional pre-order bump from Idol winners, and second placers, then fade badly.Problem is in the label’s choices for Lee and poor strategy of what to market him in,and there’s loads of other problems-uniformly bad reviews are just the tip of the iceberg…

  86. haha, lots of lulzy posts! always fun to come on here.. i finally got to see the video today!! yey! i loved it, i found myself just smiling throughout the entire thing. it was fun, groovy and feel-good. lee & jonna were adorable together. the band looked cool, jamming together. and on a shallow note, i enjoyed the bits where i could see lee’s baby blues, cute! he just looked so relaxed and just “him” on this video. hope this helps attract other people to his music :)
