  1. Lauren will do wonders with that song! I can’t believe that I’ve never thought of it before. Thank you, judge.

  2. Come on, Girl….you can do this!! Lauren has been my *over-all* pick to win Idol in the pool……she needs to win this thing and save my pitiful score so far! :)

  3. That seems like a very safe choice for Lauren, so I’m guessing it was probably Steven who picked it. He probably remembered hearing it a dozen times Hollywood Week.

  4. I was hoping for a song to push her out of her confort zone. She’ll do fine but i don’t expect a moment form it. Kind of wish it was for Scotty to either relive or redeem the “Nuts of Wonder” moment.

  5. He probably remembered hearing it a dozen times Hollywood Week.

LOL. I imagine it somehow penetrated his sometimes fog of haze.

What did Lauren sing that round?

ETA: I went back and found it. She sang “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” again for the Hollywood solo round.

  6. Vanilla song, IMO. It’s so exactly and safely ‘in her wheelhouse’, it could be any of the three judges…and any of the three contestants could do OKfine with it, ETA – Well, Scotty could if he learned the words…but it’s too overdone and karaoke prone to expect a ‘moment’ from the poor song, minus the Nuts of Wonder. But no wonder it’s a tough call to chose which judge picked it, mj. In another season, I would name Randy – in this one? IDK either.

Not exactly on a par w/Simon handing DavidC “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” – since that was such a rocker’s tune. *snerk*

  7. I wonder if the judges get to decide which contestants they get?
My hope is Randy got Scotty, JLo got Alaina and Steven got Haley. Please don’t let Randy choose Haley’s song. “I Hope You Dance” would have been very good for Scotty.

  8. I’m having second thoughts now. I love this song but I think it really is a mother singing to her daughter. It’s a great message song but it’s words might be a little strange coming out of a 16 year old’s mouth. Any thoughts?

  9. “I Hope You Dance” would have been very good for Scotty.

It would have been driving a bus over him, backing up over him again, getting out, spitting on him, getting back in the bus for one more run over.

Heck, even giving it to Lauren is a little bit of a bus. If they play his “Nuts of Wonder” clip again before Lauren sings, it is a total bus.

  10. The only time I’ve ever enjoyed this song was the “nuts of wonder in ur jeans” version. I don’t think Lauren can top that.

They’ll probably be boring with Scotty and give him something by the “babylockthemdoors” singer or Elvis just so he doesn’t have to stretch at all.

Haley- If they want her gone, they should give her a Kelly song and then make the comparison and tell her she shouldn’t have tried to sing Kelly.

  11. It would have been driving a bus over him, backing up over him again, getting out, spitting on him, getting back in the bus for one more run over.

Heck, even giving it to Lauren is a little bit of a bus. If they play his “Nuts of Wonder” clip again before Lauren sings, it is a total bus.

My thoughts exactly, Kirsten!!! I have a feeling they will try to bus Scotty anyway.

That said, I think it’s a good pick for Lauren. I hope she belts it out!!

  12. It would have been driving a bus over him, backing up over him again, getting out, spitting on him, getting back in the bus for one more run over.

But then he could’ve turned into the Hulk and thrown that bus right at the judges table with his redemption. HULK SMASH!

Actually, I think it would’ve been a bad choice for Scotty.

Giving it to Lauren is a little bit of a bus, so I’m just hoping she doesn’t do well with it >_>. Scotty has to make it through.

Haley- If they want her gone, they should give her a Kelly song and then make the comparison and tell her she shouldn’t have tried to sing Kelly.

Randy: “I chose Kelly Clarkson so Haley can feel what it would be like to be an American Idol winner. *nose starts growing longer* I think she could have a moment with this song.”
    *after her performance*
Randy: “Dawg…. Nobody can do that like Kelly Clarkson. For me for you, that was terrible. It was pitchy, it was the wrong song choice….”

At which point, Haley comes up to Randy and punches him so hard in the face that he gets decapitated.

I hope to God that Randy isn’t picking for Haley. I can’t really see him picking this for Lauren, so he has to be picking for Scotty.

I think J. Lo might have picked it for Lauren. I somehow think Steven would’ve chosen something a little more upbeat.

  13. lol, I know the song is very safe and boring but I don’t think I ever heard a male’s spin on the song. I don’t even know if the words can even lend themselves to a male singing it.

  14. I don’t even know if the words can even lend themselves to a male singing it.

Danny sang I Hope You Dance during S8 Hollywood Week. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crz6AT0SChc)

I’ve always liked the song. It could be a little adult for someone of Lauren’s age, but then that’s been an issue all season long given the very young performers (much more so Scotty than Lauren, IMO, with song choices to this point).

She should be able to do well with it, and I don’t think her voting base is looking for her to do something really edgy.

  15. lol, I know the song is very safe and boring but I don’t think I ever heard a male’s spin on the song. I don’t even know if the words can even lend themselves to a male singing it.

Danny did it during season 8 in Hollywood.

  16. Are Jimmy’s picks for the contestants also being announced today?

  17. Fullmoon – “Nuts of Wonder”??? How quickly we forget. *chuckle*

(Expecting a list of male vocalists who did this song to materialize at any minute.)

It would have been driving a bus over him, backing up over him again, getting out, spitting on him, getting back in the bus for one more run over.

And the visuals from this are still cracking me up!!

  18. I’m working under the assumption that Steven made the song selection for Lauren. And he probably doesn’t remember Scotty having a humorous moment with it.

Heck, I betcha Steven doesn’t even remember what he had for breakfast this morning.

  19. Danny sang I Hope You Dance during S8 Hollywood Week.

Thanks for bringing that over. I forgot Danny sang that song. Scotty has such a smooth and soothing tone to his voice I think he would have done really well with it. I think Lauren singing it is so predictable.

  20. Saw this on twitter

thadogburn Breaking #idol news: Scotty to sing Kenny Rogers’ “She Believes In Me” next week. Judge’s choice.

  21. Fullmoon – “Nuts of Wonder”??? How quickly we forget. *chuckle*

Slaps head on forehead. DUH!!! Then again maybe not so memorable of a song after all.

  22. Are Jimmy’s picks for the contestants also being announced today?

Usually, the music mogul’s choice isn’t revealed until the show (unless they leak).

I’m hoping that Jimmy gives a nod to our “beloved” Clive and wears a blue velour track suit when he tells the Idols what he’s going to [insert maniacal laughter] make them sing.

  23. Scotty to sing Kenny Rogers’ “She Believes In Me” next week.

Don’t you have to be at least 40 to sing that song?

  24. once id love to see a 3 way tie in the voting..haha wonder what they would do

  25. I’m kinda scared for Scotty. WAY too safe.

Jimmy’s choice should be Everybody’s Talkin’. I still think it was stupid of Scotty to change his song that week (and it was his worst performance IMO).

I think I SHOULD care for Lauren, but she’s just too big a threat to Scotty for me to do so.

  26. Another questionable song for Scotty as far as age-appropriateness. Unless you assume he’s singing about his mom, lol.

Don’t you have to be at least 40 to sing that song?

Based on the lyrics, I’d put minimum age at like 28. Recommended age, yeah, maybe 35+ ;) But Kenny Rogers isn’t that current to say the least, so probably add another decade or two for that reason :)

And it’ll be this song. Because, you know, girls aren’t supposed to take risks.

  28. I hate that choice for Lauren, it’s such a mom song. Also, not exactly the most current choice for Scotty.

  29. Another questionable song for Scotty as far as age-appropriateness. Unless you assume he’s singing about his mom, lol.

How is that supposed to make it better? He’s getting undressed in her room without the lights off while she’s sleeping. It’s probably best not to go there with your Mom. Then there is all the changing the world if your my girl.

  30. Safe.

WTH are the judges trying to sabotage Scotty or something? They should give him a song that would push him more.

  31. Well, if he didn’t chose at least one of those, then Randy’s script is written for next week –

“I don’t know, Dog – For me, for you, that was just too predictable.”

    Heh.

  32. I like Kenny Rogers. But “She Believes In Me” is a little too boring. A better Kenny song would have been “Lady.” In fact, I was semi-hoping Scotty would sing that on Motown week (Lionel Ritchie wrote that).

  33. While she lays sleeping, I stay out late at night and play my songs
And sometimes all the nights can be so long
And it’s good when I finally make it home, all alone
While she lays dreaming, I try to get undressed without the light
And quietly she says how was your night?
And I come to her and say, it was all right, and I hold her tight

On second thought, cue the hormonal teenage girls saying “OMG NO LEAVE THE LIGHT ON!” and voting like crazy. My hopes for Scotty just went up. YAY.

  34. I’m going to presume the judges don’t know much about country music; I don’t either, and I would be flummoxed having to pick songs for Lauren and Scotty.

Everyone jokes about what Randy would give Haley, when I think Jennifer would be way worse. They may have trouble with her; her repertoire is extensive.

Lauren needs at least a partial power song and Scott needs something up tempo, or it will be one dull night. I’m not worried about Haley; I think she is likely to bring it.

  35. If Scotty can sing this song like he means it (and that’s one of his strengths) then the teenage girls will be voting like crazy. This can work for him.

  36. How is that supposed to make it better? He’s getting undressed in her room without the lights off while she’s sleeping. It’s probably best not to go there with your Mom. Then there is all the changing the world if your my girl.

Lol. My G-rated storyline was he came home from a hard night out (“stay out late at night and play my songs”) at the local teen club or wherever, and he was sneaking into his own room to get undressed with the lights off while mom lays sleeping. And she wakes up and he gives her a hug to cover this part

I come to her and say, it was all right, and I hold her tight

Sure, it’s a stretch ;) But for a teen of his age, some of the other alternatives  :?

cue the hormonal teenage girls saying “OMG NO LEAVE THE LIGHT ON!” and voting like crazy

Somehow I never really see Scotty as having a ton of hot teen appeal. Or at least, I don’t know that whatever there is of that will survive post AI for very long when he’s not on tv twice weekly. I envision his fanbase somehow as more adults who say what a nice young man, like the sorts of comfortable songs he chooses, and overlook the occasional awkwardness.

  37. Lol. My G-rated storyline was he came home from a hard night out “stay out late at night and play my songs” at the local teen club or wherever, and he was sneaking into his own room to get undressed with the lights off while mom lays sleeping. And she wakes up and he gives her a hug to cover this part

…Why would he have to get undressed to hug his mom?

  38. Safe, predictable and dull, just like how America likes their Idols it seems. This is your top two.

  39. I come to her and say, it was all right, and I hold her tight

    Erm, that looks like incest.

  40. If Scotty can sing this song like he means it (and that’s one of his strengths) then the teenage girls will be voting like crazy. This can work for him.

I agree, and even better if he sings it in a low key.

  41. Why would he have to get undressed to hug his mom?

Eeps. Just because it was “late at night” and he was going to bed.

Hopefully he had managed to get his PJs on before mom woke up and he gave her a hug, though ;) Otherwise that would really be quite the   storyline!

  42. I hate that choice for Lauren, it’s such a mom song. Also, not exactly the most current choice for Scotty.

OMG – me too. Seriously, now I fear that we’re in for another 5 years of this song being played for the Mother/Son dance at every wedding we’re forced to attend.

I don’t like Scotty’s song either. UGH – that song is way too old for him. With a creepy connotation. He could probably make it work for him, but it’s a terrible choice. And, an incredibly boring song.

  43. …Why would he have to get undressed to hug his mom?

Oh my, we really need to kill this train of thought right quick. I’m getting very creeped out :).

  44. Somehow I never really see Scotty as having a ton of hot teen appeal.

I just saw a short news clip of some cute girls around 16/17 who were at the airport last night when he came in. He touched the hand of one of the girls and she squealed with delight and freaked out. Expect that to happen a million times more today.

  45. They may have trouble with her; her repertoire is extensive.

Nina1, in a season when the theme was ‘everybody get in your lane and stay there’- the one who doesn’t is bound to stand out, as long as they bring the vocals.

And yes, it would be difficult to bus her with song choice, compared to the other two…interesting to see if they try.

    JMO.

  46. Both songs are beautiful songs but easy to sing. Kenny Rogers has no range to begin with so any of his songs would be easy. LeeAnn Womack has good range but didnt have to show it in that song. If they are handing out old songs. would love to hear Haley sing Black Velvet.

  47. Male cover of “I Hope You Dance”:

Ronan Keating – I Hope You Dance
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbJruWd6bmU

It looks like Ronan Keating also covered that Kenny Rogers’ song.

Ronan Keating – She Believes (In Me)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNvjnvfMe2Y

Is Haley also getting a song covered by Ronan Keating?

Ronan is the lead singer of Irish boyband Boyzone, also solo singer and a judge on X Factor Australia. I think he is managed by Louis Walsh, X Factor UK judge, known as boyband manager. Both of his boybands Westlife and Boyzone are big when it comes to covers.

  48. First thought re Kenny Rogers: NO, that would have been perfect for JAMES!!! OMG he could so have a moment rock-ballading it, if he kept the waterworks in check.

Next thought: What are they doing to Scotty? If he sang it like the Carole King song, it could work. But why not choose a similar storyteller ballad but from the 21st century, to at least make him sound current & relevant?

  49. Two slow songs for the kids. I hope Haley gets a barn-burner to set her apart.

Lauren, IMHO, is going to have a tough time with this choice. Her issue is connecting to songs and this one is about a mom singing to her daughter. I think she might be in trouble.

Another questionable song for Scotty as far as age-appropriateness.

Which is going to be Scotty’s problem once he hits the real world of country music. I guess maybe the tweens will squee about Scotty getting into their bed… but why does that give me the YUCK factor? He’s the kid who plays ball, the all American kid, the good kid… that’s his MO. Now he’s climbing into bed with a woman? It’s this back and forth between his image and what the usual country song is about that he will have to overcome.

It’s interesting…on last night’s headline edition someone commented on their local country DJ dismissing Scotty

The DJs at my local “new country” station were talking, this afternoon, about how disappointed they were that Durbin had been booted. They’d been hoping McCreery would go home, as they see his vocals as limited and his prospective niche in country already amply filled by others.

This is almost word for word what I heard on my local country station driving around doing errands yesterday. The DJ said “why would I play this kid when I already have Josh Turner?”

  50. Somehow I never really see Scotty as having a ton of hot teen appeal.

I have a 21 year old friend who wants to have hundreds of children with him. Hearing his “get undressed” lyric will just…. well… Think of what Adam Lambert does to his most rabid Glamberts, except to the 10th power. I don’t even want to imagine how that transfers to teenage girls.

I think Twitter provides some solid evidence that he does have teen appeal too.

  51. I actually think that the song choice is perfect for Lauren. Someone on this board mentioned that they keep pushing her to hit high notes when that’s not her strength – her soulfulness is her strength. Whoever you were, you were totally right.

Lauren’s best performance – IMHO – was last week when she did that Martina McBride song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uLtyzRgmyI

I Hope You Dance is the perfect choice.

As for She Believes in Me for Scotty …. all I can say is that I can already feel that it will make me LMAO!! Unless he changes the tempo or something. That song and those eyebrows. Oh my!

  52. I guess you could say Scotty is singing to his female dog, hmm. But then the dog would have to talk  (“And quietly she says how was your night?”)

idk, maybe you are just supposed to ignore all the lyrics for these Scotty song choices. Or assume he is somehow mystically projecting himself two or three decades into the future for his point of view.

  53. And yes, it would be difficult to bus her with song choice, compared to the other two…interesting to see if they try.

Oh, I think they will try.

  54. Think of what Adam Lambert does to his most rabid Glamberts, except to the 10th power.

    Un-possible.
    :)

  55. I guess you could say Scotty is singing to his female dog

Then he’ll just be singing to a bitch.

  56. If Scotty can sing this song like he means it (and that’s one of his strengths) then the teenage girls will be voting like crazy. This can work for him.

I agree, and even better if he sings it in a low key.

And, I’m wondering if that is the purpose for this song choice. To have him get into the character of the song. To see if he can sing it and emote it like he means it…making everyone forget he is just 17. LOL!!

  57. …Why would he have to get undressed to hug his mom?

Some of the ‘other’ kids at the club were smoking cigarettes, so he quickly switched into his Power Ranger jammies so she wouldn’t notice?

  58. I just saw a short news clip of some cute girls around 16/17 who were at the airport last night when he came in. He touched the hand of one of the girls and she squealed with delight and freaked out. Expect that to happen a million times more today.

Yes. And I saw the exact same news clips last year with Lee. These girls are not buying country albums. They are in love with a TV reality contestant. Once Scotty fades from the screen, these teens will move on to someone else. Just as they did with Lee.

  59. Another inappropriate song chosen. The lyrics are not what a 17 year old should be told to sing.

  60. Some of the ‘other’ kids at the club were smoking cigarettes, so he quickly switched into his Power Ranger jammies so she wouldn’t notice?

I don’t think so, he would’ve said that he put PJs on after getting undressed :P.

Yes. And I saw the exact same news clips last year with Lee. These girls are not buying country albums. They are in love with a TV reality contestant. Once Scotty fades from the screen, these teens will move on to someone else. Just as they did with Lee.

You may have a point, but Lee is also not that great a singer and not the same age as the people who probably did the same to Lee. I think those will benefit Scotty.

  61. I guess you could say Scotty is singing to his female dog, hmm. But then the dog would have to talk (“And quietly she says how was your night?”)

    “And quietly she says, Arroooooooooooooooooooh”?

  62. Tim McGraw has a nice version of She Believes in Me. My only problem is that its going to be hard to cut that song down to under 2 minutes. Only the first verse will get in (which is a good thing) and a chorus. Not much time for build up.

  63. This is almost word for word what I heard on my local country station driving around doing errands yesterday. The DJ said “why would I play this kid when I already have Josh Turner?”

I’ve seen him getting some favorable comment as well as the skepticism/lack of originality comments. That sort of thing hasn’t hurt him on AI. But in the real world when he puts an album out (presumably), I think it could well come into play.

As to whether he truly has a huge teen appeal that will last when he’s not on tv day to day, idk. (Can’t pretty much anyone on AI get people to squee over them in random encounters?)

For me, he’s ok looking but hardly dreamboat material and there are a lot of much better looking male country artists out there. Many of them in their 20s where they can more easily handle country song lyrics and bring some life experience into what they are doing.

  64. I have a 21 year old friend who wants to have hundreds of children with him. Hearing his “get undressed” lyric will just…. well… Think of what Adam Lambert does to his most rabid Glamberts, except to the 10th power. I don’t even want to imagine how that transfers to teenage girls.

    Um. Well. Gross.

Poor Scotty. What are we going to call these BSCs? If we have a new fantard group like the Glamberts we’ll need a name. Sigh.

  65. I guess you could say Scotty is singing to his female dog, hmm. But then the dog would have to talk  (“And quietly she says how was your night?”)

Again, we have to ask, why does he have to get undressed to hug his dog?

  66. I read someone on twitter mention they would like to see Haley perform “Black Velvet”. I would LOVE to see this, too!

  67. To be honest, you could say the same thing as those DJ’s about pretty much any Idol contestant these days. Why should I play Scotty/Haley/Lauren when I already have Josh Turner/Adele/Carrie Underwood? The fans on the show will say otherwise, but many DJs these days are just tired of Idols and don’t want to be stuck playing the music of the new crop every year.

  68. “Black Velvet” may be too soon for Haley after Crystal performed it only last year.

I’m not sure it would be the best thing to get her to advance, but I’m hoping against hope one of Haley’s choices this week will be something light and jazzy. We’ve been catching glimpses of that side of her (especially in her first results-night duet with Casey), and it’s my favorite side of her voice, but lately she’s been going for the power vocals every song.

  69. You may have a point, but Lee is also not that great a singer and not the same age as the people who probably did the same to Lee. I think those will benefit Scotty.

Did we all agree somewhere that Scotty has a stellar voice? I must have missed that conversation. ;-)

He can sing on tune (you’re right, that does elevate him over Lee). But he has limited range (at least what I’ve seen so far), and limited… how can I say this.. inflection. This is why you get the comment that all his songs sound the same. He’s good at getting the story across, but half the time, I’m asleep by the time the story ends.

Wow. Maybe Scotty could put out a record of bedtime songs.

  70. Again, we have to ask, why does he have to get undressed to hug his dog?

Because it’s uncomfortable to sleep in one’s clothes?

I envision the dog sleeping on one of those animal-shaped pillow shams that kids are supposed to use to hide their jammies when they make the bed.

As far as the dog talking… lots of people hold both sides of the convo with their pets. Admittedly, my cat’s side is usually: “Eff that. No wait, I can’t — I’ve been neutered.”

  71. I almost think it doesn’t matter what anyone sings at this point; people have chosen who they want to win.

  72. Again, we have to ask, why does he have to get undressed to hug his dog?

    hmm…

I stay out late at night and play my songs
And sometimes all the nights can be so long
And it’s good when I finally make it home, all alone
While she lays dreaming, I try to get undressed without the light

Should he not get undressed for bed when he “finally makes it home” “late at night”? He must be really tired after all that late-night song playin’ ;)

I envision the dog sleeping on one of those animal-shaped pillow shams that kids are supposed to use to hide their jammies when they make the bed.

    aww

  73. Oh, I think they will try.

So, someone should be polishing up the “Hit Me Up” Happy Feet Memorial Plaque for Haley?

Could be. But in that season, the sabotage was redundant, and totally overkill.

This is a person who knows her way around bending a song, which keeps it interesting, instead of straight karaoke.

Eh. The Country genre often bores me to sleep – Two of them in the finale, and both of them chillrun, would be Ambien squared – for me. Others MMV, of course.

I’d root for her on that basis alone, even if I didn’t like her voice, and appreciate her range, and the choices she makes…which I do.

    JMO. Of Course.

  74. The fans on the show will say otherwise, but many DJs these days are just tired of Idols and don’t want to be stuck playing the music of the new crop every year.

Luckily, the DJs got a break from having to play new Idol music last year, so maybe the will be in the mood to play music from the S10 crop again.

  75. The judges are supposedly all abour interpretting a song’s lyrics. Did they even look at the lyrics and their appropriateness sor someone 16 and 17? Another example of take the big bucks and do nothing.

  76. Kind of bland from the Judges IMHO. I hope someone picks ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ by The Beatles for Haley. The telling picks will be Jimmy’s.

  77. Safe, predictable and dull, just like how America likes their Idols it seems. This is your top two.

    Isn’t that the truth.

Singing in tune better than Lee is enough for me, but he’s got storytelling down better too. And, if anything, I’d rather be asleep than hear a cat struggling to hit a note. But Scotty never could put me to sleep. YMMV.

I’m not sure if Haley’s song choice will be better. It seems like it’ll just be…. there. I see them bussing her with her song choice.

  79. Nina1 says:

    05/14/2011 at 10:53 am

I almost think it doesn’t matter what anyone sings at this point; people have chosen who they want to win.

You are probably right. If Crystal’s stellar performances, during Top 2 last year, couldn’t bring in the votes for her… song choice at this point probably doesn’t matter.

ITA. It’s harder and harder for an idol to break through. You do have to bring something unique… which is hard when you’re just a kid. Being a kid means copying your elders until you figure out who you are. That takes some time.

Combine that with the Jimmy’s of the this world out to mold these kids into whatever he thinks will sell.. and you’ve got a hard road ahead for all three.

I think Haley might have an outside shot at breaking through because she has the balls to make the music she wants and she does have the musical background. But it’s going to be tough.

  81. I almost think it doesn’t matter what anyone sings at this point; people have chosen who they want to win.

This is a good point. I actually chose who I wanted to win (and be runner-up) at the beginning of the voting rounds. My runner up shifted a tiny bit, but my winner has remained there the entire competition. Now I just have to vote until my fingers fall off >_>.

  82. Oh, jammasta. NO!!! How could you have done this to me??? Yucky yucky yucky.

Another one bites the dust! Actually the only one so far >_>.

  83. If they were going for Kenny Rogers for Scotty I’d have preferred Coward Of The County or even The Gambler. At least those are story songs. Choosing a romantic crooning type song for Scotty shows a misunderstanding of what his strengths are.

The way Scotty vexes people is starting to be part of why I enjoy him :P I just think he’s one of those guys where people including me can’t explain why he’s popular but he is. IF (big if) he is truly out ahead in the votes then I bet that’ll translate in the real world more than I would expect.

LaurenA will do well with I Hope You Dance but it’s not a song that lends itself to a dynamic vocal or stage performance and from that point of view I think it’s a bad choice. I think LaurenA and Scotty will pick better songs for themselves.

The blandness of these 2 choices should give people hope it’s Steven picking for Haley. Then again I’ve never believed these are really judges picks, more like producer picks maybe with a little judge input.

  84. I almost think it doesn’t matter what anyone sings at this point; people have chosen who they want to win.

You are probably right. If Crystal’s stellar performances, during Top 2 last year, couldn’t bring in the votes for her… song choice at this point probably doesn’t matter.

Well, you also had the over the top pimping last year to add to the mix. I do think when Simon talked, the public listened. I don’t see anyone on the judges table this year that has that quality.

  85. Did I miss Haley’s song pick? And if I didn’t- what the hell are they waiting for? To me, that seriously doesn’t bode well for her.

BUT- I have a feeling a ton of Lauren supporters will swing over to Scotty this week (because after all, the teeny boppers think he’s so damn cute, lol), and Haley will sneak into the finale. And if that saves me from being tortured by an all teen, all country finale, it works for me.

Hmmm… had to just add this- considering that the announcement of the song pick hasn’t been made yet, I am almost entirely convinced it’s Steven choosing for her – I doubt he gets up before noon Cali time, lol.

  86. Neither of those songs are appropriate for Scotty’s and Lauren’s age or to their circumstance. Neither one of them has lived long enough to be able to project those lyrics in any believable way. Nice songs and all, but you’d think the judges would have taken their youth into account. Well, obviously I’m disappointed they are stuck with those songs. At least they will be singing 3 songs total for the night (thank goodness)!

  87. After listening to Scotty’s pick, I have to say that its not very age appropriate. That could be a problem with the casual voters, particularly the Bilbe Belters.

  88. Did I miss Haley’s song pick? And if I didn’t- what the hell are they waiting for? To me, that seriously doesn’t bode well for her.

Nope, Haley’s song choice is still unknown.

I hope your feeling is right. I love me some country and teens, but two in the finale = boring. Besides, Lauren’s a bigger threat to Scotty than Haley is. And I think if Haley gets in the finale, it’ll give them time to make Scotty/Haley seem like brother and sister so people won’t think of her so negatively anymore (You have no idea how many people in my family have said she was a b*tch after her comments on Wednesday).

  89. I always felt that Simon chose his songs for contestants to sing. Less sure about the others.

  90. The way Scotty vexes people is starting to be part of why I enjoy him I just think he’s one of those guys where people including me can’t explain why he’s popular but he is. IF (big if) he is truly out ahead in the votes then I bet that’ll translate in the real world more than I would expect.

But just because someone is popular with votes on a reality TV show does not mean they can replicate that success in the real world. Taylor Hicks and Lee Dewyze never fell to the bottom during their seasons. Neither Ruben Studdard or Kris Allen were the top sellers of their seasons.

And of the 9 second place finishers, 7 are no longer with their original Idol labels.

And Chris Daughtry, Kelli Pickler, Jennifer Hudson, Constatine Maroulis never even made it to the Top 3.

IKR? What are they thinking? So inappropriate for his age! I am not even a Scotty fan and I feel sorry that he has to sing this on national TV.

  92. Did I miss Haley’s song pick? And if I didn’t- what the hell are they waiting for? To me, that seriously doesn’t bode well for her.

Isn’t she in a different time zone than they are? I expect we’ll hear her song choice about a hour later than Scotty’s and Lauren’s.

  93. I just had an evil thought- I would love NOTHING more if Steven chose “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” for Haley- and that song would suit her voice.

  94. Ugh. I wouldn’t have picked that song for Scotty but I think he’ll make the best of it.

“I Hope You Dance” for Lauren imo is a little too sleepy and too predictable. The girl obviously can sing and I wish they would have given her more of a vocal challenge.

I could easily see the bus sort of coming for Scotty next week but I think it’s in full gear for Haley. I hope Scotty can make it to the final. I’ll be voting till my fingers fall off too. It almost makes me shudder to think what has been picked for Haley regardless of who the judge is.

Kirsten and jammasta you two are just too much! LOL

  95. So we’ll know Haley’s choice soon, now! Though I have a feeling come next wednesday nobody is getting criticized … they might not wanna take any chances of it back firing like before, lol

  96. Haley’s visit to downtown Chicago and the photo op on the ledge at Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) ran long so she’s delayed.

She got to AT&T in Deer Park 10-15 mins ago.

  97. After listening to Scotty’s pick, I have to say that its not very age appropriate. That could be a problem with the casual voters, particularly the Bilbe Belters.

I think they will just change up the lyrics a bit and he will be fine. It is otherwise a nice tune.

  98. I have a feeling come next wednesday nobody is getting criticized…

Lispill – then maybe they could all sing the same song – in different keys – “You Are So Beautiful To Me” – Heh. The judges’ theme song, after all.

  99. alterego7: But just because someone is popular with votes on a reality TV show does not mean they can replicate that success in the real world.

I guess you missed the part where I said I bet the votes would translate in his case “more than I would expect”. Since that might be hard to understand what I was saying is I’m aware votes don’t always translate in the real world and I can see where Scotty might be challenged to make that happen but I also think he’s got something in him (that I didn’t see in other people who had trouble translating their AI popularity to real world popularity) that could enable him to surprise people. Including me.

I like all the t3. I don’t like any of them enough to have a favorite and I’d be cool with any combo of them as the f2 and any one of them as a winner. I recognize Scotty’s got the weakest voice out of the t3 but he is IMO far and away the best interpreter out of the t3. LaurenA IMO is the best chance for a big out of the box success and she’ll grow a lot after the show, Haley’s the most versatile and best singer, and Scotty’s the most ready as an artist and personality to set up for a long term career.

I fear for Haley most as far as the label but I like that she’s a survivor and a fighter. I worry about LaurenA getting signed to Interscope and a Nashville label and getting lots of conflicting input but if she’s just signed to a Nashville label then she’ll be fine. I like all of them for their taste in music and think it bodes well for them to the degree they’d get to pick their songs for their albums if they’re signed. I think it’ll be interesting seeing what happens with all of them after the show.

  100. I’m disappointed in Lauren’s song. Not only it is kind of sleepy ( only the chorus is OK), but I think it is a difficult song to sing.
If she is not careful, all the parts before the chorus can sound flat. Agh !

Scotty’s song is much better, I think. I can see him singing that, even though, Windmills, you are absolutely right that The Gambler is a much better and more fun song.

I feel for the idols. What can you do. I hope all three pick a much better song for themselves. At least they will have 2 more songs to sing (for better or for worse).

ETA: WOW, I just saw Haley’s song. Is AI going to bleep her ?
It is either going to be so awesome, or a screaming train wreck.
It won’t be boring, though. It could be Haley’s Heartless.

  101. They’re not going to tell Haley what she has to sing until show night, and the key she will have to sing it in will be a surprise.

  102. Aha! Haley got a song where I actually own the cd! I think his works for her!

(Although she is guaranteed to sound “shouty.”)

  103. Interested in seeing what Haley does to this song. I’m still hoping she doesn’t do three belters in one night though…

  104. Not that I hate any of the 3 songs, but, I don’t feel any of them fit the contestant. Don’t understand what they’re trying to bring out in the performances with these picks.

  105. Haley got the best song. Looks like they may be trying for an all girls finale with Lauren winning.

It is a modern song that most people will recognize and it fits her recent take-no-guff persona. I think Randy picked it. He was generally the best at picking relatively rcent songs that suited the contestant. Did Crystal sing this one with Alanis last year on the finale? Is this a dog whistle to her fans? Here is your chance to right last year’s wrongs.

  106. The song interpretations in this thread are hilarious! My sides hurt from laughing.

But seriously, I don’t really need the singer’s age and experience to match that of the song’s narrator, as long as they can deliver a believable performance. Otherwise, think of all the wrinkled rockers still singing of young love. Besides, a lot of people say Scotty sounds 40 (never quite got that), so for them, the more mature lyrics might fit the voice.

I mean, a singer is like an actor, right? No one expects an actor to have necessarily lived the experience they portray. Young actresses portray rape victims or teen mothers without having lived anything close to it. 25 year olds play virginal teens long past being believable as virginal themselves.

I don’t expect the singer (or saxophonist or pianist or drummer) to be all that personally connected to the lyrics of a performance. They just have to deliver it convincingly. I don’t sit there during a performance thinking about each musicians personal history.

  107. Boring!! I know this would NEVER happen, but I would love to hear Scotty sing INDIAN OUTLAW! That would make my day. lol

  108. Mj just posted Haley’s song. And, it makes me lol. They may not be trying to bus her, but by giving her that profanity laced, angsty tune, I think they may be trying to convince us she’s an asshole. That’s one angry song. I look forward to hearing her sing it, because it is a great song. But, I’m not sure she’ll come off all that likable while doing so.

  109. God, these judges’ song choices SUCK. The only entertainment I’ve gotten so far is the “undressed” talk.

Haley’s song is a little too edgy for her. Scotty’s and Lauren’s are too safe.

  110. wow whomever chose that alanis song for haley really must think really slutty of her..lmaoo that song is a uhmmm yeah…lol

  111. Haley’s judges pick: Never heard of it. Just listened to it. “Is she perverted like me?” OK, she sings about making love on the couch one week and admits she’s a pervert the next. LOL!!!

  112. GREAT choice for Haley…she will KILL that song and it requires a singer
Safe chocie for Scotty…he will sing it well
Lauren…meh…love that song, and she won’t be able to do it justice…

  113. Haley’s choice (for me, anyway) = ugh. I never heard this song in my life. Talk about singing a song that people are familiar with….

    Kidding I hope?
That song was everywhere for over a year.

  114. Ah, but how will Haley sanitize the line about the theater?

(Crystal sang “will she go down with you to the theater”, instead of the raunchy lyric)

  115. Are they planning to bleep out half of Haley’s performance? Because surely she is not going to be expected to stand on that stage singing about going down on someone in a theater, or “are you thinking of me when you fuck her?” … Who the hell picked THAT song?!

ETA: I had no idea someone had already performed in on Idol (Crystal). Still hate the choice!

  116. I love Haley’s song but not sure it is quite her…wtf?

She needs to refrain from growling. If she just sings, she’ll be fine.

  117. Haley is running an hour late for some reason. She just arrived at the AT&T store about 20 minutes ago. That’s why it took so long to get her song.

I don’t know I’m with Spenser on this one. It could be hard for Haley to come off as likeable while she sings this song.

It may not matter though. I still think she’s going to make it into the final due to vote splitting.

  118. So two sleepy songs and one that has to be edited within an inch of it’s life to even play on tv. Okay. . .

  119. by giving her that profanity laced, angsty tune, I think they may be trying to convince us she’s an asshole. That’s one angry song.

Yah, my only concern for it is that it will accentuate those vocal qualities that most annoy people. Hopefully, she will counterpoint it with a very gentle, loving song. If Iovine chooses the same type of song as this, it could be bad for her.

Happily, I prefer her not to win, but to place; I think that will provide the best career.

  120. Given these three song choices, they are clearly not throwing Haley under the bus.

  121. I think at this point, it doesn’t even matter who sings what, etc. Viewers for the most part have already made up their decisions. But will those viewers turn out in droves for their favorites? Is Scotty having never been in the bottom work against him (fan complacency and people tired of the early front runner). Will Haley, the underdog prevail, as Kris Allen did in Season 8?

  122. Kidding I hope?
That song was everywhere for over a year.

    Fifteen years ago.

  123. I think it’s a surprisingly good and powerful choice for Haley. Hey, no penguins! Nice contrast to the snooze-fest of the other two. Crystal and Alannis KILLED that at the finale last year. And it channels anger in a wonderfully provocative way. I have to think that Steve Tyler chose it.

But – who picked for whom? Do we know?

  124. I do think the pick for Haley is a bit WTF? I’m sure she will sing it well but they talk about how she doesn’t know who she is as an artist and then they give her this song? Confusing. I like Haley best when she’s singing jazzy soulful songs so I hope her personal pick reflects that.

Lauren and Scotty’s songs are too safe.

Honestly I don’t like any of the judges song picks.

  125. I’m not sure whether I think this is a bus for Haley or genius. It’s a great song, but not really Idol friendly. It could be a Moment, or as big a bus as Happy Feet. We’ll see.

  126. Haley’s not winning this thing anyway. So, I think she should just go out with a bang and sing the lyrics about blowjobs & fucking. they can bleep her :).

I bet Haley’s mom is happy that she got the slut pick lol. I’m sure I’d be thrilled if it were my kid.

  127. Excellent choice for Haley! It’s the crazy psycho ex-girlfriend song. Maybe she’ll continue to take Gaga’s advice and go for the psycho look again. It worked last week.

    Feeling for Lauren, though. Booorring

Scotty will just do what Scotty does best – look like Alfred E. Neumann with a dose of George Bush, hold his mic in a way that makes it impossible to hear him at times and gets lots of praise for it.

  128. by giving her that profanity laced, angsty tune, I think they may be trying to convince us she’s an asshole. That’s one angry song.

Yes, thinking about it, although I like it, this song isn’t well suited to Idol.

  129. Don’t be silly . If they gave her any song, they are throwing her under the bus. If they give her the pimp spot it is just so people will remember how bad she was. Got it?

  130. Not a good song choice for Haley, imo.

I like the song choice for Lauren.

Don’t know the song Scotty is gonna sing.

  131. But – who picked for whom? Do we know?

I’m actually guessing J.Lo picked that one for Haley — she’s the one who keeps pushing for Haley to sing well known songs.

  132. I just checked out the video of Crystal and Alanis singing that song last year … they only sang one verse, which is how they got away with it. How on earth is Haley supposed to edit the rest of that? And I agree, it’s an angry, screechy song … Crystal sounded really screechy on it, so expect those comments. (Although Alanis didn’t sound quite so screechy, so Haley could try it more her way.)

Steven HAS to be the one who chose for Haley, because he wouldn’t have thought twice about the lyrics being inappropriate for Idol.

  133. I love Haley’s song but not sure it is quite her

I agree. Maybe she will surprise me and be able to pull it off.

It may not matter though. I still think she’s going to make it into the final due to vote splitting.

I certainly won’t be doing that next week but I am 100% sure that some will be.

  134. Haley’s not winning this thing anyway. So, I think she should just go out with a bang and sing the lyrics about blowjobs & fucking. they can bleep her .

Wouldn’t disturb me. I hope she chooses a true jazzy number, though, to emphasize that this is theatrical.

  135. HermeticallySealed – I agree, Haley’s tween fans (read – the ones that vote the most) didn’t even know this song … they were all talking about looking it up on youtube.

I think the choice is weird, but I think she can do really well with it either way, and I also don’t think it matters that much at this stage, unless one of the really bombs their song.

  136. At least Haley’s song is better than that lame-ass, ancient Kenny Rogers tune. I can’t wait to find out which judge picked that one. I think Scotty got the short end of the stick here.

  137. You Oughta Know was the lead off single from Jagged Little Pill which sold 33 million copies worldwide. The song won two Grammys.

  138. I agree songsungblue Steven picked Haley’s song. Still not sure it’s the right song for her. I prefer Haley with a more bluesy/jazzy sound. Hmm maybe she can slow it down a little and change it up?

  139. These song choices are very o_O Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot.

I don’t care how well Scotty can interpret a song, it will be quite cringe worthy seeing a clean cut 17 year-old apple-pie-and-baseball kid try to wrangle She Believes In Me. Bad call, judges. Also? Boring song.

I Hope You Dance is just as bad for Lauren Alaina. She already struggles to connect to what she’s singing. Also? Sleeper of a song. *yawn* Bad call No. 2, judges.

You Oughta Know is a good song but not very Haley IMO. Not only that, but Crystal did this with Alanis last year for the finale soooo … this gets another big Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot from me. Also? Lots of dirty lyrics.

And that’s a hat trick of bad calls for the judges’ picks.

Maybe they don’t want any of them to win?

  140. I think that’s an excellent choice for Haley…Crystal did it well last year and I think Haley can put an even different spin on it.

Too bad Scotty didn’t get “I Hope You Dance.” There’s nothing I love hearing about more in a song than “nuts of wonder.”

  141. Haley’s not winning this thing anyway. So, I think she should just go out with a bang and sing the lyrics about blowjobs & fucking. they can bleep her :) .

I bet Haley’s mom is happy that she got the slut pick lol. I’m sure I’d be thrilled if it were my kid.

LOL! Should could sing the blow job part acapella. It’s a nice way to keep the focus on the lyrics.

  142. I don’t know I’m with Spenser on this one. It could be hard for Haley to come off as likeable while she sings this song.

It may not matter though. I still think she’s going to make it into the final due to vote splitting.

I agree, but I wonder if people are now sticking to their favorites rather than vote splitting. At this stage in the competition, vote splitting can be damn near fatal for the contestant.

I kinda wanted to hear Scotty’s or Haley’s interpretation of Blackout by Muse. Although Scotty is quite young, I think he could’ve sold the “life’s too short” message of the song, but at the same time, it’s wild and out-of-the-box for him (I love those kinds of song choices), but it’s really beautiful and I think his storytelling ability could have brought a powerful interpretation to that song. It would also probably have shown his classical abilities he may have achieved in choir, since it’s a very classical sounding song.

Haley could have been powerful with it as well if she sang it straight. I’m thinking of her performance of Blue as a reference point for this song, for some reason.

  143. Don’t be silly . If they gave her any song, they are throwing her under the bus. If they give her the pimp spot it is just so people will remember how bad she was. Got it?

If we’re looking at these choices I would think the bus was coming for Scotty. Lauren gets the emotional sweet song, Haley get the vocal power angry song. Scotty’s judges pick a little weird to say the least. I don’t want to hear him sing about geting into someone’s bed, it’s just odd. You oughta know isn’t very Idol friendly and I do think even though Haley will sing it well I don’t think this is the right song for her or fits her musically at all. I was hoping for some Joss Stone or Duffy.

  144. Last year I think people were going WTF with some of the judges picks too, but in the end the judges’ picks ended up for the most part better than the contestants’ picks.

  145. That song was everywhere for over a year.

    Fifteen years ago.

More like ten years ago, wasn’t it?

  146. So two sleepy songs and one that has to be edited within an inch of it’s life to even play on tv. Okay. . .

HermeticallySealed – They have the edited version from last season that Crystal sang w/Alanis Morisette – JIC anyone forgot the tune. Unless Haley wants to edit a different verse? Maybe the ‘fingernails’ one? Heh.

Looks like someone picked a lane for Haley – Angry.

Retread from Last season, retread from the beginning of this season, and age inappropriate song from 1978.

The level of imagination in these choices is staggering.

OK – I guess it’s Jimmy’s turn to show his musical perspicacity and understanding of who these three really are, and how to stretch their boundaries. Could it be worse? lol.

(Uh oh – shouldn’t have said that.)

  147. Crystal did a great job with this song last year on the Finale. I think Haley can be great! However, it is still another WTF? song choice. The judges see her as bluesy and like a Joss Stone and they pick this angsting song??? May be the worst song choices ever!

  148. I actually think Lauren got the worst song. She is the only one that conceivably needs to prove anything and she only has one good week behind her. She needed a stand-out song.

  149. For those who don’t know the lyrics

I want you to know, that I am happy for you
I wish nothing but the best for you both
    An older version of me
    Is she perverted like me?
Would she go down on you in a theater?
    Does she speak eloquently
And would she have your baby?
I’m sure she’d make a really excellent mother

1-‘Cause the love that you gave that we made
Wasn’t able to make it enough for you
    To be open wide, No
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me
You’d hold me until you died
Till you died, but you’re still alive

2-And I’m here, to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It’s not fair, to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
    You, you, you oughta know

You seem very well, things look peaceful
I’m not quite as well, I thought you should know
Did you forget about me, Mr. Duplicity?
I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner
It was a slap in the face
    How quickly I was replaced
And are you thinking of me when you f… her?
    (rpt 1,2)

    Ohh… aah… ahh… ahh…

‘Cause the joke that you laid in the bed
That was me and I’m not gonna fade
As soon as you close your eyes, and you know it
And every time I scratch my nails
Down someone else’s back I hope you feel it
    Well, can you feel it?
    (rpt 2, 2…)

  150. Last year I think people were going WTF with some of the judges picks too, but in the end the judges’ picks ended up for the most part better than the contestants’ picks.

Good point, but at the very least we had one pretty good song choice last year with Ellen’s pick for Crystal.

So does anyone think one of those judges will tell Haley that she sang that song to Randy just because it seems like the “F*** YOU” song? My God. Scotty with the possibility of singing that song to his mom and Haley with the “Are you thinking of me when you f… her” is just too much horrific for me. What’s next, Lauren actually accidentally says “Nuts of wonder?”

Damn me and my mind in the gutter.

  151. SpenserJ: Haley’s not winning this thing anyway. So, I think she should just go out with a bang and sing the lyrics about blowjobs & fucking. they can bleep her

LOL! I have to say, in all honesty, that would be AWESOME.

  152. I agree, but I wonder if people are now sticking to their favorites rather than vote splitting. At this stage in the competition, vote splitting can be damn near fatal for the contestant.

Exactly. I’ll never forget Ken Warwick’s elimination day interview the day Melinda was eliminated. He mentioned early that afternoon something about by looking at the voting patterns that it appeared that some votes were being split between Jordin and Melinda and that things appeared to be in Blake’s favor which turned out to be the case and Melinda of course got the boot.

I’m almost preparing myself for the possibility of Scotty getting the boot this week but I hope it doesn’t happen.

  153. I see that most of the people here think that “You Oughta Know” is a good song choice for Haley and I agree. I hope she does the acoustic version – much better and prettier, even though it is an angry song. Crystal Bowersox and Alanis Morisette performed this together last year on the finale show and it was a GREAT performance.

  154. These songs suck. I can’t believe they couldn’t pick some songs that are a little more current. At least Haley’s is a change of pace.

  155. I Hope You Dance is exactly the kind of song Lauren NEEDS to be singing to get away from the anticlimactic songs she’s been singing without any “big notes” that show she has some real pipes. It’s a good choice, but she might just lack the voice to pull it off.

  156. These song choices are very o_O Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot.

Totally agree and love the comment!!

  157. I am really happy about Haley’s choice, because I think it is the song (out of the three given) that has the most potential to be a moment. Obviously Haley is not going to sing it as it was performed by Alanis. She is going to (or, at least, really really should) change it up. And taking a heavy rock song like that and changing it to fit Haley’s style could be really cool.

The song is not as vulgar as some people are saying. To make it safe for TV, she just has to change the theater line and not sing the verse with the F-word. Easy.

And I don’t think Haley’s song is that emotionally different than the Adele song she sang…both are really angry songs (though completely different genres, obviously). If she could give You Oughta Know the Adele treatment somehow, it could be fascinating, and a huge moment for Haley.

  158. “I Hope You Dance” is a odd choice for Lauren, considering it is a mother singing to her daughter, but the song is beautiful and Lauren will sing it well, IMO. If you listen to her studio versions of the songs so far, her voice is the most radio ready of all of the contestants – those still here and those already gone. It should be good. Hopefully her pick and Iovine’s pick will show other sides of Lauren. She really does have a beautiful voice.

  159. These song choices are very o_O Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot.

Not WTF at all. We’re being given our stock characters by the oh-so-wise judges.

Alaina = madonna (the religious one, not the singing one)
    Reinhart = whore
    McCreery = hard-workin’ aspirin’ musician

ETA: These are not my opinions of the singers themselves.
Also ETA: basis of using these terms for portrayal of the girls.

  160. All three have dedicated fans that are going to vote for them no matter what they sing or how they sing it. For the rest of the voters, I think they will consider a package of all three songs and vote accordingly. ‘Course, if anyone has a ‘moment’ or a ‘disaster’, all bets are off IMO.

I have no idea if Haley’s song is a good choice but I am sure that it will not be boring.

I am surprisingly enthused about next week’s show and from the hits this thread is getting, ratings and voting could be a new high.

  161. After looking at these choices, I wouldn’t be surprise if Jimmy’s picks are the better songs for the contestants.

  162. Alaina = madonna (the religious one, not the singing one)
    Reinhart = whore
    McCreery = hard-workin’ aspirin’ musician

OMG- I am crying I am laughing so hard.

I just googled the release date of You Oughta Know- it was 1995- I feel better now for not remembering it, lol. (What can I say? I’m OLD).

  163. I absolutely love their choice for Haley. I think it suits her perfectly. She can go down that road after the show, you know, the Kelly Clarkson pop anthems about angry girlfriends and sh*tty relationships. I can imagine Haley’s album to have rock, blues, and jazz influences.

  164. More like ten years ago, wasn’t it?

It was a single from her 1995 album, Jagged Little Pill, so more like 16.

Looking at DI (I know, not the most accurate thing ever), it seems like nobody in the past few seasons has been as dominating as Scotty has with a wide margin between him and second place almost every week. Melinda started to appear low on DI after a while. I’d say he’s almost a lock but it’s not time to become complacent if you’re a fan of his.

I dunno, I thought Simon’s choice for Lee was really stupid last year but it worked somehow, so we’ll see this year.

  166. All these three song choices are going to do is solidify existing fan bases, so in the end it is really not that big a deal.

  167. I just figured out why they picked this song for Haley (hope she goes acoustic.) The song will depict her as angry and not likeable. Plays right into the Idol hand. It will involve growling. Then the judges will criticize her for growling and yelling and being angry, like Earth Song!

  168. i hope Scotty does Ronan Keating’s version of the song and sing it in his upper register like he did in You’ve Got a Friend…

    The song suits Haley’s personality….angry, feisty…

Still wished James could have made finals….could have been more exciting…

  169. Geez these judges are pathetic and completely transparent. You can be guaranteed these “judge’s choice” picks came directly from Uncle Nigel’s notes, just like every other comment they’ve made this year.

Lauren – I Hope You Dance fits perfectly into her season long narrative of timid young girl “blossoming” every week on the stage into a country-pop superstar princess. Tough song maybe, but it’s right in her wheelhouse with her sweet upper register and twang.

Scotty – She Believes in Me – I’m sure there will be multiple, gratuitous shots of both grandmas and his mother throughout. A perfect storyteller’s song which is Scotty’s strength. It will melt the hearts of all of Idol’s most important voting bloc and secure his place in the final.

Haley – You Oughta Know? An angry, shouty song for Idol’s “angry, shouty” singer. Not going to win her any fans from the group that already thinks she has a bad attitude. It’s definitely not the right song for Haley. Has she sung anything remotely close to this all season? Crystal was good on it, but I’ve never once looked at Haley and thought of Crystal.

Maybe not an outright bus, but once again, these song choices reaffirm the TPTB’s season long narratives for these contestants. Lauren as developing superstar, Scotty as all American momma’s boy, and Haley as angry outsider to the preordained Country Idol Finale.

Can’t wait to see what Jimmy’s song choices are, most likely more of the same.

  170. This poor Haley thing is starting to sound like a broken record. Having said that, I think this is going to be a very boring semi final and finale. My other least favorite was season six, but this may top it. Good singers don’t necessarily make good shows when there is not much “it” factor. I really think Scotty will win and I’m okay with that.

  171. I’m not sure whether I think this is a bus for Haley or genius.

IKR, This song is kickass good. I’m just not sure Haley is edgy enough to pull it off. The acoustic version sounds great too.

  172. Another point. I think this pick for Haley is more like choosing “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” for David Cook, and the choices for Lauren and Scotty is like Archuleta’s “And So It Goes”. Cook’s song was a moment for him because it was more unexpected (the rock guy singing a folk song by Roberta Flack), but Archuleta’s was right in his wheelhouse…and as a result, it was less memorable.

Scotty and Lauren singing popular (and somewhat sleepy…in the case of Scotty’s song, at least) country songs will be completely expected, and probably very pleasant. Haley singing this big alternative rock song, perhaps in her own style, will be much more interesting, and that’s good for her.

  173. IMO, Scotty got the worst pick with Kenny Rogers – “She Believes In Me.” There is no way he can emotionally connect with the lyrics. That might not matter to the people who are voting for him though. Who knows.

Now, the same could said of Lauren’s song, but if she approaches it as singing to a friend or a little sister, she can definitely connect to the lyrics and I truly believe she will do a great job with the song.

As I already posted, with the right arrangement, “You Oughta Know” could be a brilliant choice for Haley and I bet it WAS Tyler who chose it.

  174. At least Lauren and Haley are singing songs that they know. When Scotty got his text about his song he said he didn’t even think he knew it. And neither will the teenage girls that vote a lot for him. I will love it though!

  175. I’m confused by this choice for Haley. Don’t get me wrong, I love Alanis and THIS song, but I don’t see how it can work for Haley’s style of singing. I REALLY hope that I’m wrong.

  176. Haley’s pick is intentional polar opposite to the country teens’ choices, as daring as AI can stand daring songs. If the producers could have gotten away with it, they would have probably chosen Lily Allen’s “fuck you” or Adam’s “For Your entertainment” :)

  177. I dunno, I thought Simon’s choice for Lee was really stupid last year but it worked somehow, so we’ll see this year.

I thought Simon was nuts picking that song for Lee but heck, but what did I know? heh

ETA: If I remember correctly, Alanis wrote that song about her ex Dave Coulier who played Joey on Full House. She really made a statement with it. heh
I can’t say that this song won’t work for Haley. She will either pick up new fans and they will eat it up or it will be a disaster. I don’t mean it in the sense that it won’t be good but with her personality being an issue with some folks then it could easily backfire. I guess we will find out next Thursday with the results.

I kind of think the judges may be extra careful with what they say this week too to all 3 of them as well.

  178. Scotty – She Believes in Me – I’m sure there will be multiple, gratuitous shots of both grandmas and his mother throughout.

MY EYES THE GOGGLES DO NOTHING D:

If this happens and he keeps the undressing line I might be traumatized.

IKR, This song is kickass good. I’m just not sure Haley is edgy enough to pull it off. The acoustic version sounds great too.

It depends on what she does with it. Acoustic and bluesy = genius pick!

  180. Steven HAS to be the one who chose for Haley, because he wouldn’t have thought twice about the lyrics being inappropriate for Idol.

Agree. Nobody else will pick that song for an Idol performance.

  181. It’s definitely not the right song for Haley. Has she sung anything remotely close to this all season?

As I mentioned, I think “Rolling in the Deep” is a similar song in terms of theme. Haley had to tap into the same kinds of emotions for the Adele song. If Haley could take Adele and Alanis and merge their styles somehow, it could be awesome.

  182. IMO, Scotty got the worst pick with Kenny Rogers – “She Believes In Me.” There is no way he can emotionally connect with the lyrics.

That presumes he has never been in love. Or even heavy like. He is old enough to have experienced both; I ain’t buying the “To Mom” stuff.

  183. I wonder if the judges who picked the songs get to work with the contestants?

I do think Tyler picked Haley’s song. – Tyler has probably the best over all knowledge of music and rock/pop rock on the panel.

Randy picked Scotty’s song – Randy seems to know a lot about country. I think Scotty will sing the song well, but it is soooooooooo dated.

Which leaves JLO for Lauren. I think JLO has terrific style so I hope she also gives Lauren a bit of a makeover.

  184. rbidol: Haley singing this big alternative rock song, perhaps in her own style, will be much more interesting, and that’s good for her.

I hope she does do it in her own style. Maybe bring it down a notch or two and go acoustic? IDK, with such a short period of time to sort it all out, I’ve got my fingers crossed for her.

  185. I think these are pretty good choices. I you tubed Scotty’s and it’s an unchallenging bore, but fits well with all his other ballads. Haley’s is a great song. I just heard it yesterday on the radio and it still sounds good. Maybe they are going with the story line that Haley is an angry bitch which fits the song. I’m not that familiar with Lauren’s but it sounds the easiest song to connect with and should do well.

  186. The bus is coming for Mr. McCreery with this song choice.

This Kenny Rogers song is a dusty old moldy thing, HOWEVER, I’m thinking that he’ll likely play the piano on this.

If he pulls out the piano and performs the song really well, he may very well dodge that bus. I’m interested in how well of a piano player he is and if he’s been practicing.

The girls are going to have to really show some musicality to overcome Scotty, The Piano Man.

ETA: While they are clearly trying to bus Scotty, if he pulls out that piano, it possibly changes how people view him. He goes from “one trick pony” to “well-rounded musician” in the minds of many voters. Could be a game changer. TPTB better make sure he doesn’t get that piano!

  187. I don’t know Scotty’s song, but IMO Haley got the best song. Lauren’s song is so overdone, I’m so disappointed the judges picked that. Yep, Haley will win this round easily.

  188. MJ – The song title is You Oughta Know.

What I’d like to know is how she is going to sing it on G-rated Idol? She already had to flub a word on “Rolling In The Deep”, but IDK how Jimmy is going to navigate her around Alanis’ lyrics. It will be interesting.

BTW – I hope Haley has something other than three songs of angst to sing, but this Grammy winner should be interesting.

PS – I think Scott’s song is way safe. Other than that, as long as the other two songs are not throwbacks, he should be okay.

  189. Oooh, “You Oughta Know”. I like this pick (other than some of the lyrics which may turn off certain segments of the viewing public; but they’re already not voting for Haley, right?)

I’m hoping Haley doesn’t go the super-angry, growly girl route, slows it down a but and instead emphasizes hurt and vulnerability – more like Alanis’ Grammy performance here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EPLb4KYpck (bonus: introduced by a really young looking Ellen DeGeneres)

  190. I love Haley’s song choice, I was actually hoping for that for her. I think she could really do something with it, and they really just have to eliminate or change one line of a song. I could even seeing her jazzing it up a little and it will still work. I’m pretty sure it was Steven Tyler who picked it for her.

Lauren’s choice could work for her too. I think that is a good song. I just hope she doesn’t ask Scotty for the lyrics ;)

Scotty’s choice is very dated. I think he’ll do good on it, though.

The thing about these choices is, depending on what else they do, it really shows Haley and Lauren more as modern artists. I know Scotty has a strong fanbase, but what he is doing sounds dated.

It could be an interesting night next week, and I think it could be anyone’s game right now.

  191. I will be really interested in hearing Haley sing this. They gave the other two fairly easy songs to sing. That Alanis song isn’t going to be easy. I would have thought they would have picked something more bluesy

i hope Scotty does Ronan Keating’s version of the song and sing it in his upper register like he did in You’ve Got a Friend…

So totally agree with you. Ronan Keating is quite brilliant in arranging country songs and making them just better somehow.
His version of “If Tomorrow Never Comes” is beautiful and better than the original and I think the same is true of “She Believes in Me.” If Scotty really doesn’t know the song and does research, I hope he finds this version and relates to it.

  193. I’m scared for Haley. This is so much more challenging than Scotty and Lauren’s songs. Scotty’s song has no range and so simple (like the entire season of his songs), and Lauren’s is about the same.

  194. Are there videos out there of these guys getting their texts? Someone mentioned something about that above?

  195. crystal did that song with alanis at the finale
i dont wanna hear haley growlin that song ugh

did the judge who picked scotty’s song even listen to the dang lyrics

lauren i can hear singing that song her studio of candle in the wind is just gorgeous and she really connected with it.. i think she will do good if she finds that emotional connection with the lyrics needed for i hope you dance
p.s. no media thing for lauren? or nothing yet?

  196. The problem with Scotty’s choice – it is a very dated song – from 33 years ago. And Kenny Rogers is hardly a contemporary Country artist. This will just further instll the impression that Scotty is only good at singing old fashion Country songs from another generation.

    I love that version wonderings

Mel1, Haley’s song being more challenging could actually be a good thing! It is more likey to be a moment because it is a more difficult song. I hope Haley has time to do some research on youtube to help her create the best sound for her.

It was cleaned up for Crystal’s duet with Alanis last year on the finale. Not a problem.

  199. Aww, I wish I could dig up Jon Peter Lewis’ groundbreaking performance of “She Believes in the Me” from season 3 when Kenny Rogers mentored. Kenny was kind of a B****.

I like the choice for Haley. I hope she can sing it after she’s already angry about whatever comment she receives on a previous song.

Ronan Keating’s version was from 2003:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNvjnvfMe2Y

  201. I don’t like Alanis Morrisette or this song but I can see Haley getting into it. I think Steven definitely picked it for her. Who else would pick a song with the lyrics “would he go down on you in a theater?” for american idol lol?

  202. So Scotty gets a boring, age inappropriate song. Lauren gets a pretty, age inappropriate song. Haley gets a song that crystal performed on last year’s finale, Haley got the most interesting song by far, but the lyrics will likely have to be edited and she’ll need to really change it up to avoid being compared with how crystal did it and/or with the original, at least her performance should be entertaining.

  203. Haley needs to star the song in acoustic (to showcase her voice) and then kick ass at the end of it with the rock version (growls!!) , it could be really awesome!

    i just love that song!

  204. I do think Haley will stick to the orginal version. This season no one has really reworked/change an arrangement which is something I miss and something that has been lacking this season.

  205. I think it’s a surprisingly good and powerful choice for Haley. Hey, no penguins! Nice contrast to the snooze-fest of the other two. Crystal and Alannis KILLED that at the finale last year. And it channels anger in a wonderfully provocative way.

I agree with all of this for Haley’s song. If it was the only song she was singing that night, I’d be concerned about the likeability factor, but with two other songs, she can balance the affect, like one would do in a concert. This one takes a bit more learning, reworking than the other’s choices, but the chances of something really interesting coming from it are bigger. Nice thing about the Weds-Thurs schedule: they get a bit more time to be ready for the new week. (or maybe the home visits were a day earlier before?)

  206. I’m scared for Haley. This is so much more challenging than Scotty and Lauren’s songs. Scotty’s song has no range and so simple (like the entire season of his songs), and Lauren’s is about the same.

I think she can kill it – the song isn’t boring; it has attitude, drama and feeling built-in. And we already know she’s great at sliding/yodel-y notes like the big “you-you-you oughta know”.

Everyone says Scott’s song is easy, but it has several SUSTAINED notes on the chorus – I don’t think sustained notes are Scotty’s forte; he seems to avoid them and they lack power. Am I wrong on this?

I think you might have forgotten Casey!

  208. I think you might have forgotten Casey!

No I haven’t forgotten Casey. I don’t think he changed arrangements the way that Adam, Kris or David Cook did with their songs in their seasons.

  209. Love the country picks and so will the country fans.

    Haley, payback’s a bitch.

  210. Love the country picks and so will the country fans.

    _________________________________________________________
    Uh, payback for what?

I actually really like all 3 contestants (although I like Scotty and Haley a little better than Lauren) and both of the country songs are complete snoozefests.

  211. If Idol/19/UMG can play their cards right and portray Haley as a take no crap kind of bitch and not cross that fine line in making her unlikable, she can well go on to win new fans and break out of the Idol bubble much quicker once she leaves the show.

  212. Everyone says Scott’s song is easy, but it has several SUSTAINED notes on the chorus – I don’t think sustained notes are Scotty’s forte; he seems to avoid them and they lack power.

Sustained notes. OMG, how challenging (sorry, being sarcastic). Yes, I don’t know why Scotty can’t sustain notes. Does he run out of breath? Go off pitch? But he never get criticized for that either.

  213. Scotty’s is the most challenging simply based on the fact that he doesn’t even know the song. He’s starting from scratch. At least Lauren and Haley’s are somewhat current.

    Haley, payback’s a bitch.

What should she get payback for? Singing well, being unnecessarily blasted by Randy and Jlo, or because voters preferred her over Durbin.
She certainly did not do anything to get blasted or payback for.

  215. NOLA: Haley, payback’s a bitch.

    Payback? For what? *puzzled*

I may not be a particular fan of some of the final three, but so far all I’ve seen is a group of kids working hard and trying their best to hold up under the pressure. *shrug*

  216. I haven’t read through the 9 pages of comments yet … BUT …

I figure Randy picked ‘You Oughta Know’ for Haley. He probably went way back in his extensive musical memory to … the 2010 finale when Crystal and Alanis sang a duet of this song.

I can hear his critique already. ‘I don’t know dawg. I thought that was the perfect song for you and the direction you should go in. But I’ve heard Crystal Bowersox do this song and she blows you out of the water. It’s just aight for me’

  217. Well it seems she is happy with the judges pick for her! I am really rooting for Haley! She wasn’t initally one of my favorites but she has really grown on me! Hope she makes it to the finale! How boring would a Lauren and Scotty finale be? I also hope a girl wins this season! I think a Lauren and Haley finale would be great but of course I’d rather it be a Casey and Haley finale!

  218. I don’t think they have separate judges picks. I think they are a combined pick. In previous years the texts were from a specific judge. In Haley’s video you hear her just say it’s from the “judges”.

  219. Lispill, thanks for that video of Haley. She seems happy with the pick, so here’s hoping!

I have to say that was a pretty sweet moment with the bracelet. Awww.

  220. IMO, Scotty got the worst pick with Kenny Rogers – “She Believes In Me.” There is no way he can emotionally connect with the lyrics. That might not matter to the people who are voting for him though. Who knows.

It’s only a song, people. They are singing a song.
Are you trying to say that Haley can emotionally connect to the lyrics of will you go down on me in a theatre?

  221. I’m scared for Haley. This is so much more challenging than Scotty and Lauren’s songs. Scotty’s song has no range and so simple (like the entire season of his songs), and Lauren’s is about the same.

Actually, the one thing I don’t like about Haley’s song is its limited range. As a tune, it’s not that great – lots of phrases that just hang out on one note. But, one of Haley’s strengths is that she has a variety of vocal color, so she could possibly make it more interesting.

But again, I’m tempted to put too much weight on these 3 songs simply because they’re the only ones we know in advance.

  222. I think they are a combined pick. In previous years the texts were from a specific judge. In Haley’s video you hear her just say it’s from the “judges”.

keware, I was wondering why no specific judge had taken the credit/blame for these…if it’s now a combined ‘Judges Pick’, then I’ll be inclined to think it’s just a guise for a Producers’ Pick…before I’ll buy that all the judges could agree on a choice for each contestant.

Saves them having to think up a plausible reason for the retreads, too – the Producers will do it for them.

    IMO. Of Course.

  223. If Idol/19/UMG can play their cards right and portray Haley as a take no crap kind of bitch and not cross that fine line in making her unlikable, she can well go on to win new fans and break out of the Idol bubble much quicker once she leaves the show.

In other words, a likeable bitch? lol

Haley’s obviously not a bitch and I don’t see that happening.

  224. Not bad picks for all three contestants. Come on haha, there is nothing Knolly about Haley’s pick. She can defiantly sing and kill it. It is a well known song and *current.* Pretty pleased with the songs chosen.

  225. Now that we know we’re going to be blasted with a ton of country songs over the next week or two, I want to make a rule. I know they won’t follow it, but I gotta say it:

Webster’s Rule #1: You can either sing a country song, OR you can sing with a southern accent, but not both at once.

No offense intended towards either country music or southern accents in general, it’s just the combo is waaayyyyy too overdone, and there’s no good reason for it. People from all over like country. Southerners are into all sorts of kinds of music.

(And my tongue is only slightly in cheek – I really am sick of that combination).

  226. The Ronan Keating’s version of She Believes (In Me) is great, and ideal for Scotty.

  227. I am pretty pleased with You Oughta Know. First, no critique for bad song choice. It will be an opportunity for Haley to reprise her psycho character of I Who Have Nothing. Essentially, its Act III, after the romance ends. So emotional connection should not be a problem. I understand the concerns with limited range, but if Haley can add vocal color to songs like Call Me and Beautiful, she can certainly do it here. Plus it has the half yodel of “you, you, oughta know.” Happy camper here.

  228. I love, love, love the judges pick for Haley. I do agree, however that it probably won’t win her any fans that already don’t like her personality. I think Lauren’s pick is safe but I don’t know Scotty’s song so can’t really comment on that pick.

  229. Are you trying to say that Haley can emotionally connect to the lyrics of will you go down on me in a theatre?

It’s ‘will SHE go down on YOU in a theatre.’ She’s asking the guy who dumped her what makes his new girl better.

I have to confess I have no idea what you’re talking about, webster.

Scotty and Lauren should either sing without their accents or not sing country? Is that it?

  231. In other words, a likeable bitch? lol

Haley’s obviously not a bitch and I don’t see that happening.

I think there’s a difference in being a take no crap kind of bitch than being a bitch just to be a bitch. lol

  232. Now that we know we’re going to be blasted with a ton of country songs over the next week or two,

Heh. Webster, my plan is just to step out of the line of fire. With the best intentions in the world, I still Maxed out on those a while back.

  233. This just came from Garner area NBC station on FB:

    NBC17
Josh Turner is surprising the crowd before Scotty hits the stage.

  234. Well I’ll try to think positive. There will be no judge (once again) that will negatively critique their own choice or one of their fellow judge’s choices. So all three will be beautiful, amazing, in it to win it, etc. Let’s hope that the other two songs for each are much better and appropriate. The judges certainly did nothing to redeem themselves with these. The list of approved songs must have been pathetic.

  235. I think there’s a difference in being a take no crap kind of bitch than being a bitch just to be a bitch. lol

Frankly, Haley would have a tough time trying to outdo the wholesome twins from Tennesse/N.C.

  236. Scotty and Lauren should either sing without their accents or not sing country? Is that it?

Well, in the best of all possible worlds, yes. Though, obviously I don’t expect that to happen, especially from a couple of green children.

I’m really more annoyed with the whole country music world, but happen to be suffering from it because I watch idol. Other years, these guys would have been asked to sing other genres, (and other kids would have been asked to sing country) so it would not have been soooo much.

But there are singers who neutralize their speaking accent when they sing. There are plenty of southeners who sing other genres besides country. It just strikes me as annoying, odd and overdone that genre+regional accent should be so strongly linked.

  237. Carrie is a good example of being able to suppress her accent. God, I feel for her if Lauren advances to the Finale because you know she is going to butcher another one of her songs.

  238. I Hope Randy pisses off Haley again right before she has to sing that song. I love Alanis and I Love that song. I Hope Haley does a good job with it. I like Lauren’s song choices. I hope she is not timid to go for the high notes and I hope she HOLDS those notes instead of cutting them off like she usually does.

  239. I’m really more annoyed with the whole country music world, but happen to be suffering from it because I watch idol. Other years, these guys would have been asked to sing other genres, (and other kids would have been asked to sing country) so it would not have been soooo much.

Well, the last part is very true, and I agree it’s unfortunate that wasn’t done this year.

But there are singers who neutralize their speaking accent when they sing. There are plenty of southeners who sing other genres besides country. It just strikes me as annoying, odd and overdone that genre+regional accent should be so strongly linked.

Hasn’t country music always been linked with country regions – where people speak with regional accents? I kind of thought that’s what makes country music what it is. It’s an authenitc regional genre. Where country is most popular, people speak in accents, and sing in accents – if they do country music. To me, it would be odd not to, I guess. Like Irish music without Irish accents.

Yes, there are Southerners who sing a lot of genres other than country. There are a lot who do hip-hop, for example. But I guess I just accept that Lauren and Scotty are who they are, like a lot of other Southern coountry singers. I don’t see it as annoying.

  240. The song choices for Lauren and Scotty are boring. =/ And I think You Oughta Know is an AWESOME song choice, but it’s insanely risky for the Idol stage. And I’m wondering which verse Haley will actually sing and how the lyrics will be changed..

And some people here have never heard of You Oughta Know before?! =O I thought that song was huge. (Then again, I remember during S8’s idol tour some kids didn’t even know what Hey Jude was…)

  241. I really like Scotty’s song but I’m afraid he’d have a hard time connecting to it. It’s such a poignant, tender song that is best sung by an adult who’s been in that situation at some point in his life.

  242. I for one don’t have a problem with country nor southern accents. I’m not much of a country fan, but there are some that I really like (Keith Urban). Since I’m from the south, Scotty and Lauren sound perfectly “normal” to me LOL. But I’m not impressed with the judges’ choices for either of them. I’m looking forward to the songs they choose for themselves. And, imo, having Scotty and Lauren in the finale, wouldn’t be boring. There have been plenty of pop singers in there. Country might be a refreshing change.

  243. I wouldn’t be too sure that the judges won’t criticize the choices. Simon hated it when Randy & Kara picked Apologize for Kris, remember? So who knows — maybe Randy will rant about the Alannis song being all wrong for Haley or something.

And if Josh Turner is singing with Scotty today, does that make it more or less likely that they will duet on the finale?

  244. I didn’t scroll back throguh all the posts on here, so maybe I missed the joke?

Why can’t you sing a country song with a southern accent? There are dozens of current country artists who have very distinct southern accents. Likewise, there are a lot of country artists who don’t have southern accents, and there are lots of musicians with southern accents who are rap, r&b, pop or rock artists rather than country ones.

  245. The judges, for the most part, have taken the easy way out this season. They won’t critique the other judge’s choices because they won’t want theirs critiqued. Let’s hope each of the finalists are able (that darn list again) to pick something much better.

  246. So who knows — maybe Randy will rant about the Alannis song being all wrong for Haley or something.

That would be funny, girlygirl, if Randy forgets to pretend that he was part of the ‘Judges Choice’ that supposedly agreed on the songs in the first place.

And he easily could – Randy has no problem w/saying three contradictory things in the same sentence. lol

  247. Also…I live in New York and ANY southern accent is better than ours!

  248. I’m not getting the “dated is bad” comments for Scotty’s song. Cook sang Your Face on top 3 night and it was the performance of the night. A classic, romantic, old fashion ballad is pretty much bowling it right up the middle for a large part of the AI viewing audience. If Scotty delivers it well I can see this totally working for him. If.

Lauren got a song lots of people know and love, she’ll be fine. Haley’s song will turn off a lot of people, but not the people who were going to vote for her anyway. She’s got a good chane to pick up the non-country vote.

I think the busing, if there is any, will be in Iovine’s choice. Or the arrangements. Lighting. Etc. Still lots of ways for the show to play it’s evil tricks.

  249. ONTD. Level of difficulty (10 being highest): IHYD=3; SBIM=5; YOTK=9.

Scotty will have his moment, Lauren will be competent, Haley will play the dragon wrangler—upside down, blindfolded and covered in oil.

  250. I think all 3 song choices are good. Thumbs up.

I hope one of the country kids goes this week or we are going to have to hear tons and tons of bitching about a country finale. Last year we had an all folk rock finale and I’m pretty sure we all survived. :D

I love, love, love the judges pick for Haley. I do agree, however that it probably won’t win her any fans that already don’t like her personality. I think Lauren’s pick is safe but I don’t know Scotty’s song so can’t really comment on that pick.

    Hi Jersey! (wavin’)

Have to confess I’d never heard of “You Oughta Know” so off to youtube I went to give a listen. Didn’t like the original, but I scrolled down to a cover of it by Beyonce. Liked her version better and could (better) envision Haley singing it.

I do have to wonder though, as many others have, is this an appropriate song for AI? I mean, I’m not a prude and I love the lyrics, but really? For a family show in primetime? I haven’t read all the comments yet, but which judge picked this song and is it gonna make Haley seem even trashier/bitchier than some general AI viewers (idiots) already think she is?

    I call foul.

  252. Wow, awesome song choice for Hayley! I LOVE “You Oughta Know” by Alanis and feel it is just perfect for Hayley.
She should have a killer moment with that one…… :)

  253. I just listened to the 2003 version of She Believes in Me; it is gorgeous. I would have preferred The Coward of the County for him, but done right this could be beautiful. As far as connecting…. Scotty has never been a solider but Letters from Home was one of the best examples of storytelling I have seen on Idol.

  254. I do have to wonder though, as many others have, is this an appropriate song for AI?

Did people complain about Adam’s “Whole Lotta Love”? You know, way down inside… Gonna give you every inch of my love…

And as he finishes the song he says: “I love you Grandma!”

  256. Did people complain about Adam’s “Whole Lotta Love”? You know, way down inside… Gonna give you every inch of my love…

Okay, you got me there. Let the sexual innuendos fly!
    (Damn kids anyway!) :op

  257. Haley will play the dragon wrangler—upside down, blindfolded and covered in oil.

Anyone have the link to the video showing this?

  258. jlc, TPTB just went all the way back to last years Finale, when Crystal did this very song with Alanis.

They already have their ‘family friendly’ edit – ready to roll, from that version.

All the picks are pretty eh, IMO – but the only foul I can see is the set-up for recent comparisons w/the original singer And with Crystal, since that was just last year, either Randy or Seacrest likely won’t be able to resist.

And, well yeah, it’s a harder song to sing, and people (generic) don’t just lurve it, and all the rest. But, it’s one song of three – can’t even guess at impact w/out all the variables.

Now, if everyone does something different with each song – that may be interesting – except, with the ‘stay in your lane’ theme – people stuck in the country lane have fewer choices. What? Slow, Mid-tempo, Upbeat?

    Even that would be good.

    IMO. Of Course.

  259. I do have to wonder though, as many others have, is this an appropriate song for AI?

Here is my thought on this……
I believe the original version of the song is over 4 minutes long. Haley will need to cut it at least in half. Some parts of the song are more graphic (and inappropriate) than others. Perhaps she will work around those parts. I also envision the possibility of her changing up a couple of the lyrics. Yes, it will be interesting to see how this all pans out in her performance. I feel she is up for the challenge and will make it work.
    Looking forward to Wednesday!

  260. Are you trying to say that Haley can emotionally connect to the lyrics of will you go down on me in a theatre?

It’s ‘will SHE go down on YOU in a theatre.’ She’s asking the guy who dumped her what makes his new girl better.

Now, I for one will power vote for Haley if she rehearses the sanitized version of this lyric, and sings the real one live, lol.

Hey, what can I tell you- 2 hours for 9 songs is going to drive me insane.

  261. Just to play devils advocate on some of the remarks about being subjected to so much country, we country fans have had to listen to all the other genres with very little country for 10 yrs. I say its about time!!! lol

  262. Love the pick for Haley, though think she should do the stripped down acoustic version of it, kind of haunting. Heard Alanis do it that way once and it was GORGEOUS! Plus, the song is so angry and fierce, it could turn viewers away if it comes across too bitchy or something.

Also, the picks for Scotty and Lauren just reminded me that I don’t give a shit about country, and really hope they’re not the final two. Worst. Finale. Ever. And I probably wouldn’t watch.

LOL …. I think you nailed it jlc :)

One never knows – LOL – just kidding.

  266. Did people complain about Adam’s “Whole Lotta Love”? You know, way down inside… Gonna give you every inch of my love…

People complained, but for different reasons . . . . You could believe Adam knew ( in the Biblical sense ;) ) the meaning of his lyrics. Scotty probably kisses his cross at the thought of his . . . . .

  267. and really hope they’re not the final two. Worst. Finale. Ever. And I probably wouldn’t watch.

I definitely won’t be watching. What can they do tho if Scotty and Lauren get the most votes? Aren’t they the “chosen” ones, anyway? I guess if they are who America likes, then, what can I say. No one is forcing me to watch.

  268. The picks are all fine, just uninspired. I mean I hope you dance was heard over and over during Hollywood week; you outta know was performed at last years finale; and you believe in me is…. Kenny Rogers.

mmb, that covers it, IMO. I don’t have anything left to say. *chuckle*

  269. I love the song choice for Haley! She could do something really great and interesting with this song. I’m looking forward to seeing what she comes up with. The other two, not so much.

  270. For TylerWV, the devil’s advocate:

Nothing wrong with a little Country on idol, but, if I wanted more, I’d be watching CMT, or Nashville Star, instead. Count me in on skipping the all-Country final, but, watching the finale to see all the guests & former idols. Won’t care who wins.

  271. Just to play devils advocate on some of the remarks about being subjected to so much country, we country fans have had to listen to all the other genres with very little country for 10 yrs.I say its about time!!! lol

I hear you. Part of me wants to say the best thing is to have some variety, because I would be complaining just as bitterly over an all R&B final or an all singer-songwriter final (I skipped last’s year, for example) or an all jazz final……

But, to be honest with myself, if it was an all hard-rock final, I would so be there.

But who knows, it may be mixed. I kinda like all 3 of the remaining people, but like Haley most, and could be quite happy with a Haley plus either of the other two. And in any case, even if it’s Scotty and Lauren in the final, the final-final will be cut through with others from the top 11, so, not all country.

  272. I don’t get everyone complaining about Scotty’s song being dated. What’s dated about it? It is an old song but its a love ballad. How can that get dated? I agree it is age inappropriate. Would have preferred another Kenny Roger’s song.

Haley’s song is more current but it certainly isn’t much as far as a song goes. Not a great deal of melody to sing. Considering the judge’s constant criticism of her not choosing bluesy, soulful songs, they certainly didn’t do any better.

Lauren will sound ridiculous singing a song intended for a daughter. It is a pretty song and I’m sure she can sing it well technically, but her biggest problem is connection to the lyrics. Makes sense they’d pick a song she can’t possibly connect to, doesn’t it?

  273. Did people complain about Adam’s “Whole Lotta Love”? You know, way down inside… Gonna give you every inch of my love…

I think the big issue was the believability one: would he sing “woman” or something he could better relate to..

  274. I think they’re all great choices and fits each of them perfectly. Just not too excited that we’ve heard two of these songs in the show very recently.

  275. Here are my thoughts on performance night. All three do great. Haley’s is the standout. Lauren will flub a note or lyric, trip, or rip a seam and during the critique will shower tears of sorrow for messing up and go for sympathy! (now that she has seen how that works for her)

  276. Did people complain about Adam’s “Whole Lotta Love”? You know, way down inside… Gonna give you every inch of my love…

I think the big issue was the believability one: would he sing “woman” or something he could better relate to..

The producers and sponsors never would have approved that.

So, lyrics shouldn’t really be a problem. The two country songs have a pretty melody. That’s what is most important. Haley’s song doesn’t have a great melody, so that will be challenging to sell.

  277. Great choices for ALL three contestants. Haley HAS to do the stripped down, piano-accompanied version of You Oughtta Know that Alanis did at the Grammys that year. That arrangement is PERFECT for her!

  278. I think Haley’s the only one who has a chance with her song to make a difference and gain support. She will either crash and burn or soar.

The other two have songs that are nice and safe. They will both sing them nice and safe like the good children they are. Their fans will love it. But I doubt either will gain more votes.

  279. I hope one of the country kids goes this week or we are going to have to hear tons and tons of bitching about a country finale. Last year we had an all folk rock finale and I’m pretty sure we all survived.

Oh yeah, and the ratings for that year were just fantastic. I mean, that finale was puuuuurrrree excitement, too. It so stopped people from saying how boring that season was, right?

These song choices are cool, but kinda typical for the country bumpkins, and really, as neat as it would be for Haley to sing Alanis, it will reignite the dumb “don’t know who she is as an artist” nonsense that I can’t take anymore. Emotional connection and knowing your niche is important, but this season has been so hammered home about that ish, it’s preventing us from simple enjoying a good old fashion vocal performance, or respecting the lengths each contestant are willing to stretch their talents for.

  280. Last year we had an all folk rock finale and I’m pretty sure we all survived.

Oh yeah, and the ratings for that year were just fantastic. I mean, that finale was puuuuurrrree excitement, too. It so stopped people from saying how boring that season was, right?

    Can’t stop laughing.

  281. Also, the picks for Scotty and Lauren just reminded me that I don’t give a shit about country, and really hope they’re not the final two. Worst. Finale. Ever. And I probably wouldn’t watch.

    Yeah same here.

Oh yeah, believe me, if it’s an all R&B finale, and I’ll be there, too. Thing is, an R&B artist have not been in the finale since season 6, so of course I wouldn’t mind.

Honestly, if an all country finale happens, I’ll just simple ignore the performance finale. And I’m sure the southern/country folks will keep ratings steady. But AI producers should not expect major buzz coming out of it, since really buzzed about contestants like Casey, Pia and James left. Scotty got early buzz for his deep voice, but I think that’s faded.

  282. I tried- and I mean I really REALLY tried- to watch the Scotty homecoming concert. It was a major snooze fest for me- so I can’t even imagine a country finale.

After watching Scotty perform, I can actually envision an all girl finale.

  283. Can’t stop laughing.

LOL, hahaha. Ya see? I mean, was I wrong? ;)
People can come prove to me that last year’s singer-songwriter finale was exciting to others. But it will be very difficult.

  284. I tried- and I mean I really REALLY tried- to watch the Scotty homecoming concert. It was a major snooze fest for me- so I can’t even imagine a country finale

Ya see? Ya see? I mean, again, was I wrong about last year? ;)

    YA SEE!? LOL! :p

In a twisted sense, me too.

  286. I adore Alanis’s song but on AI? Isn’t it a bit uh uh racey for AI?

‘Would she go down on you in a theater?’ not to mention ‘And are you thinking of me when you f… her?’

So it gets chopped to bits leaving Haley trying to make this song work. hm hm

Ah yes Lauren gets the advice song from mother to daughter. Kinda weird, she is only 16, I have always loved this song too.

Scotty, yep great song for Scotty.

Here are my thoughts on performance night. All three do great. Haley’s is the standout. Lauren will flub a note or lyric, trip, or rip a seam and during the critique will shower tears of sorrow for messing up and go for sympathy! (now that she has seen how that works for her)

I think this exactly backwards. I see Haley off key like usual for half her song and heaven forbid if anyone calls her on it, bless her heart.
Meanwhile Lauren sings another powerful, pitch-perfect song and the blogosphere ignores that completely and calls it (take your pick) unconnected/forgettable/not age-appropriate and anyway did you see those pants?

  288. Last year’s ratings weren’t imo a result of singers similiar to each other in the finale. Put Mike or Katie in there and it wouldn’t have been better. It was not a well received cast.

Bo was southern rock that can fit on a country station and Carrie was pop/country. They weren’t too different from each other and the finale held up fine. Country award shows do well and the regions where Idol is most popular like country.

The ratings will depend on how well liked the remaining two contestants are and whether the outcome is in doubt. Clay and Ruben have the highest rated finale and it isn’t because their genre’s were huge. It’s because they both were wildly popular personally and no one knew who would win.

  289. Scotty has the potential to kill this song. He is a great storyteller. Also, old does not necessarily equal bad. One would think that we should throw out the history of music because it’s old. This is a classic song that plays to his strengths. He has shown the ability to interpret great songs with his performance of “You’ve Got a Friend”. That could have been a trainwreck because the song is classic and has been done so much. He found the heart and soul of this song. It was brilliant.

Love is the ultimate human emotion. Just because Scotty is young, doesn’t mean that he can’t have feelings about finding the love of his life. I predict that he will give a great performance that will not be boring!

  290. Great choices for ALL three contestants. Haley HAS to do the stripped down, piano-accompanied version of You Oughtta Know that Alanis did at the Grammys that year. That arrangement is PERFECT for her!

Just read this so maybe it won’t be as bad as my first reaction. It’s a very angry song tho. Curious who picked it for her.

  291. haley’s only missed 2 notes all season in “rolling in the deep” and she still sounded great.

  292. I tried- and I mean I really REALLY tried- to watch the Scotty homecoming concert. It was a major snooze fest for me- so I can’t even imagine a country finale

Ya see? Ya see? I mean, again, was I wrong about last year?

    YA SEE!? LOL! :p

Desiree, you got me started again. You have quite the sense of humor.

  293. I think the big issue was the believability one: would he sing “woman” or something he could better relate to..

The producers and sponsors never would have approved that.

The year before, when Amanda Overmyer sang “You Can’t Do That” either to her girlfriend or boyfriend that was flirting with some guy, nobody batted an eye. In fact, she got her highest praise for that performance.

That would seem to indicate that the producers and sponsors wouldn’t care.

Likewise, “You Oughtta Know” was sung on the show before with nary a complaint to the FCC. I’m pretty sure that it will be a non-issue for almost everybody. It’s a good song that Haley will be able to kill. Getting a good song is half the battle. Haley got the best song, followed by Lauren with Scotty bringing up the rear by quite some distance (honestly, the song is meant to show a lifetime of regret for the personal costs of trying to pursue a career in music – it’s a ridiculous choice and the judges should have known better).

  294. So it gets chopped to bits leaving Haley trying to make this song work. hm hm

It’s a four minute song and she will likely sing it for less than two.
    She can figure it out.

  295. I hope so doggiedr.

So so we have a 16yr old singing a tender mother song.
a 17 year old singing a loving husband song.
Haley singing a pissed off as hell song.

LOL hope she slams it so far out of the park they can’t pick their jaws up off the floor. Randy passes out, Jlo is reduced to gibbering and Steven gets up on his table pumping his fist shouting GO HALEY.

  296. haley’s only missed 2 notes all season in “rolling in the deep” and she still sounded great.

I’m basically tone deaf and even I know that Haley struggles at times to hit her notes. She doesn’t have great range and she seems to make up for that by growling or screeching to help hide the fact that she can’t quite get her voice there.

  297. And to show I am open minded to country music, I caught the video of Lauren doing “Flat on the Floor”. Even though it was shot from backstage I have 2 observations:
    1) it was nice seeing her dressed in jeans like most 16 year olds do;
    2) she seemed a hell of a lot more engaging than Scotty.

OK- are there Haley clips out there? Back to my Twitter feed….

And did I mention I SHOULD be cleaning my house? ;)

  298. I’m watching the playback now of Scotty getting his text message about his song. Apparently this was a judges choice meaning all and not specifically one judge since Scotty didn’t actually mention a name. I’m assuming that was the case for Haley and Lauren as well.

  299. After watching Scotty perform, I can actually envision an all girl finale.

That’s weird, after watching him perform I can’t envision an all-girl finale at all! :P

  300. Kirsten, I couldn’t agree with your post more! :) Haley will kill this song. Lauren will sing hers well. I was thinking hers could also apply to graduating and going out in the world. Good timing for that kind off thing also.
But there is no way a 17 year old boy should be singing Scotty’s song. It has made me wonder of the producers want an all girl Final! That would actullay make me really happy!

  301. I’m basically tone deaf and even I know that Haley struggles at times to hit her notes. She doesn’t have great range and she seems to make up for that by growling or screeching to help hide the fact that she can’t quite get her voice there.

Lol. You had me at “I’m basically tone deaf.”

  302. Tess I have to disagree. I don’t think Haley is wobbly at all.

I would be very interested to know the vocal ranges of each of these contestants. Tried looking for the old site that used to have each year’s contestant’s ranges.

I think Haley has the biggest, with Lauren in second and Scotty trailing.

  303. Pam, I just watched Haley’s….She said….the song WE judges have chosen for you….

That is a good way to do it IMHO

  304. If Scotty sings his pick well and plays the piano on his song, I can see him picking up many “he’s a well-rounded musician” votes easily a la Kris Allen.

  305. That is a good way to do it IMHO

Thank you. :) I agree that really is the best way.

  306. If Scotty sings his pick well and plays the piano on his song

I thought he was joking about playing the piano with his sister. Didn’t he say he had one month of piano classes?

  307. I’m basically tone deaf and even I know that Haley struggles at times to hit her notes.

If you’re basically tone deaf I’m not sure you can be any judge of whether or not a contestant hits the notes. Just sayin.

  308. Hasn’t country music always been linked with country regions – where people speak with regional accents? I kind of thought that’s what makes country music what it is. It’s an authenitc regional genre.

I think there are a good number of country singers now who either feign or amplify a southern accent. My problem with the amplification of accent is that country singers go nasal to do it, so too often I can’t tell the singers apart. Sometimes this is a waste of a good voice. Jennifer Nettles, whose voice I love, has a complete voice change-up when not doing country on her latest cd. I don’t understand it, the accent makes everyone sound alike: After listening to country all last summer and this spring, I can still only identify by voice a hand full of singers.

  309. I thought he was joking about playing the piano with his sister. Didn’t he say he had one month of piano classes?

I remember a snippet somewhere that Paul McDonald was teaching him to play the piano. Wish I could remember where I heard that.

  310. As far as the words to Haleys song, if they werent posted a few pages back, I would never have know what the words were, unless its a song with few words, just repeating the same ones, I dont even know the words to some old songs that I have been singing along to for years. I just sing the same stupid sounds that the song sounds like lol!!!

  311. Hasn’t country music always been linked with country regions – where people speak with regional accents? I kind of thought that’s what makes country music what it is. It’s an authenitc regional genre.

Then all music would be country as all regions speak with their own unique accent. Even “standard American” has its own inflections and vowel shifts.

Southerners don’t all speak the same way and neither do Northerners.

  312. Keith Urban is from Oz, Taylor Swift is from PA. I know there are others. But those are two big ones

  313. Southerners don’t all speak the same way and neither do Northerners.

No, they don’t, but oddly enough, most country singers seem to sing Tennessee; they sound like my relatives there.

The good news about country music is that I know what the singer is saying. I haven’t known what was being said for quite a while. I have read that baby boomers are turning to country because it is closest to their rock roots. I think they are actually turning to country because they are all going deef!

  314. Nativenewyorker says:
Scotty has the potential to kill this song. He is a great storyteller.

I agree with this. Scotty could do really well with this song.

    Bobbi says:
Haley’s song is more current but it certainly isn’t much as far as a song goes. Not a great deal of melody to sing.

I think it must be a hard song to sell – yes I think so too, because of the melody – you have to display the right attitude singing it. Could be a great challenge for Haley.

  315. I’ve heard a rumor that halfway through Haley’s performance they’ll release hungry lions that she has to fight off while singing, a la Russell Crowe in Gladiator

  316. I’ve heard a rumor that halfway through Haley’s performance they’ll release hungry lions that she has to fight off while singing, a la Russell Crowe in Gladiator

    So, Randy is Commodus. lol

  317. I’ve heard a rumor that halfway through Haley’s performance they’ll release hungry lions that she has to fight off while singing, a la Russell Crowe in Gladiator

But of course, MBLovesPaula, it’s in the script.
Scotty, OTOH, will remove a thorn from a lion’s paw, creating instant friendship – while Lauren will charm the Pride with her breathless, dulcet tones.

Meanwhile, Nigel will beam from the sidelines, adjust his laurel leaf crown – and encourage a crowd of pre-teens to rush the stage.

    Bwahahah!

  318. Nativenewyorker says:
Scotty has the potential to kill this song. He is a great storyteller.

I am not sure if its Scotty or country songs or country style singing that you are sensing. Scotty’s “Nuts of Wonder” version of Lauren’s suggests that story telling ain’t always there. Country songs, more than any style of music out there, are story-telling songs. Not much abstraction, not much ambiguity — plain talkin’. Country singing tends to focus on plain singing too. Not a whole lot of melisma — the use of vocal runs that characterizes a lot of urban/gospel singing. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melisma
As Blake Shelton (the Voice) said last week he was taught that verbal gymnastics should be avoided. Quite the oposite for, say, Christina Aguilara. Vocal flourishes tend to dimiish the ability to understand the words.
Scotty, singing country songs in a country style is gonna be able to communicate a story. Haley, singing Moanin’ in a jazz style will not. The words are not as important as the expression of sound and feeling.

  319. Epic responses from abl890 and Incipit

    Lauren’s breathless, dulcet tones, hahahaha

And we can all TOTALLY see them ordering Haley to state her name and her angrily snapping back, My name is ‘gladiator’

  320. I love alanis’ stripped down w/ strings Grammy version of you oughta know. I still play the song on my iPod. Such a real dumped- girl screed. Although learning that the song was written about Dave Coulier is a headscratcher. What was Alanis doing with him in a theater???

  321. Keith Urban is from Oz, Taylor Swift is from PA. I know there are others. But those are two big ones

    Shania Twain is Canadian.

Then again, I don’t think it’s a big deal. Many British singers have no British accent when they sing.

  322. As Blake Shelton (the Voice) said last week he was taught that verbal gymnastics should be avoided. Quite the oposite for, say, Christina Aguilara. Vocal flourishes tend to dimiish the ability to understand the words.

I was surprised he picked Tyler (in the first round), who he was referring to using runs and back where he comes from, that is not a good thing. Regardless if he didn’t like Tyler’s runs, I knew he would pick Patrick.

I can’t imagine “A Change is Gonna Come” would be very interesting w/o the runs Adam did. He would still be an incredible vocalist, but the runs add another dimension to his talent.

  323. It’s always interesting that at this point (Final 3) there are really none of us “Idol Addicts” that will change our minds. It will really come down to the non-frequent voters + already existing fan bases. The question is really whether any of them has such a huge fan base that the non-frequent voters are not enough to close the gap? No amount of bashing is likely going to change the Idol addicts. If anything, it just further heightens our resolve to support who we do. Regardless of how they do on these songs, we will see our favorite through rose colored glasses and never be able to believe that one of the others did far better.

  324. notice one thing whenever someone gets shockingly booted off on the idol stage…there are surrounded by a round of boos..how many people really wanted scotty to go home in that audience instead of james…and how many wanted catherine to go home instead of daughtry…when someone boos for an elimination how much do they REALLY support the person they are paired with the one who they are standing next to being saved?

  325. Blake Shelton (the Voice)… he was taught that verbal gymnastics should be avoided. Vocal flourishes tend to dimiish the ability to understand the words.

What a coinkydink, I was taught the same thing – pageant style over singing, melisma, overdecorating, embellishment, showboating, filler flourishes, runs, verbal gymnastics, whatever people want to call it – I was taught – “Don’t do that.” I don’t like to listen to it, and Idol judges just flove it. (Last Era)

Scotty doesn’t, that I have noticed – it’s not a big feature of country singing – he doesn’t even sustain end notes in a phrase very much. Haley just got a ration of crap from ol’ Randy because she didn’t add them to her interpretation of a song. IDK if Lauren does them, I would doubt it, because melismatic verbal gymnastics are all about showing off breath control.

So all three of them start with one check in the positive column towards next week! Heh.

  326. Has anyone mentioned that Haley’s song was done by Crystal and Alanis last year? If not, is this because no one remembers?

Think it’s a safe bet that Randy will mention it with a negative comparision (they killed it, you didn’t bring it).

Danny Gokey was the last (that I could find on youtube) to sing I Hope You Dance and couldn’t find any contestant who’s done She Believes in Me but did find a hilarious clip of Tom Jones – maybe Scotty can borrow his tight pants and big belt buckle.

  327. It’s always interesting that at this point (Final 3) there are really none of us “Idol Addicts” that will change our minds. It will really come down to the non-frequent voters + already existing fan bases.

I read speculation, somewhere, that Haley might have been helped by votes from the Gaga fans (the “monsters” I think they called them). I wonder what would happen if celebrities with huge fan bases got behind a contestant and urged their fans to vote. Given the strong fan bases of people who appear to like Haley over the other two, would this be fair?

  328. Has anyone mentioned that Haley’s song was done by Crystal and Alanis last year? If not, is this because no one remembers?

flyaway , in the 15 pages of responses, it’s been mentioned 5-10 times or so. Also the fact that I Hope You Dance was all over the preliminary rounds – and included "Nuts of Wonder".

There is probably a link to the Finale performance – and it’s been pointed out that the Family Friendly edit has already been done, if TPTB want Haley to copy that, just like they copied the song choice.

Either Randy or Ryan are expected to make some douchey remark about the previous performance, although I don’t think anyone has laid any side bets on it.

Lyrics are here too – in case anyone has an idea for a better edit. It’s a big thread – lots to read – Heh.

  329. I think the country songs for Lauren and Scotty, if a bit sleepy are at least emotional enough to connect with the voting public but Haleys song is an angry song and not one for emotional connect. I say Haley got the short end of the stick on these song choices.

  330. Haley just got a ration of crap from ol’ Randy because she didn’t add them to her interpretation of a song.

I still haven’t made any sense of why Randy wanted Haley to change MJ’s original version, which he screams his pleas, to runs. I think that would have changed to whole message and emotion of the song.

Haley has great runs and scatting, but she doesn’t always need to use them

  331. later says:
I say Haley got the short end of the stick on these song choices.

Not just that, it’s a crap song. Randy couldn’t throw her under the bus with his remarks, so maybe he’s trying to do it with this. I hope Haley puts her own twist on it and totally kills it.

  332. BTW, I thought Lauren was from Georgia, thus the whole “connection” and flirting with Peaches Seacrest since he’s from Georgia too.

  333. Mel1, Rossville, GA looks like it is a wide spot in the road right on the GA/TN state line, with Chattanooga a few miles away, so I guess it made sense to have Lauren’s homecoming where there were venues large enough for the fans. I was near there a couple of months ago for a convention, and there is not a whole lot up there in Northwest Ga.

  334. I say Haley got the short end of the stick on these song choices.

Not just that, it’s a crap song. Randy couldn’t throw her under the bus with his remarks, so maybe he’s trying to do it with this. I hope Haley puts her own twist on it and totally kills it.

Remember, they get to sing two other songs this week, therefore these are not THAT significant. I hope that they all make interesting choices themselves. I have a feeling that Lauren will cut loose this week and finally show her ability to wail on the high notes. She has gorgeous texture to her tone, but I am really getting tired of waiting for her to show her range. I wonder if that is an intentional tactic?? Keep us wanting more and then blast us to get into the finale? It could work.
As far as I’m concerned, I would like to see Scotty do fewer vocal gymnastics. His lower register is sensational and beautiful on its own. He doesn’t need to dress it up all over the place. And no more stage antics, please. I would like to hear a singing competition this week. Stay on stage and SING!!

  335. I think the original “You Oughta Know” is incredible – but I don’t know about the motivation behind selecting that for Haley.

Lauren will be singing something inspirational, Scotty will be singing about love and devotion, and Haley . . . well, however the lyrics are changed, the sentiment remains the same – “are you thinking of me when you f*** her?”

I don’t see even the most amazing performance of that as something most AI viewers would find “enjoyable” – not because of particular words but because of the whole emotional gist. People watching AI just want to kick back and enjoy, don’t they? I mean, sad songs are one thing – they can be bittersweet, pretty. A sexy song, well that can be fun. But I always felt Alanis just sort of opened a vein and bled the lyrics to this one . . . it’s a really uncomfortable song, intentionally. Isn’t that gonna work against Haley?

  336. As far as I’m concerned, I would like to see Scotty do fewer vocal gymnastics.

Fewer? If he did any less, he would just be humming one note.

  337. Fewer? If he did any less, he would just be humming one note.

omg spewed my water on the monitor. Best comment of the day right there LOL

  338. Fewer? If he did any less, he would just be humming one note.

omg spewed my water on the monitor. Best comment of the day right there LOL

Mel1 is in it to win it!!!

  339. Ok, sorry. I am traveling and don’t have time to read all 15 pages… which judge chose Haley’s song? OMG. I am not sure what to think about THAT.

  340. which judge chose Haley’s song?

They all chose the song for her, as they did for Scotty and Lauren.

  341. Here are my thoughts on performance night. All three do great. Haley’s is the standout. Lauren will flub a note or lyric, trip, or rip a seam and during the critique will shower tears of sorrow for messing up and go for sympathy! (now that she has seen how that works for her)

It worked really well for Haley too! Just sayin!

  342. This is a tough final 3. I have the impression that Scotty has a lock on the competition. I feel like he is so far ahead of everyone that it is not a competition. I like this final 3. I think they all have talent though their musical styles are not mine. Alaina blew me away in the auditions. I so saw how Nigel loved her. But haven’t seen her bring it since. Haley, I adore that in your face spunky, take no prisoners attitude. Some hate her attitude as they expect all the idols to kiss ass and say yes sir no sir. Her voice is different. Though Alaina has a power packed voice. Hmmmmmm I’m torn between the two girls. Scotty is predictable.

  343. I’m not familiar with Scotty’s song (at least not from the title, haven’t gone and looked it up to listen yet), but from the looks of it, I don’t think they did anyone any favors with these picks.

Scotty does seem to be a good storyteller, but the lyrics/subject matter that people are discussing here sounds like it may be hard for him to really “get into” and I think what we’ve seen lately in their rehearsal clips and whatnot have shown that Scotty really does think about what he’s singing and try to get to the real meaning of it. I imagine he’ll do ok with it because it sounds like style-wise it’s right in his wheelhouse but he’s probably gonna have to try to tap an emotion he likely can’t relate to, or that isn’t believable (or that people wouldn’t want to believe of him).

Lauren’s song is, well, a pretty song with a nice message, but I’m someone who actually likes slow songs and this one hasn’t really ever done much for me. The melody is mostly repetitive and the song just really doesn’t feel like it goes anywhere. For me (for you) she could totally knock it dead, sing it better than the original – and it still wouldn’t be that impressive because I just don’t think it’s a very good song.

I love Haley’s song…but the whole idea of a “singer’s song” has been talked about before and this doesn’t really seem like a good “singer’s song.” She can probably tap the attitude and all that the song calls for, but at least in the original version the verses are pretty much amelodic (listen to the original, in the verse/prechorus where Alanis umm…sings (?) “’cause the love that you gave that we made wasn’t able to make it enough for you to be open wide, no”). If Haley does the song mostly straight, those parts of the song are almost speak-singing (not exactly like Ke$ha’s style of speak-singing but in that direction). If she tries to actually make those parts melodic, it’s probably going to sound wrong. I think the subject matter/language are in fact less of a problem for her than the fact that the song just doesn’t lend itself well to singing. A better Alanis song for singing would be “Hand In My Pocket.” Ironically (there’s another one too), that’s another song that Crystal did last year – and the fact they can compare Haley to Crystal could be a potential landmine for her as well. I don’t know if many Crystal fans have also been Haley fans – I know I’m not but I’m a sample of 1.

Part of me wonders if there’s any agenda at all shown in these song choices…or if in fact, they just simply suck. Lauren’s will likely sound fine but not great, Scotty may be unconvincing, and Haley may just plain raise even more eyebrows if she really goes for it. That could actually panic Scotty’s voters and if Haley gets people riled up, her voters may come out in greater force as well. By Lauren having perhaps the best (most generic) pick, they may have actually put her at a disadvantage in the end.

  344. My first thought on seeing this was that the songs chosen for Lauren and Scotty are exactly the sort of songs that got Pia voted off. Boring. And Lauren’s song is so worn out it ought to be retired. Interesting choices there, judges.

As for Haley’s song, it could be awesome, or awful, depending on how she chooses to handle it. She, at least, has been given a real challenge, and possibly an opportunity, I think.

I’m glad there are going to be more songs than just these.

  345. Carrie is a good example of being able to suppress her accent.

Carrie isn’t from DIXIE, she’s from Oklahoma. That is not the South. Sorry if our accents offend you; but it isn’t something we can simply turn on or off.

    Where are you located, Web?

Let me add that Lauren is not from Tennessee. She is from Rossville, GA, which is on the GA/TN border. Her town only has abt 3,500 residents, so they had her homecoming in Chattanooga, TN.

I totally agree with your assessment of Haley’s song, it’s pretty tuneless. That can be OK if you have a very colorful voice. I’m very curious about how Crystal sounded on it – I probably can find that on YouTube. Her voice is so rich and full of texture, I imagine it still sounded musical through the monotone passages – so they sound like repeated notes on an instrument would sound instead of talking.

Haley’s voice isn’t colorful in the same way, but it is distinct and musical, so I think it could work for her. Or maybe some jazz influenced scat/rap thing that would be creative, interesting and entertaining, although not beautiful singing. I think she’s going to have to show off her singing on a different song.

And, yes, I’m a Crystal and Haley fan. I’d say my top 5 idol voices have been Crystal, Adam, Fantasia, Taylor, and Haley, in that order. I’m still waiting for one of them to make post-Idol music I like, though Crystal has come closest.

Then there is Keith Urban who speaks with an Aussie accent and sings with a Southern accent. LOL

  348. I cannot believe they gave Scotty this song…..it is a good song but for an older person. Maybe Scotty can grow a beard and SELL it….I guess if he can sell this he should be in the Finale. Go Scotty

  349. Love is the ultimate human emotion. Just because Scotty is young, doesn’t mean that he can’t have feelings about finding the love of his life. I predict that he will give a great performance that will not be boring!

  350. Three things, people not knowing about “You Oughta Know” make me feel old. I hate when that happens, but oh well.
Second, I think all three of the songs kind of blow. There are so many more songs that would have fit these guys better, and I would have been more interested in seeing. What a total wiff by the, typically, lame-ass judges. Another waste –no surprise there.
Third, I think Haley should do a version of Alanis’s Grammy performance of YOK it even has an orchestra! because that would help mitigate the whole angry and tuneless thing, the song has going on. I mean I not terribly fond of Alanis Morrissette (that’s NOT what ironic actually means…grrrr) but I do like that song. And I could see much more the Grammy version on AI for a finale, than anything else.

  351. I am really sad about Haley’s song choice that the judges have picked. This is a slutty song, and probably one of the reasons that Crystal did not win AI last year. The AI viewers are more wholesome than this, and won’t vote for this.. even though they love Haley – they will pick “I hope you dance” above it. I love Haley and will vote no matter what – but she needs to NOT do the version that Crystal did last year for the finale or it will be her finale on Wednesday!! Haley BEWARE – it is a TRAP! Love you girl!!

  352. Let’s see…Haley has sung about a whore house and now this one that she’s going to have to omit half of the song because it’s too offensive for family hour.

  353. I agree – the grammy orchestral version is beautiful.. she should not sing it angrily either.. and she should not sing the first verse about doing it in the theatre or having his baby – just sing another verse Haley!! please.

Haley – you are the BEST!

  354. Yes Haley(her song is a loser–imo) has been given a challenge too……Lauren seems to be the Finalist with an appropriate song……makes me wonder if ….aww shucks nevaH mind I am sure the judges have the BEST intentions for aLL 3 kids.

  355. I agree – the grammy orchestral version is beautiful.. she should not sing it angrily either

I can hear it sounding more fragile and hurt, and that could be an interesting vibe for it.

  356. I wanted to say something more about the song choices. My faith in Scotty’s ability to make this song work, does not necessarily mean that I love the choice itself. I do agree with others who have said that all three of these song choices are quite uninspired. They deserved much better. However, there will be other songs for them to sing. These are just the judge’s picks.

I don’t love the Alanis Morissette song for the reasons that mozart stated so well. However, Haley has shown a good deal of versatility and could do it a different way. This song does have problems with the melody and I agree that it’s not a singer’s song. Haley will infuse her performance with attitude, but it will be interesting to see if she can make this work.

  357. Is there any song Haley could be given that none of her fans would think is an attempt at sabotage.

None of the songs chosen were great picks in my view.

  358. This is a slutty song, and probably one of the reasons that Crystal did not win AI last year. The AI viewers are more wholesome than this, and won’t vote for this..

Um, didn’t Crystal sing this at the finale after all the votes were already in?

I haven’t caught up on the entire thread, I will. But initial thoughts are these are terrible choices all around. I guess they thought ‘hey, Haley sings better when she’s angry, let’s give her an angry song?’ Horrible. They could have given her something jazzy to show off her voice or something current like Jar of Hearts. Not quite the penguin song, by awful.

Scotty is way too young for his song. Why don’t they think about these things?

Lauren’s song is just annoying. Probably the best choice of the three but that’s not saying much. Even if she sings it well, it’s just blah.

  359. This is a slutty song, and probably one of the reasons that Crystal did not win AI last year.

    A) I think of it more of a girl-done-wrong-and-now-she’s-angry song. She had a man who had promised to love her until he died (i.e. what she would have thought was a life-long monogamous relationship). She’s not the one who left him and replaced him quickly thereafter with somebody else. He’s the sluttier of the two.

    B) HOTRS is about a whorehouse and it didn’t seem to hurt her chances. I Who Have Nothing is about somebody who is in love with somebody who is with somebody else. Again, did not hurt her. She sang “Call Me” for movie night and that song was hardly about wearing purity rings. The movie it comes from that qualified it for the theme is American Gigolo (a movie about a male prostitute). I honestly don’t think anybody is thinking that she’s advocating prostitution or stealing people’s men with these songs. They just appreciate a well sung song and that’s why she’ still here.

    C) Crystal did not lose because she sang a duet of YOK with Alanis on the finale. Voting for the season had ended hours before. The duet, like all duets with musical guests, occurred on the last results show of the year.

I think it’s the best song choice. It is a famous song that most will have heard, there are lots of ways to present it and there are lots of emotions to work with. Plus, it will stand out from the bland offerings foisted on the other two. AND it’s age appropriate unlike the songs-meant-to-be-sung-by-middle-agers given to the two teenagers.

  360. I was showing my 26 yr old daughter an acoustic version of YOK that had the lyrics to it and she revealed something funny to me. She and her friends loved this song when they were young teens but the verse that goes, “It’s not fair, to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me”, she thought it was “cross-eyed bear”!!! I laughed and laughed on that one!!

  361. I love Haley and will vote no matter what – but she needs to NOT do the version that Crystal did last year for the finale or it will be her finale on Wednesday!

I agree with you on this- but not for the same reason. First, as somebody pointed out, it was on the results show of the finale, so the votes were already in. The acoustic version is so much better, and if people are looking for Haley to have a moment- that could do it. But I kind of get the feeling that they have the arrangements in place already (retreads of previous years) and say “here- this is the arrangement you are going to do.”

The ONE THING they could have done to make this show so much better this year (besides having the judges actually judge) would have been to loosen the purse strings and buy the rights to some new material.

  362. The thing that is hardest for me to understand is why would tptb want an all country finale? The should know this will p**s
a huge portion of their viewers off and they just won’t watch. I know I won’t. I’d think they would want to buss Scotty to assure the CO Lauren would have a better chance of winning. But it’s a little too late now. I suspect they never thought Scotty would be this popular and was just a novelty act that would go the way as KLC, Sanjaya etc.

I agree with all the problems of YOTK but the words are not the major problem. I’ve heard it sang as “do you think of me when you KISS her” and the change that Crystal made last year to “go down with me to the theater”. I think the comparison to Crystal will hurt her as well as it’s not a singer’s song. Hopefully, people remember that a) this is not her choice, the judges picked it for her and b) she has two other songs that I hope are better choices for her. (not dissing the song, love the song).

For me the finale last year had two moments, when Brett walked out to sing with Casey, and Alannis walking out singing YOTK with Crystal. The rest was pretty boring. Hoping they have my favs (James, Casey and Paul) doing a duet this year.

  363. All I know is that the judges spent all season criticizing everyone’s song choices, and this is the best they can do?

Scotty: At least give him “The Gambler”

Lauren: Taylor Swift’s “Teardrops On My Guitar” or “You Belong With Me” would have been perfect

Haley: If you’re going the Alanis route, give her “Hand In My Pocket”, but an even better fit would have been Christina Perri’s “Jar of Hearts” or Sheryl Crow’s “Strong Enough”

  364. Plus, it will stand out from the bland offerings foisted on the other two.

Kirsten, I so agree with you. I didn’t know….*You Ought to Know*..:/….but after checking it out, I think she will do well with this. The other two songs are so bland….this song should kick some butt! (of all the songs Scotty could sing, why would you pick one that is for an older person. He is a great story teller when he sings but it won’t be credible this time!)
I would love to see an all girl final….I think Haley and Lauren have the strongest voices and it would be fun to see them *fight* it out…although, Lauren is going to have to get in the game and grow some confidence!

  365. All I know is that the judges spent all season criticizing everyone’s song choices, and this is the best they can do?

    BINGO! ITA!

  366. In my wildest dreams, Haley would spin Alanis the way Alanis spun Fergie… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRmYfVCH2UA

Or flip the preordained all-country finale on its head with this countrified melodic cover… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaREMNAkt3c

Actually, this would be a great time to pick up the mantle from James and add some performance. The first half could be slow, poignant, melancholy, seated on a stool, slowly building the rage to the second half, kick the stool over, prance around the stage, strobe lights flashing, all rocked out, almost headbanger style. I feel Haley could pull this off, but the judges would object with “it’s just not you, which lane are you in?”

  367. 3 songs each…two about seeing what they can do with songs foisted on them by other people. Nothing they, or us, can do about the choices, whether from the judges of Iovine. What will be interesting is how all 3 can create something with songs that are not really in their bailiwick, more about how they interpret material that is pretty foreign to their real lives. Singers are not always given something to sing that is about them…they need to be able to reach out and find a mythical place to sing about. At this point in the competition the songs shouldn’t be easy…their task should be difficult. Spoonfeeding these guys stuff doesn’t help the audience identify who really has the goods.

  368. The songs are all fine and they’ll all sing them well. They’re just lazy choices and it shows me the judges have no imagination.

  369. I’d think they would want to buss Scotty to assure the CO Lauren would have a better chance of winning. But it’s a little too late now. I suspect they never thought Scotty would be this popular and was just a novelty act that would go the way as KLC, Sanjaya etc.

The bus could still come for him this week. They are already having Lauren sing the song he whiffed (will they remind us of that?). They can edit his hometown visit package down to stupidity (or at least the clips they show before the songs – two hours is a lot of time for that kind of stuff). Better yet, show Lauren visiting the storm-damaged people in her area while showing him whooping it up at proms and baseball games (selfless saint vs heartless, feckless kid). They can mess up his feed. Damn him with faint praise (while looking pained). Stick him first, again. Rave about the feel-good-story of having an all-girl finale (look voters, you can be enlightened and vote for the girls! Or you can be a sad-pathetic old woman and vote for some goofy kid just because he has a penis!…but not in so many words…things like “I hope that people don’t forget to vote for you just because you don’t remind them of their grandson or because they want to date you. You deserve to be in the finale” – said to the female contestants).

They successfully bussed Melinda top 3 night. They knocked out a surging Elliott. They crushed Syesha like a BUG! TPTB theme song – Never Say Never!

I suspect that they did cast Scotty as the foil for Lauren. The person who would help draw in additional country fans and hand them over to her when he was eliminated mid-pack. I think they thought they damaged him enough in Hollywood and that he would be “John Stevens Part II”. Fun for a while, but people would eventually turn on him and his deep voice and awkward teen boy ways. They probably didn’t expect their sassy girl to wilt or Scotty to appeal to non-country fans (being so traditional). People talk about him being pimped on the View, but that was more about pimping the new judges. Probably the best reaction we got out of Tyler all year.

But, things have turned out a little differently, so perhaps they will just let things run. Who knows. Maybe they think people will turn in to vote for Lauren just to thwart that Scotty? Maybe they want Haley in the finale for variety (or an all girl finale). Maybe they just want us fuming at our desks and seeing conspiracy theories behind everything. Well, played Uncle Nigel. Well played. He’s back. And he’s in it to win it!

  370. The question is whether Scotty is unbeatable or not. If he is running away with the voting, they may try to get Haley in the finale for diversity, and bus Lauren.
Otherwise, I agree that he could be bussed.. or they think that Lauren can win and they’ll bus Haley.

  371. The best part about this new era of instant media is TPTB can’t prevent what really happened at all of these homecomings from getting published. Love that.

  372. If TPTB try to bus Scotty, they should use some finesse in doing it. Their usual clumsy, heavy-handed manipulations are too transparent. The public seems to have finally caught on. In Scotty’s case, they may “engineer” themselves into precisely the situation they are trying to avoid.

  373. Haley gave a real rock concert in Chicago, I don’t know how they’re going to contrast her confidence, sass and experience to Scotty being bowled over by a real country singer in Josh Turner schooling him, or Lauren’s “I’m afraid I’ll miss the high notes” lack of confidence on her homecoming performance.
But I have no doubt the AI edit won’t be very flattering to Haley and they will pimp the other two, of that, I have no doubt.

  374. By Lauren having perhaps the best (most generic) pick, they may have actually put her at a disadvantage in the end.

All my votes that went for James last week will be going to Lauren this week, and I hope it helps her to the final 2.

I really can’t stand Haley; I feel about her the way many feel about James – her voice grates on my nerves andI absolutely HATE the growling.

I love “I Hope You Dance” and think Lauren will do it proud! I think Scotty is a lock, but we may be surprised and it could be the two girls – I still want Haley to go home.

  375. I just love all the conspiracy theories about how AI is able to manipulate the voting habits of thousands of viewers. I personally don’t believe that the American viewing public is as gullible as they are made out to be by AI bloggers and media writers. I still think that a large portion of AI voters vote for the person they like the best without regards to how the show decides to present them the last few weeks.

The American public isn’t going to automatically think the best idol is the one who visited a relief site, nor are they going to be swayed negatively because a 17 year old was “moved” that one of their idols chose to show up at their concert. We, the viewer, just aren’t as mallable as some think…people really do have heads on their shoulders.

  376. Is there any song Haley could be given that none of her fans would think is an attempt at sabotage.

Probably not, since you will always get at least 1 person thinking that for any song choice for any finalist. For Scotty and Lauren, they’re constantly fighting against the “that song’s too old for them” thing, and I’d bet there’s at least one fan of each who wonders if their song choices are an attempt to “bus” them.

Looking back at some of the songs Haley has sung on the the show, it surprises me, with only 3 years age difference between Haley and the others, that people are generally OK with her singing about the full range of adult emotion and experience.

My general view: the songs are OK, but not great. Haley’s got the better lyrical theme, Scotty and Lauren have better tunes. Like the idols themselves, the judges didn’t show much brilliance in their picks, but maybe like the idols, they had a short list to work from. And it’s only one song of three. Hopefully, the others will be good.

With little time to prepare 3 songs, this round always is interesting in that it can reveal who is most creative and who is stuck with going by the book.

  377. We, the viewer, just aren’t as mallable as some think…people really do have heads on their shoulders.

I generally agree, but I do think that they can sway voters if they’re too lazy or heavy-handed. Uneven judging probably goes largely unnoticed, but it would not surprise me if last week’s extremely obvious heavy-handed judging didn’t send some non-voters to the phones for Haley.

I think people were already noticing that this year, the judges have been largely just praising all performances, good or otherwise. People tuned in early to see what it would be like without Simon, so they couldn’t help but notice that. So when the judges did start handing out criticism, it was also noticed, and, as you say, people think for themselves, and had to notice that it wasn’t across the board. Haley (and a few others) would get slammed, deservedly, for their problems, but other people’s problems were largely ignored by the judges. I think, that kind of thing can influence votes.

  378. for their problems, but other people’s problems were largely ignored by the judges

And the fact that James was given little but rave treatment by the judges, pimp spots galore, extra sit-downs, cute family photags, an extensive back story with his “I just want to be able to afford diapers for my son”, camera shots of his emotional moments when his friends left, etc. etc. the voting audience was still smart enough to decide that he didn’t have all the “ducks in a row” to be the next American Idol.

Obviously the remaining 3 idolettes have a supportive voting entourage…if they didn’t they wouldn’t be where they are. And as for Haley, just now, getting people to vote for her. Well, gosh darn, the online community was screaming for her ouster when she became the last poppy blond left standing after the semis. The consensus then was that she was ripe to be soon departed. How fast the tune changes when she started to stick around.

  379. I think the judges just do their best to pick songs that won’t be too bad for the singer. I don’t think that they intentionally pick poor songs for someone they want to disadvantage. I think that Paula honestly thought that Terrence Trent Darby song she picked for Danny Gokey would be something special and new, not a dud, for instance.

Haley will have the biggest challenge, especially if she gets another rocker-girl song from Iovine. Scotty’s song is SUPER DULL, and Lauren’s song is no challenge for her at all.

I’m really intrigued as to what Jimmy Iovine picks for them.

As for their own pick, they’ll probably all fall back on a song they know if they can. After a quick look at the hometown visits and the songs they sang, it seems that Haley has a wide repertoire to choose from. (And boy can her Mom sing it.)

I laughed and laughed on that one!!

aprilfoolish is IN IT TO WIN IT!!!!!!!!!

That’s very cute. I personally think the song sucks and is a lousy choice for Haley. Of all the songs in the world, they choose this whiny, angry, tuneless song.

Well, if anyone can make something tuneful out of this piece of crap, it’d be Haley Reinhart. However, if she changes the “melody” too much, the Dawg will criticize her for it. Best of luck on this one, Haley.

  381. I’m not sure if giving Lauren “Nuts of Wonder” is even a bus. And I wonder if Lauren really is TCO. I don’t think they’ve treated her that differently from Scotty, and if they did, I really don’t remember it. I still think Scotty is running away with this thing, but I’ll still be voting to make sure.

Lauren’s actually 3rd on my power list for this week, as she has kinda lost her mojo and was Bottom 2 when she got some of it back.

They could bus Lauren by using the word “complement” in her critiques and making her come off as an airhead. I’m still laughing and shaking my head about it :P.

A Scotty/Haley finale would be most ideal. Two different people who have been peaking at the right time. It would be better than last year’s with Crystal as the only good one there.

A Scotty/Lauren finale would be boring, but watchable. Country hoedown final 2, I’ll live. Love me some country, but this is kinda an overdose.

A Lauren/Haley finale would be awfully boring and unwatchable.

    Nice issues:

Iovine’s choice: He chose “You and I” for Haley and I think it was a pretty good choice in hindsight, although very risky. He chose the Theme from Midnight Cowboy (Everbody’s Talking) for Scotty and I thought it was brilliant. I read that he had a relationship with Stevie Nicks, so how about “Landslide” for one of the contestants. I have higher hopes for Jimmy’s choice than these judge choices.

Artist’s Choice: I hope Haley picks something from her jazz/blues side rather than a diva or Michael Jackson song. Her version of the Duffy song was great and I am in love with her Oh Darling. Or Moanin’ as a solo.

Haley’s Mom: For the finale, I would really get a kick out of her getting her parents up to sing a song together. It would likely be the highlight of the parents musical careers and be both entertaining and touching.

  383. So far, the judges’ picks aren’t really getting me very excited for Wednesday night. Lauren and Scotty both have boring choices, while Haley’s pick is a good song, but totally ill-suited for her style. Hopefully, Jimmy’s picks will be much more interesting, because I don’t see either Lauren or Scotty being risky enough to step outside of their safe country zone (not to mention the fact that Haley has shown some questionable judgment at times as well).

If I’m being brutally honest, I’m going to have a hard time keeping my interest this show over the next couple of weeks- primarily because I cannot stand a large chunk of country music. Sure, there are a few Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson songs on my iPod, but that’s really the extent of my interest in the genre. Keeping that in mind, if I got the chance to choose songs for these contestants, I would probably choose songs for both Lauren and Scotty that were outside of the country box. This would allow both of them to show more versatility and creativity then what has been seen so far. Haley, of course, has displayed a far greater range, so the challenge here would be to find a song that would suit her unique voice and personality. Here are some picks for each of the contestants:

    1. Scotty: God Only Knows, The Beach Boys- A classic pop song that lends itself fairly well to a country treatment (both Glen Campbell and Natalie Maines have covered it in the past). Honestly, this could suit both Scotty and Lauren pretty well.

    2. Lauren: Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Cyndi Lauper- Lauren is running the risk of looking too deadly serious with her song choices, and there are few songs that exude “fun” more than this one. Miley Cyrus did a cover of this song, so there’s no worry about it translating over to a country twang.

    3. Haley: Because the Night, Patti Smith- I wouldn’t be surprised if Jimmy picks this one for Haley, given that he produced the damn thing. I picked this song for Haley during Rock and Roll Hall of Fame week, and think that it would be a perfect match for her voice.

  384. Could somebody refresh my memory? I thought Artist’s Choice was when they picked a song they did earlier in the season and performed it again. Or is that the finale? Or am I hallucinating entirely (which is always a possibility)?

  385. I thought Artist’s Choice was when they picked a song they did earlier in the season and performed it again. Or is that the finale?

halo9125, that’s the Finale. Top 3 ‘used‘ to be Individual Judge’s pick, Contestant’s pick, Producer’s pick.

Now they are trying to convince us all the Judges agreed on a single pick for each contestant – I don’t actually believe it at all. I think they’ve turned the Judge’s pick into a cover for the Producer’s pick – so no one has to take the blame, and because these are much more in the Shite Category of Producer’s picks of the past, while Judge’s picks at least would have some individuality. These retreads and old chestnuts are the old men of the PTB talking. IMO.

Iovine is the Label talking – so his choices, while unknown, could have that commercial direction.

Contestants choice may tell us who they really think they are – but it’s the chanciest category, always has been, if they try to use it as a counter to the odd songs they’ve been handed.

I’m already confused about Top2 – have to go find the post and see WTH is going on –

TPTB can always stir everything with a stick – so it’s easy to start questioning one’s memory.

    IMO.

  386. Why is it that the country kids are always being criticized for not singing out of their genre when it is OK for the others to stick very close to their comfort zones.

I don’t think it is OK, unless they have a wide comfort zone. Pia and the other ballad belters certainly got blasted (and rightly so) for staying in that groove. If James had only done metal, or Casey only jazz, or Paul only Americana, or Haley only blues, I bet there would be those who blast. Instead, they, and others (including Lauren, IMO) have shown an interesting range of styles, with some pop, soul, soft rock, country rock, R&B tinged pop, ballads, etc. Different for each, but a nice range that shows who they are, and they are people with some versatility.

Scotty and Pia, to pick on two of the best voices this year, took just about every opportunity to show some ordinary amount of range, the amount you’d need to make an interesting 60 min. set, for example, and instead of showing that range, stuck right in their narrow groove. Pia worse than Scotty, and that’s why she’s gone.

Now Scotty doesn’t need to get totally out of country, but he’d do well to show that he can do something with the neighboring genres.

  387. Now Scotty doesn’t need to get totally out of country, but he’d do well to show that he can do something with the neighboring genres

I still don’t understand why he needs to. You don’t hear country fans exhorting the other idols to sing country to prove they can sing something else….Adam wouldn’t touch that with a ten foot pole and didn’t. Besides, not all of Scott’s tunes have been country….but his voice and his southern accent are always going to sound country…even singing an Elvis tune. People don’t want him to sing something different they want him to “sound” different…to drop his twang and his drawl and comfortable southern voice. That is like asking James not to wail on his high notes, or for Haley not to growl.

No one can convince me that Lauren, or James, or even Haley have gone out of their comfort zones…they may have sung slower or faster, growled more or less, but they still sing their style. For them it seems to be OK because their style is often genre-less and not as easily identifiable.

  388. satchvai, having been at Haley’s concert and having seen extensive media coverage of her events, it’ll be interesting to me to see how they spin her hometown visit.

I would love to see Haley perform with her parents on the show, too.

  389. Tess says:
No one can convince me that Lauren, or James, or even Haley have gone out of their comfort zones…they may have sung slower or faster, growled more or less, but they still sing their style. For them it seems to be OK because their style is often genre-less and not as easily identifiable.

I think Haley’s comfort zone is pretty wide, so you may be right. Seriously, she’s covered virtually every modern genre from traditional urban pop (Alicia Keys, Whitney Houston); to Country(!! — Leann Rimes and the duet with Lauren last week); to Blues Rock (Janis Joplin), to top 40 (Adele and Gaga); to 60’s ballads (HOTRS and I Who Have Nothing); to 70’s Ballads (Carole King, Elton John); to 80’s punk pop (Call Me) to Motown and 50’s Jazz (Moanin’). What’s left, Polka and Reggae?

  390. Maybe they just want us fuming at our desks and seeing conspiracy theories behind everything. Well, played Uncle Nigel. Well played. He’s back. And he’s in it to win it!

Yep – because, if nothing else, the chatter has greatly increased this year.

  391. I am not sure Haley has a comfort zone. She is definitely the most versatile of the three left (maybe of the entire season) but I have always been okay with singers staying in their lane. From what I have seen, those who have had the best post-idol careers have been those the surest of what kind of singer they want to be while they were on idol.

  392. Usually you have to wait until the finale to vote against someone. But this week you can actually vote AGAINST an all country finale. Food for thought.

  393. Saw this on twitter – not sure if it means anything

Jimmy Iovine’s choice Lauren Alaina “How Do I Live” (LeAnn Rimes)

  394. Usually you have to wait until the finale to vote against someone. But this week you can actually vote AGAINST an all country finale.

You can also vote AGAINST blondes, females, people whose first name ends in the letter “Y”, and people who come from states with names that end in an “A” (or people who don’t come from a State with a compass direction in their names!)

  395. These tweets sound bogus to me – what do you all think – not sure if this has already been posted – sorry if it has.

Personal Choice Scotty McCreery “What Hurts the Most” (Rascal Flatts)

Jimmy Iovine’s choice Scotty McCreery “You’ll Think of Me” (Keith Urban)

Personal Choice Haley Reinhart “Feeling Good” (Cy Grant

Jimmy Iovine’s choice Haley Reinhart “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” (Eurythmics)

Personal Choice Lauren Alaina “Give Me One Reason” (Tracy Chapman)

Jimmy Iovine’s choice Lauren Alaina “How Do I Live” (LeAnn Rimes)

  396. These tweets sound bogus to me – what do you all think – not sure if this has already been posted – sorry if it has.

Eh. At this point, who cares if they are real or fake. They are something to speculate about.

Personal Choice Haley Reinhart “Feeling Good” (Cy Grant

IDK Haley. That song got not one, but two, contestants eliminated one night in Season 6. It even sent Adam to the Bottom 2. Treat this song with caution. As Leslie was given to remark during her sing-out of this song: “America hates jazz”.

Jimmy Iovine’s choice Haley Reinhart “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” (Eurythmics)

That’s not really a song. I love it, but it’s not meant for the Idol stage. It’s more about the cool music. Two songs pitched pretty much on one note for large portions of the song (this and YOK) is probably not a good idea.

Personal Choice Lauren Alaina “Give Me One Reason” (Tracy Chapman)

LOL. Okay, now I know the list is fake.

  397. Ballads are not “genre’s”.

They weren’t asking Pia to suddenly affect a twang and sing “Redneck Woman”.

They just wanted her to sing songs of different pacing and preferably modern ones in the genre of her choice when given the opportunity.

A few have suggested Scotty or Lauren need to remove their accent and sing a different genre. That isn’t the same thing at all. I’m not against singing songs outside of their genre since Idol used to expect that in the earlier years but even back then they didn’t expect Josh Gracin to work to remove his accent. He was a country singer singing songs that weren’t country if the genre demanded it but still with his country tone.

  398. Rascal Flatts and Keith Urban are on the pop side of country. It’s possible Jimmy could select a pop/country singer for Scotty but I wonder if Scotty would select Rascall Flatts for himself.

  399. Personal Choice Scotty McCreery “What Hurts the Most” (Rascal Flatts)

Jimmy Iovine’s choice Scotty McCreery “You’ll Think of Me” (Keith Urban)

    Wow! A trifecta of depression.

First, he spends his life in bars trying to have a career in music while his women stands by him. But, then she cheats on him, so he tells her to leave. Then, he’s feeling lonley being in an empty house.

Will he commit suicide at the end of the third song? Maybe she should have let him keep the cat.

Surely, Scotty would sing at least one song faster than a dirge.

The only good choice on that list is the Iovine song for Lauren.

LOL. I love these early lists. So much fun.

  400. I’m not against singing songs outside of their genre since Idol used to expect that in the earlier years but even back then they didn’t expect Josh Gracin to work to remove his accent.

What accent, Josh is from Michigan – guess he had a lot of people fooled.

  401. Lucy1234, @teamreinhart has the same two for Haley. Feeling Good by Cy Grant and Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) by the Eurythmics as Jimmy Iovine’s choice for her.

  402. Maybe they gave Haley a list of songs to choose from, and “Feeling Good” was the only song on it?

  403. Last year top three only had two songs I thought. Crystal did “Maybe Im Amazed”, and Come To My Window, Casey did “Daughters” and “Alright” and Lee did “Hallelujah” and “Simple Man.” No producers choice until finale.

  404. Last year top three only had two songs I thought

You are correct. During the Dark Days of Ken, he had to reduce the number of songs sung so that we had more time to listen to the judges blather on and on. Top 5 and 3 weeks, he cut one song each. Top 4 night, he converted one solo to a duet (so 6 songs instead of 8).

With Nigel back in charge, we get more songs. Imagine that! A singing competition with songs. Ken is still scratching his puzzler.

  405. Those songs have to be false. I love wild and stupid crazy song choices, but there’s a line. Scotty singing 3 depressing ballads, what’s next, his shirt magically reads “NOBODY UNDERSTANDS ME (-_\\\)”? Haley gets a bitchy song, a somewhat cursed song Adam Lambert famously did, and a really obnoxious song, and Lauren gets two safe song choices and one that doesn’t fit her at all.

    This can’t be right.

This makes me want to post my own joke list.

Scotty: Jimmy Iovine’s choice is “Sure Fire Winners” by Adam Lambert and personal choice is “Fantasy” by Mariah Carey

Haley: Jimmy Iovine’s choice is “Fat Bottomed Girls” by Queen and personal choice is “I Love You” from Barney

Lauren: Jimmy Iovine’s choice is “Through the Fire and Flames” by Dragonforce and personal choice is “Friday” by Rebecca Black

  406. Besides, not all of Scott’s tunes have been country….but his voice and his southern accent are always going to sound country

Everything he sings sounds country because he sings it all as country. It has nothing to do with his accent: Taylor and Chris have southern accents and neither one sounded remotely country. Deep voices are rarer (or seem to be), but you find them in other genres besides country.

Sure, other people stuck to their comfort zones, but my point was that theirs were wider, so fewer complaints. No one expects people to hit every genre and style, but for tv, we find some range to be entertaining.

And I understand your point about outside idol, people don’t expect country stars to sing other stuff. But idol is different. James would have gotten the same complaints if he had turned every song into metal. Likewise Casey and jazz. It won’t matter, because Scotty has enough fans anyway to get to the point of signing. But idol fans are used to seasons that force some versatility, ergo the complaints by some viewers. It’s not an anti country thing, IMO

  407. jammasta, you need to tweet them. Then we can time how long before they flood the Internet and get back here. Always good fun.

  408. I’m really hoping those song lists spoilers are bogus.

I suggest you don’t believe it until you hear it from MJ. An impeccable judge of idol rumor and gossip.

  409. Where did those songs come from? I really don’t think they are correct. I can’t see Scotty singing 3 straight ballads. And, Lauren choosing Give Me One Reason.

  410. jammasta, you need to tweet them. Then we can time how long before they flood the Internet and get back here. Always good fun.

    OH MY GOD. You’re brilliant.

Umm…. I just did it. TIME TO BRACE FOR IMPACT!

  411. jammasta please don’t ever change! Hee! What’s scary is that if those choices are even close to real, then there is probably a lot of truth to what you said. ;)

  412. jammasta please don’t ever change! Hee! What’s scary is that if those choices are even close to real, then there is probably a lot of truth to what you said. ;)

I don’t even want to think about what would happen if even one of my song choices turned out correct.

I’m followed by a ton of Scotty fans since I tweet about him almost infinitely (I think my mind, while straight and masculine, secretly hides a very hormonal teenage girl), so here’s hoping one of them notices! Then I can get my 13 seconds of fame as “that asshole who posted totally fake spoilers”.

  413. I’m followed by a ton of Scotty fans since I tweet about him almost infinitely (I think my mind, while straight and masculine, secretly hides a very hormonal teenage girl), so here’s hoping one of them notices! Then I can get my 13 seconds of fame as “that asshole who posted totally fake spoilers”.

you are so weird. and funny. I admire your devotion to Scotty! loll… I’m on the fence now that James is gone… I think I’m rooting for Lauren.

  414. I think one of Scotty’s songs should show his humorous side, and country is full of those.
my personal favorite would be “I wanna talk about me”
but “King of the Road” would be a good throw back one.

A side note on the subject of sounding country: I remember hearing country music in Austria which was unmistakably country, even though it was sung in German. Not even English, let alone southern accent. Strangely, the singing still sounded “country” – must be something about the phrasing. I wonder if I could find anything on youtube.

ETA: omg, I wish I hadn’t gone there. I’d forgotten how hilarious/creepy that stuff sounds. That probably means that Johnny Cash’s German recordings are around, too.

  415. you are so weird.

I embrace the weird. Call me Lord GaGa.

Anyway, back to song choices, I’m curious as to the order by which these songs get picked. Do the judges, Jimmy Iovine, or the contestant choose first? This could be interesting to know. IIRC, Kris Allen said he knew his personal song choice at the beginning of his homecoming. If the contestants choose their songs first and then the judges/producers, we could analyze the bus really easily (i.e. They knew Haley’s personal choice, so Jimmy Iovine and the judges chose iffy song choices to bus her >_>), but the performance night may be much less interesting.

Or is the order just arbitrary? (I hope I used that word right >_>)

A side note on the subject of sounding country: I remember hearing country music in Austria which was unmistakably country, even though it was sung in German.

…This is extremely intriguing. I would love to hear this.

Someone retweeted my fake Scotty spoiler O_O. I’m a bit scared.

  416. so here’s hoping one of them notices! Then I can get my 13 seconds of fame as “that asshole who posted totally fake spoilers”.

    It’s good to have goals!

Personally, I’m in favor of anything that confounds the twitter=news equation

  417. Twitter didn’t even budge. Maybe I should’ve been more patient.

  418. If those are in fact real song spoilers, I think the bus has come for…well, all of them, and Thursday night they’ll be announcing the return of all of the previous 9 seasons’ runners-up for a 2nd chance finale. (Damn…I don’t know if I’m ready to put 4 hours into voting again, I’m out of shape.)

  419. Wow… If those song spoilers are true, then yikes…

Where do I even start with this one? At a first glance, Haley looks to have the best song choices of the night, but that may be my personal anti-country bias talking here. Feeling Good fits her like a damn glove, but Sweet Dreams? That’s not exactly a singer’s song, to say the least. Maybe Haley will live up to her status as the VFTW pick and sing the Marilyn Manson version? (j/k, Haley fans)

Lauren was given he unfortunate task of two country-fried Pia ballads, and then chooses Give Me One Reason as a counter-punch?! Don’t get me wrong; I admire her for taking a risk here (unlike a certain other contestant I’ll get to in a minute). However, this song is way, WAY too mature for her to sing. What, did Bonnie Raitt not clear any of her songs for this week? That is a grown woman’s song, and Lauren hasn’t exactly shown that she has the emotional maturity to tackle it. Plus, it doesn’t exactly help that all three of her songs have been done to death on the Idol stage.

Scotty’s choices can be summed up in one word: BORING. It’s not as if he needs to take a risk here, but at least don’t give us essentially three versions of the same lame-ass ballad! Ugh… Here you go, Idol producers; this is going to be your winner. All the changes that TPTB made for this year did was ensure that a contestant can win this show without EVER stepping outside of his or her comfort zone. Scotty never ONCE has bothered to lift a finger to stretch himself, and he’s going to skate to an easy win. Great…

  420. The Tracy Chapman song for Lauren makes me think that these choices are somewhat bogus, but stranger things have happened. If they are true, then I believe that Haley benefits more from the combined effect of the three songs than the other two and Scotty benefits the least (i.e., humming one note for the entire show).

When you throw in the video from the home visits, I’m not sure how all of this will play out. Haley and Scotty did full fledged concerts while Lauren seemed timid. The Josh Turner visit is sure to make the edit and should play well. I hope that Haley’s parents make the show, because that’s a great story too.

So, you put it all together and set it up for a 2 hour show, and I think that the contestant that doesn’t put us to sleep wins the show. None of the songs slated for Scotty are ‘pimp slot’ worthy, so he’ll probably run through the season without having sung last. I’m betting that honor goes to Lauren this week.

  421. Lots of buzz on Twitter about these song choices…they look suspicious, but nobody is stepping up to refute them or debunk them…

I cannot see Iovine giving a singer with the range of Haley a song that essentially contains a total of four notes within the range of a fourth.

This song is the epitome of a narrow range, and the judges have used narrow-range songs as a reason to bus contestants before. “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” was long considered a cursed “Idol” song–after all, it eliminated two straight contestants in 12th place–because it essentially contains three notes. But then, Lauren got away with it this year. Maybe Dianna Agron reversed the curse. Who knows? And who can forget Ayla Brown going out after singing a very narrow-ranged Natasha Bedingfield song?

If these songs are true–let the Haley Reinhart bus meme begin anew with full force!! None of those songs seems primed for a moment. One has a narrow range, one is flat-out cursed, and one feeds the “bitchy” persona…

ETA: Vote for the Worst now sharing the spoilers, and they are usually pretty careful about that–but they admit that there is no credible source.

If he wins, will that be a first in AI history, that he won w’o ever having had the pimp spot?

Seems like the bus is coming for everybody. Scotty is singing three depressing dirges. That’s not going to win him any new votes.

He’s only the second person to make it to final 3 without getting the pimp spot (Jasmine was the first in S3 – she was eliminated 3rd with never having gotten it). So, yes, he would be the first winner. If he makes the final 2, he has a 50-50 chance of winning the coin toss, but the kid seems to think he always needs to be gallant so he might pull a “Blake” anyway.

    S10: Haley 3 (1D), Lauren 1, Scotty 0

For seasons with duets (8-10), S indicates how many Solo Pimp spots on duet nights and D indicates how many duet pimp spots on duet nights (since people seem to argue which ones count).

For final 3 night, 7 out of 9 contestants who sang first were eliminated (Jordin and Archie survived), Syesha was eliminated singing 2nd and Melinda was eliminated singing last.

Even for Lauren? The rap I’m seeing on her set is “sleepy overall.” I’m guessing that for a good closing, if these spoilers are correct, Haley is going to have to get pimpage again as far as song order.

  425. You guys realize those song spoilers are probably fake, right? They started on wiki and have no credible source whatsoever.

    Speculate away…but I’m just sayin’

I love those guys but actually…no, really they aren’t.

  426. Even for Lauren? The rap I’m seeing on her set is “sleepy overall.”

Yep, hers are very sleepy, but she gets out of dirge territory because “Give Me One Reason” and “How Do I Live” are in major chords. All of Scotty’s feature minor chords.

LOL. These would all be funny if true. “Fugitive” style train wreck extraordinaire!

  427. Although I have a fave contestant this season (Scotty), I like all three. I do not think the judges did any of them a favor with the song choices…

However, at least I will REMEMBER these finalists! lol I have total amnesia about last year’s top 3 show & finale…when I try to remember, my brain just rewinds back to Adam (I think that says a lot!) ;)

Thanks, Kirsten, for the detailed breakdown! :D

Wow, hats off to Scotty if he achieves this!

Plus, looks like if either Scotty or Lauren win, they’ll do with as few pimp spots as Kris Allen (2), if not fewer. So hats off to them both for their track record on Idol!

I don’t consider Kris’ top 2 as pimp spot, since he won the coin toss. We’ll see if Scotty will get pimp spot or not this week, at least his audition was shown in it’s entirety and he was actually seen in Hollywood.
