Kristy Lee Blogs – In Between Coffee Bar Gigs

Ok, this is what I’m sayin’.   Arista can’t set up better gigs for Kristy Lee Cook than this?

“American Idol” finalist Kristy Lee Cook will present an acoustic show at Cuppy’s Coffee, Smoothies & Catering, 6416 Carlisle Pike, Mechanicsburg, from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight.

The country singer and Oregon native finished seventh in the most recent season of “American Idol.” She released her major-label debut “Why Wait” on Arista Nashville in September.

Cook, accompanied by a guitarist, will sing five songs. The cafe’s doors will be open for customers and passers-by to listen.

So what’s next for Kristy Lee? Busking in the streets? Could be. According to her latest MY SPACE BLOG!!! her next stop is San Francisco:

Seriously, Arista, why sign an artist only to leave them to twist in the wind? Poor Kristy Lee, who has only sold 14K of her debut album …Why Wait in two weeks, might be distraught, as she’s taken to SCREAMING at her fans in My Space blogs.

She just got done shooting her video. Let’s see. A girl and her horse? It’s too easy.

  1. According to her latest MY SPACE BLOG!!!

    This deserves a captial HEE!

Isn’t she going to tour with some great acts though? That should help…maybe.

  2. She just got done shooting her video. Letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s see. A girl and her horse? Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s too easy.

LMAO. She’ll be riding her horse in a sparkly top while the American flag unfurls in the background. BECAUSE ITS KRISTY. That’s just how she rolls.

  3. Sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be riding her horse in a sparkly top while the American flag unfurls in the background. BECAUSE ITS KRISTY. Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just how she rolls.

Dangit people stop! I’m trying to eat my lunch and I keep choking! *giggle*

  4. awww…poor KLC, seriously Arista what was the point on sing here and then ignore her?… I hope she gets more support…if this were Jason,Cook or Archie we all will be in war with the record company…

  5. omg, I totally missed that it’s in Mechanicsburg. Hilarious! I grew up 5 minutes from Mechanicsburg, PA. It’s a tiny suburb of Harrisburg. Carlisle Pike is a basically miles and miles of ugly strip mall. I can’t even imagine how a major label recording artist would get booked to perform in a franchised coffee and smoothie shop in Mechanicsburg. Look for her in your local McDonalds next! She probably could have gotten a better gig before Idol.

My mother actually lives about 2 miles from the famous Cuppy’s Coffee and I’m visiting her tomorrow. I kind of wish I could make the trek to PA tonight to see KLC’s big debut. lol.

  6. I think Kristy is more suited as an independent artist. Gigs like these would be less embarrassing and more realistic for a budding country singer like her. I’m sure she could have paved her way someone, she doesn’t need to be humiliated like this.

  7. poor klc. i really do feel bad for her. too bad her record label couldnt send out emails to everyone telling them to buy her single/album. lord knows she needs it more than anyone.

  8. I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t even imagine how a major label recording artist would get booked to perform in a franchised coffee and smoothie shop in Mechanicsburg.

I saw Bo Bice do a short acoustic set at a rinky-dink retro cafe/restaurant back when he was still signed, but that was a special radio-affiliated show. Maybe that’s what this is?

  9. The thing that’s the weirdest to me is that she’s doing one coffee shop a million miles from her home town and a million miles from Nashville. I could understand if she had one gig in her hometown, somewhere she used to work, a county fair where her grandma lives, somewhere like that, or if Arista had her do a small try-out in a bar in Nashville where industry pros are known to lift a beverage. But a coffeehouse in Mechanicsburg PA? The who with the what now?

  10. Maybe thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s what this is?

That’s what it is. From the article:

Listen to BOB 94.9 (WBRT) during the afternoon show to win a pair of tickets or stop by the restaurant to register for a pair.

That makes it less pathetic, but it still seems a little low rent.

  11. Here appearance at Cuppy’s might not be as dire as you think. It’s not uncommen for up and coming country artists to do small radio promo tours in both small and big markets. You appear in some rinky dink bars and restaurants and get interviewed by the local country station. Once the video is out she is sure to be featured on GAC and CMT and things may pick up. If not, it’s back to the horse farm for KLC.

  12. “sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s taken to SCREAMING at her fans in My Space blogs.”

hahahaha i could barely even get through that blog. wow.

  13. I was just on Kristy’s MySpace and she’s left a couple of other notes on there today. One in the comments section and one is just a note she’s got on her front page. She also has a schedule of her radio stops up now as well. Good for her…If the label isn’t going to do much for her at least she’s trying to promote herself as best she can through her MySpace. She appears to be trying rather than sitting around feeling sorry for herself so good on her. Oh and she added some new pics as well that feature a couple of other idols if anyone is interested…She’s got a “Brand New Photos” album and in it there is a picture of her and Jason on a plane and there are a few pictures of her and Carly that feature the two of them riding horses and sitting on a bull.

  14. Maybe she also filmed her video near there. (There’s a lot of horses in the middle of PA.)

Did Bucky play any gigs like this? Coffee shops in tiny towns? I’m surprised Mechanicsburg even has a country station, unless it’s out of Harrisburg.

ETA: The station is out of Harrisburg

    http://www.bobradio.com/main.html

You’d think they’d have her play in a bar or a venue right in Harrisburg.

  16. A smoothie shop in Mechanicsburg PA? WTH? Why did they even bother signing her if this is all they’re going to do with her?

  17. Did Bucky play any gigs like this? Coffee shops in tiny towns?

I don’t think he played in any places as sad as Cuppy’s Coffee Shop during the early days of his post idol career although I do recall seeing pictures of him playing a radio station concert in the midwest in a half empty conference room.

He was lucky that he got on the GAC Christmas Tour when Buddy Jewell broke his arm and that was before we was officially signed and before “A Different World” was released to radio. He got a lot of early exposure to country audiences who might not have known him from Idol. I also think that Lyric Street was very shrewd about choosing a first single that had big appeal to aging baby boomers (again another group that might not have watched him on idol).

  18. This is a case of them thinking they knew better than the general public. I mean how could a pretty, curly haired, slender, country singing blond miss? We don’t care how low she placed, she’s gold……except she really wasn’t. So if you add up her early departure from idol, the lackluster reviews, no fan driven buzz, horrible first week sales numbers, what do you get? Coffee bar gigs in Mechanicsville. Sad but true. Sometimes all that glitters isn’t golden. While I wish all idol alumni good luck, creme usually rises to the top……

  19. This makes me think of what Carrie Underwood has mentioned (not her exact words :grin1_ee:, ) that she treats each new opportunity the same, which is a good way of looking at it. So should be good for Kristy.

Also, couldn’t help but think (since you use initials here) that she should be happy her parents didn’t name her Kristy Fran Cook……KFC :tongue_laugh_ee:

  20. I guess I don’t see how Cuppy’s is any sadder than a half empty conference room…maybe even happier. To me it seems that she’s signed but they’re making her do it the old fashioned way…earn it. She is certainly tenacious and I give her major props for that. I just wish a bit more time was spent on her album.

  21. I totally agree with abbysee. I feel sorry for Kristy in some ways and I do admire how hard she is working but I just don’t see a great talent there. I always felt like it was a shame that she made the top twelve over some of the others who were sent packing. I believe she skated by on her looks and the sympathy that she was sick for a few weeks. ( I’ve since found out that Archie was very sick some weeks and others also) I do think she is a sweet girl and I hope that something breaks for her since she seems to want this so much. I hope this for her fans also and I hope I don’t hurt your feelings when I snark because that is all in fun.

  22. I wonder just how tenacious was she? When her prior deal fizzled, did she go the smaller venue/coffee bar route? Or did she just try idol? I mean that is a crap shoot, but it doesn’t show tenacity.

I mean not everyone who is signed to major record labels succeeds, even with he idol affiliation she might just be another one who doesn’t succeed.

  23. In that case, maybe David Cook is the only tenacious one on Idol this year. He was the only one giving it his all to be a musician. Or maybe Carly. She was giving it the old school try. Does that make any of the others less worthy?

I think she’s working hard now to make it work. I think she sees her chance and is trying however she can to make it work Maybe she didn’t in the past, but she is out there trying to promote her album. I don’t know that she will make it. Hell, I am not supporting her, but I give her props for doing what she has to do to make it.

  24. I don’t know…I still think it’s a little early to write her off. Things look pretty rough right now, but she could turn it around.

  25. I think she could too. Country is so much more supportive than other genres as fans…I think she’s doing what it takes and time will tell.

  26. I wonder just how tenacious was she? When her prior deal fizzled, did she go the smaller venue/coffee bar route? Or did she just try idol? I mean that is a crap shoot, but it doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t show tenacity.

When her deal went poof, she moved to Nashville and tried modeling while releasing her own independent record. That famous music video with the confederate flag was from her self released CD. I don’t know how long she stayed there, but the impression I had was that she kept at it until all opportunity dried up, then she moved back to Oregon.

Just in response to this…Kristy has talked about her past experience working as one of the headlining artists at that Cowboys chain (she’s referred to it as a honky tonk bar) in Texas. I believe she spent 4 years in Texas performing at these bars/clubs after her initial deal as a teen didn’t work out. And she got that independent cd out as was mentioned above. So regardless of what one thinks of her talent level, I do think it’s safe to say she’s been pounding the pavement and working at this for quite some time now just as Cookie, Brooke, Michael and Carly had been doing prior to trying the idol route. So yeah, I think she’s pretty much kept at it since her deal fell through.

I hope the gigs get a little bigger and better in the future for her but I’ve never gotten the impression that Kristy thinks fame or fortune is owed to her so she’s probably fine starting out with gigs like this and working her way up. She’s got a good attitude and seems appreciative of this opportunity, I wish her luck.

  28. Isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t she going to tour with some great acts though? That should helpà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦maybe.

I hope so! I hope it’s just a matter of getting her name out there!

    Whereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Mechanicsburg? Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve never heard of it before.

There is a Mechanicsburg not too far from where I live! I would have loved to go and see Kristy Lee there! She was by no means my number 1 idol this yr., but it would have been fun! However, the one she’s referring to is in another state.

Oh well, maybe another time, another coffee house!:)

  29. I’m not a huge KLC fan, but that’s just wrong to have her playing in coffee houses. What the hell? They can’t do just a little better than that? I admire her positive attitude though.

  30. MJ, you asked about Bucky’s touring. I’m sure he’s had his ups and downs, but I saw him before his album even hit the stores, and posted my recap here:

    http://mjsbigblog.com/?p=2081&cp=1#comment-61627

LOL. I think I saw one of his first shows. It was fun. He’s coming back to the same venue in December. I hope I can convince my friend to go again. :-)

I think KLC is getting the short end of the stick. Bucky’s smaller label got him better gigs before his album even hit the stores. Could be the market. Or maybe KLC’s label thought the AI name would sell albums by itself (wouldn’t be the first time). Not sure.

  31. In that case, maybe David Cook is the only tenacious one on Idol this year. He was the only one giving it his all to be a musician. Or maybe Carly. She was giving it the old school try.

IMO most of the idols this season have showing lots of tenacity, of course we could argue that Carly, Cook, MJ, Brooke were trying to make it the old way before trying for idol… but KLC took a chance on idol, and now is fighting to made this opportunity work… Archie has to overcome his sickness (vocal paralysis) and you could argue his strong shyness… Castro has to decide to really dedicate to music as he describes his love/hate relationship with music, etcà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ all of them are deservers of a chanceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ I wish all of them the bestà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

  32. I still don’t get why her label would sign her only to do this. I hope thinks pick up soon for KLC.

  33. I used to get freaked when I would read about talent like Jon Peter Lewis from Season 3 playing an acoustic set in Borders Book Stores. Not anymore. Not since I’ve thought it through.

I think it’s good to play a small gig and let folks get up close. They can get a good impression, then spread the word like wildfire.

  34. If Christy’s appearance was sponsored by a radio station, I don’t see anything wrong with it. Lots of radio stations have promotions where they invite artists to perform at small places for their listeners. Seems like a win-win. The radio stations have people listening in to try to win passes to the performances and the artists get publicity and more plays on the stations.

Daughtry played at some small places for radio stations when they started their promotions. So did Elliott. Actually, they both played in metro Atlanta for radio stations’ promotions for listeners. I didn’t try for the Daughtry passes but I tried like heck to be the lucky caller to win passes to see Elliott. I didn’t win the passes but I listened to that station a lot more than I would have otherwise just for the chance to win them.

  35. Let me wrap up Kristy Lee’s past, present and future. Her first deal was when she was just young and not committed. Since she has performed many, many times at about every opportunity she has had. She has done many charity events as well. She stayed in Dallas until her contract with her old manager ran out as a requirement of Idol was they could not have a manager. Since idol tour finished up, she has been doing a radio tour hitting as many cities as they did on idol tour. As far as her album not taking long enough, what you don’t realize is that during idol tour, she and the record label have been picking music. this takes hours and hours. Once they go thru that process, they get the musicians to learn the music. She learns the music on her own time. All this takes months. Once all this is done, all she has to do is go into studio and to the cuts. Her voice is so pure and clean, it does not take cut after cut. She is great in a studio. but even a week in a studio is 12-15 hours a day and sometimes more than that. It is smart the way everything was done throughout the time she was traveling, however it was hard work and taxing on her voice.

She did not get all the songs she wanted on the album, but she will have more and more say as time goes on. She has worked so very hard and spent many hours traveling, being on the road, signing, and interviews. She is a pleasure to be around, in studio she works hard, smart and is fun as all get out. She deserves so much for staying country when she was so pushed against it on idol, and she went down holding on to what she believed in. I give her the utmost respect, and know with her looks, voice, personality and support she will make us all proud. She already has me.

  36. Whoa, almost forgot, She has sang on a venue with Martina McBride, is currently working on a tour with a big name, and is currently doing a gig for Simon (not cowell) but the producer for idol in the bay area. A great gig, then she continues her radio tour again. Her video will be out in a few weeks and from what I know it is very cool. As far as riding in white or whatever, sorry, not quite.

  37. Thank you for clearing all that up, Bruce. I’ve always liked Kristy Lee. I never quite understood why she was always getting the bum rap in the internet blogs. I wish her the best.
