Kris Allen Recording In London, Working with Adele, Script Collaborators

Kris Allen headed to London on Sunday to record more tracks for his upcoming album, Due to hit stores on November 17.

Today Kris twittered hints about a mystery collaborator, and invited his fans to guess who it could be:

@KrisAllen4Real: riddle to see who im working with: breakfast food. thats all you get.

Ha ha. Turns out the mystery collaborator is Eg White (get it? hee), who has co-writes on albums by Adele and Duffy. His co-writes include the Grammy nominated hit single “Chasing Pavements” from Adele, plus, “Delayed Devotion” and “Hanging On Too Long” on Duffy’s debut Rockferry. White also wrote songs for Will Young (winner of Pop Idol) and Natalie Imbruglia.

Kris told MTV that he would be working with producers, Andrew Frampton and Steve Kipner while he was in London. Frampton and Kipner co-wrote Kris’s latest single, “Live Like We’re Dying” and “Written All Over Your Face” another song from the album.

Currently, “Live Like We’re Dying” is #34 on the iTunes overall songs chart, up from its mid-60s position over the weekend.   The song’s Friday release was a little unusual, but today, iTunes has it listed in their “What’s Hot” section.   The little bit of publicity is   helping to drive the song up the charts.

I hope it does well. Cover, scmover,   I think it’s a good song.

  1. phew, you’re back! And this was just what I was being excited about before it went down.

This seems like a really good collaboration for Kris and more importantly, for me :) it increases the chances of Kris making music I will want to buy/enjoy.

  2. I agree with you MJ, it is a really good song. It’s a little different than I expected, but I bought it! I love love love Chasing Pavements, so I’m glad he’s working with that writer.

  3. This is the best Kris news so far!! Eg White is a great choice for Kris!

  4. Boy oh boy…..Kris and his team have 2 to 3 weeks to get his album finished and out…he isn’t going to have a second to promote his single so it better just blast out with no impetus from the artist and really no promotion until he gets his album out. Guess that is why everything has been pretty low key for the last week or so.

Everyone is just going to let the single roll along under its own steam until the album wraps….so no one should expect it to do well on the charts for a bit. Besides, other than a few over-invested fans that think it has to be moving up the charts and the spins with a bullet while settling into the number 1 spot, everyone else understands that slow and steady will win this race. If it gets enough air play to become a tad bit familiar…the single/album push at the end of October should propel it into higher and longer lasting territory.

Patience is the ABSOLUTE key for this year’s crop of idol fans. If fandom can’t stand the heat they need to move on…because there isn’t going to be a lot of fire power going on for a bit.

  5. Between this news and the sound of LLWD, I’m getting pretty excited for this album :)

  6. LLWD has 4 CHR/Pop adds this week according to All Access:

    WXXL-FM Orlando (#34)
    KLAL-FM Little Rock (#85)
    WHHD-FM Augusta, GA (#110)
    WXYK-FM Biloxi (#155)

  7. This is great news! Finally, something to chase the butterflies out of my stomach, after the past few worriesome days. I love Kris’ voice, creativity, and overall vibe, and am so glad for this promising news.

  8. that’s the complete twitter threaad:

@raqqers Eg white… whats my prize?? YOU WIN!!! i never said anything about prizes. you think you dont know him but you do. look him up
about 3 hours ago from web @abh83 EGG WHITE SCRAMBLE? this is the closest so far and its really close. too close

about 3 hours ago from web low fat breakfast food. whoever gets this right i am going to be really impressed with

about 3 hours ago from web @MandaFa OMG!!! YOU ARE WORKING WITH OJ SIMPSON!!! LOL….but no

about 3 hours ago from web in reply to MandaFariddle to see who im working with: breakfast food. thats all you get.

  9. Eg White has some super successful credits on his resume, so I’ve got my fingers crossed for this collaboration.

Although I’m still not thrilled about the promotion or lack thereof Jive has given to LLWD (so far), at least 19/Jive has helped Kris work with some really interesting collaborators, which should bode well for his album.

  10. I agree with you Tess. Where would he find the time to promote it while in the big rush to finish the album. He’s in a complete race mode with this coming fast deadline of mid October

  11. Sounds like a good collaboration to have .. I love Adelle .. but I also love Will Young .. he’s my favorite out of all the Pop Idol/X Factor winners .. I think he’s very underated and I love the stuff he’s done with Eg White.

I’m an Adam fan primarily and haven’t really shown that much interest in Kris’s music so far but I’m going to give his album a listen when the snippets become available and I may just buy it.

  12. Thanks for the update MJ, I actually love the new song wasnt sure at first, but now can’t stop playing it!! I am glad that Kris is going up in the rankings as well!!

  13. Eg White, that’s awesome news! I’m really liking a lot of Kris’s writing collaborators. The only one I was eh on was Claude Kelly. Lindy Robbins and David Hodges don’t always come up with the amazing interesting stuff but they’re usually good to listen to.

  14. Woot!!! This is awesome news! I was just getting to post on this when we lost mjs! Glad you’re back mj! I agree, the single’s a good, solid song and the whole cover issue is a moot point imo.

In fact, I have a feeling it’s going to grow organically! Hee! ;D

  15. Kris is working with some good people. I read a quote from Eg White, and he sounds like he has a philosophy that’s similar to another one of Kris’ collaborators, Mike Elizondo. White sounds like one of those people who is interested in helping artists find their voice, not in giving them one. I love that Jive isn’t trying to mold Kris into who they want him to be, they are allowing him to be the artists who he wants to be, and that’s how artists achieve long-term success.

  16. I love Adele and Duffy – so pleased to hear he is working with Eg White. Probably will have some soul/soft rock/alt sound.

  17. This is great news!! I also love “Chasing Pavements” and Duffy’s album. But I am a huge Will Young fan and “Leave Right Now” is a beautiful song.

I hope this is a sign of the direction Kris’s album is going to take.

  18. Just listened to “Chasing Pavements”. Really a pretty song. Maybe a cool ballad is what they are working on a la ANS.. that would be really awesome!

Patience is the ABSOLUTE key for this year’s crop of idol fans.”— TESS

To quote Kris Allen, “Exactly. Exaaaactly.” Well said, Tess. Propelling to #1 on the strength of an Idol fanbase initially looks impressive, but it’s about future revenue as well. Jive, I’m sure, is looking at long term success. Every business sets up a forecast — short term, mid-term then long-term. They’ve done their homework.

Idol history shows that successful singles do not necessarily sell albums.

David Archuletta’s single Crush sold like gangbusters, but for some odd reason his next single floundered. The album is a slow burner selling more at Jordin Sparks’ rate of sales. Her album eventually went Platinum.

David Cook’s Light On did well in first week sales – apx $109,000. A bit lower compared to DA’s $166,000. But Cook’s album has already gone platinum and is headed toward 1.5 million in CD sales. Cook’s singles were the slow-burners, eventually going Platinum and joining other “record holders” for their longevity on the charts.

I’m keeping the faith and looking forward to Kris’s CD.

  20. Didn’t Cook’s single, Light On, climb the ITunes chart more quickly than Kris’s single has? I think Kris might fit in contemporary Christian music very well, kind of a Michael K. Smith. Also, why would his record label ever agree to let his first release be a cover of another band’s song, which sounds a lot like the original, btw.

  21. Although some of his songs might cross over into the contemporary Christian market, Kris has said multiple times he isn’t interested in doing CCR stuff…he wants to do pop/rock

  22. This clip is hilarious, Kris is not a good actor and that’s why he has no poker face. I saw it somewhere on the internet and I read it’s one of the numerous clips they used in their missionary work.

    LLWD is now
#30 on TOP 100 chart (US)
#15 on POP 100 chart (US)

#7 top 100 pop chart (FIN)
    #14 TOP100 CHART(FIN)

    #93 TOP 100(CAN)
    #46 pop(CAN)

  23. I agree girlygirl, some songs may cross over, but he’s right where he wants/needs to be. ;) At this point I’m not worried about LLWD at all.

  24. I just looked at my Itunes New Music Tuesday email, no Kris. Jive should have at gotten him included in that. I know I definitely check out songs from that email!

  25. “Didn’t Cook’s single, Light On, climb the ITunes chart more quickly than Kris’s single has?” –ccagain

Cook’s Light On reached #3 on I-tunes and remained in the top 10 for a time. The single, itself, took awhile to reach Platinum, nearly 10 months, I’d say. His singles are tenacious — Light On and Time of My Life still getting radio play. Come Back To Me seems to be in a bit of a slump, but the way David Cook’s singles run, you can’t always count them out.

We’ll see what happens with Kris’s single. I think with more radio play, it should take off. It’s a worthy single. People who bought the I-tune pass will more than likely not get the single now. If they do get the single, it won’t be included in the “single” sales.

It appears Christian Radio is embracing Kris’s single. If there is a song on the CD that has somewhat of a Country vibe to it, I’m sure country radio will want to spin it. Kris’s music fits many radio formats. Again, surprisingly, I quote Randy Jackson, “Kris has a potpourri of styles.”

I don’t really know Michael K. Smith or Christian music. I do know Kris’s style will never be pigeon-holed in Christian or Country music, though he is versatile enough to fit many genres.

  26. LLWD is up to #30 on the iTunes charts. Slow but steady progress.

I think other songs will have that “Kris” feel (the way Adele’s album does; very organic, genuine). I kind of think that LLWD was pushed out there to have a single b/f the album was done (and released). But Kris has admitted it isn’t his favorite, and I don’t think the rest of the album will sound like it. He has strong collaborators, a very good sign.

  27. don’t know if this what brought up’ ¦

Kris dying with a smile on his face with LLWD playing in the background.. LOL

ha, score! when was this made? from kris’ haircut, it seems a cpl of yrs ago. gotta hand it to his friends, they are a bunch of snarky, funny guys

btw, i never received LLWD via my iTunes Pass. grrrrrrr. no email, nada

and color me crazy, but i would rather kris spend as much time as possible recording and writting with these talented folks, even if it means cutting into the promotion of LLWD. oh, well. i just want a good (respected) album vs LLWD do to well on the charts.

  28. Although I’m still not thrilled about the promotion or lack thereof Jive has given to LLWD (so far),

Actually I think Kris’ single has got huge promos. Wasn’t he on several huge radio programs? That’s a lot more than several singers/bands I follow. Usually they only get a few late night tv show promo when their album release. And I’m sure when Kris’ album drops, he’ll get another round of huge tv promos just like other AIers.

  29. today, iTunes has it listed in their ‘What’s Hot’ section.

I found Kris promotion in 3 places on iTunes- LLWD under the Music/Singles section on the home page, a badge for the iTunes Pass on the Music page, and LLWD under What’s Hot on the Music page.

IIRC, Light On didn’t get much promo early on. David pretty much disappeared between the end of the tour and his SNL appearance on 11/1, which also marked the beginning of the big album promo push. I’ve been expecting the same thing from this year’s crop, aside from Twitter. This month/month and a half is their only time to concentrate on their albums without a lot of distractions, so I’m happy for them to take some time. I think the albums need to be done something like 3 or 4 weeks before the release date.

  30. Oooh, I’m feeling more optimistic every day. Loving the idea of Eg White as a collaborator for Kris. Adele & Duffy’s albums are vocally focused – no bandzilla – the voice is in front, not over-processed or cleaned up, with more emphasis on interpretation & emotion.

Too bad time is so, so tight. But some people do better under pressure. Kris was a mighty cool cuke on Idol, so I’m hoping for at least a couple of good co-written tracks,

Greg Kurstin is a very cool co-writer too. I think The Bird & the Bee are pretty fab, and some of the juxtaposed backings on Lily Allen’s newest album are fun (the gallopy western backing in Not Fair, for example). Kris keeps saying he likes to surprise people…

  31. Does anyone know how many downloads you need to sell in order to get into the Top 5, 10, 20, 50, etc on ITunes Top Songs?

For example, based on his charting, how many downloads would Kris have sold so far?

  32. Didn’t Cook’s single, Light On, climb the ITunes chart more quickly than Kris’s single has?

Yes. “Light On” was released to iTunes on 9/30/08 with almost the identical amout of pre-release promo as Kris has had. It very quickly went to #3 on iTunes, sold 109,000 digital downloads in its first week of availability, leading to a #17 debut on the Billboard Hot 100. It is Cook’s second top twenty hit on the chart. (TOML #3, LO #17)

“Light On” officially went for adds on Mainstream Top 40, AC, and Rock radio on October 13, 2008 — 2 weeks after it was on iTunes.

LLWD was only on sale for Friday to Monday before they starting advertising and went for radio adds. So Jive kicked in the paid promotion very early for Kris. But Kris does have one Top 20 Billboard, the much maligned NoBo peaked at #11.

  33. ha, score! when was this made? from kris’ haircut, it seems a cpl of yrs ago. gotta hand it to his friends, they are a bunch of snarky, funny guys

btw, i never received LLWD via my iTunes Pass. grrrrrrr. no email, nada

Wand3rful, no idea when this was made. Someone mentioned that it was one of numerous clips they used for their missionary work. Don’t get though the relationship with the funny mafia clip!

I had the iTunes Pass too and didn’t get LLWD. It seems only NoBo was included in it!

  34. Sherena: Does anyone know how many downloads you need to sell in order to get into the Top 5, 10, 20, 50, etc on ITunes Top Songs?

For example, based on his charting, how many downloads would Kris have sold so far?

It varies based on what everything else is selling. But for comparison, David Cook was pretty solidly around #3/#4 in the first week and sold 109,000 units. NoBo sold “No Boundaries” sold 134,000 paid digital downloads — that includes units sold with the iTunes Pass as far as I can tell. LLWD has been mostly between #28 and #58 for the past 5 days, so it is certainly not in NoBo territory.

  35. Yeah LO took off stronger and faster but I think that’s mostly because David had a stronger fanbase at that point than Kris does now, and to be honest I actually think LLWD is a more radio friendly song so I can see it picking up steam as it reaches more and more people like Jordin saw with “Tattoo”, which got off to a very low sales start. IIRC LO had like a million streams in 2 days when it premiered on Popeater and TOML had over a million in under 24 hours. When NB went up on AOL the evening Kris won I have no idea how many streams it got but when Billboard magazine had printed the streams chart it seemed to be for about 3 weeks and NB had slightly over 700,000 so a strong fanbase can carry you far to start off with.

I really like the people working with Kris and this Eg White especially seems like a great fit. I think he’s capable of making some really good music and I believe he can do very well if Jive, well, actually does right by him. Not getting him included in the new music e-mail is stupid.

  36. BeckyMD,
Use the one that gives you the #30. Thats the correct one.
    Q3,
Wouldn’t the sales number depend on artists on the chart at the moment? It look s like Kris is up against some tough guns up there on the charts.

  37. He’s at #30 so I’m guessing the other one is out of date.

I can’t explain why though because I just track using the ITunes app on my computer. :) Maybe Q3 can.

  38. NoBo sold ‘No Boundaries’ sold 134,000 paid digital downloads ‘” that includes units sold with the iTunes Pass as far as I can tell.

Are you sure about this? That does not sound correct to me. All sales of Kris’s iTunes pass will count towards his first week album sales – like any pre-release order would. But “No Boundaries” is/was available as a separate single and I am pretty sure that only individual purchases of the song counted towards its overall sales.

Becky – the apple website numbers are outdated. The RSS feed has the most updated stats.

i think Rickey posted this some days back but i’m watching it only now. the last scene reminds me of the scene from the british movie Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels where after a shooting scene everyone dies, including all the shooters. pretty funny.

  40. LOL…Kris’s tweets on twitter are so clever. I love his humor. He is also such a sweet heart.

I wish the best for him.

They are a very cool group. They will root for each other for what they will put out in the music industry. Love this!!

And agree with you, Kris is a smart cookie!

nice of them to show support! has danny tweeted to show support for kris? i dont follow him so i dont know

  44. question! do we have to wait till Nov 17th to listen to some of the songs on the album or will one or two be released (or leaked) before then?

i dont think i can wait a month and a half…and Nov 17th seems so far away!

  45. Kris joined twitter late, but his tweets have been some of the most entertaining to read besides Alex Truggman’s.

Kris has a very fun snarky dry wit which I didn’t notice on the show, not until I started to read his tweets that I noticed he had such cool humor.

I loved the tweets between him and David Cook about the “ice shift” incident. That was such a crack up.

  46. Kris sold 276,000 units of the single No Boundaries. We were never given the total units sold for the I-tune Pass. It appears that the sales for the single No Boundaries is no longer showing up on the I-tune popularity bars, meaning all singles were pulled from I-tune. It looks like all that remains are LLWD and the I-tune Pass w/No Boundaries.

If the “single” No Boundaries remained on I-tunes the popularity bars would be larger than LLWD. LLWD popularity bars have overtaken the I-tune pass w/NoBo. I’m not sure if that bodes well for the I-tune pass sales.

I do know Kris’s sales figures based on 3? days sales will not compare to DC’s 109k or DA’s 166k.

    Music Sales Overall Ranking:
I-tune ranks #1 with 25% of music sales (digital only)
Walmart ranks #2 with 20% (predominantly CDs)
    Best Buy #3 with 16%
    Target 10%
    Amazon 10%
    FYE 3%
    Borders 3%
    Rhapsody 1%
    12% other retailers
*Target, Amazon, FYE, Borders, Rhapsody — data from 2008
The top 3 data from 2009

    In Digital sales alone:
    I-tunes holds 69% of sales
    Amazon just 8% of sales
    23% other

Although DC’s pre-orders were strong on Amazon for a fairly long period a time. A guesstimate of his sales from Amazon would probably be in the family of $15,000 – 20,000 more or less based on his album sales of $283,000. I-tune and Amazon pre-order sales were definitely not the bulk of DC’ record sales.

Much of the CD sales will come from Big Box Stores such as Wal Mart and Target, especially on Black Friday and pre-holiday.

  47. I am a little bit worried, but I hope the single will pick up steam once the radio stations starts playing the song regularly.

I wish Jive would put more effort in promotion (a big banner in iTunes would be nice, they had one for the iTunes pass before, I recall).

  48. It looks like all that remains are LLWD and the I-tune Pass w/No Boundaries.

The itunes pass is advertised with the new single included, but LLWD isn’t shown on the itunes pass page.
Has anyone who has bought the itunes pass received it?

I wish Jive would put more effort in promotion (a big banner in iTunes would be nice, they had one for the iTunes pass before, I recall).

It has got the same promotion as Light On had last year

  49. It has got the same promotion as Light On had last year

I didn’t follow the post-AI events much last year, but if this was really the case, then I worry for Kris.

I wonder if the single will perform better if more radio stations pick it up. I’m curious because I’ve read Jordin’s Tattoo had a slow but steady climb as well…what was the progression of Tattoo in terms of sales and airplay?

I worry all the more because Adam’s singles (the 2012 one and his first single off the album) will surely be released in the next couple of weeks, and I’m pretty sure those two songs will rocket to the top of the iTunes charts. I am already cringing at the comparisons that are sure to come.

  50. I didn’t follow the post-AI events much last year, but if this was really the case, then I worry for Kris.

Cook’s promotion was good, the problem was the single that was not well received initially. Cook had more momentum at release time because TOML did well and he has a bigger core fanbase, but LO suffered of not sounding current, whereas LLWD does.
In a long run, LO did well though, but to be honest I would have been so happy if Cook’s first single had been LLWD instead of LO.

  51. Z100 played LWYD last night. So they may have added it to the playlist.
It’s too early to know how much they’ll play the song but they usually are good at Jive singles at the beginning. But they won’t play it alot if they don’t get a good response.

  52. I just looked at my Itunes New Music Tuesday email, no Kris. Jive should have at gotten him included in that. I know I definitely check out songs from that email!

Yes – I was surprised to not see Kris mentioned in the new music Tuesday itunes emails – and it made me think that by releasing the single on friday (not the norm) he had missed out on this kind of extra PR.

  53. Speaking of Eg White…he also produced some songs for James Morrison(The British singer, not the Doors lead singer) including Beautiful World. Kris has a very similar sound to Morrison and I hope this kind of stuff is what they’re working on, could be some great stuff.

  54. Didn’t Cookie also release the video for LO pretty quickly after the single was released? Does anyone know if Kris plans on releasing a video for his single?

  55. Didn’t Cookie also release the video for LO pretty quickly after the single was released? Does anyone know if Kris plans on releasing a video for his single?

As far as I know there are no plans at the moment for a video. Haven’t heard him working on one either. But maybe when the album is done and his schedule is a little more free, he’ll start working on one.

  56. His schedule should be free enough to make a video! I think it would help tremendously. The more mediums that people can be introduced to Kris and to his song…the better! He’s cute. Can’t hurt. His schedule will only get busier from here…right? Let’s hope so.
