And after the jump, some clever mashups from Kris, “Heartless and Gangsters Paradise” and “Falling Slowly” and “With or Without You”.

Kris takes the Idol stuff we’ve heard over and over again and twists it into a whole new deal.   Very cool.

  1. Thanks for posting these MJ. They are GENIUS!!! If anyone had any doubt Kris is a true musician. Very creative, the way he blends the songs together.

The ending to Heartless when Kris is singing Heartless and Cale is singing Gangter’s Paradise. Amazing. And for the FAlling Slowly mash-up when he just flows into U2 – Chills.

  2. Kris is so unreal. Obviously he was very happy to win idol, but I think AI was lucky also to have this kind of artist in the show.

I kept watching these 2 mashups, especially the Heartless one over and over again.

    Make it STOP. LOL

  3. Just beautiful. The kid who won has some real talent when it comes to arrangement and songwriting. I love the way he is making you feel like a live show with Kris Allen will always have some surprises for you.

  4. Really enjoyed these songs, especially the Heartless mashup and MITM (never get tired of Kris singing this!). Kris and Cale are harmonizing nicely together!! Good job! I wonder how many people were at this event? It feels like an intimate crowd, and maybe that’s why Kris is so chatty (on those other vids posted by girlygirl in the headlines thread–thank you gg!). He looks very happy and comfortable, which makes for a great set.

Why couldn’t he have put this version of Heartless on the album??? :-) [My personal opinion for the album’s version is that it was one of those compromises he spoke of…in order to get RG or INTK on, he had to agree to the new version. Unfortunate, since acoustic Heartless will always be the best version IMHO!!]

  5. Kris picked my two favorite songs he did on AI and proceeded to get creative. Love it. I love it when an ARTIST can change things up, which he did on the show. Kris, once I think I know you, you just delight me even more with little surprises.

  6. Man, this guy keeps growing. Those are groovy. The sideman is good too, the harmonizing adds a lot.

  7. I don’t like the mash-ups too much… they seem a little artifical to me, but I think he sang “Falling Slowly” beautifully!

  8. I can almost feel the response of the audience to him. There’s an electricity about it. He’s established a relationship with them in a short amount of time and he has them in the palm of his hand. There are a few ‘bantering’ videos out there from this event, as well. It all comes across as a great mini-concert. I still think this is a very special person and performer and we’re going to see such great things from him.

Hello Ross….where can I watch these “bantering videos”? Thanks.

  10. Cale is a hunky guy. In one photo he looks kind of like Gerard Butler…lol

    He is so beefy…unf!

  11. Wow. Those mashups are fabulous. Genius was the word I was going to use, too. (Not so much that he IS a genius, just that those mashups are brill.) You can feel when the crowd realizes he’s going into “Gangsta’s Paradise” and it’s an awesome moment. This boy knows how to put together a song and put on a show.

  12. mysan girlygirl posted the links in Idol Headlines earlier in this blog.

MJ, maybe you could add these links? They are very cute. Kris teasing his brother about his hair and joking about Cale’s beard.

  13. I was completely taken aback at the awesome harmonizing on both the mash-ups. It really does make a difference when you have a close friend there with you to support your music literally. Cale and Kris are so in sync that they just make the songs sound better tenfold. The U2/Swell Season mash-up was ridiculously amazing. When I first heard he did it, I was like, “Hmmm does that really work? And it’s U2…that’s tricky.” AND Holy cow, he totally totally nailed it. The songs blended so well and adding the U2 part to Falling Slowly added depths to the song. Kris manages to surprise again, and the fact that he got a standing ovation after that performance? I could sob right now.

  14. Kris deserved the standing ovation. Bravo!!! Kris never ceases to amaze me :)

  15. love both!!! very artistic the way he blends the songs. ‘Falling slowly’ flowing into ‘without you’ is just beautiful.
Heartless and Gangsta Paradise mashup = win. Very creative!
I want badly to see him on tour
Beside those, the night highlight for me is ‘let it rain’ … the video is just awesome

  16. “Kris’s LLWD video is number 9 on Itunes pop Videos”

wow, thanks for the info dhunken. :)

  17. Kris’s LLWD video is number 9 on Itunes pop Videos

Cool! I’m on my way to buy one right now :)

  18. Kris’s LLWD video is number 9 on Itunes pop Videos

oh cool! thanks dhunken. I’ll check on Itunes Canada to see if it’s available

  19. Thanks dhunken I didn’t know it was on itunes yet. Gonna go buy me a copy.

I wish Kris would tweet this stuff and inform his fanbase. Sell, sell, sell Kris. WE want to hear many more albums from you.

  20. I have tried not to cross over into tard-dom, but how much longer can I hold out when he does things like this?

  21. LLWD single is up to #31 on iTunes pop.

Do videos count as single sales?

I have tried not to cross over into tard-dom, but how much longer can I hold out when he does things like this?

I knooooow, right? Performances like these are exactly why I think Kris has staying power in the industry. Not only does he continue to surprise, but he always finds a way to pick songs that people would normally be skeptical about and he just blends them so well in his set.
When he performs like this, with tricks up his sleeve, he will always win people over everytime.

His performance here is perfect – better than he ever was on Idol, better than I’ve ever heard it before. I guess the glowing introduction from the coordinators at the Live in the Vineyard event was a confidence-booster, but seriously, his voice is pitch-perfect, he and Cale are harmonizing like they have been performing together for the longest time (and they pretty much have, since they’ve been friends for years), and the banter was nice to see, because we all know Kris is charming and witty, and it’s nice that we see him sharing that sense of humor with the audience.

  23. ATTN: If you bought the iTunes Pass (NOT the pre-order) go check it.

They have the bonus track listed now.

  24. I have tried not to cross over into tard-dom, but how much longer can I hold out when he does things like this?

    Resistance is futile.

  25. @cookbunny: I just saw that! Color me relieved! I was thinking about just pre-ordering again if it hadn’t shown up closer to the release date. Whew! I’m so happy and can’t wait for the songs to be on my iPod! I hate having to go to AOL to listen to them right now LOL

  26. There was a cute story on ONTD_AI his morning about the event organizers saying (at the concert when they introduced Kris, I believe), that when they finally got the call from 19/Jive that Kris would agree to perform, they screamed 30 minutes straight. The Kris rep had to hang up and when the organizers finally realized what had happened, they had to call 19 back. LOL, so cute. I hope I am remembering the details correctly; I read this account several hours ago.

  27. Eileen: I read that on one of the Youtube video descriptions from the gig. That was so cute. I did love that intro they did for Kris – it seems they really were huge fans of him and I’m glad that Kris got to do this gig. Not only was he able to win new fans from that gig, he also was able to rub elbows with the best in the music industry (A Fine Frenzy, Collective Soul, etc). Radio execs were there too, apparently, so hopefully his awesome performance helps him out on the radio. COME ON, WEST COAST. Get into Kris Allen mode already.

  28. Whoops, I didn’t see this thread. Put in the links to Vineyard vids in the LLWD MV thread above.

Anyway, nobody can deny his voice anymore based on this performances. Pure gorgeousness – simply that. I got them to my IPOD already – has to enjoy them on the bus.

Can’t wait for him to sing INTK, The Truth & Bring It Back live in that sexy voice, audience will just melt as they did in Vineyard (you could actually hear the OOOOOhhs in the background.

    Sigh…

  29. I’m outside watching these and noticed my reflection in my monitor. Huge goofy grin and squinty smiling eyes. Thank God nobody is around to see me. :)

I want this version of Falling SLowly. I missed buying it when it was available on iTunes (darn bank mixup) and I loved both mashups. Incredibly creative and Kris and Cale sound so good together.

If anyone wants to hear the intro to Kris, go to the links Ross posted and look at other videos by the uploader. It’s listed there. Those two women were such fan girls. It’s very cute. THey did make a little (big) mistake saying Kris won by 100 million votes. But we’ll forgive them.

Also it’s funny when Kris thanks the ‘Winer’ instead of vintner for the wine tasting.

  30. I’m so confused! I want to listen and see everything all at once! Do I play the LLWD video I bought today at iTunes? No wait! I’ll listen to the album again. Uh no…I must see the brilliant things Kris did at Live In The Vineyard…again…again…HELP!

  31. I really enjoyed those. I don’t think I’ve ever heard “Gansters Paradise” done quite like that before, but that’s Kris, LOL.

  32. I don’t know what to say. I want to see Kris live soooo badly!!!! And to think this is only what, his second time out, no third right? I want to see him in an intimate type setting like this one too. I’m really curious what they’re going to do about a tour.

Anyway, I’ve been waiting to see these (like many others :D) and they were worth the wait!!!

    Just amazing! Amazing!

  33. thanks eileen99 for the anecdote. very cool! :)

    mzbet…. you’re too funny :)

  34. @cookbunny:

Aaaahh, I had the I-tunes pass and just pre-order last night.

OK, I think that I can cancel the pre-order, right ?
I have to figure that one out, and order the LLWD video while I’m at it.

Ross, aren’t you going to see Kris at an acoustic concert in December (one of the jingle balls?)? If so, you are in for one AMAZING time!! If he performs these songs, it’s a win. And if he performs something new (and amazing), then double win!! You’re so lucky. Really love acoustic Kris!

Maybe you will get reimbursed by iTunes for the duplicate orders.

  37. Can we just have the Kris and Cale acoustic tour? The band is fine, but I love this stuff.

And people thought Kris would be boring live…and I’m may or may not have been one of them…

  38. oh that’s cool that “from the ashes” shows up on the Itunes pass

  39. erinthered, i want Kris and the band on tour (love their performance in Miami) and want some acoustic songs as well being part of his show. I think that will be great!!!

  40. @mzbet:

LOL, yeah, I’m confused too. I’ve been watching YT for pre-idol Kris singing” God in the City” and “The Tower”, now the vineyard videos, while I’m on and off watching my DVR on his idol run. And I haven’t listened to ALL his songs in his album stream yet. And of course I still have to read the comments on this blog too.

Seriously, I wish that I have more time, and Kris haven’t even gone to TV to promote this album. OMG !!

  41. Yeah, I love these intimate gigs with just Cale and Kris. I think the band was important at the Dolphins gig though, because it would have been too low key for a tailgate party. The band also adds extra oomph to Kris’s performance, especially for the more upbeat songs like ‘Can’t Stay Away’ and ‘Written All Over My Face’ . I actually think both those songs sound way better live than they do on the record. But I think this is what’s awesome about Kris though. He can just do a stripped down acoustic set for those who love that side of him, but he can also entertain in a big arena set because of the production values in this new album and the incorporation of the band.

  42. Kris always surprises us. These performances are so amazing! His creativity really knows no bounds. I would love to see him live sometime although I think that the odds of that are not great. I just really appreciate all of the people who attend these events and bring us back these videos to enjoy.

  43. @Starr:

I think that I cancelled the pre-order correctly.
You just have to go to “Store” tab, “View Your Account” on I-tunes and cancel your purchase on your “Purchase History”.
You can still cancel before Nov 17th (I think).

It is no biggy if I have double, but still, I have to purchase another one from Wal-Mart.

Really, thanks for this information cookbunny, I wouldn’t know how to check this.

  44. Oh wow !!! These acoustic songs are just perfect- along with Let It Rain we heard the other day!! The way that Kris & Cale blend the songs together is just amazing!! I really wish he could have had this version of Heartless on the album – maybe Kris did have to compromise on that as someone else said!!
Oh & their harmonies are so beautiful- that was the part of “Brand New Shoes ” that I liked as well & the little duet Kris did with Adam “I remember”. Kris & Cale are like brothers almost- their voices blend so well together!!
Kris’s live shows will be a treat. He’ll be able to have the band for part & then some acoustic for part – lots of variety!!!

  45. Well while we’re talking about concerts, I’ll order on of each. :) The intimate setting with Kris and Cale and the bigger venue with the band. Thanks!!!!

I loved the coordinator’s intro for Kris! They had Parachute, Collective Soul and others, but they were thrilled to have Kris!!!! Love it!!!!

  46. were they closing the concert or starting it or in the middle? Anyone knows?
There were Fine Frenzy too which i like a lot

  47. And with that second video I have officially fallen in love all over again, haha. I didn’t think it was possible, but DAMN. I am making Falling Slowly/With or Without You into an mp3 ASAP.

were they closing the concert or starting it or in the middle? Anyone knows?

It was a series of performances. Parachute and A Fine Frenzy had performed before Kris, and Kris was right before the headliner Collective Soul. Word is Kris was the only one of the opening acts to get a standing ovation (of course, Collective Soul got one too).

  49. thank you Starr for the info. Happy he got a standing O… well deserved!

  50. i noticed that the audience was very quiet while he was singing Falling Slowly (except for some moments when someone near the camera was talking)…. Kris is really singing stronger now and his voice is very clear and pure, as most of you here would say. His performances warrant that you listen and absorb.

Thank you for the videos. Me happy. =)

  51. @dana: I know, when he was singing “Falling Slowly” you could almost hear a pin drop in that place, with the audience being super quiet. Kris is just that kind of performer, though; he pulls you in and makes you want to take in everything he sings. I love the little tweaks he did to “Let it Rain”. I didn’t like that song at first when I heard the full version, but the live version is A++++

  52. The masups are beautiful! They were totally unexpected. Actually before FS/WOWY he said that he will sing U2 or better he ‘asked’ “Who doesn’t like U2, right?” and then someone shouted out, “Yeah!” and Kris was like, “Oh look someone likes U2!” Then Cale said, “You guys should put them on the radio”, but before Heartless/GP he only said that he was doing his last song, the crowd booed and chanted that he should do two more. Then he said something like, “But these are like two songs. You’ll see.” (info from ONTD_AI).

Surprise was always one of Kris’ strongest points. The transition from one song to the other and back to the first one and some of the pauses, which someone might find a little akward, but most of the times were on to the point, had me literally waiting breathless “OMG he stopped before singing ‘paradise’ what is he going to say next?” but he didn’t disappoint at lot. The icing on the cake: the last line of the Heartless mashup: “tell me why are we so blind to see…that we could be so heartless”, very clever!!

Also I love acoustic MITM! It wasn’t his best performance on Idol but now with the guitar is amazing. That song means so much to him that it really shows in his performance.

    Keep it up, Kris!!!

  53. OMG the “oh oh oh” at the end of Falling Slowly + With or Without You…Man, I just got weak in the knees.

  54. Also I love acoustic MITM! It wasn’t his best performance on Idol but now with the guitar is amazing. That song means so much to him that it really shows in his performance.

I honestly don’t think I will ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever….ever, ever get tired of this!!!! NEVER! EVER! Hee! :D

I really hope he does Falling Slowly when I see him. I was hoping he’d do it on the Idols tour, but no, so it’d be great to hear it live at last.

The Worcester concert isn’t literally one of the jingle balls, I guess, because those tend to be like rock concerts. But, yeah, it’s an “Acoustic Christmas Concert”, in what looks like a really nice setting.

I was originally disappointed that I wasn’t going to see Kris rock out with the band, but now I see it’s a great opprtunity to experience his more intimate, acoustic side, which I love too.

I still kind of hope the band will join him and play acoustic, but whatever, it will be amazing, yeah!

  56. thanks mmk28 for the additional info. That was fun to know. Even a lyrics mashup? I’m impressed. Kris is really very talented

  57. I LOVE the guitar in MITM!! This performance was so much better than the one on AI and I loved that one!

  58. CAthyMK,

I wonder if i can find the live “let it rain” to download. Do you know?

  59. these mashups are the coolest thing ever! i’m in awe right now!!!

BTW – he sang Falling Slowly perfectly!!!

  60. A little help for the technologically challenged please–what’s the difference between mp3 and mp4? I only have an ipod shuffle, so no video capability. Which do I want? Much thanks in advance!

  61. A little help for the technologically challenged please’“what’s the difference between mp3 and mp4? I only have an ipod shuffle, so no video capability. Which do I want? Much thanks in advance!

    mp3: audio
    mp4: video
So if your ipod doesn’t have video capability download the mp3.

  62. Loved the mashups and the other acoustic renditions! The kid who won really has some mad skillz. I hope he comes to the Toronto area when he goes on his solo tour next year.

  63. RemusL: LOL @ “the kid who won” :D

I’m itching to see Kris live just to see what tricks he has up his sleeve, like these! I bet it was such a treat to the live audience at the Napa gig when he did these two mash-ups. Had I been there I probably would have flailed really loudly.

  64. OMG!!!KRIS, what you do to me!!!
He sang Falling Slowly PERFECTLY. Oh Gentle Crooner, how you affect me… Love Cale doing the saprano bits for the FS chorus.

And OH MY! Kris’s gentle riffing in Heartless, esp the almost a capella beggining! OMG Speechless, and I LOVE Gangster’s Paradise!
‘How can we be so heartless’ – SMOOTH!!

This man is just so smart. I admire him so much as an artist. It’s so rare to find an artist who is so self aware of his musicality at such a young age. He knows and understands his own abilities so well.

    MUCH RESPECT, KRIS ALLEN!

  65. MUCH RESPECT, KRIS ALLEN!

i read this sentence with the zombie accent…all slow and robotic and in a hynotic stance…but hey, thats what all things kris allen does to us :)

i looovveed both the combinations and wow is cale really good looking or what? and would i have to give up my kris fan ID if i say cale is better looking than kris? hehe

  66. So impressed by the mash-up performances!!! As I said before, the videos dun do justice to his live performances. I find that he’s really a well-rounded performer; equally good in uptempo songs as well as ballads. And with the creativity and surprises thrown in, it’s easy to see why he won Idol:)

Wow, Seeker, you are so right. I just now listened to FS, and it sounds soooo good. Gotta go check out the others now!

  68. Man, his voice sounds wonderful. And better yet, he sounds like no one else — a very important thing in pop music!

He’s just a great balladeer, and I hope gets back to that on album #2

And really really really check out “Man in the Mirror” — his best rendition yet — soulful, intense, great with two guitars — go Tender Idol!

  69. “it’s easy to see why he won Idol:)” I know right, summersnow.

“And really really really check out ‘Man in the Mirror’ ‘” his best rendition yet ‘” soulful, intense, great with two guitars ‘” go Tender Idol!”

Kris’s acoustic take on MITM is amazing. The way he sings it just transforms the song, takes it to just another level. I love his Boston Rooftop performance of this song. That was his 1st non-AI solo gig. I love that performance.

^^^ITA Is there an mp3 link for this version?

  71. I do, hoosiermama, I’d ripped it for myself but I have no idea how to upload it. If someone could tell me how, I’d gladly do it.

  72. Thanks so much for the MP3 download Seeker!!
Kris really does MitM so well. Just love the way he & Cale combine harmonies & guitars to make the performance at the Vineyard so breathtaking!! Love the Whoops from the males in the background. I feel these live performances are also hooking in more males as well as they appreciate the fine guitar playing along with the singing!!
    WTG Kris!!
