Dancing with the Stars pro and Ryan Seacrest ex gal pal, Julianne Hough, was at the Casamigos Tequila party in Hollywood Friday night dressed up as Crazy Eyes a character from the hit Netflix series, Orange is the New Black.
Dressing up as a popular TV character is usually not a big deal, except that Julianne went “blackface” in order to portray the African American character. Nice makeup job there, Julianne. Except NOT.
The photos caused such an online stir, that the dancer/actress took to twitter to apologize:
I am a huge fan of the show Orange is the New black, actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize.
ETA: In late 19th century and early 20th century theater, whites donned blackface to entertain. It was not a homage. It mocked and enforced stereotypes. Wikipedia has a thing HERE if you are unaware. The history is long, ugly and still leaves a bad taste in people’s mouths to this day. No matter the intention, donning blackface in the 21st century is going to create blowback. She doesn’t need to be burned at the stake or lose her career, but Julianne was clueless and insensitive to tan up her face like that. Apologizing was the right thing to do.
