An American Idol Story: MADDIE POPPE (E7)

The latest installment of Disney’s Maddie Poppie digital doc is here. Maddie and friends head to the CMA Festival.

Luke Bryan Says American Idol Is Like Going On Vacation – The country superstar tells iHeartRadio’s Big 95.5 in Chicago he had a “good time doing” Idol’s first season on ABC and adds taking a seat on the judges’ panel requires long but rewarding work days. “The auditions are about 12, 13 hours and they are long but they are fun. It’s so exciting because you are giving people tickets to Hollywood and all that,” he says, “so it flies by. We are locked in and focused on what we are doing.” The “Sunrise, Sunburn, Sunset” singer goes on to say American Idol’s live show is the light at the end of the tunnel. “When we get to live recordings, those are only two hours, so after two months of 12-hour days when we get to lives, it’s like it flies by and you don’t even know it. It’s like you are on vacation,” Luke says. – Read more at iHeart.com

Chris Daughtry says new album, ‘Cage to Rattle,’ is band’s “most mature work to date” – Daughtry’s new album, Cage to Rattle, is out today, and nobody’s happier about it than Chris Daughtry. The band’s been working on the project for two years, and Chris says he’s relieved that, at long last, the music is ready. “It’s such a weight off my shoulders,” Chris tells ABC Radio. “We’ve been talking about ‘A new record’s coming’ for so long that it started to feel like a myth! We’re so glad to actually prove [to] people that we actually have been working on a new album, and you can actually buy this thing!” Making Cage to Rattle wasn’t easy: Not only was the band dealing with issues like scheduling and musical direction, but Chris admits he was “plagued by self-doubt” throughout the process. – Read more at ABCNewsRadio

James Arthur recalls ‘traumatic’ ‘X Factor’ experience

Nod for Disney’s $71.3B acquisition of Fox entertainment – Disney’s $71.3 billion acquisition of Twenty-First Century Fox’s entertainment division is one step closer after shareholders approved the deal Friday. The tie-up brings together Marvel’s X-Men and Avengers franchises and creates an entertainment behemoth in the digital streaming era. The shareholder vote caps a saga that began in December 2017, when Disney made its first offer for part of Rupert Murdoch’s media conglomerate. It kicked off a bidding war with Comcast, which dropped out last week focus on attempted buyout of the European pay-TV operator Sky. – Read more at Associated Press

  1. “would American Idol work as a reality show?”

Um, AI IS a reality show.

  2. A couple of tidbits from Kris’ M&G last night (I got this info off twitter; I wasn’t there, lol)

    1. He was given the choice of being on the bus with the Top 7 or on the crew’s bus. He chose to be on the vus with the other Idols

    2. Going on this tour has delayed things in terms of putting out a new album. He said maybe early next year for the target date on that

  3. First point makes all kinds of sense..in terms of conversation and having the most in common with the people you are traveling with. He’s a musician, a performer, an artist, possibly even a bit of a mentor – and he is in the cast, not one of the tech crew…who have a seperate field of concerns for staging a traveling show…and very different conversations. I never would have expected Kris to chose differently. JMO. ?

Sorry about the album timeline being extended, but who knows, this trip could spark more ideas for new music directions? ?

  4. Nice Build interview with Chris Daughtry, I enjoyed it. ?
    ETA:
I read somewhere this morning that the album was released last night, and is sitting at #4 on one of the charts…good for Chris!

  5. Must be quite a bit of Daja Vu going on with Kris and this tour; riding bus with contestants and doing M&Gs, etc. perhaps he could write a book about the experience, I’d buy it.

  6. Not just one of the performers, but he actually performs with them, playing guitar, singing backup, and having solo parts in their performances. Even being the lead singer in the finale number.

  7. Hmm. It played for me earlier, but now it’s just buffering. I’m in Safari right now.

Ok…it’s back…it’s just a bit of voiceover with his music playing and show footage…He found the process stressful and traumatic, “it’s a pressure pot” – but he learned a lot on the show…and “the oldest cliche is true” – gotta be yourself…

    That’s it. ?

  8. Yes it is a reality show but It is mainly a talent show. I think what they mean by “reality show” would be following the contestants around with cameras where they live and making it about drama and fighting and insults. It is bad enough with the sob stories, that sometimes overtake the talent, but it could be much worse, lol. The Voice is closer to that than idol but I think Idol has been trying to catch up. Idol started some of that with Danny but they have moved more in that direction over the years since TV came on the scene. I applaud those who were able to resist and wanted to make it about their talent, as it is a talent show. But I think now, if you are unwilling to play along with producers exploitation or you have little drama to highlight, you may not get a spot on these shows. TBH, I always hate to see the contestants have to repeat their “situation” week after week, as if no one heard it the first time they told their story. So they to tell it again and again and again. I don’t think it is helpful if you want to showcase and have it about your talent tho.

  9. Perhaps they offered him the crew bus because of the age difference. This is a very very young group.

  10. You have to read the discussion in her thread to follow along and this to make sense.

  11. Maddie has been doing interviews in most of the cities that they go to. She was on Kidd Nation during the TX swing with some other interviews scattered in.

My guess the choice on which bus may have also had to do with the amenities each offered. The performers bus was probably a lot nicer than the crew one.

  12. No, evidently someone in her family claimed she would be performing with him on one of his tour dates (go check out the thread about her most recent song release for more on the discussion)

  13. I see Clark Beckham is playing near by. I may have to spend a few bucks to give a listen.

  14. Yes, that was my point in that litany, perhaps I left it too general. Kris is a cast member and MC, but he could have traveled with the tech crew if he wanted…

  15. I think it was around S7 or S8 where there were rumors that Idol was going in that direction. They were thinking of following the contestants lives in the mansion, behind the scenes stuff, etc. From what I remember, it got so far that they asked the finalists that season if they were willing to have cameras follow them. The contestants nixed the idea. Does anybody else remember this & what season it was? I think it’s S8.

  16. Yep. It was season 8. Thankfully the contestants nixed that idea. Artists complain about an Idol stigma now, lol. What is so funny tho is artists can come from YouTube or Disney shows or UK and XFactor reality and all is good. Cardi B was on one of those VH1 reality shows. Even some Idol fans push the “cred” thing when they try to elevate one over another. In the end the talent will rise no matter where they started, if it is destined and they make a big enough splash. Success and butts in the seats speak volumes when it comes to “cred” and money in the bank. As Adam said in one of his interviews, “why do you care where I got my start?” HA!

  17. I think the point of mentioning Sharaya is that in every clip she mentions her cancer and when its not in the clip it is something in her songs that reference it.

  18. probably a little bit, but this tour is so much smaller and more relaxed than what he went through on the S8 tour. He and Adam both had interviews or some other kind of promo obligation pretty much every day and on the rare off days both guys tended to fly off somewhere to do a recording or writing session.

It doesn’t appear that Maddie has anywhere as near as hectic a schedule during this tour

  19. What?! I thought Gabby was joining the Cole Swindell tour?! ;) << #sarcasm

  20. This is talked about in Gabby’s thread. Basically, Gabby or family members keep saying or posting about news such as touring, big news, how each of her releases having charted in the top 30 on iTunes, etc. Some of her news has already been proven as untrue (Ex. all songs have charted in top 30). People are saying she shouldn’t say anything about possible opportunities until it’s definite because it’s possible she doesn’t get that opportunity or even any of them she or her family has said. BTW, she’s said she has opportunities to tour with Cole Swindell, Carrie (as an opener), & Chris Lane (opener). Posters here have been calling BS on that & other things.

  21. Oh, I forgot to come back to let you know that it did work when I tried Chrome. Don’t know much about James Arthur or the show he came from. Heard he’d had trouble before he made a comeback with his hit, “Say You Won’t Let Go.”

  22. Oh, please! And report back! He isn’t playing anywhere near me, and I can’t travel right now. Too many changes at work. Plus my vacation is spoken for. Otherwise possibly doable as I have East Coast roots.

Also meant to ask how the tap is going. I’ve always wanted to learn, and I’m considering taking lessons, but I think I’d want to sit in on a class first.

  24. I checked. Clarks tickets are only $10. He is playing less than an hour away. I liked him on Idol. I am likely to go. I believe it is in October. I shall report then, perhaps between my hating some Voice auditions. Haha.
I love the tap dancing, absolutely love it. I am taking private lessons. My teacher is a sweetie. She charges next to nothing. I am done fighting with her to take more. If life were better, she would find money hidden in her studio. I think if things were better, I would practice a bunch more as I do truly enjoy it. My teacher says I am a natural. She told me “if you had started when you 6, you would be on Sytycd” It is fun to relive my athletic youth. I have selected a song for the recital in May. Good news, is that I shall not do a recital as fat and out of shape as I have let myself go. Gym again, soon. More good news is that I am far enough along after 6 weeks that we have put a few steps together that will be in the routine. The bad news is that I can not match the beat of the song, with the tap. Hopefully, when I get more comfortable, it will happen. If not, I shall practice the routine until the tap and the song match. Worst case, I shall not be able to hear a song and automatically, tap to it in rhythm. No matter what (Badfinger reference!) in May, either naturally or by a million repetitions, I shall be doing a tap routine, to a song from the musical Godspell. It is one of my favorite songs from my youth, All For The Best.
Honestly, this is the most fun I have had in years. As an infant you fell many times, possibly for many months, before you learned to stand. Tap will be the same, only a shitload more fun. Go for it. Cheers.

  26. Right. I meant it in a joking manner. I am not belittling her illness. I am sick of hearing about it.

  27. I love Clark Beckham. I watch all his youtube videos. He’s a really good singer.

  28. I’m not sure I understand these crumbs the Idol producers are throwing Idol Alumni? A 3 minute song on their live shows would do more to promote these artists than a quick glance of them at auditions? But no they prefer non Alumni on their live shows! Wonder if they still want the Country connection or if the winner will be more organic????

  29. Look forward to you going to see Clark. I’m jealous of the dancing because I have no rhythm (think dancing circus bear) despite ballet lessons as a child until my mother just decided it was a waste of money that would be better spent on something that was not as embarrasing, lol.

  30. It’s been years since performing on Idol actually did much to promote anyone’s music. Not to mention, you have to actually have new music to promote, and not all of these alums have had that during the 3 months that AI airs. And I doubt anyone is forcing Jordin to do this promo. If she didn’t want to do it, all she has to do is say “no thanks”

  31. I got it after certain1 explained as I don’t watch The 4. But now it is not just about the contestants story but the family’s as well. Did the show really need to give us the employment status of Gabby’s dad? Was that information helpful to her or was it used later as part of her beatdown? We weren’t told about the employment status of Kris, Adam, Danny and Allison’s family on the show. If they got a lot of buzz it was because they were throwing down on the Idol stage or they kicked butt on the Idol tour. Now we hear which family is homeless and needs the kid to go far to support the family. And the sad case on The Voice where the young lady was rejected by her family because of her sexuality. It was a very emotional story when it was first told. But then week after week it seemed mainly about that than is she good enough with her talent to overcome her story and to keep people interested. She failed to make it to the finals so apparently not. A story may help you get on these shows but the talent will need to carry you far on the show and help sustain a career.

  32. I dislike nothing more than unrelenting sob stories. There was that big voiced man, who paraded his son week after week on The X Factor. He was the most annoying of them all. A dad who loves his son??????????? Wow, you are an amazing human. There is even a chance, he put his career ahead of being dad, but I shall make no assumption. I do not like big voiced singers who lack both originality and emotion so I despised him in all manner. I have hated every sob story since. Every has their battles in life, some worse than others. It has no part in a singing or talent competition or anywhere, except among friends or in your shrinks office. The Four is a comedic masterpiece masquerading as a singing competition. The bonus is that there have been some terrific vocals too. Plus, if you like rap, there is a young kid, that I am sure will be signed and an older woman with an illness who will likely win the show.

  33. I sucked when dancing, when younger and doubt I have got much better, but I have picked up tap rather quickly. It is a blast. I can not wait to learn more.

  34. LOL!!! I think you are talking about Jeff Gutt from XFactor? Yep, that was pretty funny. He is the new frontman for Stone Temple Pilots. And I agree, there are battles for all of them and some with much harder paths than others to overcome. Hopefully you go on the shows to put your talent out there. Then you take the opportunities given and work hard and hope you have done enough to get noticed and supported. A win would be great but not the end of the story by any means. Too bad some producers try to make it more about the hardships, or what they think will draw the most attention, instead of focusing on the talent.

  36. Still want the Country Connection? Hmmm..?

Considering how transparent and numerous their indicators were last season, we likely won’t have much time to wait for clues that people can speculate from…but how much weight to assign to them is always problematic…limited audience vote, Bobby Bones back, Country theme week complete with Carrie Underwood, uneven buzz for Country contestants…still didn’t get them there.

They *could* invite more Alums who are Country artists for some of these appearances, doesn’t have to be a winner…there aren’t that many of them. They could try some others..but Idol PTB are dropping the ball on the Quid Pro Quo of these things..you have a good point there!

    IMO.

  37. I don’t think they have ever used these alum engagements during auditions for promoting alums later. And I think on screen time (not just poking your head in for a hot minute) for alums with mentoring, guest judging and/or performance slots are going to be very selective and few and far between now. Maybe the entry of Fox talent to the mix will change that a bit but I would not hold my breath, lol.

  38. I took a ballet class as a young adult. Back then I was flexible, so I did quite well with the barre work, but once away from the barre I had trouble hearing and understanding the instructor. It made me feel bad about myself, so I stopped. I had better luck — eventually! — with jitterbug, imperial, and country.

  39. Unless they change the format for the next season, there are no live show performance slots to give out. Normally those slots come during the results show and Idol eliminated the results show. They also made the voting window so short that there wasn’t even room for a performance slot during the vote.

Alums are going to need to be seen during the filmed segments. If that means at the auditions, so be it.

  40. I’m wondering if it’s a combination of a slightly different demo since moving to ABC and the limited voting changed the trajectory of the results. Didn’t most people here think Caleb would win (white male southerner singing country) as the pattern of many past seasons.

  41. I can dance. You put on music, my body automatically moves to the music. What I can’t do is learn how to dance. Ask me to move my body in space to choreographed moves and I’m lost. I’ll be the worst student in the class until half of the sessions are over and then something will click and I’ll stop overthinking it and let my body take over. I also think my hearing impairment is sometimes a barrier to picking things up quickly. To be honest, if I could find an instructor willing to give private lessons, I think that would be my best bet.

Dancing is great exercise! It’s fun, and there are both physical and psychological benefits.

  42. He’s awesome. Did you go?

Edit: Nevermind. I see it’s on October, but you should go if it’s close to your place.

  43. I never really like dancing, just because I’m so bad at it. I’m always so stiff, so I feel like a stone when I try it. Once I went out with a couple of friends and I was dancing with a girl that want to the party, I accidentally headbutted her on the face. Don’t ask me how because I have no idea. She was a girl that I kinda knew so I wasn’t too embarrassed, we just laughed it off. But it’s something that I always wanted to learn. People say it will really help to loosen up more.

  44. I absolutely plan on it. Hope you find a feed for The Four finale. It could be the final episode ever. Think it might by my favorite television show.

  45. “BTW, she’s said she has opportunities to tour with Cole Swindell, Carrie (as an opener), & Chris Lane (opener).”

In today’s response she answered she is supposed to open for Carrie and Chris on tour (with praying hands) so we shall see how this turns out. Hopefully the others will start to post after tour plans soon so we can include them.

Since you have been following this the performance at Heinz field will include the song “Renegade” per her sister, at least its reasonably country.

  46. I wonder if she’s talking about being the local or guest opener at a single show on these tours, not being part of the tour.

  47. Renegade is country? Which version of the song are we talking about?

  48. It’s kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy. You remember the times you’ve danced badly, like the head-butting incident, and that will make you self-conscious and stiff. Try putting on some music when you are home alone, and just sway or bop to the beat of the music. Or not! Most American men are in the same boat, dance-wise, so you are in good company!

  49. Her words… “But also supposed to tour with Chris Lane and Carrie Underwood ” so make of it what you will. :)

I misspoke in my post above and typed Cole instead of Chris, I will fix that.

  50. Yep, it has a gun, a sheriff and a chase. Heck it is practically an episode of The Dukes of Hazard.

  51. I understand those were her (or her family’s) words. I get the sense that they’ve been used to puffing up her credentials for so long that they almost can’t help themselves even now that there’s scrutiny.

Everything is HUGE news. Filming a pilot becomes getting a reality show. Being asked to sign the standard contestant contract becomes being signed by a show. Getting a courtesy visit with a label becomes negotiations.

Sometimes a little bluster and razzle dazzle is ok, even good. Just not all the time!

  52. Sorry if I didn’t make it clear but this was Gabby’s response 7/28 FB (that’s what I get for not pasting the whole thing).

  53. It’s hilarious for sure. I was upset about Ali, but I shouldn’t take this show seriously. Oh well… I’m sure you’ll have a blast on his concert. Also now that I remember, did you go and see Casey James? I remember you asking about him some weeks ago. Britton played in Raleigh a couple of days ago (I have no idea where that is). I’m feeling the sting of living so far away and not having the chance to see a lot of these talents live.

  54. I have similar battles, albeit without a hearing impairment. It may have got in the way elsewhere, but you certainly hear music well. Back to dance, I am the absolute worst learner. I am not stupid. I struggle to follow instruction. There is something about tap dancing (low expectations?) that is different. There is nothing about moving your body. There is no moving to rhythm. You learn to shuffle, to riff to do various time steps, etc etc etc. Sure, you eventually must learn to tap to music. Guess what I am struggling with? Also, I am taking private lessons. I would likely be to panicked to take a class with others. Hope you find a way to take tap. My life has completely fallen apart, but every Wednesday, for one hour, I have a fucking blast.

  55. Kris has a beautiful family, kids, wife, and himself. With that said, the boy looks like his wife.

  56. Oliver does look more like Katie, but he has his Dad’s body language in clips I have seen…maybe Rosie will turn out to resemble Kris? Heh.

  57. I’m so awkard at dancing that It’s kinda funny. My trauma about dancing comes way before that little incident, but I’m sure eventually I’ll find the joy in it. But I really want to learn. Not taking singing lessons is also something I regret. People that I know who are musicians told me that I have a really nice voice but I have absolutely zero technique or know the basics of how to sing Maybe some day you’ll see me on The Voice, who knows! :)

  58. Raleigh is in No Carolina, what we call in the States the Mid Atlantic. Raleigh quite literally may be the mid atlantic as it is almost exactly midway down the Atlantic US coast line. I shall check and see if he is playing near me as he would be playing small venues, that I would not check on. I would like to see him. If I do , I shall pass a hug along. Sorry, that is the best I can do. Cheers.

  59. Hard song to sing. One of my fave reality show contestants Aiden Grimshaw, did not do well with this song. Unfortunately, I do not like Casey’s voice. Sung well. Great song, just not for me. Thanks for sharing though.

  60. I don’t think that the things I want to do if I see him are appropiate for you to pass, but a hug would be nice :). He’s releasing music in August I believe, so I can give you a heads up if you’re interested. I’m sure that if you ever catch one of his shows you’ll have a blast. Besides singing and playing he interacts a lot with the audience, he’s a pretty funny fella.

  61. Not a problem. I really loved his take on the song, but I understand not enjoying his tone. It took me a while to appreciate his voice.

  62. Seriously, thanks for sharing. It is a fantastic song. He sang it very well. IT deserves to be shared. There was something about his voice, that I did not appreciate. Entirely subjective. I would not bash him. I just did not enjoy it.

  63. Hence, the best I can do. I shall check to see where his tour goes. If you ever make it to the states, you had better let us all know. Cheers.
