Joe McElderry Records Carrie Underwood’s “A Place For Us” for Narnia

The reigning X Factor UK winner, Joe McElderry recorded the Carrie Underwood co-write “A Place For Us” for an international release of the new movie, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, according to Joe’s official website.

Carrie tracked a version of the song, co-written with David Hodges and Hillary Lindsey for the American release, set to open on December 12 (and available for digital download on November 16).

It was announced in a press release that international cover versions of Carrie’s song would be recorded overseas in a small number of select countries.

The Swedish pop band, EMD has also recorded a version of the song (watch it here)

Joe will attend The Royal Film Performance and World Premiere of the film in Leicester Square UK on November 30th and switch on the regents street lights on November 9th.

So what if Carrie isn’t performing the international versions? She’s still going to earn those songwriters royalties…

  1. I have to check out what kind of voice Joe Mcelderry has. He can’t be any worse than that Swedish boy band can he?

If Carrie and the cowriters had to write something that fit all these other markets then it’s making more sense why the song is like it is. It’s not going to be my favorite song but get those royalties Carrie!

  2. This is random… why wouldn’t Carrie sing it for all the markets? I know when big movies have internation translated versions of their songs for some big markets, like the Asian markets, but these versions are still in English. It’s weird that they have an English guy and a Swedish boy band sing the same song when Carrie probably sounds great on it already. Whatevs.

I’m assuming the studio wants known popular stars in those markets to be singing the song to help with the promotion of the movie. I’m pretty sure they’ve had people like Imogen Heap and Regina Spektor doing the end credit songs in the previous Narnia movies so even going with Carrie in North America is obviously a big change to go much more mainstream. Since Carrie hasn’t really promoted outside North America she wouldn’t be as known a quantity as Joe and EMD in the UK and Sweden. Another thing is she’s on tour right now so she wouldn’t be available to promote in those countries.

I guess. I read on IMDB that this new Narnia movie, what with the move from Disney to Fox, may be marketed a lot more heavily to shoot for bigger mainstream success than the previous ones. I guess the move from the likes of Imogen Heap and Regina Spektor (both of whom I LOVE) to mainstream stars in various markets reflects that marketing shift. I still think it’s weird =P.

  5. Joe has a good voice but this is a bit of a disappointment. Well I’m glad that at least that we get Carrie’s version.

  6. First time I heard of this guy, asked my friend youtube, and I found out that he does have a good voice – nice tone, more pleasant to the ears and probably a better fit to the song over high-pitched, shrieky voice.

  7. Watched Xfactor last year and he was my pick. Loved him. He could sing anything. I’m happy for Joe.

  8. I’m with Sma11ie. It’s lame. Carrie’s version is amazing. Why not use it to launch her internationally? What happened to the Australia push for her? I mean, it’s not like she’s THAT country. ;)
