Idols In Concert – Stats – 09/08/11

Now with Concert Stats!

Nine more American Idol concerts report in. With 5 more sell-outs, Season 10 passes Season 5 as holding the AI record for the most number of sell-outs (now 23). This report also pushes S10 past having more than twice the revenue of the previous season as it tops $20M in revenue. The lowest attended concert for the tour was the Albany date (at 87%) which was the concert that was resheduled due to the hurricane.

The Voice finally reports a tour date – it is the only one they are reported to have sold out (so they can claim to have a sold-out tour. Take that AI!).

Some articles to debate:

The 2011 Music-Sales Boost, By The Numbers. Album sales are up this year for the first time in years. I had thought they were up because of lots of great new music from Adele and others, but it turns out the sales of current music is already down (but not as far down as they have been down in the past). This article argues that the shutdown of Limewire is what finally started turning the biz around.

Some stats:

The 4.8% improvement is even more amazing when you consider the state of music sales a year ago. Physical albums are down just 4% after being down 19% at the same point last year – a 15-point turnaround. Digital albums are up 19.1% in 2011 after being up 13.5% last year – a nearly 6-point turnaround.

Digital Albums Outsell Tracks for Only Second Time Ever. Partially due to the huge numbers moved by Lil Wayne this week, more digital albums were sold this week than tracks (when you multiply the albums by 10 – TEAs). The only other time this happened was the week The Beatles catalog was made available.

Two big debuts helped digital albums reach the tipping point. “Tha Carter IV” sold 362, 000 digital albums in its first week, representing 38% of its sales, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “I’m With You” also had a strong digital debut. Its 104, 000 digital album sales represented 45% of its total sales.
