Idol Sales News – Week Ending 07/20/14

Buzzfeed reports that Weird Al has his first number one album in his 35 year career and it may be his last. Weird Al has struggled to compete against all the other quick-to-the-market youtube parodies, so he may just release singles in the future. Meanwhile, this article details how he did everything right with this album release and how albums releases can still be an event.

Al’s “Mandatory Fun” opens with 104.7K more than doubling his previous albums debut week. It becomes the first number one comedy album in the last 54 years – Bob Newhart’s “The Button-Down Mind Of Bob Newhart” in 1960. Weird Al’s 8 Videos in 8 Days not only increased sales throughout the week (last Monday’s predictions were in the 50K range), but it was free. He sprinkled his videos across a number of websites who ponied up the money for the videos. The videos have racked up 20M views in their first week. This is his best selling week ever (previous best was 1991’s “Straight Outta Lynwood” with 73K).

Hannibal: I love it when a plan comes together!

Well played, Al!

Okay, this is the weekly sales thread. Please post numbers as you find them. Thanks!
