Idol Sales News – Week Ending 02/22/15

Imagine Dragons manages to hold on for the number one album of the week for both the sales and combined chart. It helped greatly that their sales totals were in the SPS expected range. They far out-sold Drake on the albums front, but he had monster TEAs/SEAs. This is Imagine Dragons first number one album.

As for Drake…dude! Front load those sales. His drop in sales to the second week was 74% which is normal enough, but he only had three sales days the previous week. If he had had the usual six days, his drop would presumably much higher. And there are no pre-sales front-loading it either. Drake has his fans and they buy his album immediately when it comes out, but maybe he only has his fans? He did well on the singles front, so time will tell. Let’s give radio play some time to start supporting sales.

Fifty Shades of Grey slid to third on the chart, but look at the hold-over numbers. They only dropped 45% between first and second week. Impressive. The drop was even smaller on the combined chart because Ellie Goulding’s track from the album is kicking (spanking?) all kinds of butt. It does seem that the producers made up for a thin plot with a deep bench of good songs. I think we might see this album around for a while.

Taylor is fourth again this week while Ed and Sam huddle around her. This week Sam and Ed trade spots between the sales and the combined spots. Maroon 5, Fifth Harmony and One Direction all see big gains from TEAs/SEAs. Carrie? Not so much.
