Idol Sales News – Week Ending 02/09/14

Now 49 not only manages to cool Frozen’s jets and take the top of the albums chart, it also has fairly impressive sales for deepest, darkest February. Now 49 is estimated by HDD to sell 96K which is less than Now 48’s opening week at 114K, but Now 48 was released in the super-heated album market of November. Now 45 was released in February of last year and it opened with 87K. This latest edition to the Now series features One Direction’s “Story of My Life” and G.R.L.’s “Show Me What You Got” (G.R.L. features US XF contestant Simone Battle – thanks eagle-eyed reader JustJam for noticing that!).

“Frozen” continues to sell well seeing only a 6% drop in sales this week. We are experiencing a bit of a movie song Renaissance these days. Back in their hey-dey, songs would be shoe-horned into movies (the disaster movies got quite creative) or featured over the credits to launch them into orbit. I think it’s fascinating that we are seeing songs from animated movies leading the charge this time. “Let it Go” is fueling those “Frozen” sales and is actually getting airplay. “Happy” from “Despicable Me 2” is topping charts and becoming yet another Pharrell hit (it’s number one on the download chart). The impossibly ear-worming “Everything is AWESOME!” from The Lego Movie is becoming one of the biggest hits for twins Tegan and Sara (featuring the comedy singing group The Lonely Island). And all three of these songs are well-integrated into the plot/action.

One Direction’s “Midnight Memories” is predicted to be 17th on the album chart and Aviici is there with his mystery artists (hint: some reality singing show competitors are on that album!) at 49th.

This is the weekly sales thread. Please post numbers as you find them. Thanks!
