Idol Sales News – Week Ending 05/01/11

Jennifer Hudson continues on the top of the Idol album leader board. This week, her album is brought to you by the number 32. She was at 32nd on the BB chart last week and she remains at 32nd despite losing 32% in sales (general market drop after Easter). This brings her total in sales to 302K (how did that 0 slip in there?).

Mandisa continues to sell strong (which is kind of the name of her current single) while Crystal’s Idol performance helped her to get back in the top 200 (as she edges towards 200K in sales).

Also appearing on Idol is Bruno Mars justifying his platinum certification by selling a total of 972K (two weeks more and he should have sold 1M). Even though he performed on Idol, he actually had a decrease in sales (the performance probably muted the after Easter drop). Carole King saw triple percentage increases for her albums after her music was last week’s theme.

One strange number you will see is that Tapestry is listed as having sold only 1.878M albums which seems to contradict what Idol was crowing about last week. Tapestry has been awarded a diamond certification by the RIAA for 10M albums shipped. Before people think that certification was too soon, the 1.878M is just the albums that have sold in the SoundScan era which began March 1, 1991. Tapestry was on the US charts for almost 6 years and has sold 25M albums worldwide. It has sold well over 10M albums in the US alone.
