Idol Sales News – Week Ending 01/01/12

Now with Idol Album and Download Numbers! Kelly’s “Mr. Know it All” goes platinum

It’s the first chart of the new year and it’s always a little scary for albums while being exciting for singles. HDD estimates were released yesterday, it has Kelly taking the the top spot on the Idol leader board. Scotty managed to stay in the top 15 on the BB200 and top 2 of Country for 3 months, but it’s time for those singles to help sell things, because HDD has him clinging to top 25 and moving down to 3 on Country. Daughtry is not far behind. Where will the other Idols/Voice/AGT contestants find themselves?

Year end charts are starting to show up. These are different than Billboard charts which has their year starting in mid-November. We are talking calender years now and with last week ending in 2012, the Christmas charts are the last of the season.

To no one’s surprise, Adele topped the album sales chart for the year. She managed to sell more copies of a single album in a single year (5.82M) since Usher in 2004 (7.9M). According to Reuters, sales of albums were up 3% and the last time year to year album sales were up was also 2004. Digital sales are up 10%.

Adele also had the best selling single with 5.81M in sales for “Rolling in the Deep”. This is the first year that a song has sold more than 5M downloads in a single year. This year it happened twice. The other song was LFMAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” which sold 5.47M. In third place is Katy’s E.T. with 4.83M.

Here are the best selling singles in the last 5 years (according to SS):
2010: Katy Perry “California Gurls”: 4.398M
2009: Black Eyed Peas “Boom Boom Pow”: 4.762M
2008: Leona Lewis “Bleeding Love”: 3.369M
2007: Soulja Boy Tell’Em “Crank That”: 2.909M
2006: Daniel Powter “Bad Day”: 1,935,974

Daughtry came in 16th on the year-end Rock album chart with 298,634 in sales.
