Idol News Roundup 01/02/09: Adam Lambert, Blake Lewis, Matt Giraud, Kris Allen

First up on this fine 2nd day of 2010, are some brand new club re-mixes from Adam Lambert and Blake Lewis, via DJ Taj’s Sound of Music blog.

I know many of you have been waiting for the remixes of Adam’s single,   “For Your Entertainment”–DJ Taj has posted five, and you can find them right   HERE.

Dj Escape & Johnny Vicious (tribal & pop remixes), Bimbo Jones, Nick Fonzerelli, and Brad Walsh all lend their dance-floor interpretations of Adam’ heady tune.   FYE might not have been a hit on TV, but no doubt, it could become a huge club hit.

DJ Taj also reveals two new re-mixes of Blake Lewis‘ single, “Heartbreak on Vinyl” from Bimbo Jones and LA Riots. Check it out HERE. Blake has already hit the club charts with remixes of “How Many Words” and “Sad Song”–I’m looking forward to “Heartbreak” joining them.

For those of you waiting for high quality vids of Matt Giraud’s New Years Eve performances at the Oklahoma City Thunder basketball game, Matt has posted the good stuff on his facebook page. Watch “Let’s Get it On” HERE, and “Great Balls of Fire” HERE. Nice job, Matt!

Also, expect a single from Matt soon–he announced via twitter, “So it’s the first day of the new year. What to do in 2010… Oh yeah, I have a single coming out on iTunes in February!! I’m excited!”

If you happen to be tooling around the radio dial this weekend, you might catch Kris Allen co-hosting Rick Dees weekly countdown show. The theme is the Biggest Hits of the Last 4 Years, and if you don’t catch it on radio, you can listen at Dees website HERE.   If you’re looking for the super-condensed version (just Kris!), Thisistaks has an edited youtube version HERE.

  1. Thanks to Taks for the Rick Dees thing …… if you’re lurking, nice job on krinja duty.

So, I don’t get the remix thing, either. Would they release the song again?

  2. I just don’t get the remix thing. What exactly is the point?

For dance floor I guess. The song is sync to certain rhyme in a way that it will make people more impulsive to dance.

  3. I’m not big on remixes either but that Brad Walsh mix is crazy good!!

  4. Thanks to Taks for the Rick Dees thing ‘ ¦’ ¦ if you’re lurking, nice job on krinja duty.

Ditto thanks. Kris’s wit is quick. The answer to the caller’s Skymall question…lol!

I like the Brad Walsh version too and find the Dj Escape & Johnny Vicious pop remix alright as well. But I like the original the most.

I for sure don’t need remixes to get groovin’ to FYE. Like the orig the most!

  6. I like the Brad Walsh version the most. Haven’t been to club for a while. Maybe will go just to check out if they play FYE, and of course dance to it :D

  7. Kris is #8 this week on the VH1 Top 20 Countdown. No sign of Adam.

ETA: Looks like they took Adam off the voting ballot today. Not a big surprise. I’m sure WWFM will get added when they do a video for it.

  8. The Brad Walsh remix is fantastic! It should be released as a single!

  9. Hi. I’m wondering if artists get royalties from remixes and whether remixes ever get radio play or chart.

I don’t go to clubs but I do like that Brad Walsh remix. Neat.

  10. ETA: Looks like they took Adam off the voting ballot today. Not a big surprise. I’m sure WWFM will get added when they do a video for it

Something is up at the VH1 site and you can no longer view the FYE video on VH1. If it can’t be viewed, it can’t get views and it won’t be up for the vote. Apparently it has been down for awhile, so that is why it’s no longer in the top20 voting area

  11. I’m sure WWFM will get added when they do a video for it.

They’ve already filmed the video. People are guessing/hoping that it will be shown for the first time when Adam is interviewed on Fuse on Jan. 11.

I can still watch it in VH1. Here is the direct link:

ETA, it’s a good MV :) Too bad it’s pulled off from the voting chart.

I have no idea about the royalties for Adam but someone who knows Brad Walsh has said he was paid a flat rate for doing the remix.

  14. I have no idea about the royalties for Adam but someone who knows Brad Walsh has said he was paid a flat rate for doing the remix.

Thanks Saga. Who would pay him to make the remix?

  15. Thanks Saga. Who would pay him to make the remix?

    RCA? Or Adam I guess…

  16. I like the Brad Walsh remix too. I think it’s the best one and I do think it would make a good club song.

  17. You can watch any video on http://www.vevo.com. Including Adam’s.
    Good quality.

Talking about Vevo, they have that commercial ads featuring Adam and the live performance of WWFM at the launch party. I wonder when they are going to release them. They have released Gaga performance at the party.

  18. Oksana
Thanks for the link. I will watch it there :) It’s actually on the Vevo list of top artists in 2010. I was explaining why people can’t watch it or vote for it on VH1-where I used to watch it too.

I actually bought it on itunes and can watch it anytime I want..but that doesn’t help it in the countdowns

RCA/19 Records — hopefully they will release the Brad Walsh version and give us a ring tone or two!!!

I expect the dance mixes to be a critical part of the Europe Adam launch. I also expect that they will be played in clubs in North America, too. Now I want remixed of Pick U Up and If I Had You. [And a live album!!]

  20. Yay Matt! Single news!!! And great videos — Another fantastic performance of “Let’s Get It On”, and a rousing “Great Balls of Fire”. I love that the crowd was so engaged.

    http://www.vh1.com/video/play.jhtml?artist=3188063&vid=459668

I get an error loading message there. And if I search by Adam Lambert I get a different page page where the link to FYE open to a ‘No Longer Available’ page.

Just worked for me and FYE is on VH1’s playlist — just not on the Top 20 ballot.

  22. I can’t watch the link to VH1 either. Says “error” unable to load.Maybe I’m all wet but I think there’s something fishy going on at VH1. Can’t view FYE either or find Adam Lambert . Ok, so the song isn’t played on radio, so they won’t play the music video? Now wouldn’t that be a hoot for VH1….play a video for a song that’s not on the radio.
I know that people were voting. Myself and a friend spent hours one night. And of course you can’t get a link to a contact for VH1 anywhere. If you google VH1, you might find a name of a programming person, but you have to WRITE to them.

I’ve never been able to trust anything that involves voting. Unless it’s one vote per computer or cell phone or whatever, I think it’s fixed. No one will ever know.

  23. I can’t watch FYE on VH1’s website, and TfM doesn’t play for me either. I live outside US, maybe it has something to do with (no VEVO for us outside US either… grr…). But then again, I do remember watching these videos on this website before, so it can’t be the reason…

  24. Thanks for posting the shorter, edited version of the Rick Dees countdown with Kris Allen! The coffee table with a fish tank comment, lololololol!!!! :D

Kris’s speaking voice sounds good on radio!!

  25. Kris’ voice is like melting butter – smooth…. Gaaah this guy just cracks me up!!!! Coffeetable + Fish tank, who wouldn’t want that!!!!

Also, maybe that girl should have asked him “What’s the craziest thing you’ve done voluntrly…?” …. At first I cracked up at his response, then felt guilty… coz he almost died coz of that illness, it took him a year to recover.

Also, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” I love him even more for loving this song!!!… It gets majorly overlooked!!! … I’d love to hear his take on it!!! Kris wud make it so beautiful, infusing it with his brand of soul, his gentle riffing, and his emotional connection… GAAAAH! I want to hear it!!! NOW!!!
    Also LET IT BE!!! DW!!!

Loved his cover of “Yesterday” and “Come Together”

  26. Agree with you Seeker.
Kris has a very good radio voice and he just cracks me up!
I want a fish tank coffee table ;)

  27. Kris is awesome as a dj. I hope he gets more opportunities like that in the future. Loved the Q & A segments from the broadcast. Very interesting choice of favorite Beatles songs.

Matt’s performances were just awesome! I wish him the best of luck with his new single.

    Thanks mj :)

  28. Maybe too much New Year’s champagne affected my hearing, but these FYE remixes sound too overcrowded and monotonous to me. I think the Escape & Johnny Vicious Pop version is best, but maybe that’s because it sounds closest to the original.

IMHO, the best approach to remixing is usually the KISS method. It’s amazing how many people seem to think remixing should put in more than was there to start with rather than removing something or even just modifying existing ingredients (the latter is what true remixing should be).

  29. 19/RCA may have asked VH1 to take FYE down since they will soon release the WWFM music video and want VH1 to focus on that one.

And maybe people forgot about voting for it since it was the holidays, so it didn’t receive enough votes to make the Top 20. It debuted at #16 on the countdown a couple of weeks ago — low enough that it could easily fall out of the Top 20 if people didn’t feel like they needed to vote or simply forgot about doing so.

  30. While My Guitar Gently Weeps is one of my all-time favorite Beatles songs — and probably my favorite song ever written by George Harrison.

Kris is really good at this d.j. stuff — hopefully he will do some more of this in the future. KBIG here in L.A. gets musicians to host shows — David Cook did this recently and Rob Thomas was just on this past week as the guest d.j. Maybe Kris will be invited to do this as well sometime in 2010.

P.S. – LLWD is #23 on iTunes now! Is that the highest it’s been? I know it got to #23 before but I can’t remember if it got to #22…

and his album is now at #87 (while the deluxe version is back on the chart at #972)

  31. hmmm I was wondering about that too, birchtree

Now I want remixed of Pick U Up and If I Had You. [And a live album!!]

I would *love* a remixes iihy

  32. And maybe people forgot about voting for it since it was the holidays, so it didn’t receive enough votes to make the Top 20. Still I’m surprised that it received so few votes that they completely dropped it from the ballot. The play counts still look pretty high compared to some of the others on the list that have been there longer. Are vids ever re-added? Or once they drop off is that the end for them?

  33. Sorry. Edits not working for me. Is 19/RCA asking VH1 to drop the vid a real possibility? Sounds wack to me. But what do I know.

  34. on the headlines thread, Kirsten said something about an artist only allowed to have one video at a time eligible for the VH1 countdown. Don’t know if that’s right, but if it is, then it makes sense that they would pull FYE so the WWFM video would be immediately eligible when it is released

Thanks girly! Haven’t been to headlines today. I’m remiss in my mj’ing!

  36. It’s always been somewhat of a mystery as to how videos make the list/countdown. Once on the voting list it takes more than just votes to make the countdown. It’s my understanding that it’s a combination of votes, radio play (chart standing), sales, on-line streaming and possibly label support.

  37. Ugh. I hate all these secret squirrel processes for all this stuff. The more I know about what it takes to get airplay etc. the more discouraged about the whole thing I get. Seems like finding pop success is like hitting the lottery. Except even if you hit all the numbers you can only get the prize money if you’re on the lottery squad’s secret list.

  38. If you want to download an mp3 of Kris’s NYE performance of CSA, go to mp3ify dot com and just search with Kris’s name and NYE.

    Also, here’s a Heartless/Gangsta mashup mp3 with good sound:

girlygirl, thanks for the album/single info. It was at #24 just an hour or so ago. I don’t know what the highest peak was.

I finally listened to Kris on Rick Dees, and he has a great radio voice! Who knew?

  39. For me, Kris is not someone who has a natural sense of humor. I’ve gotten to the point where I no longer even follow him on Twitter. His tweets just became so annoying (immature). Last count, it still looks like he has the weakest selling album of all the 8 AI winners. He is definitely not the top seller of Season 8.

Tell us how you really feel. Do you love him? I think you love him.

  41. So Matt has a single coming out. So that means he’s signed? I hope so. He needs to get that single out asap so he can perform it on the new season of AI.

How is Allison’s album doing? It seems like Kris got a bump for the NYE performance. Did Allison? I don’t recall where she was before NYE.

Also, was at Walmart and they have a whole Idol section, and there were plenty of Kris, Adam, Daughtry and Carrie. I didn’t see Cook or Jordin, however. I guess they are only posting the recent releases…oh, but doesn’t Jordin have a new album out? No Blake either, and I did look for him. They also had some AI 8 season compliation. I didn’t go and check all the other aisles, however, for Cook, etc., as I was on a mission to get Dayquil and orange juice so I can function for work on Monday despite this flu.

  42. I would love to see/hear Kris as a guest DJ – doing it LA on KBIG would be great exposure, since LLWD isn’t being played on KIIS as of yet. I think he’d be great co-hosting with a DJ that could play off his snarky sense of humor.

LLWD just keeps chugging along, though – now up to #22 on iTunes. Kris is making it hard for the holdout Top 40 stations like KIIS in LA to ignore LLWD’s success. I’m looking forward to seeing track sales figures on Wednesday, should be another strong week.

  43. Kris is making it hard for the holdout Top 40 stations like KIIS in LA to ignore LLWD’s success. I’m looking forward to seeing track sales figures on Wednesday, should be another strong week

    .

I’m pretty new to all of this, and curious…why do some stations hold out? Isn’t it in their best interest to play popular songs? I’m near Ottawa in Canada, and as far as I can tell by checking play lists, no one here is playing Kris at all. Even though his songs are charting lower on Billboard, Adam is being played on two stations for sure. It’s kind of funny…one station is playing FYE and one is playing WWFM. Do you think there is any hope for Kris in Canada? lol

  44. “LLWD just keeps chugging along, though ‘“ now up to #22 on iTunes. Kris is making it hard for the holdout Top 40 stations like KIIS in LA to ignore LLWD’s success. I’m looking forward to seeing track sales figures on Wednesday, should be another strong week.”

This is what I don’t get – why would they not be playing LLWD on KIIS as it has been a top 40 hit for a few weeks now & it is still selling well!! I’m with you Eileen , they are going to look silly if they don’t play it soon!![ Unless of course its a deliberate decision not to play it for some reason?!!]

Loved Kris playing DJ!! Great radio voice . WMGGW is my favourite George Harrison song – would love Kris to sing it sometime!!
I gather part 2 hasn’t been put up yet?

  45. undercooked, I don’t think Matt is signed. Based on the IdolNews interview from last week (http://bit.ly/7rD1ZC), the single is likely “You Don’t Know Me”, a duet jazz cover with Anna Wilson for her CD.

After Matt and Scott were cut from the finale, Matt was supposedly guaranteed a performance spot in the next season’s AI. He has plenty of great new music he could perform, at least.

  46. LLWD really isn’t a good fit format wise for KIIS-FM. Neither is WWFM, for that matter. But if LLWD cracks the Top 20 on the pop radio chart, KIIS will probably play it a little bit. They have spun it a few times already, but very sporadically.

That’s good news. I am hoping we will get to see him perform. I wonder if any of the Season 8 contestants will mentor like MJ and Carly did last year during the Hollywood rounds.

  48. KNA

Sorry, but Kris actually IS the best seller of all the AI8 Idols — at least since the show actually ended (no one knows the sales totals for downloads prior to the season finale, so I am just using numbers since then)

Compare Kris’ combined album sales (220K) and his sales of NoBo (300K+), Heartless (200+K) and LLWD (currently 399K) to Adam’s combined album sales (400+K) his sales of TFM, FYE, NoBo and WWFM (approx. total of 400-500K) and you would get approx. 1.1 million for Kris compared to approx 800-900K for Adam

    (

  49. I don’t think either Matt or Anoop has been signed. I believe they are simply releasing singles (and Anoop’s case, an album) on independent labels

  50. I’m near Ottawa in Canada, and as far as I can tell by checking play lists, no one here is playing Kris at all.

Can you pick up CIHT? It played LLWD 16 times last week, according to Mediabase.

  51. Sorry, but Kris actually IS the best seller of all the AI8 Idols ‘” at least since the show actually ended (no one knows the sales totals for downloads prior to the season finale, so I am just using numbers since then)

Yeah, but since you don’t have the pre-season download numbers, you don’t have MV download numbers, and you don’t include the Season 8 “albums” it’s hard to really know who is the overall best seller. Also, do we even want to throw in “Take One?”

There is no way to compare, but if you want to level the playing field, you can’t really include anything that was performed on Season 8 and just start the clock with their debut albums and the singles off of those albums. I think they are both doing fairly well in this sales climate.

  52. You can’t really total album sales and singles, they are two separate things.
We’ll never know pre-finale sales, too bad. I know Adam’s AI album was still charting around #60 when it was taken down from itunes after the tour. Not that it matters though, but I often wondered how much money the Idols made from the songs during the season.

I could be wrong on this, but I think I heard the idols actually made more money off the downloads during the season then they do now? Perhaps there were a lot less people do pay (producers, etc) so they got a bit more?

  54. I could be wrong on this, but I think I heard the idols actually made more money off the downloads during the season then they do now? Perhaps there were a lot less people do pay (producers, etc) so they get a bit more?

That would make sense, those studio songs are recorded quickly and probably are cheap to produce. Coupled with the tour money, the kids do pretty well for themselves! I hope they all don’t spend it all in one place.

  55. Also, ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ I love him even more for loving this song!!!’ ¦ It gets majorly overlooked!!! ‘ ¦ I’d love to hear his take on it!!! Oh Kris, please sing that one on your acoustic guitar. It will be so awesome. I can just hear it now.

And yes, Kris ‘ voice is so good for radio.

  56. The following would be the ONLY way to make it a level playing field, since Adam has 3 singles out as compared to Kris just having one single currently out:

If you took Adam’s album sales + his sales of his current best selling single off that album(which would be the single of FYE) you would get approx 600 K

If you add Kris’ album sales + the sales of LLWD, you would get a little over 600K

So basically sales based on one album + top single are basically even

ITA — and almost just wrote the same thing!

Or….just for kicks, you could convert it into dollars and measure that way. Also, still no numbers for MVs and they both have those released as well.

But either way, I think they are doing fairly well when measured with other artists (besides SuBo of course.)

  60. Actually, it doesn’t matter at this point who the bestseller is from S8. (At least to me, lol.) We still have a long ways to go. I know album sales drop in Jan., but I’m not counting anyone out at this point. Perhaps I should change my name to eternal optimist? Hee!

Seriously though, so much is based on what takes off outside of the AI bubble, and I don’t mean simply what’s taken off in the media.

  61. And yes, Kris ‘ voice is so good for radio.

    Both speaking and singing. :D

  62. Yup — really any way you look at it, both Adam and Kris are doing fine. Not remarkably great, but fine.

I feel your pain…honestly. It’s the most frustrating thing. Someday other people will see what we see. Kris’s journey has just begun.

  66. I just get tired of people saying Kris is this big failure, when he isn’t.

Kris’s sales are continually moving up on ITUNES so I say he is the opposite of a failure. He just didn’t have a large Idol fan base.

ETA- which is odd since he won idol. But Jordon was in the same boat.

  67. Sorry, but Kris actually IS the best seller of all the AI8 Idols ‘” at least since the show actually ended (no one knows the sales totals for downloads prior to the season finale, so I am just using numbers since then)

This is not sensible — the commercial success of artists are measured by total revenue, by sales within a music format [singles, albums, videos, ring tones] and by concert receipts. But not total units.

In the music industry, when comparisons need to be made between tracks and albums, album equivalants are used: 10 tracks sold = 1 album equiv.

  68. girlygirly,
For me I think Kris is making money than all of them because he had more co-writes on his album and it doesn’t look like he’s even spending it, LOL! I can’t remember what day Kirsten gave us a rough idea about how much he might be getting even with his low sales. I think it was the week after his album dropped.

  69. Kris is making it hard for the holdout Top 40 stations like KIIS in LA to ignore LLWD’s success. I’m looking forward to seeing track sales figures on Wednesday, should be another strong week
I’m pretty new to all of this, and curious’ ¦why do some stations hold out? Isn’t it in their best interest to play popular songs?

Maybe it is not politically correct for AI people (Ryan Seac. & the judges) to like Kris Allen.
Sorry, I’m still bitter for Ryan and Simon’s treatment toward Kris.

Edit: Somehow can’t change the quotations above. I don’t know why.

  70. Q3

well we can’t do that with the Idols since we don’t know the sales totals for all of the songs off of Kris and Adam’s albums. Nor do we know how many sales of the various songs they did during the Idol show.

But as I say, both Adam and Kris are doing fine.

  71. Ratna12,
Anytime you remember that incident, just play LET IT RAIN and you’ll be fine!

  72. I bet Mad World and Heartless both sold a shit load. :) They are both doing fine!

  73. I don’t care for remixes, but I’d love to see some Latin-flavored covers/remixes. For some reason, I pictured one of “If I Had You”.

If you add Kris’ album sales + the sales of LLWD, you would get a little over 600K

So basically sales based on one album + top single are basically even

I don’t agree. This calculation doesn’t take into consideration that revenue from an album is ten times the revenue from a single, and revenue is a major part of the equation of an artist’s success.

So, if one album is the equivalent of ten singles, then: Adam = 4,000,000 album tracks; Kris = 2,200,000 album tracks. To be even, Kris would have to sell 1,800,000 more singles than Adam. That hasn’t happened yet.

  75. Can anyone shed light on the purpose of “remixes”? If it’s mentioned up thread, let me know. Thanks.

  76. I just get tired of people saying Kris is this big failure, when he isn’t.

Saying Kris is a failure is an opinion. Saying Kris has the lowest album sales of any idol winner is a fact.

which is odd since he won idol. But Jordon was in the same boat.

Jordin was way ahead of Kris, in both single and album sales at this same time after her win.

  77. karend

    Don’t blink.

  78. LLWD is showing amazing strength on iTunes and is in excellent position on HAC to go Top 5. And it may move up Top 40 as well. We won’t know for a while.

Maybe Kris will surprise everyone and have the biggest hit single of S8.

  79. I do see Kris at risk of being dropped from his contract at some point. 19E was never behind his winning. They did not even want him in the finals. He was guaranteed a recording contract – because he won. His sales are pretty weak for the winner of American Idol. His numbers are more like that of someone who finished 4th or 5th. After the finale, Simon had predicted that Kris would likely be one of the least successful winners – right next to Taylor Hicks.

  80. Jordin was way ahead of Kris, in both single and album sales at this same time after her win.

I suspect Jordin’s fan base coming off Idol was bigger than Kris’s. To be honest, I don’t recall her coronation song. Did it do well?

I think Season 8 was a complicated season, what with the “save” and both Adam and Danny being so polarizing. I think Kris managed to squeek to first place by staying out of the Danny and Adam fan cross fire.

I am really interested to see how the Season 9 winner and runner up do as far as sales. If they have sales like Kris and Adam them we know the fan base isn’t what it used to be.

  81. Maybe Kris will surprise everyone and have the biggest hit single of S8.
So far it looks like that could happen.

He actually should, he won the season. The winners usually sell the most. It’s expected.

Unless you have a Daughtry-season 5 kind of year???

  82. I hear LLWD on a HAC here but the Top 40 station isn’t playing it. HAC isn’t playing WWFM but Top 40 is. I wonder if HAC will add WWFM at all.

  83. Jive is having a terrible year selling albums. Kris is probably one of their top sellers at this point. And the single is starting to really make some moves. Looks like gold is coming very quickly and another couple of good weeks means platinum is a possibility.

Jive has never dropped an Idol contestant yet. I agree about S9 sales though. Two underwhelming years in a row could hurt the franchise.

  84. Jive has never dropped an Idol contestant yet. I agree about S9 sales though. Two underwhelming years in a row could hurt the franchise.

I think Kris has a lot going for him. He is very talented and he is very good looking. I think he should go more in the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers direction and name his band. But I don’t think he is allowed to do that until his first year is up? I wish Cook and picked a better name for his band.

  85. Saying Kris is a failure is an opinion. Saying Kris has the lowest album sales of any idol winner is a fact.

I agree with the former. But the latter is not a fact. Kris’ album sales is still moving’ we still don’t know how much it will eventually sell. Perhaps you should say: Kris has the lowest album sales for any Idol winner… so far.

He actually should, he won the season. The winners usually sell the most. It’s expected.

Unless you have a Daughtry-season 5 kind of year???

I think this is the aim for ALL former idol contestants not just Kris. It’s kind of lame to lower expectations for the rest of the idol alumni simply because the Idol winner is releasing an album, don’t you think?

  86. So, if one album is the equivalent of ten singles, then: Adam = 4,000,000 album tracks; Kris = 2,200,000 album tracks. To be even, Kris would have to sell 1,800,000 more singles than Adam. That hasn’t happened yet.

If it’s about revenue, you should also factor in the fact that Kris wrote or co-wrote nine songs on his album to Adam’s four. Plus the fact that he has done only one music video as opposed to Adam’s three.

  87. Sony and the 2012 budget would have paid for the Time for Miracles video. But even discounting that music video, RCA has probably spent more on Adam than Jive has on Kris. The co-writes would effect Kris and Adam’s pocket, but not the record label as far as net revenue though or am I mistaken?

  88. If it’s about revenue, you should also factor in the fact that Kris wrote or co-wrote nine songs on his album to Adam’s four. Plus the fact that he has done only one music video as opposed to Adam’s three.

I think the discussion is what the record label makes, not Adam or Kris. Also, as stated before, TFM was paid for by the 2012 folks and not by RCA. I’m sure if Adam and/or the record label had to pay for the 2012 MV they wouldn’t have made it.

Right now, the Scripts are cleaning up on the success of Kris’s single and Pink should make a pretty penny off of WWFM as it sells more. I do believe the non-Idol penned singles always get released first. I wish it wasn’t so, but based on David Cook’s album and the singles that were released, it seems like that is the way it is.

  89. Maybe Kris will surprise everyone and have the biggest hit single of S8

He could, however, we won’t know who will have the biggest hit of S8 until all their careers are over, and hopefully, that won’t happen for a long, long time.

  90. If it’s about revenue, you should also factor in the fact that Kris wrote or co-wrote nine songs on his album to Adam’s four. Plus the fact that he has done only one music video as opposed to Adam’s three.

Depend’s on whose revenue you are talking about … doesn’t affect the recording company revenue at all, and those are the people who decide whether an artist is enough of a success to renew their contract. I’ll agree that it is a nice addition to the change in Kris’ pocket, but I wonder if it is enough to make up for the 1,800,000 shortage in single sales, or the income Adam is getting from photo shoots and magazine covers, or the revenue RCA is getting from the use of For Your Entertainment in television commercials?

  91. I think I should have said Kris could have the FIRST hit single of S8. Gold is a good start. In the past I would have said the first single to go platinum but S8 sales are still too meh to safely predict anyone from the season having a platinum single.

People don’t get paid for magazine covers or photo shoots (unless they’re girlfriends of Tiger Woods). And often time a label will PAY for a song to be used on a TV show/event. Not the opposite.

  92. “19E was nnever behind his winning”

Where was this written and where do people derive that impression from? I laugh when I hear people say that. At this point, none of us know how 19E felt and is feeling about any of these guys now and to say they didn’t want Kris to win, is funny. I always say this and I’ll say it Gain, don’t look at Simon Cowell and draw your conclusion because you never know what game he’s playing.

ETA : If kris co-wrote 8 of his songs and wrote 1 solo, wouldn’t it cut down cost for the label and at the same time put a lot more in his own pocket? I think he’s okay and he seems very relaxed and happy. Who knows what kind of agreement he made with the label and management? At least he hasn’t stopped talking about his second album. He seems confident about what he’s doing and at this point, I don’t see any risk.

  93. I think the discussion is what the record label makes, not Adam or Kris.

How much does a music video cost? And how much do they pay all the contributing artists to an album per song? I’d think that would also factor into the total revenue of an artist for their respective labels NOT just the album sales. That was just my point.

Depend’s on whose revenue you are talking about ‘ ¦ doesn’t affect the recording company revenue at all, and those are the people who decide whether an artist is enough of a success to renew their contract.

So, who pays for the MV’s and the collaborating/contributing artists? The artists themselves or the record label. If it’s the former, then I agree with you. But, if it’s the latter, I disagree. Total revenue is the balance of expenses and sales right?

  94. LOL…

I enjoy Kris’s music and hope he is able to make a living out of it as long as he wants. However, since I will not be getting a percentage of his profits, I really could care less how much he sells. Also, since I haven’t seen any proof that Kris’s label is about ready to drop him, I am not worried about that either.

BTW: Back to the topic, Kris sounds great on the countdown! & THANK YOU Taks for creating the you tube videos with just his parts! Like always, you are awesome.

  95. I think I should have said Kris could have the FIRST hit single of S8. Gold is a good start.

Yup! And Adam could have the first gold album from S8. lol Are we getting into another “what is better between a hit album and hit single” argument?

  96. So it starts again, the second day of the new year? Honestly, none of AI8 alum’s sales are good enough for his/her fans to win a debate like this.

  97. Sorry, but Kris actually IS the best seller of all the AI8 Idols

Then how come pretty much every music industry news site says Adam is out-selling Kris? You can’t just look at singles. You have to look at everything.

Besides, it doesn’t really matter. Both are making music and both have people that are buying it. Why can’t that be enough in the Idol bubble???? Seriously.

  98. Since we are talking money, how much do we think Adam got paid for the Gridlock gig? Also, I am assuming 19 would get a percentage of that. Ditto with the private Halloween gig he did.

Also, did Daughtrey, Kris and Allison also get paid for appearing on their NYE events?

  99. Is there anything like a hit album? LOL! hahaha I don’t think we see albums on top40 and HAC charts.

  100. Adam looks well on his way to the first gold album of S8. :) Although I think Kris will get his gold single first.

I always find it funny when the Idol fans debate about who’s making the most $. We’re not getting any of it so as long as they’re not begging in front of Cosco, I could care less how much $ any of them makes.

  101. So now the discussion is who’s got the bigger wallet? lol
What’s next, who’s got the faster car?
alright quick poll. Whats the average age in this thread, 40 somehting?

ANyway Bimbo Jones is the better remix – its got that Club 69 anthem mix feel to it.

  102. Then how come pretty much every music industry news site says Adam is out-selling Kris? You can’t just look at singles. You have to look at everything.

Because it makes good headlines? Some switched those types of headlines last year. However, I do agree that album sales make more than single sales. This doesn’t mean Kris has failed by a long shot.

They’re both doing fine and we do still have a ways to go…

I don’t know/care what they’re making or how much it costs for what they’re producing. I just know that I want Kris to continue in the business he’s meant to be in and I’m sure Adam fans feel the same. As I said, they both seem to be doing fine. I believe they will continue to do so.

  103. What’s next, who’s got the faster car?

I think we had that discussion when Adam and Kris both got their free cars from Ford. Adam got the convertible and Kris got the “green friendly” car. :)

ANyway Bimbo Jones is the better remix ‘“ its got that Club 69 anthem mix feel to it.

yeah. I like that one too

  104. They’re both doing fine and we do still have a ways to go’ ¦

    Yup! I agree!!

  105. alright quick poll. Whats the average age in this thread, 40 somehting?

Do you mean in actual year units? Or can come up with some other formula? :) You know, young at heart, emotional age, etc.

  106. I’ll try this one more time… what are remixes for??? Why are they made and who makes money from them???

  107. “Also, did Daughtrey, Kris and Allison also get paid for appearing on their NYE events?”

I think so, but the publicity might have been enough all by itself to attract them to the gigs, especially Daughtry.

By the way, personal peeve (and not directed at anyone in particular), why does Daughtry get misspelled so often? I have seen ‘Daughtrey’ many, many times. He is one of the ‘big 3’ Idols and I’m sure fans know how to spell his name, yet I see that misspelling all the time (it’s like the sound of fingernails on chalk to me :)

Is he the most-misspelled Idol of all time? The ‘e’ key isn’t anywhere near the ‘y’ key so it can’t always be just a finger slipping, can it?

I never see anyone referring to David Cooke or Carry Underwould lol, but I have to admit I’ve seen Kelly Pickler and Kellie Clarkson (and Clarkston).

Ok, I’m in a weird mood. And maybe it’s only when Daughtry is misspelled that it leaps off the page to me, maybe the other Idols get misspelled more than I notice. David Archuleta would be another one that would be easy to misspell, at least the last name, but I don’t often see it.

Yeah, I’m in a weird mood… Nothing better to do, and I refuse to get drawn into the latest ‘Adam is a better seller than Kris or vice versa’ discussion :)

  108. By the way, personal peeve (and not directed at anyone in particular), why does Daughtry get misspelled so often? I have seen ‘Daughtrey’ many, many times.

How about thinking of that extra “e” as standing for excellent! :)

  109. LLWD is on track to sell ~70k this week. With the huge boost it got today, that number might be up to 80k+ if it continues tomorrow. Without question, it will be gold in two weeks. Seeing as how consistent it has been with sales over the last ~2 months, I would be surprised if it did not go platinum eventually.

  110. undercooked, I’m with you on DC’s band name. And he always had a thing with words (can you say word nerd?), so that really surprised me.

  111. If you took Adam’s album sales + his sales of his current best selling single off that album(which would be the single of FYE) you would get approx 600 K

Gawd, I hate this Kris/Adam crap but why would you not include both his singles since he has 2 out, that are off the same album by the same label? Those count as sales and $$$$.

  112. “How about thinking of that extra ‘e’ as standing for excellent! ”

Well said! :) I just need to look on the bright side…

  113. undercooked, I’m with you on DC’s band name. And he always had a thing with words (can you say word nerd?), so that really surprised me.

Is it too late for him to rename it? I mean “Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band” sound great just as “Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.”

David Cook and the Anthemic. I guess it kind of works, but to me, the name lacks color. It just sounds so academic

anthemic – pertaining to music that has the qualities of an anthem, such as a serious tone and strong tune; also, regarded as an anthem

  114. Gawd, I hate this Kris/Adam crap but why would you not include both his singles since he has 2 out, that are off the same album by the same label? Those count as sales and $$$$.

Even if somebody is measuring sales of songs/albums by Kris and Adam, it’s far too early to be doing it. Bring it up again in about a year. ;)

  115. Maybe Kris will surprise everyone and have the biggest hit single of S8.
So far it looks like that could happen.

He actually should, he won the season. The winners usually sell the most. It’s expected.

“Expected” or not, it doesn’t make it any less of an achievement. No need to invalidate it like that.

  116. Also keep in mind that….

-Kris Album was released 1 week before Adams.

-Kris single LLWD was released 5 weeks before Adams FYE and 8 weeks before Adams WWFM.

So Adam has not had near the same amount of time to generate sales.

Even if somebody is measuring sales of songs/albums by Kris and Adam, it’s far too early to be doing it. Bring it up again in about a year.

Totally agree with this….lets look where things end up at the end of 2010…neither of these guys have had enough time to prove themselves yet.

  117. David Cook and the Anthemic. I guess it kind of works, but to me, the name lacks color. It just sounds so academic

I never see that written or hear it without thinking David Cook and the Anemic. ;)

  118. David Cook and the Anthemic. I guess it kind of works, but to me, the name lacks color. It just sounds so academic

anthemic ‘“ pertaining to music that has the qualities of an anthem, such as a serious tone and strong tune; also, regarded as an anthem

Yeah, I get the word association and all, but you’re right. It has no punch! And it doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue. The Anthemic … Bon Jovi … The Anthemic … Bon Jovi …. hmmm…….

I’ll try this one more time’ ¦ what are remixes for??? Why are they made and who makes money from them???

Its a DJ thing and the club scene circle. But some remixes get requested enough and actually move some rmx units, which equals more exposure for the orignal artist and DJ. I can think of Usher’s Nice & Slow RMX did good I bought it. Cher’s Believe (Club 69 RMX) was pretty nice too. During the Trance period in the early 2000s a lot of old school material were being remixed and sold decent. Its just fun sampling and adding drum and bass.

  120. Remixes are common in dance music. I’m sure they had remixes in mind when some of Adam’s songs were recorded. Two reasons I can think of for remixes are to give new life to a song on radio after the song has run its course (like the remix of Lady Gaga’s Poker Face), and as people have said, for dance clubs. If you’re ever been to a dance club and heard remixes of songs that you usually hear on the radio, they’re really amazing sometimes. It’s an art in itself.

  121. Speaking of Daughtr(e)y, his single is got a very nice boost from his NYE appearance, just like LLWD did. LLWD started at #31 before the airing, and is now at #22 – Life After You is at #54, and I think it was in the 70-ish range before NYE. I’ve noticed his album sales have bumped on iTunes as well, so nice job Daughtry!

LAY was also on the VH-1 countdown show today at #5, so that I’m sure helped tremendously in addition to the NYE performance.

  122. Question. Is remix the same as reworking a song for say…, AI? Using the same words and basic melody, but putting your own spin on the song? Just wondering.

  123. Thank you all for the answers on remixing. I’ve heard them on Z100 and then MJ posted this info, so I was really wondering what it was all about. thx.

  124. I never see that written or hear it without thinking David Cook and the Anemic.

Me too! That could work if the bandmates are willing to wear makeup to make them look pale and you know, anemic.

  125. A good/familiar examplw of a remixed song is madonna’s like a prayer. When you hear the song at a club it is never the album version -its always the remixed version. And the remixed version became so popular that it was played on the radio almost as much as the original version

  126. One of the Poker Face remixes:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbGoZlIPnWU

You can find more on YouTube.

Question. Is remix the same as reworking a song for say’ ¦, AI? Using the same words and basic melody, but putting your own spin on the song? Just wondering.

Not really, it’s more techno. Taking the original recording and adding beats and stuff — idk, just different.

Oh, I forgot, earlier…I think songs are also remixed to fit various radio formats, sometimes.

  127. One of the Poker Face remixes:

I went over to ITUNES and checked out the dance chart, hoping to see Blake Lewis on there, but alas, he wasn’t. But anyhew, Lady GaGa has a few remixes doing well on the chart. Britney also has a remix of Circus. So I do think the remixes help expose songs to perhaps a different audience.

ETA-I only go to the top 200. Not sure how to get the songs ranked above 200.

  128. darn it..fact though is Adam is on his 3rd single compared to 1.

Not to bring up a sensitive subject, but is NoBo a bonus track at all on any Kris’s album? If it is, wouldn’t that mean Kris has two singles from the album? Or did he drop it. I wouldn’t blame him if he did.

    Ratna12,
Anytime you remember that incident, just play LET IT RAIN and you’ll be fine!

Thanks. And the great thing is, that song is one out of 3 most absolute favorites from Kris album.
LOL, I have to categorize the songs like that since I have so many favorites.

  130. darn it..fact though is Adam is on his 3rd single compared to 1.

Adam actually has 2 singles out. T4M was never officially released as a single, and was separate from his album, even though it was included as a bonus track on his album. Just because people made purchases of the T4M song, does not make it a single.

Also on a side note World Wide Albums, has sales totals at…

    Adam 462K (417K US / 45K Outside US)
    Kris 226K (220K US / 6K Outside US)

Once you click on the link look to the column on the left and click on 2009 Total to Date, to see this data. :)
It has SuBo worldwide sales at 6million+..YIKES..everyone in the industry sales suck compared to her!

  131. Is it too late for him to rename it? I mean ‘Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’ sound great just as ‘Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.’

I don’t think it’s too late yet, it’s still not written in stone. David has even been kind of hesitant about it, and I like to think that if a better name occurs to them, or arises organically, they’ll change it. But as it gets closer to the next cd, I wonder if they’ll use the name on that album.

  132. nope..nobo isn’t on his album

Nope, but it was still released as a single.

Regarding remixes. They are HUGE at clubs. FYE could become a club hit. There are some good beats there to dance to.

  133. Well I thought that Time song was one…they sure promoted the crap out of it. Produced a video for it. Is it on his CD

  134. Also on a side note World Wide Albums, has sales totals at’ ¦

The first thing I noticed on this site is the disclaimer that these numbers are estimations and not official. Secondly, who produces these numbers, and how reliable are they? I’ve no doubt that Adam is outselling Kris globally, but question the actual amount. I was under the impression that global reporting was too hit and miss to really be considered at all accurate.

  135. Yes, TFM is on Adam’s album

The funny thing about No Boundaries is that both Kris and Adam’s version were on the iTunes chart the last time I looked, which means people are still buying it. Not many people, granted, but a few people. It would be interesting to see aht the sales totals are for the two versions.

  136. ” People don’t get paid for magazine covers or photo shoots (unless they’re girlfriends of Tiger Woods) ”

Really? They get paid?!! Wow! :)

As for Adam and Kris they’re doing just fine. In terms of music and finance, I’m sure they are doing better now than before AI. Happy for them…

  137. Kris’s sales are continually moving up on ITUNES so I say he is the opposite of a failure. He just didn’t have a large Idol fan base.

ETA- which is odd since he won idol. But Jordon was in the same boat.

Guess I’ve never understood the conclusion that Kris does not have a large Idol fan base, or rather, that Kris doesn’t and Adam does.

Why do good single sales but only fair album sales for Kris = small Idol fan base, while good album sales but only fair single(s) sales for Adam = large Idol fan base?

If Adam’s fan base is huge and devoted, why haven’t they been able to make a hit out of TFM or FYE, and why is WWFM not a massive hit? Didn’t Archie’s large fan base make Crush a hit?

I have always felt that Kris and Adam probably have fanbases that are about equal but that Adam’s better album sales (so far) are more due to the huge amount of extra publicity he has recieved post-Idol, and are actually not fan-based. Without the press attention, I have a feeling Adam’s album sales would be about the same as Kris’s.

  138. No Boundaries is not on any version of Kris’ album

Actually, NoBo is included on the Deluxe KA album, which is the previous iTunes pass converted over to “Deluxe”. But Nobo was replaced by Heartless as the regular bonus track on the standard album, with a separate iTunes exclusive pre-order bonus track “From the Ashes” and Walmart exclusive track “Send Me All Your Angels”. The only place to get a KA album that includes NoBo is to order the iTunes Deluxe. You can’t walk into a store and find it on a hard CD.

  139. Amazed at how well Kris did as a DJ on the Dees show. He’s either really good at reading scripts or better off-the-cuff than I thought. Great job for a newbie.

  140. The site is back and I see pages. Woo hoo. But I think I see the time in England or something??

  141. Regarding remixes. They are HUGE at clubs. FYE could become a club hit. There are some good beats there to dance to

    .

On one of the station here (Chicago), they did a remix for KOL “Use Somebody” and Kelly’s “Already Gone”. Just seems wrong. I think some songs are not meant to be club songs. Those two songs in particular sounded soooo strange with techo beats!!!

  142. I think talk of either Kris or Adam (or Allison, for that matter) being dropped is not really on point currently. In my opinion, the main reason people have been dropped quickly — a la Taylor and Bo, mostly — is that the companies just didn’t think they were marketable to a very substantial audience in the current music climate, not because of sales numbers.

To me, Kris and Adam both have the potential to score well with quite substantial niche markets today, or, possibly for either or both of them, even with a fairly chunky mainstream market. Whether either will really do that or not is totally up in the air, of course, but both do music that seems to have a solid *chance* to attract a significant, growing, and current music audience, seems to me. (Allison, too, actually, and, if Danny is accepted by country audiences, Danny, too)

Honestly, the most dicey-to-market-longer-term of the top season 7 and 8 finishers seems to me to be Archie. I don’t see his wonderful strengths as really counting for much in the pop market, so it would seem to me he’ll almost have to carve out some niche all to himself to make it, and I’m not entirely sure what that niche would be. I could easily seem him going some Josh Groban-y-type route and doing brilliantly, actually, but I wonder whether he and the label would go for something like that. … Maybe the Christmas album is evidence that they would?

To me, Cook is the surest bet of the whole S7 and S8 to get a solid, mainstream, current audience. But I still see Kris, Adam, Danny, Allison, and possibly Archie (and even Castro) having a good potential shot at that. So none of them seems to be in real danger of droppage at this point, to me, anyway. Hope that’s true and not just my wishful thinking.

  143. Did you see Danny’s new tattoo? It’s huge.

yep! seen it and did not like it, but who cares what i think? its his arm, his choice!

  144. Danny got a tattoo? What does it look like? My son got a kokopeli tat on his forearm, so I’m just curious!

  145. Thanks, Diane, for the tattoo picture. It’s um…big! Ok, it’s bad. I think I actually like my son’s better! I understand the sentimental meaning of it, but no, just no. Some day, Danny you will regret that. Yikes. But hey, like he cares what we all think?! And as long as he doesn’t walk around in that wifebeater t-shirt, we won’t have to look at it either!

Thanks for the vh1 reminder to vote. Don’t mind if I do!

ITA! I’m just shocked. It’s weird…there’s not a good word to describe it! hee hee

  147. See if you can see this. It’s from Danny’s twitter. (I don’t follow him, but someone retweeted it.)

None of my business but, when he’s happily remarried??………

Diane, thanks for the VH1 reminder and link. I hope Jim Shearer (VJ) says something awesome for Kris’ video intro like he did last week!!! For those of you who missed the show it went something like this:

VH1’s Jim Shearer (VJ/host) is introducing LLWD (#8) video and tells the story about the Ben Savage Tweet. He then says, “Kris, Ben was probably thinking the same thing – “Don’t freak out, Kris Allen – “Don’t freakout Kris Allen” “You’re a big star now baby!!!”

I loved that!!!!! You ARE a big star now Kris Allen!!!!!

 Cool! Yes, baby, you are!!

Oh, I love that. But, of course that is why so many people love you – Humble Kris.
The one other thing that I like about Kris winning Idol is also the plenty opportunities for him to see and meet all these people that he’s seen on TV, concerts, etc before he became “Kris Allen”
