‘Amazing Race’ beats ‘Idol, ‘ wins 6th Emmy

The CBS show has won every year since the reality category was created and it doesn’t aim to bow out any time soon.

Award shows are routinely derided as nothing more than popularity contests. That cannot be said about the Emmy winner for outstanding reality competition, which — yet again — went to CBS’ “The Amazing Race.”

The race-around-the-globe reality series, while certainly respectable in the ratings, is no match for much of its reality show competitors, most notably, Fox’s ” American Idol” — television’s most popular show (not to mention ABC’s ” Dancing With the Stars”).

Show that celebrates TV is itself a crashing bore

For a TV show that celebrates how fantastic television is, the Emmys sure manage to be an exceptionally boring TV show, even when they make history on their 60th anniversary.

Not even the presence of the five nominated reality TV show hosts could liven up the broadcast. In fact, after being introduced by Oprah, the five emcees sent the Emmys down the path of lameness with an opening that was later mocked by Jeremy Piven during his acceptance speech and by Don Rickles when he was presenting an award. That’s because the hosts literally did nothing except talk about how they had nothing prepared.

Carrie Underwood Question Brings Rant From Jessica Simpson Hairdresser

Did a question about Carrie Underwood bring an expletive laden rant from Jessica Simpson hairdresser Ken Paves? The National Enquirer reports this week that very scenario this week and adds, “If you mess with Jessica Simpson, you’ll have to answer to her hairdresser.” Look out Carrie Underwood.

According to the Enquirer, one fan learned what happens recently when the “Dukes of Hazzard” star bristled after being asked about her archenemy, Carrie Underwood. After Jess stormed away, her furious hairdresser grabbed the fan and spewed a hair-curling stream of obscenities at him.

Carrie Underwood a perfect fit for Puyallup Fair

Carrie Underwood was in her element at the Puyallup Fair.

The “All-American Girl, ” to borrow one of her song titles, offers ideal country-fair fare. It’s strong on faith-based narratives, notably “Jesus, Take the Wheel, ” and small-town values; an Okie from Muskogee, the singer was raised in nearby Checotah, Okla., population 3, 500.

Underwood even named her current CD, her second, “Carnival Ride.” And Friday night, the Puyallup Fair carnival ride her 80-minute concert most resembled might have been the Extreme Scream.

Fresh thoughts on new music

It has been two years since moviegoers watched Jennifer Hudson bring down the house in “Dreamgirls, ” more than four since “American Idol” viewers watched her sweep into the finals.

In the supersonic world of popular music, that’s a long time without an album — most “Idol” discs are rush-released to ride the momentum. But firing up quickly can also mean flaming out fast, and with the long-awaited “Jennifer Hudson” (Arista Records, THREE STARS out of four stars Sept. 30), the 27-year-old singer is aiming for something a little more enduring.

“He’s really a great guy, but no sound of wedding bells.” she laughed. “We wrote two songs for my self-titled album coming out Sept. 30. I co-wrote five of the songs. This album is so me. I was involved totally — start to finish. My first album was done in such a hurry after American Idol, but we took time with this one.” Her new producer is Chris Lindsey.

They have to step it up on ‘Dancing With the Stars’

As “Dancing With the Stars” launches its seventh season tonight (8, ABC/7), the mandate from the network and producers is change – for fans and contestants. Here’s what you’ll need to know:

MORE SHOW. There will be five full hours over three nights of “DWTS” this week, the most ever for launch week. There’s an intriguing method to this dance madness. Top boss Conrad Green is tossing the contestants right into the fire, which means they’ll need to develop their footwork quickly, or else. Moreover, there will be two couple eliminations this week (a first). Viewers will have to be instantly engaged as well. “In the past, ” says Green, contestants have “always been able to do a bit of work [before] their second and third dances.”
