Interview: Tim Urban from American Idol

Tim Urban and I discuss the tour, life after Idol, and what he thinks about Ellen’s decision to leave the judges panel after one season.

How’s the tour been?

It’s been pretty great. I feel like we’re all kind of used to it at this point, cause we’re close to being done, we have only 10 more shows, so at this point we’re all kind of in the groove. It’s really a pretty incredible tour.

The night the buzzers went dead backstage

It’s four minutes before show time, and the dreaded buzzers on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” aren’t working. They won’t light up; they won’t buzz — a potential catastrophe for a live, two-hour show that depends upon the loud, electronic “Xs” to announce that the act on stage is a dud.

“It’s happened before, ” says executive producer Jason Raff, explaining the sensitivities of electronic cables, “but we always fixed it before going on air.”

Not this time. In the master control room atCBS Television City, the nerve center of one of the industry’s most complex productions, Raff is on his feet, outlining emergency contingency plans for the crew. Vibrating with nervous energy, he is praying that the crew guy in charge of buzzers will report that the cables are fixed. But now it’s only 30 seconds before “Talent” goes live to 11 million viewers, and the “Xs” are still silent.
