American Idol Season 9 Tour: Newark We Have a Problem

For an American Idol junkie like myself, the annual “Idols Live!” concert tour is typically a perfectly timed dessert soufflé; served a good month or two after the overwhelming smorgasbord of the preceding Idol season, it provides a chance to see how the top 10 finishers fare when they’re out from under the pressure of Simon Cowell’s critiques, that notoriously grueling weekly TV schedule, and the inscrutable voting whims of the public. Last night’s season 9 showcase from the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, however, failed to follow that sweet script. To be fair, a few contestants achieved frothy new heights, but the bulk of the show had the distinctive whiff of a piece of cake that’s been lingering in the back of the fridge since late May.

American Idols Live! Shows Best Of Lee DeWyze, Crystal Bowersox

NEWARK, New Jersey — Fans of all ages donned their finest homemade puff-paint T-shirts for the American Idols Live! tour stop at the Prudential Center on Tuesday night. And judging from the excitement in the healthily populated arena, they did not leave disappointed.

Without a TV-friendly two-minute time limit for songs (and without a panel of judges ready to lay into them for any missteps), many of the season-nine performers were well-served by the live setting, particularly winner Lee DeWyze, who smiled more in his five-song set than he did in his entire run on “American Idol.”

‘I know I’ve still got a lot to prove, but I’m ready, ‘ the ‘American Idol’ castoff says of his debut, due September 14.

Josiah Leming knows you’ve probably forgotten about him. After all, there was a time not that long ago when he had forgotten about himself too.

“Absolutely, people forgotten me, and rightfully so. I haven’t given them too much to think about, ” he laughed. “I basically disappeared for a while. I had let the momentum drop. I hadn’t been writing. I was stubborn, and I was not prepared to fully dedicate myself to this. I had completely lost touch. And then, three little words popped into my head.”

Katharine McPhee “Cannot Wait” To Have Kids

Summer is a critical time of need for millions of American children who receive free and reduced-price meals during the school year. To address childhood hunger this summer, American Idol alum Katharine McPhee is joining the Hunger-Free Summer initiative through Feeding America’s partnership with the ConAgra Foods Foundation. The 26-year-old beauty opened up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about her hopes to help millions of hungry children this summer, why she became involved in this mission that “broke” her heart and her plans to have children one day.

Live Review: Fantasia at the Birchmere

It went without saying: “I came straight up out of the church, ” said Fantasia Barrino at the Birchmere Tuesday night, at the first of two sold-out shows at the Alexandria music hall. The third “American Idol” winner’s R&B style is so heavily gospel-influenced that it felt completely natural for her to slip into a Christian song, Kirk Franklin’s “So Good, ” which ended with Fantasia standing with arms outstretched, mouthing “thank you” as she looked heavenward.

Miranda Cosgrove gets her feet wet in Music City

Miranda Cosgrove doesn’t get nervous when she shoots an episode of iCarly — a Nickelodeon TV series that’s regularly watched by millions of devoted tweens. But when she performs for a thousand fans in Nashville on Friday, she’ll definitely have some butterflies, and most of them will be due to one attendee in particular.

“I’m nervous about Kris Allen being there, ” she says with a sheepish laugh.

Idol Jackie Tohn’s Got The Memphis Beat

One of my favorite “American Idol” contestants, delightful Season 8 semifinalist Jackie Tohn, got waaaaay too little screen time last year (she only sang on live TV once, sadly). But she made up for that this week with her plum role as femme fatale Delilah Boswell on “Memphis Beat, ” TNT’s new cop-rock dramedy starring Jason Lee an an Elvis-impersonating detective.

It was hardly Jackie’s first non-“Idol” television appearance–she’s also had parts on “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, ” “Veronica Mars, ” “Strangers With Candy, ” “The Sopranos, ” and “The Nanny”–but her latest star turn in “Memphis Beat’s” titilatingly titled “One Night Of Sin” episode just might be the breakout opportunity she so deserves.
