Alex Lambert leaving the If I Can Dream House?

First and foremost on all our minds today – why has Alex packed up his stuff and cleaned out his room? According to Dream Updates, after doing a bit of boxing and working on a new song last night, Alex started packing up his room in the wee hours, including laptop, mic and humidifier. When he was done packing, he went briefly to the garage. On his way back in, someone asked him a question to which he answered “no, not until later”. Justin then arrived home and asked Alex if he’d just gotten in, and Alex said “no, I can’t sleep, just thinking too much”. Later in the kitchen, Justin asked the cameraman Nick if Alex was leaving, since his stuff was packed and his room cleaned. Nick replied “I don’t know, maybe he is going home for a few days.”

UPDATE: From Dream Updates: Gig speaks with Kristen, then announces that Alex is taking a break for family and other reasons. In the second video, captured later Saturday night, Gig elaborates saying that “he has a few things going on back in Texas and wants to go back and deal with those things, and he hopes that it’s all well so that he can come back… not too much of a problem”. Gig also said that Alex’s aunt (who lives in LA) came to pick him up from the house in the afternoon. It now seems clear (based on a phone call he was heard to make before leaving the house) that Alex has asked for a leave of absence from the show to be with his grandmother, who is ill. We do not know if he is still in LA and will be returning to the house briefly to say his goodbyes, or if he has already returned to Texas. Nor do we know how long a break he will be taking.

Stagey Adam Lambert rocks Mystic Lake

On “American Idol” in 2009, Adam Lambert showed that he is a star. On Saturday night at sold-out Mystic Lake Casino, Lambert proved that he is a true star — a musical-theater mega-talent playing the role of glamorous rock star.

His voice was you-should-be-starring-in-“Phantom” fabulous. His outfits were David-Bowie-Spiders-from-Mars marvelous. His stage manner was sexy, smooth and you’ve-been-onstage-so-much confident. But this irresistible star was more stagey theatrical than spontaneous rock ‘n’ roll. Still, it was highly entertaining, a splendid balance between emotional vocalizing and merry fun.

BECAUSE SOMETIMES IT’S FUN TO FRIGHTEN THEM

Adam Lambert could single-handedly topple Rupert Murdoch’s Fox media empire and destroy the moral fiber of the country with a repeat of his American Music Awards onstage simulated fellatio, or so it seemed when American Idol was preparing for a return performance by its most successful gay graduate. Only a three-second tape delay could prevent Western civilization from descending into chaos. Good work, Idol. The globe is safe once again.

American Idol Hasn’t Saved Broadway As Much As It’s Changed Broadway

Leading up to tonight’s Tony Awards, two pieces in The New York Times wonder what happened to Broadway. Critic Charles Isherwood misses the days when the awards show honored those who performed best over the year. He claims that the spectacle is now just an excuse to show off an assortment of music from shows that aren’t deserving enough of such grandiose accolade. Moreover, it’s not a celebration of Broadway alone this year; it’s a night of music, more generally, with a “Glee” segment planned. Isherwood isn’t pleased:

Kamp says that “‘American Idol’ has been a factor, too, legitimizing the idea that a young singer can deliver a dynamic vocal performance in a nonrock, nonband context.” I think that “American idol” is centrally involved in the changing perception of Broadway. As Broadway dealt with well-publicized economic problems in recent years, it turned to overnight celebrities from the Fox show to “save” it from inevitable doom. I recently caught “Idol” contestant Constantine Maroulis perform in Rock of Ages. Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young were brought in to revive Hair, though that effort sputtered out with the announcement that the show will close at the end of the month. And “Idol” winner Jordin Sparks will soon join the cast of In The Heights.
