What went wrong with ‘American Idol’ this season? – A few weeks ago, when Sam Woolf was still competing on American Idol, Harry Connick Jr. told the handsome teenager to look directly at someone in the audience when he heard screams and smile at that person. Woolf tried it, and the camera cut to his grandparents. That moment encapsulated the problem with Idol in Season 13, which ends this week with a performance show and star-studded results finale (Fox, Tuesday and Wednesday, 8 p.m. ET/PT). No matter how much the show’s producers tried to present these singers as the voices of young America, no matter how full they packed the front of the house with screaming girls, this season’s competition boiled down to a bunch of kids singing for their elders. – Read more at USA Today

Nigel Lythgoe can’t bear to watch ‘Idol’ anymore; – “To be frank,” he said to me, “it upsets me personally having left the show to watch it. I’m hugely supportive. I love the judges. I can honestly say I have not seen much of the talent. I wish it every success.” – Read more at AJC

‘American Idol’ Bandleader Rickey Minor on His Favorite Performance and What It Takes to Win – Was there something that you saw in each of these kids when they were so young that hinted that they’d all end up becoming such huge stars? The first thing I see in them is talent. They have the talent. But that’s not enough. They have the passion. That’s not enough. All of that has to line up. So many things have to go right. These are variables you can’t qualify. Otherwise, we’d have a world of superstars! You can’t number or quantify all these wonderful things that have to happen in order for you to have a successful career. It could be timing, material, your management team. But the biggest thing is your commitment to excellence. So people like Usher, Beyoncé, Christina, Mary J. Blige—there’s a commitment that is non-tangible. You can’t teach it. You can’t read it. You can’t drink it. You either have it or you don’t, that work ethic. That combined with the talent, you have a better chance. Do you remember the Idol contestants from the past that you saw those things in them the second they arrived? That’s an easy one for me: Adam Lambert, Chris Daughtry, David Cook. You know who else? Jordin Sparks. – Read more at The Daily Beast

The Idol Insider – The Final Two

Conversations With Phillip Phillips – Mike Ragogna: Phillip, the songs on Behind The Light–not exactly a light album–seem deeper or a little more introspective than those of your previous album, The World From The Side Of The Moon. What was the creative process like for this new one? Phillip Phillips: The title itself, as you said, it’s not as light as the first album, but that’s what makes it special; it’s different and it has its own character to it. In this process, I had a little more time to play with the songs and really learn how they wanted to build themselves up, instead of me just forcing them together. It was a lot of fun because I brought my band in for a couple weeks. I wanted it to feel like a band record instead of just me. – Read more at The Huffington Post

Someone’s got the post-Vegas blues! Jordin Sparks looks downright miserable as she jets into LA sporting wrist brace following Billboard Music Awards – The Battlefield hitmaker was wearing not a lick of make-up on her flawless complexion, while she looked like she had just hopped out of bed in her pyjama-like leopard-print pants. She completed her outfit with a charcoal singlet top, matching high-top sneakers and a black hoodie. As well as carrying a black handbag and large white Hello Kitty backpack complete with the Japanese character’s signature bright red hair bow, the star wheeled along her own colourful suitcase, showing no sign of diva demands. – Read more at The Daily Mail
