X Factor Auditions Kick Off in L.A. With Nary a Momsen or Abdul in Sight

But whoever eventually ends up sitting at the judges’ table next to Cowell and Reid, they’ll naturally be looking for that special something.

“It’s intangible. It’s something you feel in your heart, ” said Wade. “When you see somebody sing, that’s what it is, and you and I would have the same opinion about that. You’ll see it on stage and be like, ‘Wow, that person’s got the X factor.'”

‘The X Factor’ draws thousands to audition in L.A.

Around 15, 000 people filled the Los Angeles Sports Arena parking lot early Sunday morning to audition for Simon Cowell’s new talent search, The X Factor. As the show’s title suggests, contestants must not only be good singers, but also possess that certain, elusive je ne sais quoi. They’ll need that special something to captivate audiences and snag the grand prize: a $5 million recording contract with Sony.

Q&A: Simon Cowell on His Search for ‘X Factor’ Talent and What He Thinks of ‘American Idol’

How do you cut through all this clutter of singing competitions? Mark Burnett is launching The Voice on NBC; everybody’s gunning to reach Death Star status like Idol.

Cowell: This has been happening for years. Mark did that same thing when he launched Rockstar, or whatever the show was called. I’ve seen a lot of shows come and go and I can now just to stick to what we do best, which is, I have very good producers working for me. And I always make a show that I want to watch. And the formulas work, to be honest with you. But there’s never any guarantee. It would be insane to tell you now that this show is going to do better than anybody else, because I haven’t started filming it yet.

Idol was notorious for tension on the set. Is it just a part of something that big and successful, there’s going to be bad blood?

Cowell: There wasn’t bad blood from my point of view. I was very grateful for the show because otherwise I wouldn’t be talking to you today. It did a lot of good for a lot of people, and we all benefited from it. It’s sad when you read about the producers saying, “I’m glad Simon’s not on the show anymore, ” that “it’s better without him, ” because you kind of wish that they would say that to your face rather than in public. Because I didn’t feel that when I was on the show. I thought we all liked each other. And that’s why I’m happy now that I’m launching something new with people who do want to work with me.

It is probably no surprise, but at retired Red Sox [team stats] ace Curt Schilling [stats]’s house, everyone’s rooting for “American Idol” wannabe James Durbin.

“He’s so great, so passionate, ” said Curt’s wife, Shonda.

“And I think it’s just great that kids — who have something nobody ever talked about before — can look at him and admire him for doing something so cool.”

Durbin, as you may know, has Asperger’s syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism. The Schillings’ son Grant, 11, suffers from the same condition.

In Charge of Her Destiny

“What excites me most about this new year in general is that I have the opportunity to use the leg up I have from being on Idol to create things and share them with the followers I already have, ” says Magnus. She is working on a summer show for the Melody Tent in Hyannis that will allow her to showcase the different styles of music that she performs.

And for other projects in the future? Magnus’ clothing style often drew sharp commentary from the American Idol judges, but the singer would never change her look for anyone. “I am all about creating my own line of clothing, and I’ve actually been scheming with a friend about that for some time now, ” says Magnus, a fan of re-fab vintage with heavy embellishments.
