INSIDE STORY: Idol Contestant’s Mother Vanishes

But the day after a family Christmas dinner, her mother, Viola Brown Martin, failed to show up at her intended destination, the house of Angela’s older sister. After the family filed a missing person’s report, the Glenwood, Ill., police found Viola’s car on New Year’s Eve in an unfamiliar neighborhood.

As of Jan. 23, Viola is still missing. “We haven’t heard anything yet, ” Martin tells PEOPLE. “The detectives have been calling my sisters and myself, and just keeping us informed. They say they are still just looking and asking us more questions, if we know anything but her friends are calling us, so it’s hard.”

Viola’s tan-colored 1999 Chrysler Cirrus was found in the south Chicago suburbs of Riverdale and Dixmoor, not close to her daughter Latrina’s home. “We haven’t stopped looking, ” Martin says. “We’ve been out in the cold, and before I left to go to Hollywood, we were looking. I think what hurts us the most was they found her car but they didn’t find her. It was abandoned in a forest preserve in the dark. We just want to know, what were you doing over there?”

A rumor that St. Petersburg native Michael Lynche was disqualified from American Idol richochets across the media universe

The Web site Reality Blurred noted Friday that Lynche’s father, Marque Lynche Sr., confirmed his son’s place in the top 24 in a story by me that was published in the St. Petersburg Times, which might violate the show’s confidentiality rules.

But neither blog cites concrete evidence connecting the newspaper story to any possible dismissal of Lynche. The Fox network has continually refused to comment on the status of contestants before it is revealed on the show and Marque Lynche Sr. has now disconnected his home phone in Sarasota, declining to comment.

Joe Jonas Learns to Be Ruthless on American Idol

Joe Jonas says he had a great time as a guest judge on American Idol — once he learned to be candid with the contestants about their performances.

“[I was] a little nervous at the start because I was kind of afraid I was going to hurt people’s feelings, ” the 20-year-old Jonas Brother told Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS-FM radio show Monday morning. “You have to really be honest. At first, you feel bad, because you see these people come through, and they just want it really bad. The first few, I was like, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah, you’re great.’ Towards like five [people] in, you have to be like, ‘I’m sorry, no. This isn’t for you.’”

Joe Jonas Was ‘Honest’ As ‘American Idol’ Guest Judge, Nick Says

Joe Jonas is the latest celebrity to sit at the judges’ table with Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi before Ellen DeGeneres joins the “American Idol” crew for Hollywood Week. Jonas joins other superstars like Katy Perry, Shania Twain and Mary J. Blige as celebrities who helped fill the void during the audition process.

Younger brother Nick said Joe enjoyed himself while taking in the Dallas tryouts in the fall. “We talked about it, and he had a great time, ” Nick told MTV News. “He said that he was nice, but he also was honest, and that’s important.”

Can ‘Idol’ hit right notes without Simon Cowell?

Without its Darth Vader, will TV’s Death Star lose its sting?

The recent announcement that Simon Cowell is leaving “American Idol” at the end of this season could make NBC’s ill-fated Leno at 10 experiment seem like a breezy little coin toss. Forced to act to keep Cowell, Fox acquiesced to his demand to step off the “Idol” express after this season in order to launch his popular UK pet project “The X Factor” (coming to Fox in the fall of 2011).

But did Fox just take the engine out of “Idol” in order to jump-start a series that may never achieve “Idol’s” level of popularity? Losing Paula Abdul was one thing, but will millions of viewers ditch the hit show once the man they love to hate is gone from the series?

‘American Idol’ Power List: We rank (and you vote on) the top 20 singers from season 9’s first two weeks

20. Katelyn Epperly (New this week): Producers inexplicably played up her divorcing-parents backstory, and (blasphemy alert!) the shaggy-maned blonde admitted she’d long been “stand-offish” about auditioning for the show. Still, Katelyn’s choice of Duffy’s “Syrup and Honey” was refreshingly left-field, and as Shania Twain noted, girlfriend has the kind of voice one might hear on a hit record.
