Carrie Underwood Lets Aslan Take the Wheel

If they gave an award for winning awards, Carrie Underwood would probably win that too. Last night, she was the big prize-getter at the first-ever American Country Awards, taking home honors for Artist of the Year. On Friday, her song “There’s A Place for Us” will be featured on the soundtrack to the movie “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.” Could the next awards-show stop for Underwood be the Oscars?

Underwood, who was given six full-size Fender Stratocaster guitars as prizes at the ACAs, called up Speakeasy today to talk about her recent honors, her new movie theme song and why she won’t try to rhyme anything with “Narnia.”

“I think that Russell Brand looks great and I would totally borrow his clothes, ” Adam said.

“I like a lot of the avant-garde runway stuff, you know, I love Galliano and Gareth Pugh. I just went to Rick Owens to buy a pair of boots in Paris that I was really excited about.

“I like stuff that is just a little bit androgynous and a little bit just special. I don’t like to do anything that’s normal, it has to be a little extra special.”

Darren Criss

San Francisco-born, LA-based Darren Criss’ path to joining the cast of Fox’s much-beloved Glee represents a particularly of-the-moment fairy tale: a Lana-Turner-in-the-malt-shop story for the digital age. It started when Criss posted A Very Potter Musical, a show he and friends at the University of Michigan theater department put together during their senior year, on the Internet. In spite of an image and sound quality that Criss calls “equivalent to that of your Uncle Jimmy filming your Christmas pageant, ” he quickly became a YouTube sensation, garnering a substantial cult following and spurring him to start a production company, Starkids, with his musical co-conspirators. The group produced a sequel to the Harry Potter musical, as well as the inarguably highbrow Me and My Dick. A brief appearance on the short-lived series Eastwick later, Criss landed on Glee playing Blaine, a member of the Warblers, a rival glee club, and love interest to Kurt.

Forget Gwyneth Paltrow as the coolest substitue teacher that ever was. Matthew Morrison spent the day instructing elementary school kids on how to make musical instruments–along with many of your other Glee faves–and as the lucky girl who got to serve as Matthew’s teacher’s aide, I know something even you diehard fans don’t know:

The real-life Mr. Schuester is way cool in the eyes of kids! Say what you want about his “40-not-Top-40” character on the show, but Matthew Morrison took the time to really connect with the future rock-star hopefuls at our table and they were visibly smitten.
