‘Rock Of Ages, ‘ The ‘Anti-Broadway Musical, ‘ Brings Hair Metal To The Theater

History has not been kind to the hair-metal era of the late 1980s.

It was a time of leather and strategically ripped denim, of bangles and hoop earrings, of pumping fists and devil horns, of eyeliner and rouge. It was a time when women lusted after men who wore more hairspray, makeup and jewelry than they did. It was a time when Poison, Mà ¶tley Crà ¼e, Whitesnake and Warrant ruled the charts, and bands with names like the Bang Tango, Britny Fox, Kix and Faster Pussycat were almost considered cool.

It was a time of glorious cheesiness. It was, to quote a hit of the era, nothin’ but a good time.

So it was just a matter of time before somebody made a hair-metal musical, right?

‘American Idol’ Daily: What’s on Jason Castro’s mind

from the “Idol” daily reports (spent preparing a big story, coming soon, about the future plans of one very special Season Seven contestant), I return to the beat to find my inbox flooded with more “Idol” news than any one humble tracker can hope to round up in one mere post. Everything from Season Eight contestant spoilers, to Grammy nominations, to Broadway shake-ups, to real estate news.

But to ease back in, here are some thoughts on this video from Jason Castro just posted on the site iamsecond.com. Shown speaking directly to the camera in a dark room, Jason shyly opens with the line, “This is a story. Are you ready for a story?” He continues, talking about one night on the “Idol” set, shot in a confessional style reminiscent of Vh1 Storytellers, or some indie-ish venue. However, in what is a slightly jarring turn for those “Idol” viewers who don’t know what is coming, he begins speaking very openly and honestly about that most taboo of prime-time TV subjects — his faith and, in particular, his born-again Christian faith, talking about his devotion to Christ and how God animates his singing.

‘American Idol finalist has a hit with reserve champ in cutting horses

For Kristy Lee Cook, riding cutting horses is nothing compared with her day job.

Cook made the American Idol finals last season and currently has a song in the country Top 40, 15 Minutes of Shame. But Cook put on another kind of show Friday during her third Celebrity Cutting event at Will Rogers Coliseum in Fort Worth.

As in her real job, Cook was successful. The recording artist took home the title of reserve champion, teaming with chef Jon Bonnell.

Eighteen entrants ‘ including doctors, singers and politicians ‘ competed in the 14th annual Celebrity Cutting in conjunction with the National Cutting Horse Association World Championship Futurity.

The 2003 American Idol winner Ruben Studdard will take the stage at The University of Texas at Tyler R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center in the Broadway musical “Ain’t Misbehavin.'”

“For those who love this upbeat, jazzy style, you won’t be disappointed in this revue filled with stylized dance of the era that Fats Waller music helped define, ” Cowan Center Director Susan Thomae-Morphew said.

The Fats Waller musical is a part of the Performing Arts Series and will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29.

Catching up with Diana DeGarmo, Chikezie before Athens concert

I wont be able to catch the Athens concerts tonight and tomorrow (if anybody goes, please email me your pics/roundup at rho@ajc.com!). You have to wonder how they are going to fill the 2, 100-seat Classic Center. I do plan to catch up with Justin Guarini at the free Salvation Army concert at 6 p.m. Sunday.

And I did talk briefly with Diana DeGarmo and Chikezie. I didnt have a huge amount to ask Chikezie. Given his R&B skills, Im sure hell be able to get gigs in the near future. A big star? That a high order.

Paula Abdul Selling ‘Suicide Home’

Paula Abdul has put her Los Angeles mansion up for sale, just weeks after an obsessed fan, Paula Goodspeed, killed herself outside the “American Idol” host’s home.

“Paula simply feels she has outgrown her house, ” a spokesman for Abdul told Us Weekly Magazine. “And given the recent public disclosure of her address, it seemed time that she move into a gated community.”

Cowell: ‘Rhydian should have won’

Simon Cowell has revealed that he thinks Rhydian Roberts should have won last year’s X Factor.

The judge admitted that Roberts, who took second place in the competition, was a more talented singer and performer than eventual winner Leon Jackson.

Speaking before Roberts’s recent performance of ‘The Impossible Dream’ on The X Factor, Cowell told The Times: “Well, I think he’s going to prove something tonight, which is that he should have won.

“I know I’m not supposed to say Rhydian should have won but it’s true. I believe that 100%.”

Who could replace Simon Cowell?

Pity poor Simon Cowell. For years he has been forced not only to endure the media spotlight but also to sit on judging panels, without anyone ever asking him if he really actually wanted to be famous.

Still, thank goodness he’s finally found the nerve to stand up for himself. He’s even suggested that he might step down as an X Factor judge in 2009. Who could replace him?
