CMT to tape ‘Artists of the Year’ program at Franklin venue

FRANKLIN — Billed as an exclusive gathering of the industry’s best, Country Music Television is taping its inaugural Artists of the Year program in Franklin.

Carrie Underwood, Jason Aldean, Lady Antebellum, Taylor Swift and the Zac Brown Band are the guests of honor, and about 250 friends and colleagues will join them Tuesday at The Factory at Franklin. The event is intended to be a celebration of the musicians who led 2010 in album and song sales, radio airplay, concert sales and Web hits as tracked on CMT.com.

The winners have already been announced, so the suspense rests in the musical performances, said John Hamlin, executive producer of the program. Hamlin described the concept as similar to Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy party in which the industry’s elite gather for a glamorous night of music and socializing. Songs from each of the five country stars being honored by CMT will be performed, Hamlin said, but not necessarily by the artists themselves.

The mix of participants at the fifth annual Tracy Lawrence Mission Possible turkey fry included Brad Arnold of 3 Doors Down, Bo Bice, Lorrie Morgan, Burns & Poe, the Tennessee Titans cheerleaders and many others. Brookstein takes on Cowell for No 1

X Factor’s first ever winner Steve Brookstein is planning to take on Simon Cowell for the Christmas number one this year.

Steve has recorded a cover of Peter Gabriel’s hit Don’t Give Up, the Sun reports, which he is selling for homeless charity Street Smart, and he hopes it will beat this year’s X Factor winner to the top of the charts.

The 42-year-old housewives’ favourite won the singing talent show in 2004 with six million votes, a record until Joe McElderry beat it last year.

  1. LOL @ Steve Brookstein.

Is the pressure getting to the X Factor girls? Cher, Katie and Rebecca look exhausted leaving rehearsals

Katie Waissel was up at 5am today to get a head start on practising. She told fans on Twitter: ‘Wow this must be THE earliest I have ever woken up and rehearsed lol!’

But while Katie has been on shaky ground since the start of the competition, now even favourites like One Direction are feeling the pressure.

The teens were in the studios until past 2am rehearsing for this weekend’s show.

And some of them appear to be feeling the strain. 17-year-old Niall Horan moaned to his 65,000 Twitter fans about the lack of sleep.

He wrote during the evening: ‘At the recording studio, not finished just yet, sooo tired.’

The boys finally were dismissed in the early hours of this morning. Horan tweeted: ‘Just finished now in studio. So tired.’

He added: ‘Anyone tries to wake me up early, I will throw a sponge cake at their face.’

    Damn. Rehearsals until 2 am?

  2. Roughstock.com country music site has a review of Danny’s holiday single “Tennessee Christmas.” They tend to like Danny there, this is no exception.

The production is laid-back, acoustic and down-right perfect giving a natural pocket where Danny ‘s voice is able to shine without ever reaching operatic ‘diva’ moments. This is thekind of joyful, relaxing holiday music that fits well between the sugary up-tempo classics like “Holly Jolly Christmas” and “Winter Wonderland” so as to not bash in our heads wondering why we’re out shopping over and over again. It’s an expertly made tune and if this is an indication of where Danny Gokey’s country music future is heading, then count me an even bigger fan of his chances of success in country music, even if he lands far closer to the ‘pop’ side of the large country tent than in the traditional side.

  3. Thanks, Steph. That is a very nice review of Danny Gokey’s Christmas Single.

Pretty accurate review also IMO; highlights what I love about the song- the acoustic version is mellow and does really showcases his voice.

Happy shopping everyone! Leaving to check out the Black Friday thread…..

  4. Thanks, Steph. That is a very nice review of Danny Gokey’s Christmas Single.

Pretty accurate review also IMO; highlights what I love about the song- the acoustic version is mellow and does really showcases his voice.

One of the things I like about Danny’s voice is that he has a lot of warmth and depth, while that raspy side keeps it from being too icky-sweet or sentimental. That mix works well for this type of holiday song, I think.

  5. The Virgin Radio Interview with Adam is wonderful — even though it is many of the same questions, he always comes up with new twists in the answers.

Beautiful version of WWFM with Monte on Guitar — same basic arrangement as Acoustic Live WWFM but faster tempo and some different vocalization.

  6. Are you ready to rock?!

Boy bands aren’t usually known for their heavy metal attitude and rough and ready images, more like shiny hair and perfect smiles (swoon!).

Dodgy perms and scary snarls at the ready! First up it’s…

He’s got a lust for life!

    Liam “Freddie” Payne
    He will rock you!

    Niall “Ozzy” Horan
    Shaaaarroooooonnn!

    Harry “Jagger” Styles
    He can’t get no satisfaction!

    Zain “Hendrix” Malik

  7. I read the Roughstock review of Danny’s “Tennessee Christmas” song and I appreciated what the writer of that blog said about why this song is so appealing amidst the glut of Christmas songs we hear this time of year.

“Joyful and relaxing” with just enough edge when Danny adds his “raspy-voiced strength” in parts to make it the perfect song to calm even the most frantic Christmas shoppers!

  8. Q3:

Beautiful version of WWFM with Monte on Guitar — same basic arrangement as Acoustic Live WWFM but faster tempo and some different vocalization.

Another beautiful performance, plus Adam being his usual charming self.

  9. I really like Danny’s “Tennessee Christmas” — and actually think Danny is putting out quality music and plan to see him live next time he is in the mid-South. (I will only put up with Tunica, MS for Adam so I passed on that one — but I am not far from Nashville so certain I will have a chance.)

But this reference in that review just struck me as odd….and I really don’t understand it:

The production is laid-back, acoustic and down-right perfect giving a natural pocket where Danny‘s voice is able to shine without ever reaching operatic ‘diva’ moments.

I don’t think there is any chance that Danny would have an “operatic ‘diva’ moment” — he doesn’t have an operatic-style of singing and he is really an anti-diva (or more properly divo). And if a vocalist did “diva-ize” this song (“Tennessee Christmas”), it would just be awful.

Is there a diva-ized version of this song?

  10. Q3…I hope you do get a chance to check out a Danny concert! I believe you will not be disappointed….we would love to read your thoughts on it afterwards too.

I have had to travel to see the four shows I attended (so far he hasn’t come to the West Coast as often as where you live) and will do it again once he announces his new tour schedule (even if it is Tunica, MS…lol!)

Danny has gotten better with each concert I have gone to and his fans and those that come to his show have discovered that, in addition to his incredible voice (which is even better live BTW), his true gift is performing and his ability to connect with his audience through his charisma on stage.

  11. Q3

I think what the reviewer maybe was referring to was Danny’s power voice. I guess I took that statement to mean his voice shines without using his big power moments (which he does like to do. I guess Oh Holy Night from last year kind of had one of those “fill up the room with power” kind of moments).

But yeah, referring to opera was confusing I also thought.

You won’t regret seeing him live (and I would see him at one of his own shows vs opening for someone)- his voice comes through better in a live setting, vs recorded, IMO. You can buy a Meet & Greet pass for $25 ($$ go to his charity)at http://www.sophiasheart.org under “Take Action” to meet him ahead of time and get a pic and a hug if you want one. He does sign after for everyone, but no pics or contact then.
But short of the Opry (which is not a real Danny concert- his full band isn’t there with him, and they get 3 songs apiece usually) he probably won’t have a concert until Spring. Although you never know with him; he will get bored just working on his album I think; he loves to perform.

  12. I think Danny and Matt Giraud may have traveled to Chicago (halfway for each of them) to Christmas shop. They would be more “incognito” than in their home towns. I think that may be the Ralph Lauren store on Chicago shopping strip.

Here is a pic today from a fan, and possibly friend of both:

    http://twitpic.com/3adx8i

Aww; those two are so cute in their bromance; I’m glad they have really stayed in touch and seen each other quite a few times since the tour ended. It would be great if Matt could go on Danny’s SHF charitable cruise.

  13. Interesting that Crystal got the WTMX gig. They added her as a special guest, as the line-up has been set since September. Last year Kris did Miracle on State Street. Funny hometown boy Lee didn’t get an invite. Seems Crystal is getting higher profile events. Must be Gina Orr working her magic, 19E must really be missing her.

  14. Thanks for that Danny/Matt pic Indigobunting! I love that they have remained friends since their AI days together despite the different directions their careers have gone.

I remembered Danny said in a recent interview that he was talking to some of his artist friends about coming on his cruise so there would be more music for those that go….would be fun if Matt was one of those he was inviting. Those two together on a cruise ship would guarantee lots of laughs!

  15. Correction; for any stalkers, lol. It appears that pic of Danny and Matt is from Nov. 16- she has another pic (with her same scarf) with Danny from that date so somehow before the WI concert weekend those two boys met up.

Oh, that makes sense. Word choice was odd and threw me off.

I have seen a number of Idol alums live in concert — and am rarely disappointed. I doubt that Danny will break my string because I like his voice and he has improved so much since Idol. And, I liked his voice on the Idols Live! Tour (the choreo, not so much but that was not Danny’s idea and doubt that he will ever do that agian. :) )

In any case, yes, I will report back on Danny. And expect it to be a good report.

It seems like Crystal is getting alot of the events Kris did last year, including this one and the Napa concert. It may be that those events have a relationship with Jive since they are both on the same label. I don’t really see them as being more high profile than some of the gigs that Lee has coming up including the jingle balls he’s performing at.

That was a funny statement for me also. I’m not sure what he was referring to, as on AI and in his subsequent music Danny has a pretty naturalistic voice all in all, though in O Holy Night last Christmas he unleashed a couple of full-on power notes that to me sounded more like a “trained” voice.

I also thought the Lee Greenwood comparison was interesting. I’d have to look into that more to see why he said that, the only Lee Greenwood I really know is “God Bless the USA,” lol.

If you’re near enough to Nashville that it’s convenient, it might be worth going to see Danny at the Opry (Dec 14); Rascal Flatts is also performing, should be a fun holiday show. But agree with the others, Danny’s own headline shows give the best overall experience for his vocals, crowd energy, and how much he’s been improving in stage presence.

ETA: The Lee Greenwood reference seems to be at least in part about Danny’s strengths in singing ballads. He is very well-rounded and his up-tempo songs work great for him in concert, so I don’t think he’s exclusively about ballads. But it will be interesting if there is more of a mix on his second album. Album #1 had only a few ballads on it (IWNSG, Tiny Life, It’s Only, and possibly Crazy Not To depending on where you draw the line with mid-tempo songs).

This is a radio promo deal — so it is more about the deal than the hometown of the artist.

Last year, Jive made the promo deal for that WTMX gig. Gina might be involved this year but probably not responsible for putting it together. Radio promo is up to Jive.

But I actually think that the promotion for Crystal is pretty low key compared to the past 19R/Jive artists. Looks more like Allison’s promo than Jordin, Kris or Archie. And Allison was a #4 finisher.

One huge difference is that WTMX started playing and added LLWD less than two weeks after the song was released, but they’ve only played Farmer’s Daughter twice. Adding a new song at such an early date is out of the norm for this station, they just added Airplanes last month, and didn’t add Adam’s latest song until two or three weeks before it peaked, so LLWD’s early add seems to have been payback for Jive letting him do the show, plus it was a way for the station to promote one of the acts who was doing their show.

The event is just a normal radio show, but the big “get” is getting the station to spin the song. If Crystal could get the HAC station in the third biggest market in the country to play her song, that would catch the attention of a lot of other PDs, but the fact that that hasn’t happened with any regularity, and especially with the concert being a week away, should be a concern.

  21. so LLWD’s early add seems to have been payback for Jive letting him do the show, plus it was a way for the station to promote one of the acts who was doing their show.

So WTMX wanted Kris so bad that did something outside their NOP to get him on the show. Nice work Jive!!! :-)

No, no chance of me driving 4 hours to see Rascal Flatts. I’ll wait for a solo Danny gig — and I am sure I will not have to wait too long. There are only a few artists I just can’t take and Nickelback and Rascal Flatts are 1, 2 on that list for me. But they both have tons of fans and can easily live without me! :)

  23. Another review for Lee is up at AllMusic – I’m not sure I’m allowed to link it, but suffice to say he managed two out of five stars with the last line a painful, “When things are light and simple on Live It Up, DeWyze seems like himself: a threadbare talent who floated in on the vapors of Idol’s empty tank.” Ouch.

  24. When things are light and simple on Live It Up, DeWyze seems like himself: a threadbare talent who floated in on the vapors of Idol’s empty tank.”

This line is rough, but even though the review is short, it is one of the more in depth reviews that I’ve seen for LIU.

    This part is really interesting:

19 Recordings team their winner with an army of professionals led by Toby Gad and John Shanks but they don’t dictate the direction of the album; they shape DeWyze’s singsong strum-alongs and MOR pop into something resembling a triple-A chart hit, letting similarities to Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, and John Mayer stand strong.

I agree with this, and think it says something about RCA that aside from SS they let Lee release an album that shows people what type of sound he’s going for as an artist. His songs may not be as strong as Mayer, Mraz and Johnson’s, and writing these types of songs takes more time than Lee had, but Lee’s musical identity comes through on these songs.

The line about keeping things simple, and this one

but the shellacked attempts at glassy modern pop dampen whatever personality DeWyze may have

don’t seem like he’s putting Lee down, he’s talking about the album being over produced, which happens with all AI debut albums, and which masks the very things that helped them advance to the final round on AI. The reviewer seems to get that Lee is at his best when he’s leaning more towards folk rock or folk-pop and not pop.

Adam get Gold certification for WWFM in Switzerland. They also state that IIHY will be the next single there.

IIHY was released as the 2nd single in Germany, Austria and Switzerland a couple of weeks ago. It is getting airplay in all three countries.

  26. Crystal is performing at the WTMX jingle ball pre show, didn’t Kris perform at the main event jingle ball? I don’t have as strong of a recollection of what Kris’ events were last year though. Lee is also doing the Live at 5 show for WTMX on Monday.

  27. tigervixxxen:

Yes, Kris was at the main event and got #2 billing — The Fray headlined. http://mjsbigblog.com/kris-allen-to-appear-with-the-fray.htm

MIX FM Chicago does not have a Jingle Ball style arena event. This year’s main concert is in The Chicago Theater (3,600 seats), last year’s was at the The Auditorium Theatre (3,929 seats). But Crystal is not part of the concert.

Crystal is at the pre-party at Block 37 Shops (State & Randolph) in Chicago IL which is not the main concert at The Chicago Theater. Block 37 is a partially completed urban mall in The Loop with 15 stores opened now. Kind of a strange place. But it has a Disney Store now so should have a lot of traffic. As far as I can tell this is a free mall event.

Lee has a nice MIX FM event on Monday:

MIX After 5 Live with American Idol Winner Lee DeWyze

THE MIX presents another AFTER 5 LIVE on Monday, November 29 at 6 P.M. at Chicago’s Hard Rock Cafe’ at the corner of Clark & Ontario.

This FREE, all ages show will feature a special live performance by American Idol winner Lee DeWyze and Gregory Hyde!

Doors open at 5 P.M. Performance starts at 6:15 P.M.

  28. I like Matt from Roughstock, he is not afraid to give his opinion about a song. He has always give Danny the chance to prove himself in this genre with out always falling back on the Christian singer meme.

I think that the opera diva comment is in reference to some view that Danny has a tendency,in their opinion, to sing to the rafters. It is not a trait that a lot of male country singers have so it is a bit of a novelty. It is something you find lot in singers from AI as they have to get to the meat of a song in a minute 30.

Glad he liked Danny’s version of TC, now let’s see what radio will do with it.

  29. The unauthorized Adam album Take Two has been taken off Amazon. Maybe they were able to block it?? I hope so!

  30. Elliegrll and Q3, thanks for the insights and information regarding lee’s music and performances. have to say, learned a lot today about the previous & upcoming performances of idols. complicated promo stuff. looking forward to all of lee’s christmas gigs :)

  31. http://www.todayonline.com/Travel/EDC101127-0000021/Jetsetting-with-,,,-David-Archuleta

In the three short years since the talent show, David Archuleta has travelled extensively to promote his music and he’s excited to chalk up more stamps in his passport.

In town recently to promote his album The Other Side Of Down, Archie was showing telling signs of jetlag – frequent yawning and bloodshot eyes – but was alert when asked about the other boy wonder, 16-year-old Justin Bieber.
    -snip-

What’s the first thing you do when you get into a new hotel room?

I’d see what sort of snacks there are. I told you I like eating! (Laughs) Oh, and I check out the bathrooms, too, as they sometimes differ in design.

^^ lol. short little interview some neat questions answers, haha, more at link.

  32. Adam did another French radio interview for Goom Radio. There is talk about album #2, FYE and other stuff.

    http://twaud.io/q1Jk

    Good interview.
It’s been a while since I caught up with an interview from Adam, so a lot of the stuff is new for me.
The interviewer shouldn’t be refering to the french equivalent of AI, it was never as big of a show and was canceled last year, I wonder if that’s part of why AI contestants have never had much success in France.

  33. Katharine McPhee should sing with Adam. I would love to see these big ass voices sing together. Adam is magic in duets. I think she is worthy of his time! He is worthy of her time. :)

Personally, I am tiring of Lee being the punching bad for Idol’s decline. If you don’t like the album, fine, but leave the condition of the show out of it. I’d seriously like to find out what some of these critics do like, though.
