CMT to tape ‘Artists of the Year’ program at Franklin venue

FRANKLIN — Billed as an exclusive gathering of the industry’s best, Country Music Television is taping its inaugural Artists of the Year program in Franklin.

Carrie Underwood, Jason Aldean, Lady Antebellum, Taylor Swift and the Zac Brown Band are the guests of honor, and about 250 friends and colleagues will join them Tuesday at The Factory at Franklin. The event is intended to be a celebration of the musicians who led 2010 in album and song sales, radio airplay, concert sales and Web hits as tracked on CMT.com.

The winners have already been announced, so the suspense rests in the musical performances, said John Hamlin, executive producer of the program. Hamlin described the concept as similar to Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy party in which the industry’s elite gather for a glamorous night of music and socializing. Songs from each of the five country stars being honored by CMT will be performed, Hamlin said, but not necessarily by the artists themselves.

Brookstein takes on Cowell for No 1

X Factor’s first ever winner Steve Brookstein is planning to take on Simon Cowell for the Christmas number one this year.

Steve has recorded a cover of Peter Gabriel’s hit Don’t Give Up, the Sun reports, which he is selling for homeless charity Street Smart, and he hopes it will beat this year’s X Factor winner to the top of the charts.

The 42-year-old housewives’ favourite won the singing talent show in 2004 with six million votes, a record until Joe McElderry beat it last year.
