American Idol’ goes for diversity, divas – LOS ANGELES • “American Idol” opens its 12th season on Wednesday, still a ratings powerhouse, but a shadow of what it used to be. The Season 11 finale last May was the top-rated show of the week, with more than 21 million viewers, but down almost a third from the previous low for a finale. ‘American Idol’ hangs on despite critics, challenges – “There’s no question that ‘American Idol’ is no longer the cultural force it once was,” said Jon Burlingame, a TV historian who teaches at the University of Southern California. “It has been on the downhill slide for the last two or three years, and that will continue. The demographic that consumes music has given up on it.” The numbers show how far “American Idol” has fallen. During its peak fifth season, the Fox reality show was averaging 30 million viewers. NBC TO OFFER VIEWERS A SNEAK PEEK OF THE FIRST HOUR OF THE TWO-HOUR SECOND SEASON ‘SMASH’ PREMIERE ON MONDAY, JANUARY 14 – UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – January 11, 2013 – NBC will offer viewers a sneak peek at the first hour of the two-hour season premiere of the Golden Globe-nominated drama “Smash” on Monday, January 14 across multiple platforms — three weeks before the second-season debut on February 5 (9–11 p.m. ET). “Smash” will be available across multiple-platforms that include: on demand and online through cable, satellite and telco providers; NBC.com; NBC Owned and affiliate station websites (should they choose to opt in); Hulu (including Hulu’s online distribution partners); iTunes, Amazon and Xbox. The first hour will also be a part of American Airlines in-flight entertainment offerings on domestic flights from January 15 – 31.
