Has Hollywood turned Winnie Mandela into Aung San Suu Kyi?

“I am needed here, ” intones young Jennifer-as-Winnie, dynamic as she is humble, about 45 seconds into the trailer – keening violins being tuned up just out of shot. We soon see why: once her husband was convicted of sabotage and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964, the film appears to suggest Winnie singlehandedly propped up the ANC’s democracy mission for an entire quarter-century. “I will continue the struggle for a free and equal South Africa!” she exclaims testily, violins really hitting their stride now. For those who find this dialogue too oblique, helpful intertitles egg her on insistently: “Her strength … her courage … became his hope.”

Alas, in this 240-second canonisation, the sole whisper of any wrongdoing on her part is a teary apology to the parents of Stompie Moeketsi, the teenaged activist in whose murder she was notoriously complicit. Even that’s an airbrushing: the actual statement dragged out of Winnie at the Truth & Reconciliation Commission in 1997 was a grudging expression of regret at the boy’s fate, not an admission of culpability.

J.Lo Opens Up About ‘American Idol’ & New Fashion Collaboration

“Sometimes it’s great, and sometimes it’s like, ‘Oh no!’” Jennifer told Tony, when asked how she feels when “Idol” contestants audition by singing one of her songs. “But it’s always entertaining.

“[Judging ‘Idol’] has been like sitting there and watching the show for five hours a day, which, hello, how else would I want to spend my days except in bed watching ‘American Idol’ all day?” Jennifer continued. “It’s been so much fun.”

“I was pleasantly surprised, ” Marc told Tony, of his wife’s enthusiasm. “She was like, ‘I think I [can] really do this!’

The veteran rocker believes the music industry is in crisis – and he blames Simon.

Roger said: “We really need to break away from The X Factor and American Idol – that Simon Cowell thing.

Brandy: “I Feel A Lot Better” Since DWTS Shocker

“I feel a lot better, ” Brandy, 31, told Us at Thursday’s Hot Hollywood: Stars Who Care bash at the Colony Club in Hollywood.

An early favorite on DWTS, the singer said Tuesday she was “numb” when she learned she wouldn’t be advancing to the final three, while the low-scoring Bristol Palin would vie for the trophy alongside Jennifer Grey and Kyle Massey.

“The love that I’ve been receiving has been overwhelming, ” Brandy told Us. “And when you have people supporting you, it makes you feel better. So I feel good.”

Dancing’s Maks “Disappointed in a Lot of Things”; Thanks Fans for “Humongous Support”

I wouldn’t say I’m mad about the result, but I am disappointed. I am disappointed in a lot of things. I’m disappointed in the hate. I’m disappointed in comments, not just from viewers. Whenever I speak, I speak publicly. One thing about me people know by now is that you will never say “Hey, did you hear what Maks secretly said?” If I have anything to say, I say it publicly because I want to take responsibility for my words. If I’m wrong, I’ll take responsibility, apologize or take my words back. I can’t take words back for things I didn’t say. I was very disappointed, shocked and hurt to hear that Bristol told a magazine that I don’t like her. It’s a complete and absolute lie what she said. I have no idea where she got that from. I never ever said I don’t like her — nevermind the fact that it’s not true that I don’t like her. The only thing I’ve said about her is that I think she should embrace the show more when she got homesick — which is something I would say to every celebrity who comes on the show and has a low point midseason. I have nothing against Bristol, the Palins, politics, the tea party and whatnot. I respect what she’s done on the show and her place in the final.

‘Dancing’ toward reform

After Brandy was booted from “Dancing With the Stars” Tuesday night, a solid source at “DWTS” told me, “People here went crazy.

“Not only was everyone stunned that Bristol [Palin] will be in the finals, ” the staffer said, “it just made everyone realize the voting system really needs to be changed. This is going to lead to a reworking of the entire voting system.

“There definitely will be a restructuring to give the judges’ votes more weight. … It’s tricky, because like ‘American Idol, ’ the strength of ‘Dancing With the Stars’ popularity is the fact people know they can have an impact. We don’t want to lose that because that could have a detrimental effect on ratings, but this is getting nuts.”

Glee: Will Kurt & Blaine Kiss?

“Not yet, ” Chris Colfer told me the other night at the GQ Men of the Year party when I asked about kissing Darren Criss.

He laughed, “I don’t know, but I think maybe one gay kiss is enough for at least these 10 episodes. Maybe another one in the back nine wouldn’t hurt.”

Colfer also kinda confirmed that Criss will be following up his hit rendition of “Teenage Dream” with Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister.”
