American Idol at 10: Embracing Roots, Competing With Dad

The question has been asked before, but never so loudly and intensely as now: Does American Idol still have what it takes to remain America’s most-watched show? When the decade-old Fox reality series returns in January, will it remain king of the hill on prime-time television – or will its recent ratings slide intensify?

Such ponderings have new prominence, of course, because of the departure from the show of its symbolic father — iconic judge Simon Cowell — after nine seasons.

Interview: Danny Gokey talks ‘Idol’, personal struggles and his latest single

P-C: “American Idol” held tryouts in Milwaukee this past July; how does it feel to be solely responsible for bringing the show to Wisconsin?
Gokey: Yeah, actually they’re the ones who said they came back because of me, and I was very shocked that they said that. I was always an advocate of Milwaukee and trying to get them to come and they finally did it and the producer was like, “You know we’re here because of you, right?” and I was blown away. … It felt wonderful because I didn’t win “American Idol, ” but even though I didn’t win, I made an impression on the show that lasted. And I came from Milwaukee and Milwaukee’s got a lot of arts, a lot of great things going on, but it’s always been overshadowed by Chicago. So I was very happy to be able to help put Milwaukee on the map.

Exclusive Photos: A Day with Women on the Verge Cutie Justin Guarini

Justin Guarini is giving a standout Broadway debut performance as Carlos, the charmingly nervous son of Lucia (Patti LuPone) and Ivan (Brian Stokes Mitchell) in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. For those who know him only as the runner-up to Kelly Clarkson in the first season of American Idol, Guarini’s ease on the musical stage is a happy surprise. Shortly after Lincoln Center Theater’s production opened at the Belasco Theatre, the rising star invited Broadway.com photographer Jenny Anderson to join him for a morning walk with his dog Blue, a stop at his favorite organic juice bar and backstage at the Belasco, where he shared his pre-show transformation (including eyebrow enhancement). Click on for a fresh look at Justin Guarini.

‘DWTS’: Ballas Defends Bristol, Calls Carrie Ann ‘Ridiculous’

“I wish I could’ve joined in, ” a sour Ballas told Fancast after the show, speaking about the booing. “It’s ridiculous, comments like that. It’s just ridiculous. Last week she pounded on Bristol for her musicality and then our dance this week had 15 tempo changes – usually we have zero tempo changes. She stayed on every beat perfectly. She used her toes; she was moving her hair around like she never moved it before. And [Carrie Ann’s] like, ‘Oh, you could’ve uh uh uh…’ and I just tuned her out after that.”

So what do you really think, Mark? “When they give me constructive criticism and it makes sense, I will absolutely take that and work on it and improve on it, ” he continued. “But when you have someone like Bristol who has improved out of sight, and you just say something like that, it’s just like petty. It’s like whatever.”

‘Glee’ Bully Max Adler ‘As Shocked As Anyone’ By Kiss Scene

“We just kind of showed up. I said [to Colfer], ‘Hey, how are you doing? Ready to do this?’ And he said, ‘Yeah.’ And the crew was really mature about it. No one was teasing or poking fun, everyone was really cool, ” Adler said. “And Chris was just great. He’s probably the best actor I’ve worked with. He just gives so much and you connect with him in every take. As soon as we did the first few rehearsals, he said, ‘I have a feeling this is going to be a pretty important scene.’ I said, ‘I’m kinda getting that vibe too.’ And then we just did it and committed and focused. We didn’t really talk to each other in between takes, kept our game faces on and went home for the night.

“So, yeah, first time I’ve kissed a guy, and I’m glad it was Chris Colfer!” Adler laughed.
