Exclusive! “Glee”‘s Ryan Murphy Discusses Darren Criss, Whether Kurt and Blaine Will Be Boyfriends and More!

AE: How is Blaine going to play into that?
Murphy: I don’t know. We’re just writing him now. Darren has become such a sensation in one week, which I love. I think there’s a hunger for him and a positive relationship role model. He’ll definitely continue through the year and longer. We just signed a deal with him, so I don’t know.

AE: He’s confirmed to be a regular for the remainder of Season 2 and next season as well?
Murphy: Yes.

AE: Is Blaine going to be Kurt’s boyfriend?
Murphy: I don’t know. That I have not decided. We’re writing it. I want to see what people’s reaction to that is. Part of me thinks he should be the boyfriend, part of me thinks he should just be the mentor. I didn’t want to decide that until we got into sort of the middle of the season. We’re figuring it out now.

Danny Gokey Marks Territory in Green Hills

Faith in Christ does not flush toilets, at least not for Danny Gokey. According to a Facebook status update posted last night by an unnamed employee of an unnamed, upscale tea store — a tea-tery, if you will — in the Green Hills Mall, bespectacled contemporary Christian country singer and eighth season American Idol third place finalist, Danny Gokey, had an epic fail in the common courtesy department when he neglected to flush a store toilet after relieving himself yesterday. A screen cap of said update appears above. The names of the innocent have been blacked out, but the name of the accused remains.

Taylor Hicks helps to honor Clint Eastwood at Museum of Tolerance International Film Festival

Hicks said hadn’t tackled the “Gran Torino” theme before, but was happy to do so as a salute to Eastwood. Hicks embellished the tune a bit, adding a harmonica part he’d improvised during rehearsal.

“What an honor it was to get a personal call from Clint Eastwood, asking me to do this, ” said Hicks, 34, a Hoover native. “It made my day.”

According to Hicks, he and Eastwood became acquainted two years ago at the Bob Hope Classic, a golf tournament in California.

Behind the scenes at Fox’s megahit series ‘Glee’

Music director Adam Anders not only prepares the music, but also orchestrates it, another gargantuan job. “I think this is the most civil you will ever see us because we are always fighting for time, ” he says. “We never have enough time, of course. But you gotta make it work.”

Anders labors an episode ahead of the others. “When they’re shooting, the music has to be done, ” he says. He works with a partner in Sweden. “We arrange everything … we take our cues from (co-creator) Ryan Murphy. ‘Do you want this to be a kind of ode to the original? Do you want a reinvention? What are we looking for here?’ We’re trying to serve the story, and we go from there.

“But, my whole thing is to kind of straddle the fence between what ‘Glee’ is – the inspiration and everything – and not going cheesy. And that’s kind of what I’m always trying to do. Because it’s a little bit of camp, but we never go too far. So when I do go too far, that’s the stuff you never hear.”

On-screen couple Lea Michele and Cory Monteith talk about real-life “Glee” hookups!

Talking to Teen Vogue, the two address the obvious: Who’s getting together behind the scenes?

“Oh, we’ve all gotten down and dirty, ” Lea jokes. “It’s like, nasty. We can’t keep our hands off each other … no, I hate to be boring, but we’re just friends. I think Mark [Salling, who plays Puck] and Naya [Rivera, who plays Santana] dated for a little while…”

  1. They used Jordin Sparks’ song Battlefield in a new Disney Channel Movie, Avalon High this past Friday night.

  2. AE: Is Blaine going to be Kurt’s boyfriend?
Murphy: I don’t know. That I have not decided. We’re writing it. I want to see what people’s reaction to that is. Somebody should tell Murphy that some shows come up with story arcs that span more than 5 minutes. I’m pretty sure that half of the year’s episodes are already in the can (this week episod 9 of 22 airs). When is he planning on figuring out what to do with this guy he just gave a contract to?

Story arcs are wonderful things. They allow a complex story to build over several episodes. They help with continuity. They allow things to happen that make sense rather than come charging in right out of left field.

Glee can be a very frustrating show. The plot seems to careen in more directions than a bunch of bumper cars driven by drunken frat boys. Or a group of five year olds playing soccer hopped up on Halloween candy.

  3. It would be great to have that teen male/male relationship on a show that has such a great audience as Glee, but it’s Glee and they can’t write relationships. And they already tease with the whole Santana/brittany thing and don’t take it serious at all (and obviously it will never go anywhere), so I wouldn’t have many expectations.

    LOL indeed.

That’s really great for Taylor. Gran Torino is such a wonderful movie that was robbed by the Oscars.

  4. Listen to an acoustic version of the Lee DeWyze single, “Sweet Serendipty”

oof..that was just plain awful. Lee can do much better. The song?

  5. WOW, loved Lee’s acoustic version of Sweet Serendipity! Who needs any background vocals after listening to that!

  6. That acoustic Sweet Serendipity was amazin!! It’s his best version yet live!! Going to listen again!! :)

  7. I’ve gotten used to the faster, pop version, so I had to listen to this version twice. The first time to get used to the slower pace and the second time to be able to critique it. I kinda like it though. What’s he going to do really. He got booked to an acoustic gig and he’s got to push the single, so he changed it up. He’s not the first and won’t be the last. I just recently heard David Cook’s acoustic Light On and liked that as well. But I personally like hearing acoustic versions of these songs. Makes it interesting. That said, I’m glad the single is faster paced. I think it is more memorable that way.

  8. Lee’s acoustic version of SS is fabulous! The song is so upbeat and cheerful! Life is hard enough without having the songs I listen to remind me of that. I’m glad Lee’s song makes me smile!!! :)

  9. This is strange…I absolutely hate the faster version of SS. It’s so annoying imo but I love the acoustic version and can’t stop listening to it.

  10. I don´t mind slowing SS down, just don´t remember such a bad vocal performance from Lee. Kinda growling through it. Honestly, I don´t think he would have made it into the Hollywood rounds with this performance, let alone top 24. To me, he´s so much better than that performance, so I won´t judge him from it

  11. This is strange…I absolutely hate the faster version of SS. It’s so annoying imo but I love the acoustic version and can’t stop listening to it.

Nope not strange. I’m also not a fan of the original version, but I kinda like this one .

  12. I love acoustic Lee. I like the radio version of Sweet Serendipity, but this acoustic version sounds like a different song, less peppy and more soulful. Must go listen again. And again.
If you don’t like this version, Eriko, just listen to the next time he sings it. Lee never sings anything the same way twice. He’s always improvising.

  13. Ooooh, I like the acoustic Sweet Serendipity! I like the studio version, too. I love Lee’s voice but understand that not everyone does, which is fine with me. We all like different things.

  14. I love this version of SS, Lee and piano always work for me. It’s still early days, so I know we’ll have 4534234 versions of SS eventually :D

  15. One of my favorite things about Lee is his ability to change his songs up. I never grow tired of his songs because of it. There are some versions I prefer more than others, but he sort of offers something for everyone…well, maybe not everyone! ;)

  16. X Factor 2010: Final 16 return this weekend to perform charity single

We will be welcoming back some old faces to this weekend’s X Factor live show.

The final sixteen acts who made it past bootcamp and onto the live shows last month, will all return to the ITV show for their first performance of this year’s Charity single.

The singers all recorded their version of David Bowie’s ‘Heroes’ earlier this month. The song, said to have been recorded in the week beginning 18 October 2010, will be released as a charity single in aid of Help for Heroes, a charity which supports injured servicemen and women. The video for the single was filmed on 2 November 2010. It is the third year in a row that finalists have released a charity record.

X Factor 2010: Olly Murs & Alicia Keys to perform on results show

  17. Love this acoustic take on SS, that signature Lee growl and rearrangement show a different side to the upbeat poppy sound of the single. It displays promise of morphing into something quite different, into something deeper and more introspective.

I’m with you. If I have to listen to a version, I hope it’s the radio one with all the production to cover his voice. He’s a nightmare singing live. Leno, Today Show and this acoustic are all awful. Someone give an award to his producer because he does sound better in the studio. But after S9 live, I don’t expect him to get better now.

  19. Gosh, acoustic Lee is so beautiful. I love the acoustic SS. BLU is outstanding. This is a great week for Lee fans :)

  20. Gran Torino is such a wonderful movie that was robbed by the Oscars

    .

I loved this movie so much. I have suggested it to so many people and they all end up loving it.

  21. ok, that cover art is just horrible. Just no..

    Yeah, it is pretty unfortunate.

  22. wow, acoustic slowed-down version of SS was just sweeet!! reminds me of his BD version. he just changes things up and keeps surprising (which actually isn’t a surprise, lol!) also, another awesome version of BLY, man, i am soo hooked on this song, love it! :)

This is strange…I absolutely hate the faster version of SS. It’s so annoying imo but I love the acoustic version and can’t stop listening to it.

guess, it says alot about lee’s voice. he can do fine just him singing with his guitar and a little accompaniment. he just hooks you.. and then you are hypnotized to press play again (and again) lol!

Cover Art For @DannyGokey Christmas Single

Gah. Danny’s a cutie, with a wonderful smile. Why do they insist on making him look like something you’d tell your young daughters to stay away from?

  24. SS was meant to be a catchy song. But Lee put his own spin on its acoustic version and pulled it off.
Loved loved his acoustic take on DI and BLY !

  25. HerbAINow
The revamped http://www.leedewyzeofficial.com/ just went online. Looking good @rcapromo @leedewyze

i love that they put his logo there.. LJD on top of the tree of life. kinda like marriage of lee’s past & present. i feel that this signifies that he really was heavily involved in this album (kinda like the stories on how hands on he was on his pre-AI albums up to the kind of packaging that they used for the cds and the artwork) :)

  26. Gah. Danny’s a cutie, with a wonderful smile. Why do they insist on making him look like something you’d tell your young daughters to stay away from?

Lol. I think a photo with Danny smiling would have been nice and Christmas-y. This one is ok, though not my favorite picture of Danny by any means.

But for a digital Christmas single, eh. I don’t think the cover really will have much effect on anything. It’s not like the cover of an album that will be stocked on storeshelves…

Wouldn’t be a bad picture if they would raise his head up, take that stupid scarf off and have him give a real smile. Oh I forgot, get rid of the background, it’s horrible.

  28. Wasn’t Lee’s music video supposed to premeir on his website tonight? Or did I remember that wrong?

  29. smeggingnuts

Yeah but I’m betting it’ll premiere at midnight — timed to the release of the CD

  30. Yeah but I’m betting it’ll premiere at midnight — timed to the release of the CD

    aww makes sense thanks

  31. Billboard asks, “Who is your Favorite Musician Of All Time?” 28 Stars Sound Off, including David Archuleta and Danny Oakey!

I saw that. Appeared to me the clips with Danny (Gokey, lol) and the other country artists were on the blue carpet at the CMT Awards.

  32. Why do they insist on making him look like something you’d tell your young daughters to stay away from?

Swarmy Danny…that has been my complaint with his style for a long time.

  33. Danny seems to be having fun and not fretting too much over that Christmas pic.

He just tweeted about writing songs at a writer’s retreat, and that it was a “very HISTORICAL day” for his non-profit foundation. I wonder if the charity news is related to the building that was donated to Danny’s foundation in Nashville for use as a homeless shelter.

  34. oh boy that is yeah unfortunate…wow

Yes, fans don’t like it either, lol. Danny is a casual, happy, boyish kind of guy, not a GQ, airbrushed guy with a ladies scarf and a stalkerish smile.

But I’m sure the song will be good. And fortunately, its a Christmas song so I won’t have to look at that pic for too long

Now, why can’t they use a pic from an awards show where he always looks good and even the blogs give him good grades for his attire?
Like his appearance on the Billboard favorite musician of all time (happy he was included):

    http://www.billboard.com/#/features/28-stars-favorite-musicians-of-all-time-1004126796.story?tag=hpflash1

  35. Now, why can’t they use a pic from an awards show where he always looks good and even the blogs give him good grades for his attire?

An awards show pic for Danny’s Christmas single cover?
Not sure on that one :) He has looked really cute though at his red carpet appearances for the various country award shows, and even going back to the AI finale in the dark suit.

  36. It’s so nice hearing about the honor Taylor Hicks received from Clint Eastwood. I am happy to see Taylor is still out there and doing what he loves!

  37. An awards show pic for Danny’s Christmas single cover?
    Not sure on that one

Steph, almost anything else, lol! That pic just looks nothing like him at all.

  38. I’m digging the acoustic SS much more than the recorded one. Lee’s strongest when he gets to be acoustic. This has so much more depth to it IMO. I love Lee, but I really don’t like the recorded version of SS, sorry.

The cover art for Danny’s single, eh. It’s not a bad picture of Danny (he doesn’t really take bad pictures lol), and I don’t think he has to be smiling all the time either. But it looks to me like an attempt was made to make Danny look urbane and sexy with a come-hither look, but is ruined by the cheap looking, skimpy scarf and heavy dark framed glasses that hide his lovely brown eyes and give him a bit of that creepy Constantine look. There are much better photos they could have used that are sexy without looking sleazy. As far as any airbrushing, I don’t think there is any. I have met Danny and his skin is really that perfect.

  39. LiveItUp is trending on twitter-it trended on yahoo earlier. Come on midnight-I want my album!

  40. Cover Art For @DannyGokey Christmas Single

One of the Danny fans posted this link early this morning in yesterday’s Danny thread. ;).

  41. Surprised this doesn’t happen more often :)

    KrisAllen
Someone said to me me after the show “I wanna have your babies!” Does that mean that it was a good show?

  42. CindyM
Smeggs, little boy Adam…omg, soooo cute!

Haha I am so excited. Little boy Adam singing and dancing and Zodiac Show ACIGC. Haha they did a great job with the promo :D

  43. Orla Fallon’s Celtic Christmas incl. her duet “Silent Night” with David Archuleta now also on iTunes

I’ll let you use a link from mjs. lol

Their voices sound really great together and its so soft.

  44. Poor Lee. I was checking to see how preorders would give the album a nice bump but I can’t find the new album on itunes AT ALL. Bad time to have a snafu.

  45. Tweet from Danny tonight–

At writers retreat & wrote some amazing songs w/some great writers. Also 2day was a very HISTORICAL day 4 Sophia’s Heart. What a great day!

Awww, he sounds so excited about writing. I’m glad he;s working with some great writers. Danny seems to know how to surround himself with people who can help him.

  46. Poor Lee indeed. There’s been practically no buzz about his album at all. No banner ads, nothing. Not a good sign.

  47. Lee’s album hasn’t been released yet, so why would it be showing up on iTunes?

  48. Poor Lee indeed. There’s been practically no buzz about his album at all. No banner ads, nothing. Not a good sign.

There just doesn’t seem to be a lot of retailer excitement about Lee’s album. I checked a few of the on-line places I buy CDs from last night and didn’t find anybody hyping LIU. In fact, Deep Discount still had the album title listed as “TBD.”

  49. Lee’s album is up on Amazon MP3 but not on iTunes yet.

    #27 Amazon CD
Unranked Amazon MP3 album (not on sale long enough)

I guess everyone is waiting for iTunes album.

ETA: Big winner for the week looks like it will be Jackie Evancho.

  50. right now the Glee Christmas album is #1 on iTunes

    #5 P!nk Greatest Hits
    #6 Jackie Evancho EP
    #7 Josh Groban
    #8 Rihanna

what’s interesting to me is that Chris Tomlin is at #9 — really high on chart for a Christian music artist.

  51. what’s interesting to me is that Chris Tomlin is at #9 — really high on chart for a Christian music artist.

Chris Tomlin is a surprise but also Rihanna is only #8 on iTunes! She’ll sell well on CD but I expected her to be higher on iTunes.

And at #2 — a rock album! A Day to Remember “What Separates Me from You” :)

  52. I’ve actually seen several rock albums near the top of the iTunes charts when they are first released in recent weeks

  53. If anyone’s going to be at The Grove in L.A. on Wednesday, Kris will be taping a segment for Extra! at 1 p.m.

I hope Kris gets a chance to perform AWM. A performance in that environment would be fun, but the odds of them doing something with Kris and the whole band are probably slim.

I guess everyone is waiting for iTunes album.

Or maybe people are just going to buy a physical copy, since that’s what most people do.

  54. Poor Lee. I was checking to see how preorders would give the album a nice bump but I can’t find the new album on itunes AT ALL. Bad time to have a snafu.

Anybody who wanted to buy the album at midnight will still want to buy it when it is available at a reasonable hour. Honestly, anyone who was waiting to buy it at midnight has probably already ordered a copy, and was probably planning of going to pick up a physical copy from a brick and mortar store.

  55. Anybody who wanted to buy the album at midnight will still want to buy it when it is available at a reasonable hour. Honestly, anyone who was waiting to buy it at midnight has probably already ordered a copy, and was probably planning of going to pick up a physical copy from a brick and mortar store.

Mais oui. But it’s still sucks when everyone else’s album is immediately available at midnight on the day of release and yours isn’t.

Lee’s fans took the time to get his album title trending on twitter, to raise some free awareness and get a few new or clueless people to check out the album. It’s a drag that those folks couldn’t check the number 1 digital music retailer straightaways.

And it’s fun, in an obsessive way, to chart the performance of your favorites from the moment of release.

This just wasn’t an auspicious beginning. Un-serendipitous, you might say. ;)

  56. I hope Kris gets a chance to perform AWM. A performance in that environment would be fun, but the odds of them doing something with Kris and the whole band are probably slim.

Why wouldn’t he perform his newest single? The article did say there will be performances on The Grove Stage. If not with the full band, it would be with Cale. So he will sing AWM either with the full band or just acoustically with Cale.

  57. what’s interesting to me is that Chris Tomlin is at #9 — really high on chart for a Christian music artist.

That is great for Chris. He is a great songwriter -love his tunes.
