Simon Cowell-less ‘Idol’ holds not-so-secret auditions in San Francisco

“Replace Cowell?” said Ken Warwick, one of the show’s executive producers, on Wednesday. “You can’t do that.

“People always ask us ‘Who is going to fill that (Cowell’s) role?’ What I think happened was when Randy (Jackson), Steven (Tyler) and Jennifer (Lopez) were introduced to America, every other question was that. But we never said that. We weren’t replacing Cowell, we were just looking at it as these are the people in place. It’s a different game with these people. So, let’s go with the chemistry among them.

McPhee: J.Lo Will Be ‘Cutthroat!”

In an exclusive interview with TooFab, the season five runner-up says, “Someone’s got to fill his shoes. I have a feeling J.Lo is going to be cutthroat, that’s a feeling!”

And McPhee adds, “I think it’s a big get to get Jennifer Lopez, she’s like an international star, so I think it’s very cool that she’s doing the show.”

Of the entire judges panel, also consisting of newcomer Steven Tyler and vet Randy Jackson, McPhee tells TooFab, “I think that they’re all great. It’ll be interesting to see how they all work together. One’s like rock [Tyler], and one’s like total pop [Lopez], and then there’s Randy. So I think it’ll probably work, but I said the same thing about [last seaon’s judge] Ellen [DeGeneres], and I was so excited about Ellen.”

Exclusive: Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony at Latin Grammys

Being the only female on “Idol, ” all fingers automatically point to J.Lo to have the biggest wardrobe, but when asked who actually does, her or fellow judge Steven Tyler, she replied, “Ryan.”

Enjoying her new seat at the judges’ table, Lopez said, “It’s so much fun, we’re having a ball. I thought it was going to be fun, but it’s more than that. I think it’s gonna be probably one of the best years they ever had.”

  1. KPRi is a Triple A station, which is cool, but that Holiday concert isn’t pairing Crystal with anyone current. I hope there are some more current artists who will be on the bill

  2. Oh yeah….I have always thought the Doobie Brothers sucked and should all be shot. That Crystal has the nerve to be on a show with legends is a crime! :)

  3. Oh yeah….I have always thought the Doobie Brothers sucked and should all be shot.

thos thar rr fightin words MrDuffin. LOL

See, even I would go see Crystal if the Doobie Brothers were part of the package.

  4. Dude, my point is that they aren’t current. Most jingle balls have current acts on the bill. There’s nothing wrong with Crystal playing on the same bill with the Doobie Brothers — it just was strange to me. And personally, I think it would be better for Crystal to play with artists who are actually more current. She’s already been labeled by some as too old-fashioned. But that’s my own opinion – YMMV. I wasn’t insulting anyone, ok?

  5. Danny at his headlining show tonight in Jacksonville. Seems to be nice crowd, and lots of them helpfully tweeting video and pics, lol

Thought I’d stop by Jacksonville & catch @dannygokey in concert! This guys rockin it on stage! http://twitvid.com/ODUMZ

Hoping to see enough media coming out of this one to do a concert thread later on. Pretty good chances based on who I know is attending :)

I think the important thing is that Crystal is being promoted to a format that would be more willing to play her music, than CHR or even HAC stations would be. There have been quite a few idol alums who would have fit into the AAA format, but I don’t think they’ve been promoted to those stations, and the stations haven’t been interested in paying attention to them.

And, truth be told, Crystal’s main target audience is older, and would include people who are open to listening to the acts who she will be performing with.

  7. It’ll be interesting to see if AAA stations actually do play Crystal. To this point, very few of them have given many spins to ex-Idols. Now how hard the labels pushed various songs to that format, who knows? It would be cool if Crystal could get some steady radio play on that format — not only for her own sake, but because it might lead to the labels pushing some of the other Idols’ stuff to AAA as well.

    Dudette….I understand now. I guess my :) wasn’t enough of a hint.

  9. Danny at his headlining show tonight in Jacksonville.

While there’s been a ton of interviews coming out of CMA week with Danny, I’m sure he’s happy to be back up on stage.

  10. That would be great for Crystal if AAA stations would play her music. Maybe Jive is actually trying something different this time. Since her album is mainly original songs she’d already written, that haven’t been revised by cowriters to fit what Pop and HAC currently play, AAA would seem to be the best fit. That would certainly be breaking new ground for an Idol.

Just saw an excited tweet from Mike DeWyze. He and Lee are backstage at the Dave Matthews concert.

  11. Well, Lee tweeted he was going to DMB tonight, but well, typical Lee understatement …

Its AAA! Its like the AC of rock. Heh. But that said…

YAY!!! **Does happy dance** That is so where she belongs, I hope this is a sign they will push her there and that it WON’T be Hold On pitched to that format. Her audience is highly likely to skew older anyway, so it fits IMO.

I would pimp the hell out of her on VH1, have her do a lot of acoustic radio performances, and try to get her as much press in “cred” media as I could. Not that I know what I’m talking about. Heh.

  14. Is Lee going to tour with DMB? or is he talking about touring in general ?

  15. Danny at his headlining show tonight in Jacksonville.

I heard it was only 45 in Jacksonville today. Cold! Must be, Danny’s wearing a long sleeved shirt.

But 45 is better than my 25 here =(

  16. It would be interesting to see if they are going with a non mainstream launch for Crystal. My theory on the reason why Idols don’t get played on rock radio formats is because they are all niche and non mainstream. Idols are always launched mainstream off of their name/brand recognition and they can’t fall back into niche once that bell is rung. But with Crystal until they launch her I guess they can possibly position her another way. There are pros and cons, I bet she gives up a lot of mainstream promo and opportunities doing it that way but ultimately if she is best suited to that type of positioning it could work out for her. Makes sense why there is no news about her single drop or album launch, because this is not going to be a mainstream roll out.

  17. lili_anne7 Lee has recently said he hopes to start early next year, so I’m assuming touring in general, though one can always hope!

  18. “Watching danny gokey, sort of makes me miss Jump, Little Children..”

    Tweet from someone at Jacksonville.

That is not an act I am familiar with , LOL!

  19. Danny’s wearing a long sleeved shirt.

Indigobunting, you made me laugh! Danny is one hot blooded guy when he performs. Most of us would be loading on the layers of clothing if its 45 degrees…. Danny decided to wear long sleeves instead of a T-shirt to perform!

  20. Danny decided to wear long sleeves instead of a T-shirt to perform!

Lol. But he still rolled them up ;)

DMB only has tour dates scheduled through the end of 2010. They have already announced they will not be touring in 2011.

Lee is just enjoying some of the perks for being associated with a major label and/or 19E.

    Here is a list of rumored tours for 2011;

  22. Songwriter Toby Gad tweeted this photo with Alex Lambert. Hm.

Good to have it confirmed that 19 is still investing in Alex. He’s writing and recording with many of the same people Idol winners and runner-ups do. If only we could have a proper label/record deal announcement! What are they waiting for?

  23. I would think Lee’s just talking about touring in general. I can’t see DMB touring with anyone from AI, to be honest. Besides I heard that Dave Matthews is taking the next year off to spend time with his family

ETA – I also wonder when Lee will start touring. Except for Kris’ brief trip to Asia and some one-offs for both of them, neither Kris nor Adam really started touring until this summer — so it may be awhile before Lee has a real tour set up

  24. Danny’s legs are about a mile long. I think he’s been taking beautiful pills. In a year and a half he went from schlubby (but cute) to drop dead gorgeous. His body, skin and hair are perfect, and he dresses very well too. Love those chains he always wears and the tight jeans.
Celebrity suits him. Ooh la la! Pass the ice cubes.

  25. Yep definitely a nice perk of being on the same label as DMB :) so happy for him!
    http://twitpic.com/36d30o
He said Dave gave him some of the best advice he ever received.

I hope they set up touring early for him. The David’s had their solo tours start very early so its not always a matter of waiting months. I suspect with Lee he’ll either open or play very small clubs.

  26. Lee’s CD is on sale on Amazon.com for $7.99. I do not recall them doing this for an Idol winner’s presale before. This means that every Amazon pre-order for LIU will be discounted to $7.99.

It also puts the Amazon price $2 lower than the iTunes digital album which is $9.99.

    Pre-Order Price Guarantee

Amazon.com’s price for not-yet-released items sometimes changes between the time the item is listed for sale and the time it is released and shipped. Whenever you pre-order a book, CD, video, DVD, video game, or software item, the price we charge when we ship it to you will be the lowest price offered by Amazon.com between the time you place your order and the release date. The order summary in Your Account will reflect the lowest price within 24 hours of the price change.

  27. If Jive has decided to market Crystal as a folk-rock AAA artist, it is really a niche market. I think they need to go for a broader market — maybe AC/HAC.

Share of radio audience by formant and age

Alternative (AAA. Alternative, New Rock)listener demographics…

    12-17 5.2%
    18-24 6.3%

    45-54 2.8%

    45-54 16.0%
    55-64 15.8%

  28. Eh, just because Crystal is being pushed to AAA radio doesn’t mean that AAA radio will be receptive. It’s a very hard format to get established on, and it can be unpredictable. (Since it is the AC of rock it also can move like molasses). They also typically are not kind to Idol alumni – and even this radio station is still notating Idol as Crystal’s primary source of fame.

The odds are very much against this working for her. And I suspect Jive’s patience is not limitless in these matters.

  29. I do not think that Jive will push Crystal just to AAA stations — but that must be a part of the game plan. Why else have her do a promo concert at an independently owned AAA station in San Diego? But I have to believe that HAC/AC is a big part of the plan. Jive relies so heavily on radio, I can’t imagine they will move away from it completely.

I think they have a real opportunity to market Crystal to older alt. rock buyers — but my take of that market is they are not Idol fans and so Jive will need to establish Crystal’s credibility as a singer-songwriter. Thankfully she did not win Idol so it may be easier for her to transition.

  30. I do not think that Jive will push Crystal just to AAA stations — but that must be a part of the game plan. Probably right. I just can’t see Jive exerting the effort to push Crystal on AAA. Not that it wouldn’t be good for her, etc. , but that they haven’t been known for taking the hard road lately.
