Nigel Lythgoe on new ‘American Idol’ judges: No softies on the panel!

“I don’t think there are any softies on this panel, but if you legitimately wow them, they will tell you. They are still in the studio and working currently. They are still making albums and they really know the current business and what people are looking for, so that makes them great judges and sources of information and advice for these young people just starting out or those going down the wrong career path as it were.”

Today is the last day of auditions until Hollywood week, says Fox. The road auditions officially wrap tonight.

Lee DeWyze Talks About His New Album, His Songwriting and Winning American Idol

DeWyze’s love for great singer/songwriters began on Sundays during his childhood when his dad, a postal carrier, would play classic albums for him and his three siblings. He loved everything from Grand Funk Railroad and Kris Kristofferson to Simon & Garfunkel and the Mamas & The Papas, and his passion for Cat Stevens is tattooed on his arm via lyrics to “Father and Son”–that song is a centerpiece on DeWyze’s favorite album, Stevens’ Tea for the Tillerman. When he was 14, DeWyze found his dad’s old guitar in the closet and begged for him to get it re-strung. He learned to play chords on his own using a book of Beatles songs his dad gave him; at one point, he even made up new words to “Yellow Submarine”!

Cheryl gets pie in face for charity

X Factor judge Cheryl Cole graciously accepted a custard pie in the face as royalty and fellow stars honoured some of the nation’s unsung heroes.

The pop star volunteered for the treatment from schoolboy Cameron Small, who won Young Fund Raiser of the Year gong at the Pride of Britain awards on Monday night.

The 12-year-old said he was “shocked” to be embarrassing the singer, adding: “I threw it hard and it hit her right in the face. Then she put some of it on me.”

But Cole – who drew criticism for refusing to send home an X Factor contestant at the weekend – said: “It was a small thing to do for such a brave young man.”

Simon Cowell’s 6th ‘X Factor’ Scandal In UK

Fox brass are getting more and more nervous about the way Simon Cowell is conducting this controversial but lucrative 7th series of The X Factor in the UK before the show comes to the U.S. in Fall 2011. Viewers are ringing up ITV and TV regulator Ofcom complaining that Sunday’s vote show was rigged. They’re mad because Treyc Cohen, 28, was booted off The X Factor after a sing-off with tabloid favourite Katie Waissel, whose panic attacks and other escapades make for better ratings than Cohen’s serviceable voice but dull presence.

How producers rigged X Factor voting shambles: Dermot was ordered to take majority verdict after Cheryl refused to vote

Millions watched as Miss Cole dithered over whether to plump for Treyc Cohen or Katie Waissel.

Yesterday, however, O’Leary revealed how Miss Cole’s apparently agonising decision had actually been decided by show bosses during the commercial break – as more cynical viewers perhaps might have suspected all along.

‘We thought it might happen before the break when we found out who was in the bottom two, ’ he said.

‘We decided if she wasn’t going to vote, we would go to the majority verdict.’

Backstage at DWTS: Bristol Palin Reveals Secret to Making It This Far

Kurt Warner Thinks It’s “Unfair” He Was Voted Off ABC’s DWTS

Kurt Warner tells UsMagazine.com his Dancing With the Stars days shouldn’t be over.

After he was eliminated on Tuesday’s show, he sarcastically told Us backstage, “Gosh it was unfair! I mean, I think we all feel, in some way, it is unfair when we get voted off. I think we felt for a long time that we should have gotten better scores than we did, so you’re disappointed. We’re all biased.”

  1. David Cook & Ruben Studdard are wonderful men. And Mindy Doolittle is a terrific woman. We need more of those kind of people in the world. That’s all I have to say.

  2. I just saw a promo for the CMAs tonight during GMA and they mentioned Kelly’s appearance.

I’ve been turned off X-factor for a while now. It’s very manipulative and Simon has no scruples when it comes to making dough.

I’m liking the character of Shannon Beiste more and more, and Dot-Marie Jones gave a sensitive, moving performance last night.

People may relate to Bristol, but she’s a horrible dancer and should have gone weeks ago. I think that Brandy and Jennifer are the best dancers, but Kyle is close behind and very charming and entertaining.

  3. Awesome, joyed!

Where did Alex record that song? In a tin can? Blech.

  4. I love Melinda. She sounds fabulous as always. That was fun seeing her dance with the people there.

  5. I love this:

The kids were the best part, they were having so much fun. And David, Melinda & Ruben were so wonderful with them.

‘American Idol’ has given country music some of its biggest — and most promising — stars, including Carrie Underwood, Kellie Pickler, Bucky Covington and Kris Allen.

Isn’t there a country singer named Kris Allen? Lol. I wonder if the writer knows that there are two Kris Allens out there.

  8. I kind of like Alex’s song. I think this direction is a good one for him.

  9. cookcricket: Isn’t there a country singer named Kris Allen? Lol.

There might be but he hasn’t been on the scene in a really long time. I don’t think that’s why the writer got confused. I think she was trying to remember the s8 guy who went country and landed on the guy who Keith Urban’s gushed about in interviews.

  10. Oh that’s funny. I think there is a country singer named Kris Allen.

I imagine this is the first time anyone has ever confused Kris Allen with Danny Gokey. :)

  13. Kris was up early this morning, headed to NYC to tape his appearance on that Alheimer’s telethon. It looks like (at least) Cale is going with him, since he tweeted back at Kris earlier today.

ETA: That’s a funny boo-boo in that article. I think she confused Kris with Danny, probably because Kris toured with Keith Urban. But there is a Kris Allen who does country music — “Kris Allen & the Southern Thunder” is the name of his band

  14. That is such a funny error since Kris was so def about not doing country music right after Idol.

There are two country singers named Kris/Chris Allen who are touring…

Chris Allen is a country singer from Texas http://www.myspace.com/chrisallenlive Active but only known regionally in Texas and the mid-South I think.

And the more famous Kris Allen and Southern Thunder Country/Christian artist that usually gets confused with the “real” Kris Allen — because he owns the URL http://www.krisallen.com/

  15. That’s a funny boo-boo in that article. I think she confused Kris with Danny, probably because Kris toured with Keith Urban. But there is a Kris Allen who does country music — “Kris Allen & the Southern Thunder” is the name of his band

LOL! The “other” KA is quite dashing!

ETA: Ooops, Q3 beat me to it!

  16. I really enjoyed the interview with Camilia! It is so great to hear perspective from a band mates view! I loved how she described Adam :)

  17. What a great interview with Camila. I think that’s the first time I have heard her talk.

  18. Totally off topic but a fun little tidbit and she did write a song sung by an Idol.

P!nk is pregnant. How fun…based on her personality it seems like she will be a gas as a Mom.

    now…back to regular scheduled programming.

  19. Here is a pic of Casey with the host of Fox 17’s “Tennessee Mornings”. It looks like Casey is dressed up some.

Hangin’ w/American Idol finalist Casey James. GREAT GUY! http://twitpic.com/35mmev

  20. Regarding the X Factor conroversy, host Dermot explained:
    http://www.unrealitytv.co.uk/x-factor/x-factor-dermot-oleary-was-banned-from-going-to-deadlock-with-treyc-cohen/

In a situation when one mentor has two contestants in the sing off, the other three judges usually vote first – like it happened this year with Diva Fever and Belle Amie (Simon didn’t have to vote, because it was 3-0).

Judges don’t want to vote against the contestants they mentor, because they are loyal to their acts until the end. In the first couple of seasons in happened two or three times that mentor voted against his own act, but that was years ago.
Cheryl’s decision not to vote was logical: she didn’t want to vote against her own act, plus it would be quite weird if she had to continue mentoring the act she herself voted against.

The only controversy could be the order the judges voted – Cheryl should be allowed to vote last and send the vote to deadlock.

  21. Camila Grey (Adam’s keyboardist) was interviewed in Finland. She discusses Adam, the audition process, and her band UhHuhHer.

I love some of UhHuhHer’s songs so I was glad to hear Adam mention recently that he is going to write with Cam for his new album. Hope something good comes from that.

  22. Princess Reprise on Rock Band? What? Seriously? That’s exciting! :)

  23. Lee’s songs sound AMAZING. All five of those AOL added are the ones that stood out the most to me from the snippets, and I was not disappointed upon hearing the full version. One question – Why was “Me & My Jealousy” not the first single?!! It should totally be the second now! All of these are just awesome though…everything I could want from Lee!! Can’t wait for the album to be delivered :)

  24. Love the Camilla interview. UhHuhHer is fantastic. I didn’t know she and Adam planned on writing together so hurray for that!

  25. Here is a pic of Casey with the host of Fox 17’s “Tennessee Mornings”. It looks like Casey is dressed up some.

Nice pic! Wonder if that will be his outfit for the CMAs.

  26. It was in last night headline thread but new info on Taylor’s Facebook about the song he will sing..

Taylor Hicks will perform at the Museum of Tolerance’s gala honoring actor/director Clint Eastwood on November 14, 2010, in Los Angeles. During the ceremony, Taylor will perform the song “Gran Torino” which was written for Clint Eastwood’s film of the same name. Visit TaylorHicks.com for more information!

ETA: Taylor just tweeted about this..

Truly honored to be asked by Clint Eastwood to sing Gran Torino this weekend. Really cool. Hope everyone has a great hump day…..

That’s just too cool. Congrats to Taylor.

  29. Maybe we will get an early preview from the Alzheimer’s telethon taping.

    Bigdaddysays
Getting ready to head to a telethon. There is a slight chance that @theellenshow will be there… This could be my chance! #bigdaddyonellen

  30. That is so cool about Taylor Hicks singing an Eastwood song for Clint Eastwood! good for him!

  31. Anybody else get as much of a kick out of this as I did?

    The Boot

‘American Idol’ has given country music some of its biggest — and most promising — stars, including Carrie Underwood, Kellie Pickler, Bucky Covington and Kris Allen.

Their confusion may be because The Boot had done an article on Kris when he was touring with Keith Urban and Keith also had a lot of nice things about Kris on his own site.

  32. hoosiermama, you made me start looking up stuff on that Southern Thunder dude again. Sorry, don’t mean to sound mean, but his website kinda cracks me up. For starters, when the page loads, you hear thunder. And his bio (“About Kris” section) sounds like it was totally self-penned or at least penned by his mom. Finally, it’s just my opinion, but if I were him I would delete this:

He is especially fond of working with children . . . .

Now, where is that NBC Kris Allen (4Real) footage from today?! *waves to Twig*

  33. I heard 3 of Lee’s songs on AOL Radio, and they were fantastic! Even better than I was hoping for. Brooklyn Bridge was my favorite. Someone mentioned they could hear this in a movie soundtrack, and I totally agree. Love it! Also loved Me and My Jealousy. This is gonna be a great album.

  34. Love UhHuhHer’s songs! “Dreamer” is one of my fav. First time I heard of it was from Smallville and was surprised to learn it was Cam’s! I, too would like an Adam & Cam co-written song/s but Cam’s is more electropop and Adam’s next album, accdg to him would be along the vein of WWFM & IIHY. So I guess, I can only dream :(

By the way, I am happy to hear that you are back at work.
Hoping you are improving and doing okay now. ;)

Lol. That writer seems to have been churning out a lot of articles in recent days. Maybe she is minding the store and getting sloppy while other writers are out covering CMA Week…

Don’t believe it’s anything more than a mix-up. Doesn’t strike me as either a diss on Danny or a suggestion about a new career direction for Kris :) She actually had an article last month referring to Danny as one of “Nashville’s rising stars.”

Maybe she got confused with the Keith Urban connections for both Kris and Danny, or was thinking to Kris performing with Keith on the AI8 finale. The alter Kris Allens could be a possibility, but that would just multiply her degree of confusion.

I suppose she should just totally go for it and claim Josh Turner if she wants to really get her names mixed up in attributing an AI guy as one of country’s “biggest stars” ;)

  37. I wonder if all the folks performing at the Grammy event will also turn out to be nominees.

  38. Princess (reprise) on rockgamer is so cool. Had a good laugh at the graphic on the lead singer. That is so way out not Lee.

Love the article on songwriter universe. Lee is mature and has the right attitude towards his music and life. My kind of idol.
