Interview: Catching Up With Lee DeWyze

How many songs did you initially start with before narrowing it down to the 11 that are on Live It Up?

We had quite a few. There are definitely going to be some songs that are offered out there separately from the album. I’m really, really proud of what I have done. All the ones that didn’t make the album, it’s not that they weren’t good songs, it was just that we knew the right songs to go on this first album. I’m happy with the single, I’m happy with title of the album, I’m happy with the whole thing.

Very awesome, you sound really excited. How did you decide on what to title the album, and were there any other possible titles for the album that you had in mind?

I ran a couple different titles through my head, you know Live It Up is definitely kind of the theme of the album. I felt that each one of these songs really had a little meaning [tying to the album title]. It’s a cool little album. I love it. It speaks a lot about me, everything in life, relationships, love, a loss, you know different things that everyone goes through in their life.

ROBIN ROBERTS GETS HER COUNTRY ON TONIGHT

“Oh my gosh, I’m tellin’ you, Brad Paisley is a big jokester. Kellie Pickler cannot stop talking. It’s hard to get a word in edgewise and she’s got these great jokes.

“Carrie [Underwood] is one of those who always catches you off guard because she’s just so sweet and she’s beautiful and very soulful. She doesn’t like a lot of fuss around her. When you’re around her you absolutely feel good.”

The third time could be a charm for Brad Paisley at CMA Awards

And Paisley is going again with newlywed Underwood in a professional partnership he clearly enjoys.

“We just are great friends, ” he says. “We’ve been pretty close ever since we toured together. I think that was the first tour she went out on. She’s a great person and a great collaborator. You’re not dealing with a diva in any way, and she contributes a lot. Some of the best ideas for the show last year were hers.”

On the ‘DWTS’ Scene: Rick Fox and Cheryl Burke on Their Surprise Elimination

After Palin and Ballas were called safe, Schwimmer assumed that she and Massey would be exiting. “I looked over and saw Rick and Cheryl and said [to Kyle], ‘we’re going home, ‘” Schwimmer said. “What sucked is that we lost our best friends. When they left I started crying. How sucky is it that they have to go, but how awesome that we get to stay. It was awful, though. I hate being in that position.”

Glee: Gwyneth Paltrow Sings ‘F–k You’…to Who?

Sources confirm that Gwyneth Paltrow will be singing a version of Ce-Lo’s “F–k You” also known as “Forget You” on an upcoming episode of Glee, and here’s what else we know:

Though no details are out yet on exactly who she’s singing to, we do know that Gwyneth will fire up something of a love rectangle/rhombus/square (take your four-sided pick) when she makes her Glee debut on Nov. 16.

“Gwyneth is coming on the show, ” Ryan Murphy told us. “And even though Emma (Jayma) is with John Stamos’ character, when she sees those two it makes her feel jealous. And that sort of launches another big, wrenching love triangle. Gwyneth will come between them, so it’s a quadrangle.”

  1. I can’t wait for the E THS on Adam. His father and brother crack me up. :-)

And boo that Q102 concert is on a Wednesday. :-(

  2. Q102 is great but not much of a surprise because the silhouette was clearly Adam, it as on two ticket sites for weeks and Adam said he would be there in September.

If they are going to reveal these as secrets — they should do a better job disguising the images! Fans even matched the exact photo!

I can’t wait for the E THS on Adam. His father and brother crack me up. :-)

Yeah, I laughed out loud at their comments as well.
Knowing Adam, nothing will be spared. We will hear it all, regardless of whether we want to or not….. Ha! ;)

  4. I think I am still going to have to pull the kids out of school and take a roadtrip.

It would be a two day road trip for me. Z100 would have been much better. I think I’ll have to youtube this one.

  5. There is no way in hell I will be able to fight off the Beliebers for tickets on Friday, let alone the usual Adam fans that go to every. single. concert. and manage to find the best tickets.

I am doomed. DOOMED I tell ya.

lorismile- normally I wouldn’t do a roadtrip but hubby and son happen to be contractors working in that area this year, so it’s really worth it for me and my daughters to go :)

Oh, and I cannot wait to hear what Adam’s dad and brother have to say- they have such a wicked sense of humor!

  6. Paige Miles is the perfect example of what I am always talking about. People in the idol bubble obsess over success, and claim that all those who aren’t major label monster smashes are ruined. That just isn’t true. Even just making the Top 12 gives you local opportunities that you would never have had without the show. Get enough screen time on idol and you can make a living on music and appearances the rest of your life.

  7. “jeff kazee tweets
saw the incredibly talented-and newly married-Crystal Bowersox @ studio today-record sounds awesome!”

I don´t know how much cred Jeff Kazes has, but he sure seems pleased. Don´t think he´d express himself this way for some over-produced formula music. Of course, since he plays keys on some of the songs, he´ll be biased

  8. oh Adam, hasn’t anyone told you the first time pretty much sucks for everyone? LOL. Looking forward to the interview with the Zodiac folks as well. I wonder if they got Brad for an interview. Evil infant! Love Eber.

    WWFM went Gold in Switzerland

  9. I don´t know how much cred Jeff Kazes has, but he sure seems pleased. Don´t think he´d express himself this way for some over-produced formula music. Of course, since he plays keys on some of the songs, he´ll be biased

I don’t know who this is. Is he in her band?

  10. Lambert still fascinates.

I don´t know how much cred Jeff Kazes has, but he sure seems pleased.

Don’t have a clue who this guy is.

  11. I don’t know who this is. Is he in her band?

Don´t think he´s in her band, but played keys on some of Crystals recording. Crystal spent some days with him early on, so I thought he´d produce her album, until David Bendeth announced he was the producer of all her songs.

Jeff Kazee is a Musician. Pianist, Singer, Songwriter, Arranger & Producer based in NYC. Member of Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes. Performs with kazeedigs, Jon Bon Jovi, Early Elton, Bon Jovi & more.

  12. I wonder if they got Brad for an interview.

I wondered that too. I guess we will find out.

  13. Adam has some exciting things coming up when he returns to the states. The Q102 Jingle Ball has a great line up. Adam, Script, Bruno and Train just by themselves is great. Not a of fan of Beiber and Selena, but the kids will love them. I wish I was close by because I would go to see this show.

I have to say, I love Adam’s dad, he’s hilarious. Eber and Leila did a great job raising their sons.

  14. I loved the interview with Lee. He sounds so excited and the way he describes the album makes it sound like it’s really going to be something I will love even more than I anticipated. This is exciting time for fans of Lee, yet it’s like holding your breath as you crest the top of the roller coaster, knowing you’re in for a cool ride, ups and downs and all, yet totally thrilling cause it’s what you stood in line for. Live It Up Nov 16th!

  15. That’s a good article about Lee’s album. I’m really looking forward to hearing some of those new melodies; I love his indie albums-they are full of emotional songs with lovely melodies and though the new album will have more pop influences and have co-writers involved, he seems to be really happy about how it turned out.
The audio on that short video is very hard to hear, but I think he’s saying nice things about his fans-like he does everytime he tweets. :)

I can’t wait to see Adam on E THS. Lots of Idol goodness this month. Now if I could hear something besides sports updates from DC, my happiness would be complete.

  16. leecherry For those of you that have been asking..yes, those Halloween pics were meant for private sharing on Facebook and they somehow got jacked.

Kinda sucks, but put photos out there and someone will get them.

  17. Lee’s interview was great!! Im even more excited for the album after what he said about the songs!! Is it the 16th yet? :)

  18. …yet it’s like holding your breath as you crest the top of the roller coaster, knowing you’re in for a cool ride, ups and downs and all, yet totally thrilling cause it’s what you stood in line for…

I think that is an awesome way of describing what all of us feel for our favs! I like it!

  19. In Lee’s own words, in response to question:

How would you sum up the last few months of the life and the process you’ve been going through?

If I could use a word to sum it up, I would say it’s very unpredictable. You never know what’s next, you just got to roll with everything that you got. You never know what to expect.

I don’t like to have really any expectations for myself. I have goals that I want to reach, but you can never plan what’s going to happen next. All you can do is try to make the right decisions musically and career-wise and hope for the best. I’ve got good people around me, I’ve got goals in mind and things I want to accomplish. Hopefully, I’ll be able to do that.

  20. Nice to see the ACM recognising Danny and Carrie for what they give back.

  21. t’s like holding your breath as you crest the top of the roller coaster, knowing you’re in for a cool ride, ups and downs and all, yet totally thrilling cause it’s what you stood in line for…

Welcome to the Idol coaster, buckle your seatbelt, it’s a bumpy ride :)

  22. gangreen I hear ya and I agree.

aprilfoolish very well said about the rollercoaster and all. Lee is level headed and is keeping it real.

Lee’s audio is translated in the comments section of that article at BlogCritics.

  23. Pre-order the upcoming Crystal Bowersox album at AmericanIdol.com for 12.99 and get an instant download of “Up to the Mountain”.

That’s odd. Crystal released a studio recording of UTTM during AI. Is this the same or a different recording on her album, and why aren’t they offering a download of a new song?

  24. Nice to see the ACM recognising Danny and Carrie for what they give back.

That is nice, and the grant they gave SHF recently also.

Remember that the ACM location in California was one of the very first places Danny went when he started his radio tour last November. Awww.

  25. I wonder what David is going to do in the Philippines. There has been no advance notice of him going. The fans there are definitely going to have to scramble to see him depending on what he is doing there.

  26. LOL at those quotes..hahaha that episode is going to be hilarious

  27. Why is David Archuleta going to the Philippines? Considering how anemic his album and singles sales are here in the States, maybe he needs to concentrate on the US. JIVE has released three of his singles and none yet has made any impact on the charts or itunes. I understand he has fans overseas, but right now he needs to be making appearances here so fans and non fans will know he has a new album out. If he wanted to go outside the US, maybe he should have went to Canada, because they are very receptive to Idol singers.

  28. LOL at those quotes..hahaha that episode is going to be hilarious

I’m hoping for more from his dad and brother. :-) I can’t imagine Adam ever getting too big for his britches with them two around.

  29. I’m hoping for more from his dad and brother. I can’t imagine Adam ever getting too big for his britches with them two around.

haha yeah and if you remember that Zodiac Show trailer where Lee Cherry had to deal with the “flaming headdress” issue. I am soooo hoping for more stories like that :D

  30. Danny is doing the Coastal Fair tonight, sounds like someone had a good time.

tweets from a Adam fan who took her son tonight:

aww… danny gokey was such a sweetheart! Looked hot…skinny w/ muscular armsss!

Danny was hotttt tho I’m tellin ya…even hubby thought so…lmao

  31. This is another person tweeting from Danny’s show, sweet

My daughter just met Danny Gokey…she’s so thrilled!

    At the fair…she’s in love.

More from the Adam fan, aww. Love the line about calling for the glambulance.

@dannygokey Nice pyrotechnics!! Great show! Xoxo http://yfrog.com/20287ibj

  32. lol at the comments by the Adam fan about Danny. I really liked one of the pictures she posted of Danny (2nd one posted). I am glad to see that people enjoyed Danny’s concert today. :)

If you can figure out what the label and management strategies are here, please do share. For many, it’s a mystery. Jive has not promoted the second and third “singles.”

David is apparently very popular in some of the Asian countries.

David did a free radio show in a Fresno, CA mall tonight and, by all accounts, he attracted a large and energetic crowd (see separate MJ thread). He also gave out autographs. However, no CDs for sale there. Go figure.

  34. Why is David Archuleta going to the Philippines?

From what I understand American Idol is VERY popular in the Philippines. Even Allison did a short tour their.

  35. From what I understand American Idol is VERY popular in the Philippines. Even Allison did a short tour their.

I think all of the AI8 top four made it there except Danny, so far? He also has a fair number of fans in that part of the world, so perhaps some day…

Tons of tweets from Indonesian AI fans and others in that region when @agnezmo starting tweeting about meeting up with Danny for the AMA red carpet show.

  36. Nice to see the ACM recognising Danny and Carrie for what they give back.

I think it’s one reason Danny is so happy in Country music; he has a chance to be personally involved in Charity, which is what he’s said he’d like to do if he didn’t have a music career- run non profits. Nice videos of Danny and Carrie.

lol at the comments by the Adam fan about Danny

Yeah, they were pretty cute. Pretty brave person; she took some grief from her Twitter followers for taking her 13 yr. old son to see Danny (and changing her gravatar for a day in honor of the occasion, lol)
    Her last tweet:

DG was at fair in Charleston, was never a fan (son is) but he put on a heck of a show, improved a lot as entertainer!

  37. @dannygokey Show was so AMAZING! You put a smile on everyones face there! Saw ya’ll walking around the fair, did you get on any rides?

Sounds like Danny and possibly some band members (“ya’ll” ?) were able to roam around the fair a little. That’s nice, I haven’t heard too many reports of that for Danny, usually he’s tucked away on the bus or in controlled areas doing media or m&g’s.

  38. smeggingnuts: From what I understand American Idol is VERY popular in the Philippines. Even Allison did a short tour their.

The two Davids did a huge joint concert there. Crowd estimated at 75,000-100,000 total (someone please correct my numbers if those aren’t just right). Amazing.

  39. The Adam fan that tweeted about Danny tonight is so sweet to take her son when she wasn’t a fan herself….what a great mom!

From the sound of the tweets it seems Danny may have won her over too…not surprised as he puts on an amazing live show!

  40. I just read that Rascal Flatts will be at the Opry the same evening as Danny in December. I bet he will be thrilled about that.

He has been able to meet them before, but never performed at the same event to my knowledge. Huge, huge fan of theirs.

  41. The two Davids did a HUGE joint concert there. Total crowd estimated at 75,000-100,000 total (someone please correct my numbers if those aren’t just right). Amazing.

There were a lot of different numbers in the press for the two David’s concerts — most reliable number I can find is a press report of around 50,000 people but the promoter did not release numbers.

But it was a huge event and Idol is popular in the Philippines.

I think it’s one reason Danny is so happy in Country music; he has a chance to be personally involved in Charity, which is what he’s said he’d like to do if he didn’t have a music career- run non profits. Nice videos of Danny and Carrie.

Many artists in all music genres give back. Social responsibility is a large part of many performers lives. No knock on Country music — but he could have done the same thing and been a rock, pop, AC or theatrical performer.

  42. Whoa. Maybe Danny really doesn’t need to be roaming around the fairgrounds after his shows, after all. Watch out on the tour bus ;)

dannygokey: South Carolina ROCKED!! After the show I ate Ice cream,Fried Oreo, Fried Snickers,Caramel Corn,Italian sausage, Pizza…& Now Im feelin sick

  43. So I just tried to sign up for this–Q102 for Adam. Who the heck is
Q102.? No success… that’s pretty typical for me! Other fans are faster. lol…. :)

  44. Many artists in all music genres give back. Social responsibility is a large part of many performers lives. No knock on Country music — but he could have done the same thing and been a rock, pop, AC or theatrical performer.

I don’t have any numbers to give (perhaps the knowledgeable country ones here can, lol), but I am a hardcore classic and alt rock fan who only started following country because of Danny and I am just really surprised at the extensive charity events and personal involvement of country artists. It just seems like there is more of a structured framework for country artists to do so.
But again, the Country fans would have to back that up (or not). And of course pop/rock do it too – Kris Allen does a lot on his own; it just seems to me like the industry itself supports it more that other genres. Could just be my impression though, being new to the genre and following Danny, who is so involved in his own foundation and other charitable causes.

  45. Add one sick Danny road manager / drummer, lol

    fadersupstudio: @dannygokey I know!!!

I am a hardcore classic and alt rock fan who only started following country because of Danny and I am just really surprised at the extensive charity events and personal involvement of country artists. It just seems like there is more of a structured framework for country artists to do so.

I hope it’s similar in all genres but I’m not sure, really. This year has seen a ton of regular fundraisers of all kinds, possibly at a higher level than normal given the local Nashville flood relief needs.

Danny seems to have connected with numerous ongoing charity-minded efforts in Nashville, between St. Jude, the T.J. Martell foundation, standing up his own SHF initiatives there like the music program and flood relief center, and more others than I can count.

And he seems to have been following the example of some country artists that he’s met, both by helping them with their own causes and modeling some of his efforts by what they’ve done before. Just to pick one, look at Darryl Worley, who Danny described as a friend in a recent interview, and who’s with his management company. Danny performed for Darryl at his annual Tennessee River Run event that helped raise money to stand up a new cancer center. And before that they did a different charity event for another medical charity.

But Danny also seems to have picked up some ideas. Darryl has participated in country music cruises, which is something Danny is doing also to raise money for SHF early in 2011.

  46. David Archuleta is coming back to Manila? I thought we were not included this time, but maybe his management changed their mind and decided to add Philippines. That’s good :) He still has a pretty good fan base here and his singles are doing well on our charts. Well if it’s true…welcome back David!

That’s a really nice interview with Lee. Now I’m even more excited to hear the rest of Live It Up :)

  47. Is it true that the staffs of Sophia’s Heart Foundation are Danny’s own relatives?

  48. My recollection of the Davids’ concert in Manila is that they sold something like 50K tickets and an additional 65K people showed up (for a total of 115K) to watch, as the promoter put up large screens at the back of and around the Mall of Asia, so lots of people were able to watch for free.

  49. I think Adam’s AI music/videos should be released commercially. Just reminiscing a bit. He’s so good. He has the most amazing energy and voice. Wow wow wow!

I will never get over him. :) He’s so amazing and ott awesome. No one is like him. He’s so unique.

P.S. I confess I’ve been listening to my Adam itunes. He just makes me so happy. :)

  50. It’s a pleasure to announce that Adam Lambert’s first single ‘Whataya Want From Me’ reached Gold status in Switzerland!
Thanks to all you guys for your support!
Adam’s taking the world by storm!

From ALF! So happy with the success he is having around the world! :)

  51. Great interview with Lee. The questions were very interesting. I’m now even more excited about the album.

Urgg! Adam. I’m not a prude but that is more personal info than I need to know. But guess it’ll sell.

  52. WOW! I read an article in the Rhode Island Monthly and am quite impressed that Siobhan Magnus has this opportunity! James Montgomery has toured with the Allman Brothers, jammed with James Cotton and B.B. King, and given a few lessons to Mick Jagger. He has appeared with George Harrison and Steven Tyler.

    So cool…

  53. It is good to hear that Paige has this opportunity for the lead role in the Broadway Hit “BEEHIVE”. Simon did say she had a great voice, so…

Of course, I wouldn’t want to miss Adam’s unique story, with or without intimate details.

  54. David Archuleta in Manila is confirmed. One of our local radio stations, Magic 89.9, tweeted about it today. No details yet though on what his itinerary is gonna be like this time around.

ETA: David is arriving on November 16 and having a show on the 17th. Still no details on the show…

  55. I think it’s one reason Danny is so happy in Country music; he has a chance to be personally involved in Charity,

He couldn’t be personally involved in charity if he wasn’t in country?

When I saw the Idols tour I was impressed with Gokey’s vocals.

  56. I think Adam’s AI music/videos should be released commercially.

They are. You can get them on Itunes plus they are included as bonus materials on some of his CDs.

  57. Can’t wait for Adam’s E!THS special – “evil infant”, haha!! (actually, I think I had three of those :)) Anyway, I love hearing Adam’s interviews because he’s always so polite and well-spoken. And it sounds like we may learn some things we haven’t heard before, wink-wink! His dad, Eber, and brother Neal are also very clever and witty, so I’m especially looking forward to what they might say.

I’m happy to hear that good things are happening for Danny. He really does have a great voice. My daughter and I met him while the group was in Dallas for the AI8 tour at the barricades before the show. He was very sweet and took alot of time to visit, take pictures with my daughter, etc.

This is a fun thread – nice to hear that so many Idols are doing well. I like the comment someone made earlier – there are many degrees of success. By being on the show, these performers are exposed to so many more opportunities and can hopefully make a living doing what they love.

  58. Is it true that the staffs of Sophia’s Heart Foundation are Danny’s own relatives?

There is a pretty tiny staff, as far as I know.

The CEO is Danny of course. VP is Ivan Santiago, his bass player and Brother in Law.
Hsing Lieu (not a relative) is head of volunteers. Steven Glynn (not a relative), currently Executive Director at Spreenkler serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Those are the only positions I know of currently. I do know quite a few volunteers.

So yes, in answer to your question there is a relative (brother in law) on his staff- he is married to the late Sophia’s sister.

You can learn more about Sophias Heart Foundation by going to http://www.sophiasheart.org

  59. There is a pretty tiny staff, as far as I know.

Yes, it was founded by Danny and his late wife’s family to honor her memory. No big surprise they are among the officers of the foundation. Just to look at two in that ACM Lifting Lives feature this month, would amaze me if Carrie isn’t an officer somehow on her foundation, and presumably Darryl Worley is an officer of the Darryl Worley foundation ;)

Danny says very clearly that he draws no salary for his work for SHF. If anything, he’s been donating quite a bit of his professional earnings as well as his time, as I understand it. I would imagine it’s similar with Ivan, that he either draws no salary or a minimal one. He’s a little more hands-on with SHF day to day than Danny has time to be, but Ivan’s main pursuits are as bass player for Danny’s touring band and his other music / production interests in Nashville.

  60. WWFM went Gold in Switzerland

Congratulations to Adam! One country at a time. :)
