Lin-Manuel Miranda to Close Out Broadway Run of ‘In the Heights’

After a Broadway run of more than two and a half years that included four Tony Awards and a Grammy, the hit musical “In the Heights” will close on Jan. 9. “It’s the right time, ” one of the producers, Kevin McCollum, said Wednesday, citing the implacable economics of Broadway. “If we ran another year, it wouldn’t make sense.”

The “American Idol” winner Jordin Sparks, who joined the cast in August, will be leaving as planned in mid-November but Lin-Manuel Miranda, who created the musical and originally starred in it, will be returning to the lead role of Usnavi for the final 19 performances. A movie version is also in the works, scheduled to begin shooting in 2011.

“I think it’s the stupidest thing he’s ever done in his life, ” he told the magazine, in an conversation to be published next week. “He’s a sacred American institution of rock ‘n’ roll, and he just threw it all out the window. Just stomped on it and set it on fire.”

“I think whoever’s advising him, ” he continued, “we should bring back the guillotine, or whatever they call that thing. And if it was himself, he needs some serious counseling. I love him to death, but I gotta speak the truth.”

“Our home still takes my breath away”

I noticed a story on the web this week marking the one-year anniversary of the Extreme Makeover build we did for the Cowan-Brown family in Bunker Hill, Indiana. Here’s what the builder, Paul Schwinghammer (what a great name for a builder!) of Hallmark Homes said: “A day hasn’t gone by that I haven’t thought of the experience of helping the family and organizing thousands of eager volunteers. It was a humbling testament to how giving Hoosiers are.”

Man, that’s always what I love to hear and I was equally stoked to read Heather Cowan’s (the mom) quote: “Our home still takes my breath away. I never would have sat down and described this as my dream home. It is much more than my dreams!” I remember this show was a great build and I really liked having singer David Cook join us on site. I dug into my iPhoto and grabbed a few pics from this episode’s special project to help celebrate this anniversary!

Foster’s song struck chord with Johns

Singer Michael Johns and producer David Foster happened to be working in Foster’s Santa Monica recording studio when Foster’s director friend, Michael French, came in to tell them he had finished his feature film on Vancouver athlete and activist Rick Hansen.

The chance encounter resulted in the acoustic version of the Foster-penned hit “Man in Motion” that appears on the movie’s soundtrack.

“It was one of those happy coincidences, ” says Johns, the Australian-born singer who started working with Foster after appearing on TV’s American Idol two years ago. “David and I were actually working on another project and the director came in.”

Foster is an executive producer of French’s movie.

But fans of the Dancing duo can rest easy, because Patridge says she will reunite with her pro partner on TV once again.

“My new show with [realty TV producer] Mark Burnett just got picked up, ” Patridge told PEOPLE backstage after her elimination. “It’s going to be on VH1 and we’re going to start filming soon. I’m sure Tony will be on that.”

  1. Wow, Jim Cantiello, that’s one of my favorite recaps ever! Great job! And thanks for promoting Kris Allen’s new single! BTW, the original “Brad” in Rocky Horror Picture Show is a relative (distant cousin) of mine … Barry Bostwick. (My grandmother’s a Bostwick.)

Kelly Clarkson, can’t wait to hear her at the Rangers World Series game this weekend! Go, Rangers! Antlers up! I’m a huge Rangers fan (live half an hour from the stadium and go to several games a year) and big fan of Kelly’s, so great combination as far as I’m concerned!

  2. Cantiello’s “Glee Cap” featuring…Kris Allen!

I guess this was the “super-secret super-amazing surprise” Jim tweeted about. IDK

  3. Was Audrina’s elimination really all that shocking? I get she was one of the better dancers but I suspected for a while she wasn’t connecting with viewers and IMO Tony never really had a dedicated fanbase.

Aww I always loved that pic of David with Ty P! I remember back when that was filmed he said really nice things about him.

  4. Way to sneak that in, MJ. I usually skim the Headlines and almost missed it. LOL

I L.O.V.E. Jim Cantiello’s video news, interviews, and recaps. I was expecting a Krim show when he said he had a super secret surpise for this week that would sneak up on us. How awesome that he got Kris in his Glee recap singing to Sue Sylvester.

I think I need to watch that again. THANK YOU, JIM and KRIS ALLEN!

  5. I’m so glad Lee is doing the Walmart soundcheck.More videos for us, and good advertising when they play it at the stores. I’ve been looking at David Cook’s soundcheck on youtube-five songs and an interview and he sounded fantastic. Kris did one last year, didn’t he? I’m just trying to figure out if Lee will just be doing “Sweet Serendipity” or if they always do more songs from the album.
R.J. Ronquillo tweeted that he is not in Lee’s band and that another R.J. is the drummer.

  6. hahahaha the glee recap is so funny! Great that Jim got Kris for that song. They’re always funny together :D

  7. Kris did one last year, didn’t he?

Kris, Adam & Allison did a joint interview but no performance. All three did AOL Music Sessions. We didn’t get Kris & Allison’s sets until like February due to some legal issue. Allison’s was posted briefly but was yanked right after it came up.

  8. Here is a link to last year’s Walmart soundcheck —

    http://soundcheck.walmart.com/american-idols

An interview with Allison, Kris and Adam together, with 3 segments….

0-1:48 – Allison music in background.

1:48 – 3:19 Kris talking about his album, LLWD in background and a bit of Kris performing LLWD.

3:19 – 5:28 Adam, a small bit of TFM — mostly they use the instrumental sections.

Then Kris has a brief statement at the end.

Sounds like Lee’s may be more like Cook’s which was a better album promotion. Without the music in the Soundcheck, really not very impactful.

  9. David’s Soundcheck performances are some of my faves of his. Like I said in the previous thread his was timed so well that it was playing in Walmart the week the album dropped. Carrie had a Soundcheck too for Play On which was fantastic.

    ITA on both.

  11. Kris, Adam & Allison did a joint interview but no performance.

Their Soundcheck situation was almost representative of what happened to their promotion– except for Adam, who had great promotion elsewhere, basically, I feel like these guys got their promotional opportunities diluted because 19 had signed all three and were so busy trying to “be fair” or capitalize on group promotion that the effect wasn’t very, well, effective. Allison probably bore the brunt of this mistake… JMO.

I think Lee will definitely benefit from having the deck “cleared” so to speak, this Fall season, as far as 19 is concerned. He’s the only 19 artist releasing this Fall, right? They can really focus on him. Crystal is releasing in December, but I’m hearing her manager is ex-19, right? I expect good, but not a lot of splashy promotion for her.

  12. Aw Ty and David Cook together. That show was so sweet -David working with the little girls sewing the pillows to raise money and working in the childrens’ hospital helping the kids make frames. I still giggle when I think of that clip of David trying to race in the painting stilts. :) I also remember him REALLY loving working on the rock wall on the front porch. :)

ooh, I’m going to need to revisit Cook’s Walmart Soundcheck. It’s been too long! I’ll check Lee’s out when it’s ready too.

  13. Archie’s Fan Edition of “The Other Side of Down” album which sells for $30.99 is sold out as of this morning.

  14. Congratulations to Ruben for still being around. It’s nice to see that, even if he is pretty much shrugged off by the Idol masses.

  15. And he really wants to capture whatever it is that Train has managed lately.

thats unfortunate because to my ears Pat sounds like he’s going to blow a vocal cord at any moment when he sings. I just do not like what they produced this time around. The upside is that it at least adds variety to the pop airwaves.

  16. ^ I’m assuming Train’s success. But the fact he mentioned Train’s vocals, yikes. I’m with you there.

  17. sr4mjc – he was definitely noting the song styles, I was just venting a little. Pat just has one of those voices that makes my eyes roll back in my head. ;) It was an interesting read. thanks.

  18. Haha the glee recap is too funny lol. Kris and Jim actually sound pretty good singing together though! Cute that Jim slid in the AWM bit. Kris + Jim = fun times!!!

  19. If it not too much off topic, would people mind talking a bit about the break-down of responsibilities for the label vs management? My understanding is that there are three players in these debut idol albums: the Sony label (RCA/Jive), 19E and, in most cases, 19M. Are both RCA/Jive and 19E responsible for making the album? Who shells the money out for promo and radio play? Who’s responsible for booking events ranging from radio interviews to events like Live at the Vineyard to late night talk shows? Does the $ that a management firm has make a difference at all, or is the quality of management simply proportional to the quality of the person representing you and whatever networking ties he/she has in the industry? Also, where does 19E role begin and end in this? I always thought it was slightly odd the idols essentially signed to two record companies. Anyway, I’d appreciate any info you guys might have!

  20. I already checked out Jonna’s IMDB page. She’s adorable. Definitely has the good-girl-next-door thing going on. I have no idea, of course, of the storyline, but she looks like a good fit based on the song itself. She said she’d be tweeting from the set. Watch her tweet followers skyrocket. LOL

  21. Hi. I’m new to this. So, this may be the incorrect place to post this. But I just received an e-mail from Jerry McKenna at WXLO 104.5 in Fitchburg MA. He stated that Jen & Steve will be interviewing Lee tomorrow a.m. Listen to interview and a major announcement. Just wanted to relay the info.

  22. This is a very layman’s answer. 19E is who all idol contestants have a contract with during the time-frame they are associated with Idol, the TV show, or Idol, the tour. The contract begins the day they audition and ends for all intents and purposes the day the tour ends. During this year long stretch they cannot sign any other recording contract without the permission of 19E. As well, most personal appearances are covered under this contract while it is in affect.

19 E then has first refusal to “sign” a continuing contract with the idol finalists who they deem worthy. RCA/Jive (Sony), through their contractual set-up with 19E, then are allowed to sign the chosen idols. In some cases other recording branches of Sony are brought into the mix…as with Carrie and I believe Fantasia (others also). These recording arms are often genre specific so a best fit was matched. By the way…the new contract between 19 E is now with Universal (I believe…please correct me).

At this point RCA/Jive are now responsible for the “recorded music” that is published for the Idol. This includes promoting the album or single through print, audio or visual media such as TV shows, on-line listening centers (AOL, etc.) They are the ones who line up the song-writers, producers, recording studios, session musicians. They promote the songs to radio, set up promo tours like Adam’s initial overseas jaunt and they book jingle balls or radio festivals. They also work with the Artist on videos that are specific to a recorded song.

The other factor in the mix is management, which for some idols becomes 19M. Many idols sign with other management. Management is the arm of the business that promotes the Artist and not a recording. They are the ones who book personal appearances, tours, commercials, personal interviews (not related to the direct promo of a recording), magazine articles, private one-off gigs, charity appearances, product endorsement. They are often referred to as Agents.

  23. My understanding is that there are three players in these debut idol albums: the Sony label (RCA/Jive), 19E and, in most cases, 19M.

Things can be murky between all the parties involved in releasing an album, but here are a few things that I think are generally true:

    – 19E is the television arm of 19. They co-produce AI with Freemantle and would have little involvement with the album release (but with luck, they’ll have an Idol on the show and may use a few of their songs for montages (and won’t put a plant in front of their face in the audition room))

    – 19M is the management arm of 19. Not all Idols sign with 19. A manager’s job is to manage the career of the artist. They will likely give them some advice about direction and such. They are responsible for setting up appearances on television and print interviews. They are also repsonsible for touring. They help the artist negotiate contracts with the label (and tour promoters). They take a slice of everything the artist earns.

    – 19R is the recording arm of 19. They are the label that Idols are officially signed to and they license the recordings to labels under the Sony umbrella (usually. There are a few Idols that have been signed and distributed by 19R with no Sony involvement). From all indication, 19R appears to do nothing but collect money from profits.

    – Sony labels such as Jive, Arista, RCA, RCA Nashville, J, etc: These labels give the artist an advance which is used record the album (and live on until the royalty cheques start pouring in after the advance and all recoupable expenses are paid back). The label is heavily involved in finding songs to record, selecting which tracks appear on the album, has approval over producers and selects singles. The label is responsible for pushing those singles to radio, setting up radio promo gigs (Jingle Balls, Charity concerts, Meet&Greets, Interviews, etc). They will pay the salary of the band for these events (and television shows) and may provide tour support. They will pay the upfront cost for the videos. Many of this money will be recoupable from the artist should they make any money (and even if you payback all your recoupable expenses, they will still keep some of your royalties in case your next album flops).

  24. Tess, only the top 24 (36 for season 8) sign a contract with 19E. Over the past two years the initial contract has ended before the end of the tour.

This is were you post that sort of information :)

  26. From all indication, 19R appears to do nothing but collect money from profits.

I’ve always felt this way about 19R, but in their defense, aren’t David Hodges, Claude Kelly, adn Lindy Robbins under retainer with them? I think I remember reading last year that they have some type of contract with 19R, that’s not necessarily a good thing, but it’s better than not having a relationship with any songwriters.

  27. I looked up Jonna Walsh to see who she is. She’s naturally beautiful! She looks like the girl next door! Can’t wait for Lee’s video!

  28. See, now that’s why I love this site…I never knew Walmart Soundcheck even existed! Glad to see things are rocking along for Lee in the way of promotion for the single and album release.

MJ, thanks for the video of David Osmond. I’m very happy to see he is doing well at this time. It’s nice to see he is lending his voice to the MS Movement.

Most of the promotion effort for the release comes from Sony Music Entertainment, in Lees case RCA-Jive Record Group, and they have a number of other releases this Fall. But I think Lee will be fine when it comes to resources.

Biggest hurdle for Lee may be that he does not appear to have a large fanbase ready to buy his music — and all of the past winners had this when their music was on pre-sale and the first single was released.

I would expect Crystal’s manager, Gina Orr, to do something with real impact for Crystal. She was a VP PR with 19 Entertainment for about a year — handled the Jive Artists for them. Prior to that, she was with Jive for several years in PR/Promotion, was Britney Spears PR person, and is very well connected and very well respected in the business. I don’t think flashy PR is right for Crystal but I expect Gina to come up with some meaningful opportunities for Crystal.

  30. Most of the promotion effort for the release comes from Sony Music Entertainment

This is where the radio promo comes from, but 19M will be in charge of promoting Lee. It’s their job to get him on talk shows, and as many public appearances as they can.

  31. Ooh Jonna is adorable!

19/AI seemed to like Lee during AI so I hope that bodes well for him.

  32. Most of the promotion effort for the release comes from Sony Music Entertainment, in Lees case RCA

19M is the management arm of 19. Not all Idols sign with 19. A manager’s job is to manage the career of the artist. They will likely give them some advice about direction and such. They are responsible for setting up appear

If 19M is responsible for the bulk of the TV and print promotion, then that’s going to be the bulk of the promotion effort for his drop, particularly for the first week, JMO. RCA will do the radio push, yes, I know, but I was talking about Lee benefiting from 19M being able to focus on him on the 19M stuff.

  33. He stated that Jen & Steve will be interviewing Lee tomorrow a.m. Listen to interview and a major announcement.

ohh dear, what could a ‘major announcement’ be?

Jonna is super cute, I just hope she’s not taller than him. She looks like she might be.

Biggest hurdle for Lee may be that he does not appear to have a large fanbase ready to buy his music

I think it’s bigger than people expect, but you’re right, it’s not as big as former Idols. I think the biggest issue was many people didn’t really know he had a song out. I think alot of people are willing to buy his stuff, but they aren’t the “hardcore fans” who knew when the single would be released the second the announcement was made. I guess what I’m trying to say is, I think he might have alot of casual fans that are willing to check into him moreso than ‘hardcores’. But those people have to be alerted to his music, and there hasn’t been a ton of promo yet. I’m hoping once all that stars, and it looks like it’s starting now, that he’ll have similar numbers.

  34. ohh dear, what could a ‘major announcement’ be?

WXLO Jingle Ball. Kris Allen played it last year. It was a really nice concert. If it’s at Mechanics Hall again this year, it’ll be really sweet.

  35. Got an email reply back from CMN. I had inquired last week if David was going to perform for their event and if they could confirm it. This is the reply I got today: “Hi Jen,
Unfortunately David will not be performing at our event. He will be in Asia on tour. Thanks, Kelli”

This was in the comments on FansofDavid blog. If true, sounds like they cancelled the charity gig so David A. could be in Asia. I have lots of thoughts about this and what’s (not) going on with David’s career in the U.S. right now. Sadz. Hopefully he can pick up some cash from the Asia thing and happy for them since there’s apparently lots of love for him there.

  36. This is where the radio promo comes from, but 19M will be in charge of promoting Lee. It’s their job to get him on talk shows, and as many public appearances as they can.

Sure 19M has to do some things — in November they will book him on a few TV shows and set up some showcase appearances. 19M’s real intense work for the winners are usually the month after the win, the Idol Tour, and then the post-release tour.

RCA handles a lot more than the radio promo — most of the online promo and all the online album promo, retail promo, distribution and placement, etc. This is the most intensive work that is done right now. All of this is hugely people intensive. It is not as glamorous as a guest appearance on Leno but can make a bigger difference.

For example, RCA set up alternate distribution of FYE last year — it was in Hot Topic stores, on MAC Counters, in Walgreens and CVS’s across the country, and so on. This effort added over 20,000 extra retail outlets for the CD — and that incremental distribution resulted in more sales.

And even some of the initial appearances are actually set-up by Sony — and not 19M. Lee will do an I Heart Radio showcase– IHR is owned by Clear Channel. Lee is featured on many Clear Channel radio station websites and on IHR. It seems likely that RCA is involved with this deal — since it is Clear Channel.

  37. Do we consider the November 11 private iheartradio show Lee’s official live debut of his album? Last year Kris did it at the Miami Tailgate party before his album dropped and had the GMA performance the day of his album release.

  38. WXLO Jingle Ball. Kris Allen played it last year. It was a really nice concert. If it’s at Mechanics Hall again this year, it’ll be really sweet.

It is, I looked it up. It’s on December 5th at Mechanics Hall. So far the list of performers are Train, Guster, Five for Fighting, and Steven Page from Bare Naked Ladies.

Well I expected Lee to sell about 40K units of his debut single in week one. But since there is almost no promo for it and it is sitting at #51 on iTunes — guess it will be around 20K. A bit lower that Kris’ opening with LLWD. LLWD eventually got huge support on radio and sold over 1.5 million, so SS could do the same.

My only point is that it is a lot easier to have a start like Cook had with a really large fanbase ready and waiting to buy singles and your album immediately.

ETA: Lee’s IHR showcase is brilliant — it would be HQ video online on IHR, on a lot of Clear Channel websites and on VEVO/YT. I can’t imagine anything better than this for an album preview + radio promo.

  40. Hello. Don’t know where to put this, I wish MJ could highlight it a little bit so Didi Benami fans coming to this site will see it…

It was Didi’s birthday on October 25 and I missed it!! Her fansite created a lovely, touching video for Didi with some really ‘big’ American Idol 9 stars in it!! Amazing how they did it and able to contact everyone including Jason Reeves, Lacey Brown, Brendan James, Didi’s family and friends. Here’s the video link. I wish I knew and contributed something. I am a Didi fan!! Thank you.

  41. Wasn’t LLWD getting a lot more spins when it went on sale than SS is currently getting? If it sells anywhere close to it I chalk that up entirely to Lee’s fanbase (which I agree isn’t huge but still). I stopped comparing to anything David did with initial singles, albums, etc because while yes he obviously had a bigger fanbase, he came off the show with a much stronger overall image than Lee (Oprah, Olympics pimpin’, Skechers endorsement). What will be important with Lee is how he’ll sell in the longrun especially his album.

  42. LOVE, love, love the Blackbird Academy promotional video with Kris.

From the artists talking about how important supporting musical education, the background music of Red Guitar which is my favorite, to Kris little interview saying at the end that you don’t have to make millions to be considered a success. Everything in that video is a win, and of course Kris looks soooo good.

  43. My only point is that it is a lot easier to have a start like Cook had with a really large fanbase ready and waiting to buy singles and your album immediately.

I don’t think that matters. Radio PDs are only going to take Lee seriously if they see that his sales are due to people liking the song, and not just buying it because Lee was on AI. It’s fairly simple to compare the milestones of LLWD and David Cook’s debut song. Despite having big debut numbers, LLWD outperformed Light On on both Top 40 and HAC, and sold more copies, so how did the big debut make things easier? I’m not saying that to put LO or Cook down, just to show that PDs are looking at a lot more than what a song does when it’s not even getting a lot of airplay.

Maybe, this is part of the problem that David Archuleta faced two years ago, and that’s continuing now. PDs really didn’t pay his second song any attention, even though he had such as huge hit with Crush, and even though his album sold over 700K. Nobody cares what SS does in the first week, except those who want to make comparisons (BTW, why are we comparing what LLWD did in 3 days to what SS will do in 7?), the real test of the song is does it have legs, and will it find an audience.

  44. Jonna Walsh is 5’7″. Lee is about 5’9″ so the height should be okay.

  45. Anyone interested in playing name that silouette again? LOL

    http://www.q102.com/pages/jingle-ball-2010/

The front male looks like the Adam cut-out that the Australian interviewer was dragging around town. And there’s a dude with a guitar in this one. Any guesses? This one is harder than Z’s pictures.

  46. Q3—I remember seeing KATA in Walgreen’s along with FYE last year, so did JIVE and RCA work together on that (or was it all SONY?)? They were both on a small box display right at the checkout counter. Can’t vouch for KATA at the other stores, though.

  47. Seems pretty clear that front guy is Adam in the Q102 picture—looks just like that cut-out that is travelling around Australia. Not so sure about the others.

  48. If it sells anywhere close to it I chalk that up entirely to Lee’s fanbase (which I agree isn’t huge but still).

This is what gives me some hope that he can (and I will operate under the assumption that he will because I’m trying to stay 100% positive :)) open fairly strong once the album is released, with all things consired with the current situation of no promo (yet– we’re starting to hear of all the things on the slate in the weeks leading up to the album) and the general lack of buzz of Season 9 as a whole. I just get the sense that RCA is gearing more towards album promo than single promo, as much of the things he’s been slated to do will most likely involve several songs and not just SS. Why I don’t know, someone else can help me with that.

  49. Didn’t LLWD went on sale on the Friday of the week in which it premiered?
The first week is usually due to fanabase.

  50. Yeah-that’s Adam for sure.

Chris Wrate, guitar player for Lee, just tweeted that Lee’s bass player is Jon Draper, and the band will definately appear in the music video. I like this guy-he tweets lots of info. Only band question left is the identity of the drummer-the mysterious RJ.

Looks like Train in the back. Pat with the microphone and the other two members lurking behind him.

  52. What I find interesting/awesome is that Adam’s is the biggest picture..hope this means he is headlining or co-headlining

Could be headlining, he is co-headlining with Katy Perry for the Miami gig. But I really think with Beiber there (if that is indeed beiber in the middler) that Beiber will probably be headlining instead or with Adam.

Way to sneak that in, MJ. I usually skim the Headlines and almost missed it. LOL

I was the same Twig- so I hope others didn’t miss this Krim video. I just love Jim & the way he includes Kris here with a great cameo doing a duet with Jim is priceless!! They do sound really good together. Thanks Jim for the AWM plug as well!!

Also love the Bluebird video with Kris promoting music education. Hope the concert goes well !!

  55. That is a really nice and informative promo video for The Blackbird Academy as well as for Kris and his involvement with Music Empowers. I had wondered how that hook-up came about. It’s very cool that the founder of ME just got a positive vibe from him and approached him for this. It’s a perfect match of passion and talent.

It’s also wonderful that Kris could steer them to The Blackbird Academy.

  56. Q102 Jingle Ball: I am sure Selena Gomez is the other female. I have seen the Train photo on another Jingle Ball website. I am guessing BoB and Michael Buble. On a side note, I am surprised how male dominated these Jingle Balls are this year. The Tampa lineup is all male and most of the others just have a few females in the announced lineups.

  57. The GLEE recap was too funny.
Love Kris little hip wiggle thing at the beginning, and thanks Jim for the AWM plug.

Thanks MJ for mentioning that Kris was in it, if not I wouldn’t even look.

  58. Sorry this is so late in the day, but thank you Q3, Kirsten and Tess for the info. It cleared things up for me. :)
