James Durbin Overcame His ‘Weirdo’ Childhood Through Heavy Metal

“I just remember being a kid, driving around with my mom, and then Dio’s ‘Holy Diver’ came on the radio and it changed everything, ” Durbin tells Noisecreep. “It was the first time I had ever heard a metal song. I loved it right away. From there I just wanted to learn as much about music as I could. Eventually I found the artists that I liked more and stuck with those. I’m talking about Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio, Mötley Crüe– you know, the classics, ” says the singer.

Brad Says Carrie Brings Funniest Stuff to CMA Awards

“Brad is quick-witted, ” Carrie tells CountryWeekly.com. “He’s good on his feet and he contributes a lot in the planning stages, a lot of ideas and stuff for gags and things like that.”

But Brad—quickly—interjects.

“She does, too. Some of the greatest things we’ve ever had. Like last year she said, ‘What if you sang Lady Gaga?’” Brad said.

‘The X Factor’: Simon Cowell on ‘my big mouth, ‘ and all four judges on their on-screen bickering

After last night’s colossal two-and-a-half-hour live episode of The X Factor, judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, Nicole Scherzinger, and L.A. Reid took time out to speak with press on the X Factor stage. (Thankfully, there were no backup dancers.) EW also took time to talk with Simon about how he feels the show is doing so far this season, and what it’s like to be both a judge and the Man In Charge. On the second page, all four judges weigh in on their tough eliminations, their biggest competition, and what their take is on all the “squabbling” happening between them on air. (Paula spoke with EW at the end of the night, and so our interview was cut a bit short.)

Simon Cowell’s Twitter revolution

Ugh. If Simon Cowell, the oligarch of cheap theatrics, the evil prince of middlebrow, the V-necked grifter who conned mass audiences into imagining themselves imbued with rarified tastes … if he has embraced Twitter, doesn’t that mean, ipso facto, that Twitter has been defiled? Twitter, the engine of the Arab Spring! Twitter, the life-and-death news source out of Haiti. Twitter, undoer of pervy congressmen and crappy airlines. Twitter, barometer of the Zeitgeist. Does its expropriation for something so trivial and bombastic as “The X Factor” not trivialise it, and us, along the way?
